I would imagine it will be difficult to prosecute as BTC is a virtual item, which is not recognised as currency in most juristictions.

Couple that with the fact the fact that Pirate is probably not his real name etc etc and proving that he is the one who people sent all their coins to will be difficult.  Added to which, most of the investment was done via pass throughts or secondary agents etc.

You can see that it is not simple to investigate or prove and thats if any law enforcement is actually interested.

Oh, so theft is only theft if it's a currency? That's good to know, can I have your address real quick? I'm sure you have lots of non currency items in your house.
2422  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Closed on: September 08, 2012, 11:48:35 AM
So, really... Did pirate just run away and disappear? Is that really what happened?

People are realising the joys of irreversible transactions!

I am most certainly a noob who just invested all my money in pirate. Thank you for pointing out how new I am and how I just now realized what a pickle this fiasco could be!

That aside, I'm asking, someone steals 500k BTC, and no one is doing anything about it, yet.
Is anyone actually able to do anything here? Like, really able? Can one sue? Can anyone take legal action?

What part am I missing that is putting all the major players in this game off from doing anything against pirate?

They most certainly wont be posting about it publicly on a forum pirate is most likely reading.

Agreed, I said that before as well in another thread.

Im also surprised how this shit storm seems to be calming down. From what Ive read this is something that happens regularly on these forums, its almost as if scamming the BTC community is something normal here

It's been almost three weeks, what do you expect? Besides, the people who are actually doing something about it probably aren't going to post on a forum about it, especially since he (pirate) reads it.

You guys even got satisfied when he moved 10k or 20k BTC from one address to other

I removed it cause I don't remember seeing that at all, and if I didn't see it it's likely a lot of people on the forum didn't see it so it doesn't factor in, cause I read almost all the drama threads when I'm bored on my phone. Almost as good as tv.
2425  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Who BTCGUY ? scammer on: September 07, 2012, 05:36:17 PM
Hello

Never been on this site before, but just had three people showup to my door that claim that they were from this site and claim he took him for 4k for a fail transaction, that came from MD, wonderiing if I was BTCGUY and this pr#ck is using my name and address on this forum I need any info from anyone, that had a transaction with this guy, to track him down. Looking for someone that had a successful transaction with this guy as with a tracking number so I can see what postoffice the package actually came from, or city, as he using my address in his profile, but is not where it was shipped from as I am the real Maurice Rivera and have no knowledge about this site except for what the member that showup to my door explained.

I repeat I am not BTCGUY, or any other alias he may have when under. But am the real Maurice Rivera and this a##hoe using my name and address, I reporting this guy to the police, but they need more info, So anyone with tracking info if you ever receive a package from him would be a good start, or any email address or phone number he may have used, or other name he may have when under.

My email address is retropcdos@gmail.com PM me and I give you phone # if you PM me

I am in no way connected to this guy and is now consider identify fraud as I am filing a report.

The guy in this thread had something shipped to him from btcguy.

2426  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 07, 2012, 05:27:52 PM
What I'm saying is, I lose zero credibility if Pirate doesn't pay out, whether Matthew pays his bet or not.

That doesn't make you less gullible or greedy...

You can say what you want about greed; sure I'd like to be a bazillionsaire, what else is new?

I really don't see where gullibility enters the equation. I'd have bet with anybody on this forum, how does that make me gullible?

The gullibility enters the equation because you didn't escrow the bet. And let me tell you, Matt is as gullible as the next guy, because he did just the same thing, trust any of us to pay up if we lose. Except he knows he will not win, so, people who bet him won't need to have the money to pay him. But you and almost everybody believes he will pay. You guys even got satisfied when he moved 10k or 20k BTC from one address to other, despite that being no guarantee of payment.
Most of Matt's detractors just kept their mouth shut about his inability to pay after that stunt.

Repeat with me: GULLIBLE.

