Until when we I didn't read the newsletter, I was sure that it was a trolling attempt. I can't believe its real... 65 days of delays to install a new production line that will double the capacity... Even if it was real, what a deal...

One day, the thermal entropy of the universe will be zero.
2563  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: May 01, 2013, 06:45:35 PM

that was a 1:1 bet that nobody dared to take. Now it's going to $95 and still nobody wants to play with me.

I actually wanted to, but reading your put definition made me mad and i did not spend more time on it. When you said that you would have accepted John as escrow, i wanted to bet; but hey, i was from my smartphone...

Now you bet that we will never see 95 again?
2564  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: May 01, 2013, 03:49:51 PM
Has not yet received the item on the order.

Another month of questions: where a shipment?
When they start shipping batch 2 you can start complaining!

The Chinese culture is really one of its own.

Arepo is stating facts. Don't really know why some of you are so shure on the sort term bull, when everything logically leads to the opposite.
+1

On the other side it looks like that rpietila can only profit when the market goes up; if so, he should take a one month long holiday.

I think next time in the future like with batch two, I will only announce things at their worst possible outcome, so people won't complain as much and there's nothing to troll. e.g.
We are already over their worst possible outcome...
And no newsletter. It's starting to get scaring.

You know what my biggest hope is? A crash to 50-10$, so that i can buy cheap coins and forget about the ones the avalon should mine.

Well, tomorrow is the first day of their missed deadline, it will be a good day to send out a newsletter updating us.
2569  Other / Off-topic / About the recent OVH hack (that affected bitcoin-central, instawallet, slush') on: April 30, 2013, 10:20:32 PM
This is the official update from ovh: http://forum.ovh.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6592

Quote
On April 26th, we detected an internal problem with the generation of the 21 characters. 2 out of the 3 random functions that we use in the code were not generating an authentic random sequence. It was possible to request a password change for a customer ID,
and then find the "unique" URL emailed to the customer by brute force. The problem was found by an internal developer on April 26th at 11:03:14 and it was fixed at 12:54:13. The cause of the problem was linked to the rand function used in this part of the code. It was not patched to the same extent as the rest of the code at the time of activating the script execution cache. We have replaced the old function of 3 sequences to generate 21 characters with 2 authentic random functions to generate 64 characters.

We then ran searches on our databases to verify whether the loophole had been exploited and if so, when. We tracked the log of password changes for your IDs for the last 3 years. We actually have authorisation from the CNIL (the French data protection authority) to archive and exploit all our back office logs for the last 10 years, precisely for this type of situation.

We detected three password changes carried out by brute force on 3 customers IDs with active services. These 3 cases involved an attack aimed at the "bitcoin" community that uses OVH services. The hacker seems to have found the loophole on April 23rd at
22:00 and ran a significant number of tests to develop their tactics over a period of 1 hour. At 23:00 it had been perfected and the 1st ID was hacked, followed by the other 2 the next day (all from the "bitcoin community"). We have been in contact with these customers but the quality of the exchanges prevented us from obtaining sufficient information to identify this loophole. Thanks to our internal developers, we have fixed the problem in a totally independent manner. Only then did we begin to make the connection between the loophole that we had just fixed annd these 3 customers. We have certainly learnt a lesson on how to communicate with clients in this type of situation.

If you still have 7 characters of entropy, that's 60^7 combinations. If the attacker hacked the account in one hour (as they claim), how did the attacker sent 777600000 requests per second for one hour without them noticing? One billion requests per second, that's not something you usually handle. Nor your servers, you would crash anytime.

Something is missing from this story, or i'm blinded and i'm missing something myself.

Interestingly I also wonder why he was talking about Batch 4, whether this was a typo or a mistranslation.  That threw me off considering there's never been any other mention of batch 4 yet.
He is not talking about batch 4...
2571  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: For anyone curious about Avalon Batch Shipping statuses see Nzahng's post on: April 30, 2013, 10:06:58 PM
I'm sure that someone already translated it, it's just that i can't find the post right now. It was the first post of a topic, so maybe surfing among these pages i can find it.
I read it as "batch 2 is small, it will be easy to ship it during that 15 days".
2572  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: For anyone curious about Avalon Batch Shipping statuses see Nzahng's post on: April 30, 2013, 09:56:53 PM
It seems like the plan all along was to update modify the hardware and improve on Batch 1, only releasing units very slowly starting on April 15th and then really ramping up speed later in May.  But you know, actually telling us this in more specific terms would've been nice.
A Chinese user did a great translation, and i personally read it as "batch 2 ships very fast from the 15 to the 30 of april". Why do you say that the plan was all along to ship only a few units in april?
2573  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: April 30, 2013, 09:25:35 PM
Place your bids 120 will soon be close!
I read this as a "please, don't let 120 fall"
Not as in "easy money if you buy at 120"

The truth is that the media mania period expired and we are going down for some time. I personally don't think that 120 will hold. Long term bullish, medium term bear.
2574  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Somebody is trying to steal batch 1 Avalon shippments from DHL! on: April 30, 2013, 09:22:57 PM
I swear to god I'm about ready to buy a plane ticket to HKG, knock on some doors, and fly home with the thing on my lap.
And you are not alone. However, this was defined as impossible from Avalon.
2575  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [2] countdown! on: April 30, 2013, 09:07:12 PM
Guys, give them a break - no news is good news. They updated on the 15th, they said there was a small delay, chill and stop freaking out, its pointless.
Nope, they said that they shipped the first batch 2 units (to whom? noone received them) and that the situation would improve dramatically during the past week.
The situation didn't improved dramatically... And updating us takes 5 minutes.

So... No news is bad news.
2576  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [2] countdown! on: April 30, 2013, 08:55:21 PM
Will they try to slow it, so it's not noticeable?
They need 2 more weeks so that they can build batch 2 units with another fab working together with the first one. The first fab is doing their avalons, and will keep to do so; the hashrate will keep increasing at the same constant speed.
In the meanwhile, with the second fab, they will build and ship the customer's avalons, unafecting the hashrate until when they ship.

This is my best guess (and was not formulated today).

What i'm quite sure of is that a batch 2/3 avalon will have a minimum roi of 75btc. If they don't make their customers take their money back due to their greed, they will have problems. So i'm guessing that a batch 2 avalon will mine 100btc, a batch 3 75btc.

I needed to investigate the gif, the guy is still alive - he will never walk again, but he is alive.

I am just saying that it is not the end of the world for me and for other people also. I agree that it is personal choice but my choice is to die poor i will not need the money in afterlife. So we have to spend them in one way or another. How can this happen working 7x24?Wink
Sure, money isn't as important as having a great life - however i think that we all agree on that and that it's not exactly in topic. Losing money surely doesn't bring to a better life.
