2661  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S4 Setup [HD] on: October 18, 2015, 03:21:56 AM
Is there any way to lower the fan speed further than with the smit's slow fan firmware? It won't go under 2520RPM even though its cold and its the only thing making noise in my apartment now.

The S5's are completely silent now.
S4s will do okay with their front fans swapped out but if you're saying temps are really good then you could remove the front fans altogether. I wouldn't recommend unplugging them and leaving them in the case as they're restrictive by design. In terms of noise levels it won't reduce it much but it'll at least save you 30W. Besides that you can't get them slower without firmware as they're modified by PWM signals and not voltage.

I see. Well its already running with only 3 fans, and i'm really interested in getting them to run at 1000 to 2000 RPM. The temps at the moment are at 40c and RPM is 2520. I already have the smit's firmware, does this allow to set a variable somewhere to get it lower than its set minimum?

Any method of making these fans quiet would be nice, short of swapping out the fans, since i would rather not buy more hardware for this S4.

If there is no known way to do this, then thanks anyways for your replies dogie!

Even if you are trying for a more quiet miner.  I would put a replacement fan.  They are designed in a push/pull.

S4's are not one I would recommend for apartment use if your looking for quiet as a general rule.

Its actually cooler than the S5's for the same noise. But i hit a wall now with the S4 not wanting to go lower.

I am unsure what Smit's firmware does or any additional variables, why don't you flash the slow fan firmware? Have you got any weaker fans you could test with?

That is the slow fan firmware. It just won't go lower than 2520. Much better than the 4k it used to go at, but i still want it to go lower. There is no temp reason to not go lower so its the bottom limit smit set. I'd like to set it lower.

He most likely didn't foresee someone feeding 0-10c air directly into the miner. Any slower at 20-30c ambient would melt the thing so it must of not been necessary to let it go under 2520-3000 which seem to be the slow fan firmware's range.
2662  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Rebuilding Damaged ATX EVGA PCI-e cables. Where to get parts in Canada? on: October 18, 2015, 03:18:03 AM
I have about a dozen of these cables that are burnt or damaged from the same source, this is the worse one;
https://i.imgur.com/2I2b8fW.jpg?1

I plan on cutting the burnt part and re-crimping new connectors on them. To do this i would need to find an inexpensive source of these pin and connectors, something of decent enough quality so they don't become the weak link.

I currently have this tool;
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251814735843?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

And this wire stripper (diff color but seem to be exactly the same thing);
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61S03eg2KxL._SL1000_.jpg

So for clarity;

-What tool do i need to crimp those PCI-e pins if either of the 2 i have won't work?

-Where is a inexpensive place that ship to Canada that i could buy what i need for to rebuild the connectors?

What model PSU are you using?  Is it modular where you can get a new cord or do you really need to re-use those cables.  Generally speaking reusing a burnt cable is a bad idea.

What miner did you have it hooked up with that damage happened?

EVGA's G2.

The part that goes into the PSU is mint, only one time out of the 10 times was there any surge back from the shit asic (GAW rebranded Zeus's) connectors darkened that end.

This happen accross 3 PSU, its not the PSU is the shit connectors that came with the ASIC and the replacement i got, they all had bad connection so they would warm up. Over the course of 1.5years they eventually melted the connections.

The bad portion of the wire only extend 1-2cm, cutting the bad part should be a-ok. You can visibly see corrosion up until a part.

Both GAW Falcon's eventually burnt their corresponding connectors.

Is it an issue if any female using bitcoins? We don't even know who in this forum is a real male or female even if they indicate in the profile that they are indeed male or female  Undecided

Meh i told one woman that she could heat up her place for free with some quiet ASIC, or even profit. She replied exactly; "I don't buy into that BTC thing." Then i pushed a bit and gave her a link, show how small they are.

She saw the S3's "exposed wires" as she said, which was the PWM cable that come out of the fan and goes inside the closed husk.

Then the reason became "my mother barely let me heat up the place, even during winter."

She's nice but when you come up with so many excuses, i think it clearly show its hard for many to adopt it.
2664  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you used Bitcoin as Real money to buy Real/physical goods? on: October 18, 2015, 02:50:45 AM
No, I haven't try it.
I am new to bitcoin and I don't know how to buy things using this bitcoin.

