The point is, comparing things/events from the past to one of current time (and the future), which are not even very similar, is just wrong in most cases.
I mean: Tulips? REALLY?!

EDIT: Bitcoin is the first real counterweight for fiat money. How can somebody, even a so called "expert" even compare this to the irregularly crazy tulip mania?

Stupid questions: I've always wondered... How did the owners keep their tulips in good condition? Weren't they worried that they may dry out and die? How long can a tulip even last?

I would be very worried if I had to take care of my Bitcoins like plants. You know, water them, get them out in the sun, protect them from pests, feed them with nutrients... Hard work! Fortunately, my Trezor and/or paper seed backups don't need anything to survive, not even power. Maintenance-free forever!

Tulips are just like fiat or Ethereum. Before you run out of them, you just grow some new ones.

it's hilarious to still see bitcoin being compared to the tulip bubble

fairly easy to spot the difference

Well, i was thinking about that too, but the neighbors would likely kill me for having this thing running for days (they use firewood) and i just can't sleep in noisy environments. It's a nightmare on intercontinental flights. As soon as i recognize the noise cancellation of the ears at the moment i'm falling asleep, i wake up because the absence of turbine noise is raising some kind of alert. Maybe i shouldn't have tried to forcefully stay awake for quite some time, in an episode of my past life. IDK  Huh

They have some very quiet gas generators. PV is possibly a good idea too though.

The thing about a generator is that you don't need to run it 24/7. When out power was out, we were running a couple of times a day just to keep the freezer cold. The last few days have been overcast so PV would probably have been less then optimal. The passive nature of PV and not requiring fuel is definitely a bonus. I would suggest that it's worth having both and using each to its strengths.

Having thought this further, i may buy a 10-12kW mobile generator (fuel) and build a tiny, wooden shed for protection and fuel storage.
Just in case. $5-6k for something that shouldn't let me down if i power it up occasionally. I would just have to use up the fuel once a year or every other, depending on how long the fuel has good quality (relying on additives, i guess).

As a Bitcoin hodler, it's very bullish but I'm not much looking forward to trying to find a Bitcoin ATM in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

And once you found one, it will take some time to get the tens of thousands of dollar bills into your armored lambo, one handed, because of the gun you're holding...  Shocked

That's why my plans after taking profit near the peak of this cycle includes an autonomous photovoltaic power supply for the house., maybe coupled with wind energy.

What about a propane or diesel home generator? Wouldn't that be an easier/cheaper solution?

Sorry, drifting off topic a little...
The big plus of the PV cells is that you feed the unused power into the supply network, which saves and sometimes even generates some good amount of money.
It just has to be big enough to run the house on a semi-clouded day. A dry, floating room (room in a room), dug into the ground for a tank and generator that could run for days would cost much more, but this would be the minimum.

Stay warm and safe, friends.
Is this really you, Bob?  Grin

Faced with the prospect of freezing to death, you become pretty fucking cheery when the heat comes back on.

Long version:
(feel free to skip to the end)

We got power outages after heavy snowfall and/or storms (or much snow followed by rain) over here, about two times per winter. Normally they last 6-10 hours, because we're in an area where quite many households per square mile are supplied, at least for countryside measures, so these come first when the powerlines are repaired.
This winter we had a power outage lasting for two and a half day (!), because one of the two largest 380 Kilovolt lines ripped apart, which sends a shockwave between the neighboring poles to the left and right. They had to cut away and rebuild almost three quarter miles of power lines. Luckily, we live across the main street, which is the border of the two power supply zones. It were a good 10 hours without power, no hassle. We all got energy efficient houses, they keep the warmth inside a little longer, as long as you keep the doors and windows closed.

Now, three years ago, we had power outage number two (of the winter). No more than six hours BUT when the energy supply company switched the line on and off repeatedly, our heating system died (geothermal heat pump) and the support guy needed two days to get to us. A brilliant guy, he already pre-ordered the needed parts, or else we eould have to wait another 2 weekdays for the repair. Temperatures were just around freezing. Temperature went down a good 9 degrees inside, so we slept in sleeping bags with our clothes on.

