2502  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Shrinking - The Long View on: September 03, 2011, 01:11:32 AM
Let me get this straight -

Item A) Synaptic has in his head an idea for something that would totally change the world as we know it, benefiting billions of people, but he won't even bother to write it down publicly because then he won't profit from it.

Item B) He hates Bitcoin in part because early adopters profited.

Item C) He is soo amazingly brilliant that he's created this idea in his head which solves all the problems of Bitcoin, creating something so perfect as to "not even require peer review," and yet he's not brilliant enough to figure out a way to profit from it.

Item D) He's not even smart enough to spend an hour reading patent law and realize that if he has a "process invention" that is unique and valuable, that it is 100% patentable and he could spend a few thousand dollars to make that happen, then release his idea to the world and make millions.

All taken together, it appears Synaptic won't even invest a few thousand bucks into what would be the most revolutionary technology the world has ever seen, and instead prefers to insult a wide community of Bitcoin enthusiasts who are actually doing things and building an amazing system, and his main gripe is that those enthusiasts who did stuff early on have made money from doing so.

And according to his ethical system, it's not okay to profit as an "early adopter" who is actually performing actions, but it is okay profit as an early "ponderer" who thinks of stuff but refrains from action.

What a champ. It saddens me that a man of his intellect and moral fortitude is not a Bitcoin ally.
2503  Other / Archival / Re: Would you subscribe to a kink.com site if you could pay with Bitcoin? on: September 02, 2011, 11:48:29 PM

Just guarantee kink more business. Guarantee it without putting any specific number on it. I have confidence in the buying power of this community...

Ehhhh please don't do that. Bitcoin is strong and compelling enough over the long term that false claims are not only unnecessary, but counter-productive (and immoral). We're not selling used cars here.
2504  Other / Archival / Re: Would you subscribe to a kink.com site if you could pay with Bitcoin? on: September 02, 2011, 10:08:55 PM
One more comment OP - the main advantage to Kink will be the zero chargeback risk AND the fact that they can accept customers from any nation in the world without risk. THAT should be your focus when/if you speak with them.
2505  Other / Archival / Re: Would you subscribe to a kink.com site if you could pay with Bitcoin? on: September 02, 2011, 10:07:39 PM
Maybe...but as it is, bitcoin is too volatile to be accepted..the porn site will be at a huge loss, unless they charge a bit more than they do for USD.

Bit-pay.com permits merchant to accept Bitcoins, and receive the money as USD automatically into their bank account. Thus eliminating all exchange rate risk.
2506  Other / Archival / Re: Would you subscribe to a kink.com site if you could pay with Bitcoin? on: September 02, 2011, 10:06:54 PM
OP-  Great idea to approach them.  However, conducting a poll here is probably not a good market indicator. You should poll a group of people who are already subscribing to Kink and see whether they would prefer to have an anonymous payment method in which personal financial details are not stored on the company's server.

Remember, the advantage of BTC to the consumer is not just the anonymity, but also the fact that his/her credit card details aren't stored somewhere. As it stands now, my credit card info could be hacked from any server where I've purchased stuff (amazon and dozens of others). But with btc, a hacker can't gain anything from my by hacking the company's server.  The corollary to this is that the company doesn't have to invest resources in storing and protecting customer records.

How happy would Sony have been if their recent hacks didn't release 300,000 customer details =)
2507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TED discussion - Bitcoin - Commerce without Borders on: September 02, 2011, 08:25:39 PM
How about getting it working first? Like a client that doesn't take a day or three to download the whole block chain. Isn't there a client coming that doesn't need to download the entire block chain?

The Android app satisfies that need for mobile users. Fully functional wallet is only about 30-40mb I think.

There is a huge amount of missing infrastructure, like merchant software etc etc etc.

Bit-pay.com is leading the charge on merchant software. They just finished an OpenCart plugin and are working on subsequent plugins over the coming weeks.

Also, badass open source POS system here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o84SfChQ-S8&feature=BFa&list=FLA5mKDEEJaTCScoGRe0IXZg&lf=mh_lolz

Talk about a double standard.  This "discussion" is basically a commercial for Shell.  We're not even a corperation.

Damn.
2509  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ARTICLE] Bitcoin To Collapse? on: September 02, 2011, 05:28:23 AM

If we get to the situation where BTC disappears and a SC is worth $100 USD (based on Bitcoin economy dividing into the limited SC) then it's going to be a tricky situation.