You may give your first try on NewEgg, though it's online shopping.  Wink

You just select Bitcoin at Checkout and it will give you 15 minutes to send a quoted amount of BTC to a specific BTC address. The order will be valid the second it hit the network and then it work like normal after that.

There's tons of shop to buy pretty much anything and they all work the same.

To me it looks like each miner has an optimal operating temp and some react well to "heating" by increased temp.

From my experience, asics that perform better when hot are usually the first ones to go up in smoke  Sad

it very well may be the case, so I don't advocate doing it.

That is very weird. My S5's get lower HWE% when their temps are at around 45-50c versus 60+. Some of the older hardware i have, S1's included even seem to get less HWE% when they are super cooled. For instance i have a S1 that has been running for 2 days, normally the HWE% is at 1.6%, now its at 1.24% and the temp is 33c.

Edit: Look at that sexy HWE% with max efficient overclock;

2668  Bitcoin / Mining support / Cheap Easy Safe paint/tar to cover leds on miners? on: October 18, 2015, 02:14:50 AM
I have quite a bit of miners at home and its a light show, while i would rather be simply in the dark. Is there some kind of paint or such that i could use to cover the leds? It would be nice if it would be something easy to get online, like on ebay.

Electric Tape work very poorly (it doesn't stick)

Would silicon based goo work? It could be advantageous if its removable, just in case.

i barely know any males in real life that use bitcoin other than me lol, i can only imgaine how hard it would be to find a female Sad

No one IRL where i live is interested. So female... ish.

I tried to get some people to invest in XPY and they did. But they didnt dump when i told them to, because it was under 20$, for 14$ even though they paid a few dollars for, they could of had a nice ROI, but they wanted to wait for 20$. So they lost all their investment and blamed it on me.

Since then they don't want anything to do with Crypto. Even though ASIC on free electricity for them isint of interest, since "crypto is scam". Heh.
2671  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Oct 11 to Nov 11 Sidehack stick pool club. on: October 18, 2015, 12:56:40 AM
Even if it's not the final image, it does look nice and is extremely useful. Thanks for pulling this together cryptoglance.

It might be worth keeping the "lastupdate" to know when a worker last mined in case they've dropped out. This won't affect winnings (if there are any), but it still might be useful to be able to say that worker "blah" has not mined since X date.

As I'm sure cryptoglance is aware, the lastupdate int value is just the the number of seconds since the C epoch. It's easy to convert to an actual date/time value.

This is the current interface. We only really care about shares.

2672  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: antminer s5 wont stay running. power supply issue? on: October 18, 2015, 12:03:36 AM
all four pci6 pins read normal. 3 grounds and 3 hots per cable, hots being 12v.

i've tried this with an s3 as well with the same results so it must be psu related.

If they stay at 12v under load, the problem isint the PSU. But you really only have a single PSU anywhere in your possession? That would let you quickly troubleshoot whats the bad component here.
2673  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Recommended Safety & Cooling on: October 17, 2015, 11:58:02 PM
you can change your fan, if i'm correct the s5 mount 120mm, you can some artif fan f12 or the one with the pwn and install that instead, i've done the same thing with those scrypt miners, and they working fine, and were very quite

or you can undervolt it, but it require a little of experience with electricity

yep, he can always undervolt it, but process seems a little bit complicated, i dont know if this is your case or not, but here you can find a guide about how to do it with an S1 -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=526060.0

i hope it helps you Wink

You can not Penmod a S5, however. My tip would be to set the fan down to 25%-40% depending on the ambient temp. At 25% they are pretty quiet imo.

I would watch ambiant temp before doing this.  They can get pretty warm on S5's.  They do not have a full case and only 1 fan so you should have a cold ambient to turn down that much.

S5's just run warm and are not quiet by design.

For reference, at the moment they are taking in air from a outdoor stream pulled in by a box fan. The outdoor temp is 10c, i have put 2 S1 fan on it running at 2k RPM, which is insanely quiet compared to one stock fan at stock speed. The miner's temp is 50c~

With 1x Stock S5 fan, i get same temps at 2.8k RPM which is still much better than full speed and bearable if in an other, closed room.

You would have a low outside temp to count on this.  If it is still warm in OP or others area it is not near as good with 25 percent fan.