So far so good, last summer the heating fucked off because a lightning hit near our house and killed the electronics through the outside temperature sensor. SARS-CoV-2 made the service companies half as quick and the brilliant guy already left for a better job. Now it took seven days (over the weekend) for the tech to show up, with nothing but his toolbox  Roll Eyes He needed almost two hours to know what to do and which parts to order. A VERY talkative dude, with little skill. He knew a shitload about cars, as i was forced to find out. It was friday again, so he showed up four days later with the parts and repaired the system SLOW AF.
I never seen a tech working this slow before. I swear you could watch him thinking!
If we suffer a defect in winter, we're fucked. We would have to move out for a while or freeze to death.

That's why my plans after taking profit near the peak of this cycle includes an autonomous photovoltaic power supply for the house., maybe coupled with wind energy.

$50,800. Cool

If anything I'm the screw up in the family so wouldn't be worried about getting fiat back. My sister makes more money than me, however she works in Paris and wants a flat not too far, so that's around 10000€ for 1 square meter of living space...

My parents were both public servants so yeah, pretty socialists !

I wouldn't give a single sat to anyone who doesn't deserve it, especially family members. I'd say "get on your bike and work for it."

No free lunch for anyone.

Well, i would. Not because they want, but only if i wanted.
That's why i have an even share of my hodlstack for everyone in my family. The part that my wife owns she paid for herself.

Better get those vampires off you neck, brothers!

Omit the 0, sum up the other digits, bring em back together and it equals 50.

EDIT: Got some stuff to do, wifey's at work. Proud to have shared this $50k moment with some of you  Cool

...breaking $51k as i go.

I'm not really sure if "taking profits" in fiat can really be considered correct phraseology any longer.
I don't think you guys are getting just how far gone the current fiat banking systems are. It's like saying taking profits in Zimbabwe dollars, or taking profits in Venezuelan bolivars, argentine pesos ... at some point it's nonsensical to talk about taking profits if you're buying a higher risk devaluing asset

It depends what you're buying. fiat or an investment (which your home is not) then probably not but if you're materially improving your life (even in trivial or ephemeral ways) then I think it's fair.

How is a home not an investment?

Is rent free where you are?

Your home is only an investment if you plan to one day sell it (for more than you bought it); if you don't ever plan to leave, then it's not really an investment.

Depends on how you look at it.
It's an investment that "returns" a major part of your everyday life, in terms of recreation, privacy and space to express yourself (and moar).

next move up is setting up to be quite explosive again.

the bull flag upward pennant beneath 50k looks strong and if it's right about the exchanges getting cleaned out of corn .... well the only resolution to lack of corn is higher prices

Some interpret this as rising wedge (bearish).
I don't agree, however. It also doesn't fit the sentiment at all.

Those who try to scare us with going to 0 talk either don't understand how exchanges work, or are hoping to make others sell, so they buy cheaper. I am not scared of any low price and that I will be at a loss temporarily (happened many times already). On the contrary, I am happy with the fact that I can buy more Bitcoins with my monthly income. The question is not how low we may go, but how high we will go! For the ignorants just two numbers - 200 price at the end of 2014 (does it matter now?!?) and stable 6K at the end of 2017 (excluding the peak 10-20K). So we are on this schedule: 4k at the end of 2018 and stable 30-40K  at the end of 2021 (with possible peak above 100K). But let's say we have more crooks like Wu, Ver and Wright to hammer the price, and SEC is still refusing to allow ETF. Then what about in 7-8 years. With almost all 21mil Bitcoins mined, and several millions lost each year, and millions of new buyers... The explosion can't be delayed much longer for sure. So, no need of FUD or nervous trading, just hodl and you won't be dissapointed by the result!