Hmmm, tricky yes. But, what I'm actually more worried about at that point is figuring out how to obtain my bacon when every pig is able to escape my grasp, given their newly sprouted wings.
2510  Other / Meta / Re: Please remove these stickies on: September 02, 2011, 05:20:02 AM
Trojan wallet stealer should probably remain, it's good to be aware of that for any newcomers. MtGox fiasco is probably old enough now to remove the sticky.
2511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tomorrow I want to hide a wallet.dat somewhere in Western NC. on: September 02, 2011, 04:20:49 AM
Sounds cool! But a zip drive?!   Grin

I think if you want this to be a good publicity driver, then the website needs to be very nice. Like a fun pirate treasure map. It needs to look really slick, and the treasure needs to be worth at least $1,000. You should encrypt the wallet, and then if a contestant finds it, he can simply send a photo of himself holding the disc (using some visual proof) and then he's declared winner and you send him the password.

Also... does anyone live in Western NC? =)

2512  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / WebGL Globe question on: September 02, 2011, 03:49:32 AM
Let me say I LOVE the WebGL Globe:  http://www.weusecoins.com/globe-bitcoin/

I have been known to stare at it for hours, spinning it around and pondering over the ramifications of such an amazing thing. BUT I can think of something even cooler. That globe is getting a data feed, yes? Is there any way to get the history of this feed, or store the feed on a per day basis? I'd like to see this globe as it changes over time (like over the next 12 months). Such a visual would be both beautiful and effective for Bitcoin marketing purposes.

Also, is there a way to show numerical values of the spikes? I understand tall vs. short, but numbers would be nice also.

I'm not a dev, so I have no idea how to do any of this =)  Any helpers? I might be willing to pay some btc...
2513  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wordpress Bitcoin Shopping Cart Plugin on: September 02, 2011, 03:35:55 AM
Quote
Bit-pay has developed an easy-to-use plugin payment module for opencart.  The bit-pay module can:

1.       Create an invoice based on an order total in USD or BTC
2.       Create a unique payment address for each sale
3.       Auto-forward the bitcoins to the merchant’s wallet, or sell them and transfer USD by ACH
4.       Track your sales summary and trends

Opencart is a powerful open-source shopping cart platform for online merchants.  Many merchants in the bitcoin community use OpenCart, and many of them have been unable to process payments for several weeks now.

We moved the OpenCart module to the top of our list, ahead of other planned developments, so that we can meet the immediate needs of the bitcoin community!

If you are using OpenCart and you would like to accept bitcoins, apply for a merchant account with Bit-pay to get started.

https://bit-pay.com

The opencart extension can be directly downloaded here:
https://bit-pay.com/downloads/bitpayOpenCartExtension-0.1.zip

It is also available via the opencart extension marketplace:

2514  Economy / Economics / Re: Italian town starts printing its own money - they need Bitcoin! on: September 02, 2011, 02:35:16 AM
I think you guys are missing the important point Smiley

A government like that would not adopt Bitcoin, because it is protesting the austerity measures. Meaning, it doesn't want municipal budgets cut. Meaning, it will simply create a new currency and print what's needed to pay the bills.

So they call it a "protest" but really it's just that they don't want to live in economic reality. They'd rather print. Best of luck to them.
2515  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ARTICLE] Bitcoin To Collapse? on: September 01, 2011, 03:32:56 PM
Most of the value in a crypto currency is determined by its level of adoption, not by minor tweaks in the protocols.

+1  SolidCoin is but Bitcoin with some tweaked rules. If those rules are so important to have changed, then the community will come to demand it of Bitcoin's dev team. The only fundamental difference between the two, is that Bitcoin has the brand, the vast community, the history, the resources, the infrastructure, a dev team that has been dedicated even before this became "profitable," and a few dozen other tertiary benefits of first-mover advantage.

For SolidCoin to interest me in the least, it would need to offer SEVERE advantages. But instead it is a silly and distracting tweak. Any economists out there that want to study bubble patterns, watch these fork chains. The entertainment value and the inoculation of the core Bitcoin protocol are the only advantages of the forks.

That said, someone COULD create something significantly better than Bitcoin, of course. I just haven't seen it yet.

2517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where will stop, the size of the database bitcoin. 1GB+ on: August 31, 2011, 10:53:53 PM
Use the excellent Android app as an example. It's a fully-functional wallet, but only about 30MB.
2518  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Article - Bitcoin, Bernanke, and My Lunch Money on: August 31, 2011, 06:25:54 PM

At the end of the article it mentions you are involved in the free-state project. Is there alot of interest in bitcoin within the free state project?

The interest is growing quickly. Libertarians in general tend to be very skeptical of any money that is not silver or gold (understandably). As they come to see Bitcoin as the greatest enabler of international free markets I think they'll start loving it. If you know Free Talk Live (national radio show) they're talking btc frequently, and this year at PorcFest Bitcoin was a very hot topic.

Rumor has it the FSP will be accepting btc donations shortly...  Grin

Hi all, I was asked for a write-up on Bitcoin for Silver Circle's blog. This was posted today (don't forget to reddit!):