But I admit it's getting cooler in many places at this time of year.  I'm not sure if most can count of so low temps yet all day to run so low.

Yup. 40% with a box fan blowing air through worked for me during summer, however.

I was able to run the miner at full OC with temps ~60c. During some crazy hot day, 30c+ i had to raise sometimes during the day to up to 65% to stay in the low 60c's.

As long as OP and anyone else make sure to temps dont go to upper 60s or 70s, then the miner should be fine.

Atm my temps are in mid 40s.

During most of summer I had around a little over 12k actually around 14k when looking at my spreadsheets.  I forgot about the C1's I was running in a different area.  So i had to use a little more I used 2 of these in front of miner's to push hot air away from miners - http://www.lowes.com/pd_416730-11292-SFDC2-600T_0__?Ntt=416730&UserSearch=416730&productId=4755305&rpp=32

I had one of these to help push air from window - http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-2265QM-20-Inch-Performance-Velocity/dp/B0073CQ9XA/ . And a second window I had a homemade fan with an attic fan.  So it really moved air.

So that worked great on moving air in and through miners.  But the problem then becomes you need to exhaust the air.  I did this mainly with a big gable upgrade - http://www.homedepot.com/p/QuietCool-Professional-3013-CFM-Power-Gable-Mount-Attic-Fan-AFG-PRO-3-0/206047381 .   And with this some vents in ceiling.

But all that got me through summer mining which originally did not think I could do.  So very happy in the end.  I will enjoy the free winter air to save a few bucks coming up.

Thats pretty impressive, that must of moved air. I use 2 of these, different brand, 15$ each;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Holmes-Box-Fan-White-/191637946943

One as intake, one as outake. I really wish i could use something with serious CFM for summer time, but i'm assuming the one you used are kinda noisy and probably not fit for an apartment?

Correct you would need an area just for mining.  With that many CFM the fan's are louder then the machines.   But it really does push a LOT of air.

It was kinda a lot of testing and trial/error to get it to work great.  But it eventually worked great for a mining area.   The exhaust I was hoping to use old, but it just did not keep up.  It took a pretty big upgrade on exhaust for it to handle pushing all that air out.

I might try to setup a small warehouse in the future if i can get funding. I know someone who might be interested in starting up something small in maybe sometime 2016, with the hydro electricity, even the lowest industrial class electricity would be 0.03-0.04$/kWh.

But i'll really need something small yet dense to get industrial contract for electricity and figure out how to keep the temps safe to cool the place. Burning the place down is probably not good on ROI.

But for now, i'm sticking to my apartment's free-ish electricity.

Thanks J4bberwock,

I am finalizing a large order for a customer and will have boards and packages in stock as of late next week ready to ship out, shipping takes 4-5 business days anywhere in North America.  I will be drop-shipping PSU's for orders to the US to save on shipping and any potential customs issues from now on.  For us Canucks, I will have many PSU's in stock in about a month, but can still supply boards/cables in the meantime.

I can also take large orders still, as I have a reasonable stock of all the components still.

Sweet, do you have a page with the price and available stuff that you have or will have? I'm interested in 16/18Pins long cable for S5/S7 and mayyybe PSU if they have same clean power and quiet as EVGA G2/GS's.

took my splice apart and hooked a multimeter up. im getting 3.65v on my green wire.im guessing im not getting the full power here and is whats causing my issue

Hmm i'm getting 3v at idle and 0v/0a when on. I'm not sure its supposed to carry energy. If i connect green + a different ground i get 12.85v though. I'm not sure the green wire is supposed to feed power? You just need it on so the big rail will power on the PCI-e's.

Afaik its just the On Switch. You should check the voltage at the PCI-e, not the on switch.

No need for S3 controller without the blades.

Either for working S5 blade version, but need to come with its one connector to the controller. Since i have one spare controller for both.

Yes, if people prefer shipping all the way back to China, they are welcome to. I'm in Canada so this is a better deal for anyone in NA.

Yes that is why i'm picking up dead blades.

Only interested in a couples of S16 long and only as part of a deal. The previous offer from you that ended up 10$ per cable is a no go.

