2321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new name for mining on: March 08, 2013, 11:31:35 AM
some have been proposing "auditing".

it seems to me that the term "mining" indeed has always been kind of unfortunate. It makes people suspicious ("what ?!? Huh free money with the graphics card ?!?? Huh"), especially gold bugs ("that crap is not _real_ money !!!1!! and they say _mine_ it !!! like gold !!!1! ridiculous !!!1!").

something like "auditing" is much more neutral, and it's more intuitive to understand that users get rewarded for running hardware and software that is auditing transactions.

2323  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the price stagnate or drop because of this issue? on: March 07, 2013, 05:58:23 PM
I think you mean growth of 10 times the current "transaction rate".

...which is a good economic indicator of Bitcoin adoption and use...

we've grown from 5 to 50 while the volume only grown 3x (and then, mostly due to SatoshiDice).

...normalized without the speculative bubbles and panics of course.  Smiley
2324  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the price stagnate or drop because of this issue? on: March 07, 2013, 05:44:39 PM
I mean we only have the potential for growth of 10 times the current price then.

2326  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I hate socialism but..... shouldn't a nations resources be nationalized? on: March 07, 2013, 05:18:12 PM
all this discussion of markets vs socialism is often based on false dichotomies.

A nation is an economic player just like any other. They have to household with their resources, and in this day and age, they also have to compete and be "profitable". Sure, they have special privileges due to historical reasons, but nevertheless, countries like Venezuela are less powerful than most international cartels.

Still they own their territory after all, and can decide what to do with it. They can decide whether to sell resources out to these international cartels, or whether to administer them themselves. Just like a business that has to choose where to expand its domain and where to withdraw.

Currently we can handle 10 times more transactions before the 1MB limit is a real problem.

Then we only have room for max 10 times the current price, right?  Huh
2328  Economy / Speculation / Will the price stagnate or drop because of this issue? on: March 07, 2013, 04:50:05 PM
Will the price stagnate or drop once a critical mass of (new) investors understands the current problems about blocksize limit and scalability?

Satoshidice transactions won't even make a drop in the ocean if this thing gets adopted by the world.

True words! And we already got problems.
2329  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I mine with free electricity! Give me your hardware! on: March 07, 2013, 10:16:45 AM
i know someone who has an office in a nightclub/disco areal where energy costs are charged in total because there is just one meter reader for the whole areal. Depends on the rent deal of course in how far energy is priced in for this office, but if he was clever it shouldn't be much, however it's hard to judge because this facility is hard to compare with other places.
2330  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: We created a new Ripple Currency: The Favor (FAV) on: March 07, 2013, 10:10:09 AM
The fact is, commerce is not the only kind of transaction that happens between human beings.  Just because you engage in non-commerce transactions doesn't mean you are a Marxist.

yup, you just mow the lawn for granny for free, without any recorded FAVs, besides your day job.
2331  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: We created a new Ripple Currency: The Favor (FAV) on: March 07, 2013, 08:42:34 AM
'From each according to his ability, to each according to his need' works with the FAV but not with the HRS.

I'm just not sure if a Ripple-like system is best suited for this.

exactly, you don't need Ripple for Marxism. Either you don't need anything, no currency, no Ripple, if people share everything voluntarily, or, if less voluntary, you need a strong central planning software.  Smiley

Hello! Was recently re-introduced to bitcoin as a useful tool for an artist ecovillage i'm creating - Torus Artist Ecovillage - and i'm pleasantly surprised with its progress.  Cheesy

nice... I've also long thought that largely self-sustaining eco villages + bitcoins for long distance transactions would be a great combination for a more independent life.

don't be shy to introduce your project in a new dedicated thread.
2335  Local / Treffen / Re: [BitcoinMUC] Münchner Bitcoin Nutzer Treffen on: March 06, 2013, 11:32:07 AM

See you,
Martin

immer löblich, neue Treffen zu organisieren!

Unter der Woche natürlich ungünstig für arbeitende (noch... HARR!) Auswärtige.

Was überregionales an einem Wochenende wär vielleicht aber auch mal keine schlechte Idee.
2336  Local / Treffen / Re: [BitcoinMUC] Münchner Bitcoin Nutzer Treffen on: March 06, 2013, 10:51:22 AM

2338  Economy / Securities / Re: S.DICE - SatoshiDICE 100% Dividend-Paying Asset on MPEx on: March 05, 2013, 07:40:05 PM
also questionable if S.DICE will grow as fast as Bitcoin  Huh

Shares value might drop well under IPO value soon (but still outperform 99% of all fiat-denominated assets out there).
2339  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Upgrade bitcoin.org on: March 05, 2013, 07:36:19 PM
I think there need to be some grammar fixes:

* Bitcoin has its own unit
* it is valued independently on the merits of its usefulness and scarcity.

http://garyes.stormloader.com/its.html

Possessive = no apostrophe.

it's =  only used as a contraction of "it is".

I know, that's why I posted the corrected version already.  Kiss
