lazybear are you interested in a bounty to release the source code (maybe cleaned up a bit?) your optimized miner?

If not, I'll probably play around with the code myself tomorrow and see if I can come up with something, or maybe Noodle Doodle will take an interest.

smooth, NoodleDoodle just said on IRC his latest optimizations are 4x faster on Windows. Untested on Linux so far but he'll push the source to the git repo soon.

We'll be at 1 million network hashrate pretty soon. Tongue
262  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 16, 2014, 10:26:47 AM

I agree on the implementation part. They'll have to take complex, obfuscated code and try to put it in without breaking anything. They'll likely need someone who's damn good at higher math, if not a cryptographer.

Yes, I expect this should restrict adoption in Bitcoin-based alts for a significant time to come. CryptoNote was a genuine research effort with professional cryptographers involved. The result is actually a modified version of what exists in academic literature rather than a direct implementation (in order to block double spends). Impressive stuff. Easy to promise, but delivery is going to be tough. I do hope someone tries, though. Maybe we'll actually get something well-documented and understandable. Cheesy

This is just one aspect being developed:

Improvements over this mixing solution are due to include the following features:

* Master Nodes These nodes handle the mixing through random selection -

Fundamentals, gotta have those fundamentals  Wink

I was actually one of the people promoting integrating ring signatures into DRK, but someone (AlexGR?) noted that one issue is that it renders masternodes obsolete. This is a problem when a significant portion of the total coins is held in masternodes and they would no longer be 'locked up' - i.e. supply shock. It also removes the interesting quasi-PoS aspect of DRK, which might be a powerful economic factor in DRK's value. On the other hand, if the masternodes were retained, then it's an antiquated 10% tax on miners, which (in the long run) would be passed on to users doing transactions.

Thoughts, eduffield and others? The ideal case seems to be to improve DarkSend with another solution that retains the utility of the masternodes.

(In unrelated news, Zerocoin/ZeroCash is releasing a conference paper very soon with significant changes that some of you may be interested in.)
264  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 16, 2014, 08:54:19 AM
Now that Evan is also implementing ring signatures into Darksend, I don't see Monero pulling through ...

This isn't some copy-paste function. Wink I would still be interested in seeing how well this can ported over into an existing chain. It would take a lot of work.

(On another note, I originally thought that would be a good idea, but now I have some reservations due to the status of the masternodes. If they're rendered obsolete, several hundred thousands coins come into the market.)
265  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 16, 2014, 07:18:09 AM
anyone want to explain why Monero is a good investment?

Best privacy implementation in the cryptocurrency space. Read the first post if you care to know why. Whether privacy itself is worth anything is up to you.

About the privacy ,How dose MRO Compared with DRK

Superior in just about every way. There is a direct comparison with DRK and similar approaches in the first post under "How does this compare to other anonymous solutions?".
266  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: [MRO] Monero logo contest - 600 MRO bounty on: May 16, 2014, 06:55:12 AM
super simple app type of logo, works in any color and size

Something I would find interesting is the last design here from sadface, but with a more aggressive M (that one looks somewhat submissive because of the sloped corners). Perhaps like the one syris used in his shield earlier or the very clean one Bosco pointed out.

Another thing to try would be what I described above, but with the M being black in a white background enclosed in a black ring ("ring signature" being a core technology of this coin, heh).

Check this guy's logo out: http://mattiamesaglio.it/

It's clean, modern, and has quite a mysterious quality to it which ties in nicely with Monero's anonymous transaction feature. It would also look good and memorable as an app icon on a mobile phone.

I have no logo making skills, but if someone can do something similar....

I'm a fan of flat, ultra-minimalist designs like this. Bitcoin was simple and it worked.

Also, all submissions should propose a "button"-like graphic since that's what represents the currency on exchanges, rankings, payment processors, etc. It can be circular or something else entirely (like syris's shield). A stylized rendering of the word Monero to go along with this is optional.
269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [BCN] Bytecoin (CPU-mining, true anonymity) on: May 15, 2014, 07:46:39 PM
No graphical wallet so far ? Sad

No, no GUI wallet.
I'm working on one but I'm stuck trying to get QT to work with the Cmake project with QT Creator.

I've modified a billion different environment variables, wrote some Cmake code, and I don't know where to go from here except to seek professional help getting this build environment set up, or re-install QT and try again, or switch to using a Visual Studio SLN and the QT Creator plugin for a GUI Designer.

After I get QT to work with the project (It also uses Boost and CryptoNote and Cmake build system), a QT Gui is pretty easy to make.  Would just have to send signals to the GUI slots with updates like blockchain download status for the daemon, etc, and that stuff is printed to console output in the entry point, so hopefully it should be painless.

Anyone interested in splitting the bounty?  Cheesy
Also, anyone interested in earning a few bucks in BTC or DRK?  I'll pay you to help me get QT to work with this project.

Even though simpler GUIs are already out, if you can make a Qt wallet, I think a new bounty can be raised to pay for that. Cross-platform is very important.
270  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 15, 2014, 06:02:35 AM

you mean 25 hashes right not kilohashes or megahashes? so only 25 math problems solved per second? are these math problems much more difficult than X11 math or scrypt math?

so would you estimate with all the above hardware i could reasonably expect to solve 2 blocks per week?

Yes, just hashes per second. The total network hashrate is only about 300 kH/s. The proof of work here is intentionally much slower (memory bound) than X11 or scrypt in order to favor CPUs.