I don't really get your argument, or how it makes anyone gullible since they aren't losing anything. I already considered the "teaching a lesson about not trusting people, including matthew", but it doesn't make any sense because the people who took the bet have nothing at stake here, besides their rep on a forum which (for a lot) is probably not worth as much as the bitcoins are. Matthew has a lot more to lose than everyone else does.

Also,

2427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Romney and bitcoins on: September 07, 2012, 12:01:29 PM
I find the whole thing craptastic.

It's not that someone is finally forcing Romney to release his tax returns (it's something he should have done a year ago) ... but demanding payment in bitcoins makes everyone look like a bunch of shady shisters....     look it's how you guys look at it...

What about all the blackmail/ransom demands in cash? Make people who use cash look like shysters?
2428  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Putting your money where Pirate's mouth is. on: September 07, 2012, 09:02:44 AM
How did imsaguy get his VIP badge? I guess we will never get any admission of who paid for it. Who are the people who attained VIP status around the same time? Could it be that they are pirate-preachers?

And this again brings up the inconvenient matter of some operators of this forum profiting personally from this ponzi scheme, effectively aiding and abetting its proliferation by granting for an extended period of time (while invested themselves) most of the ponzi feeder fund threads a sticky status and then saying something like "I thought it is a ponzi but I risked my money and profited from it, but it is ok"

Yeah, those never should have been stickied, I never noticed it until someone brought it up in meta, cause I ignore most stickies. Wish someone had mentioned it earlier.

Matthew is a lot of things but I do think he's honest.
No idea why he made this bet though.

18 pages of chatter about something none of the posters are involved in. You don't understand why I made this bet?  Wink

EDIT: Okay now someone involved posts  Lips sealed

I have some ideas why, based on your posts about the community., don't want to spoil your fun though.

No shit sherlock, but that's is irrelevant to my question.  He claims "this box was not public facing", then provides an ip that the attacker connected from.  So which is it?  How did the attacker connect to a box that was not accessible?

there are no proof that hacker hack his site maybe some other problem he faced but hacker didnot hack his website no record of hacker or hacking

Are you even reading what you're replying to?

And stop with the bold, there's no reason to bold everything you say since it's nonsense anyway.

Zhou must have made another donation to the forum - this thread has been "mothballed" and there is now no active thread on general discussion about his $500,000 theft.   Undecided

There wasn't active thread in general before I moved it either  Wink. I'm sure people will be more than happy to make a bunch of new threads when something moves forward.

I wish somebody would pay me for moving all the service related discussions, I'm gonna get carpal tunnel.

I think most have conceded, but some are still holding out hope for the 9th and that something magical will happen.

Also keep in mind some of the ones saying they don't think it's a ponzi have to say that, since they took other peoples money to invest in it. Big ol can of legal worms there.
2437  Other / Meta / Re: "Long-term offers" - gonna have to tackle this 1 eventually on: September 03, 2012, 11:32:59 AM
Utterly disgraceful.

I know, what a dick, letting people make their own choices.

3) oddly enough, almost admitting to save face in the future, this thread "how to identify a Ponzi" is also stickied - the only 2 threads stickied there, and the views and pages of "WPW" far exceeds the Ponzi-identifier...

I don't see how it's odd at all, it's pretty consistent with giving people the information they need and letting them decide what they want to do with their money. As for one having more views than the other, well one has been up for ~4 months, the other for 3 weeks.

Giving people the info is a lot different than actively participating in such a scheme  Smiley

I don't.
2438  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Putting your money where Pirate's mouth is. on: September 03, 2012, 11:31:04 AM
I'm amazed that people are still using GPUMax. Even you were getting value for money, wouldn't you feel morally obliged not to use it?

zlol

Pirate needs to finish his laundry. Don't bother him.  Tongue

When will the bet end? (Or is it over already?)

It's over, as of a few days ago when two weeks had passed without withdrawals being processed. Vandroiy won obviously.

How did a sockpuppet get out of Newbie Jail, yet this is his first post ?

Nice try, Forum Staff.

Not his first post, he deleted the first posts.

Nice try imsaguy.