While reading, i recognized

In reality, last BTC mined should be around 2140 by current prognosis, so 7-8 years won't work.
Difficulty problems?  Cheesy

Also, several millions of bitcoin lost each year...
How?  Roll Eyes

We'll be "almost" way before 2140. Someone even predicted before 2078 due to constantly being faster than 10 minutes mined per block (halvings are about 3 years 10 months instead of a full 4 years).

However, even assuming 10 minute blocks, we'd have "almost" all bitcoins mined by about 2040, with 20.95m BTC or more than 99% already.

Thanks for the info. My sources may be a bit outdated, it seems...  Roll Eyes

EDIT:

As for the poll, i "already have taken profits". Yesterday, to be precise. Just a little, for funding the extension of my house. There will be subsequent takings in the near future, and as it seems about half of what i bought before winter will remain in the hodlstack.

Yeah... I know after 12h it's easy to say, there was nothing... After rebounce and the info that there was a long squeeze it's easy to rant and insult like a 10 year aggro kid. Clap clap clap... How awesome. Maybe he can also tell me the lottery numbers from last week.

I think you are making a mistake, i used to make this one in the past, too.
In 2017, daily price rises in the range of $1-$2k marked the approaching top, $1k-$2k daily falls marked the beginning of the bear cylcle.
These are absolute numbers. Pumps/dumps of the same relative orders should be more than twice as big than what we were experiencing the last few days/weeks.
High volatility means bigger jumps at higher prices.
You should watch daily candles to distance your lil selfie (c) from bad emotions and cool down a little.

This is not full throttle mode, yet.

...but isn't that what our buddy mindrust did?  He also said it was for peace of mind.

Why does he sold all his coins at the bottom? I can't get it even now. If you have a work and hobby, you can just "forget" about your coins. If it fail, in factnothing will change for you. Yeah, you will regret this all your life "Oh, i could sold it and bought new Cadillac for myself!". But what will be (in fact what already happened in mindrust case) if this will success? If you've sold at the bottom, you will regret your actions much stronger than in if it would fail.

No.  The covid bottom scared the shit out of him.  He waited until he could cash out with his initial investment and then bailed.  I think it was around 10k when he pulled out.

AFAIR he bought at around $1.000 and kicked it at $4.000 and he was proud to "win" 30.000 with his 10 BTC.
So, let me calculate... His "win" turns to a loss of $445.000, as of today. Absolute Legend (but not in a positive way).

I'd really like to see $48k behind us.

What have you got against 48k? Feels like we just got here.

I kind of like 48k, it beats the shit out 3.3k or 1k.

Well, i actually welcome $48k.

I’m kinda surprised we are still holding this top..
I think it hasn’t peaked yet at 49 or we’d be pulling back by now..
Think this peak might have a nice break above 50 in it before a nice calming pullback to the low/mid 40s..

Over and over and over..
y’all gotta be used to this by now..

The Bitcoin vs. environment trope is total bullshit.

A widely adopted, deflationary store of value is the only thing with the potential to overcome humanities tendency to instant gratification and rein in the senseless overcomsumption we see today.

If your money is going to be worth more tomorrow than it is today are you going to blow it on some worthless crap at WalMart or IKEA?  No.  You are only going to spend it on things with actual value.

Bitcoin incentivizes the deferral of consumption and planning on longer time frames, as such it is the best thing to happen for the ecology in all of human history.

Look who's speaking up  Grin
And you pretty nailed it, again.

I was on the verge to post that the current fiat ecosystem (wtf?!) is causing multitudes of energy usage and heat/co2 production when compared to bitcoin.
Putting up a stupid thesis and write it up on the esoweb is also not a study, actually.

OK. So. I lied about not taking profit at $50k.

Feeling greedy. Starting to move some coin today in preparation for $50k. That should give us enough liquidity buffer to buy the third and final parcel of land, and start putting up a basic steel/concrete garage on the lot ASAP, as well as covering costs for grading/paving the driveway, and bridge construction.

Was looking over my accounts last night, about which account to draw down on, and decided "Fuck it. I like that money where it is, doing what it's doing. Might as well sell a little bit of corn at these prices."

Sue me.