I'm not familiar with the other CPUs listed -- if combined they're about equal to 1-1.5 i5-4670K's, then you can expect 2 blocks per week. The easiest thing to do is just test the hashrates, sum them up, and calculate your average blocks per day using the formula: Hashrate / (Diff/60) * 24 * 60 blocks per day, with each block giving about 16.9 MRO.
271  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 15, 2014, 04:47:29 AM
just curious, how many blocks do you guys think a machine with an i5 4670k could find in a week?

I have a couple of gpu rigs but the cpu's aren't doing anything

an i5 4670k
an edit: AMD sempron 145
an A8 vision AMD laptop processor
and 5x Dell M6300 dual core?
i had these machines on darkcoin up till now but i believe monero is a superiors currency compared to darkcoin and would rather use our computing power to generate this one

my grandfather is a systems programmer for IBM as well as a former microsoft coder...and I am a miner...we have tons of cpu power around here...

anyone willing to help me figure out if i should put the time into mining this coin or not? est blocks per week with all these machines?

Or do you even want me too =P

An i5-4670K would manage about 20-25 H/s. This would get you a little less than 1 block per week (~14-15 MRO/week). You're not competing against GPUs and this coin is younger so this is probably more profitable.
272  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: [MRO] Monero logo contest - 300 MRO bounty on: May 14, 2014, 10:30:59 PM
Nice, Quanttek. What if the key were below the text i.e. attached at the bottom of the M instead of the top? I don't know if it would be better, but it's worth testing and getting feedback. Underlined text looks more "normal" than overlined.

Also, maybe equalize the white space between the M/O and R/O to the same as between the other letters (increase them or decrease the others).
273  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 14, 2014, 07:42:14 AM
This is good news . Does anyone know who runs this exchange?

The one who posted  Cheesy

wzttide was in the IRC channel asking for MRO to test integration, so this is indeed a functioning CryptoNote exchange. It has more advanced functions like stop loss orders that aren't on Cryptsy/MintPal/etc. Added to OP. Smiley

Vote on icurrex if you haven't: https://www.icurrex.com/vote

You have to register to vote, but it's quick. Seems to be a new but remarkably polished site. Time will tell if they're secure, but I do like their attitude. They seem to understand that MRO is something new, so they might actually manage to successfully integrate it.

So if one can't see the distribution of this coin how do we know there wasn't a giant premine or some way for the devs to just "counterfeit" coins en masse?  Huh

Easy, write the block chain explorer that hasn't yet bubbled up to the top of the development list for the devs that are working hard (and with no bounties) on implementing and extending a new to the most of us coin technology.  This crypto is not like btc so tools like a block explorer have to be created without the aide of copy and paste.  80 + pages of comments seem to make this fairly clear.

Too blunt?

You don't have to have a web-based blockchain explorer. Type "help" in the daemon and you can get the commands to print out blockchain data right on the terminal. An explorer doesn't give unaccessible information either here or in Bitcoin. It's just an aggregator.

So if one can't see the distribution of this coin how do we know there wasn't a giant premine or some way for the devs to just "counterfeit" coins en masse?  Huh

These are two different things. By distribution, we mean how are coins distributed across addresses. That's relatively meaningless with stealth addressing implemented.

But there is still a blockchain so you can check the blocks yourself to see when the chain started and how many coins the blocks produced. This is no different from Bitcoin or any Bitcoin clone.

I am baffled by the complete lack of instructions for the software associated with this coin. Can someone put some instructions on how to get started with the wallet and mining? I am sure there is something within one of these 80+ pages but do we all have to reinvent the wheel?

OK, I ate my own words after looking at monero.cc.

It was linked under "Getting Started" in the OP.

this is the error i cannot figure out??

http://pastebin.com/3Le99xg3

any help 12.04 ubuntu

Outdated compiler (it doesn't seem to support -std=c++11). Update to a newer g++.

Is there any way to see what the distribution of this coin is?

No, it's anonymous (which is the point Tongue). A separate public key is generated for each input and they're difficult to link by blockchain analysis.
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 14, 2014, 01:32:59 AM
Okay, one feature we REALLY need in simplewallet is a command history buffer. It doesn't have to be persistent; it can start with an empty buffer every time. Having to retype things kinda sucks. And I automatically press the up arrow and get garbage that I have to erase.
Duly noted, you are not the only one to wish for it!
Use rlwrap

$ rlwrap ./simpleminer --wallet mywallet
Thanks!
http://monero.cc/blog/get-command-history-linux-rlwrap/

You incorrectly credited me on the website (it was smooth). Also, it should be ./simplewallet not ./simpleminer.
279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bounty for open source ByteCoin/Monero GUI on: May 14, 2014, 01:23:11 AM
Mono doesn't port WPF to other platforms.
http://www.mono-project.com/WPF

The only real solution would be to either use one of the two largest platform independent GUI frameworks -> Qt or GTK+

Hmm, was afraid so. Will have to look into other UI's. As far as I can tell other parts of the .NET framework I used are all available in mono. Maybe I'll make an alternate UI which is compatible with mono (WinForms is supported, could be an option).

Meanwhile I did another update (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6522303/CryptoNoteWallet_latest.zip):
- Transactions tab implemented.
- Statusbar shows number of connected peers.
- Status bar show progress (text) while downloading blockchain.
- Log windows properly scroll to bottom on new text.

The transaction tab is very rudimentary at the moment. I plan on grouping transaction by transaction id, and offering the ability to expand them to see the individual coins send.

Next stop: mining.

Great work. The solo mining phase is about to come to an end because the two pool implementations are almost done.  So you will want to be able to command simpleminer, not just the daemon.