So, You dream is, that someone sell to you full working S3 for 0.2 BTC ( only )
Another dream , that someone sell to you not working S5 blades for 10 USD, instead shipped them to user sidehack  and get free  back miner with hashrate  approximately one eighth of an S5, with efficiency approximately 0.28W/GH. By paying only postage fee.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1203190.0

I sell my self-soldered 2x S5 18 pin long cables for 0.1 BTC and free shipping inside EU. Sold.
For 2 cables it  is 64 soldering points,  and making will take longer than an hour. So I think it was a fair price.

I  offer you 3 x 16 pin long cables with free shipping to Canada for  0.1 BTC

Yes, i been buying S4s and S5's at under 0.15$/GH, its fair to buy S3's at 0.12$/GH~. Can get it from retail here for 100$, your price from EU are just crazy, probably because of vat.

And no thanks, i'd buy a bulk of 100-250 cables for 90$-175$ long before i pay a insane 13$ per cables. I'm guessing the bulk sellers from Asia are using machined cables. Either that or they have a 5000 workers sweatshop making them to be able to sell them at 70cents + shipping each.

Hence i can't accept your offer, again. Apologies.

Am using quickbit with Multibit HD to do interac to bitcoin.

Did a <0.25B transaction yesterday from quickbt.com that took about one minute to convert to come through.

Today I did a 0.25B transaction (apparently the max) that, after three + hours, is still "receiving."

Is this normal for interac transactions?  I thought they were supposed to be fairly speedy.

Many quick BTC purchase services are prone to having transaction manually approved or the wallet manually refilled. If you want reliable BTC purchase at little fee, you're going to have to deal with a reliable exchange.

I never heard of quickbt before, the only reliable quick BTC purchase service i used was Circle and i don't use it anymore because of the fees.
2679  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S7 controller has nine 18- pin jacks So what can we do with it? on: October 17, 2015, 10:41:34 PM
Not 100% sure if it's the same cable on Alibaba. Usually there is a minimum order quantity and length is customizable for as low as $.25.
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ul-listed-28awg-18-pin-1_1961042307.html?spm=a2700.7724838.30.10.MKLnMJ

It just take me to a login screen, and i can't find them on ebay using that name. If someone buy a batch, let me know i'd be interested. Even easier if you buy it to Canada. I don't know alibaba but if they can sell a batch and ship it to my address, maybe a 3rd party that know Alibaba could do the deal. Then it'd be easier to ship them out to whoeever need them.

But i'm guessing this is probably what Jabberwock is doing anyways so we can probably wait until he has a batch for sale.

I'm dealing directly with a connector and cables manufacturer who is making me those custom cables for the S5/S7.
I'm buying them with larger batches of my other supplies from him to save a bit on shipping.
As I said I'm not looking to make a profit on them, I'm considering it as a group buy.

Thats good, i'm still waiting to hear back from you. Please let me know when you get the long S5/S7 18 pins long cables. I'd also pick up a couple of 16pin long cables if those are available wherever.

he says ^^^^ that he has 180 of those in stock already.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1173573.msg12708774#msg12708774

shipping for multiple is expensive, though, maybe we better off if someone will get 50-100 in US, then we can get from that person. I am good for 4-6.

Last message he sent me was that he was out of stock, he has not replied to the thread saying they were on stock since then. But i saw he has a NA reseller, maybe he could send a Batch to him so we can get the cables for cheap.

Willing to buy;

Working S3 Controller + 2x Working S3 Blades including all connection cables. Basically a S3 without the heatsinks + husk/frame. = 0.2BTC Shipped per working set
(Willing to buy the whole thing if it does not make a big difference on shipping, in the case where you would rather not disassemble)

Working S5 Blade + Support bracket (black metal thing you bolt controller and heatsink into) = 0.4BTC Shipped

May also be interested in picking up dead S5 blade in acceptable condition. 10$/per.

Also interested in picking up 18 but also 16 pins long cables for S5's.

How many 16 pin S5 cables you need ?  I have a few for sale.
I sell S3 controller for 0.15 BTC with 2 x S3 cables.

Do you know, that Bitmain paid 15$/per dead blade , If you bought from them new S5 blade and sent them old blade.

Do you know, how much Bitmain asks from one  new S5 chip?

If you want to know , how mach is worth S5 "dead" blade, please read this topic
