27521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what are they going to do when the bitcoin chain becomes prohibitively large? on: February 09, 2014, 02:26:21 AM
Buy 8TB external HDD for Bitcoin data directory and be prepared for next 6 or 7 years of blockchain growth! Or buy the second-hand 8TB drive 5 years from now for couple of dollars.

dont be silly with your bad maths.

each block =1mb so 6 blocks a hour, 24 hours a day = 144mb a day
365 days a year = 52,560mb (52gb)

thats 52GB per year, so lets multiply that by 10 years... oh look half a terrabyte not 8.. but 16 times less.

to add another point. 10 years ago people complained that a game using 1GB was epic. now COD and crises use more then 15GB. so imagine in 10 years time.

hard drive capacity use to be 100gb max ten years ago, now you can buy a 2TB HD for under £$100.

imagine what will be the norm in 10 years.

27522  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banned in Russia on: February 08, 2014, 10:19:20 PM
Something I've been curious about since I read this earlier. Wrt the statement in red - how is it possible then to have обмен валюта or whatever it's called (excuse my Russian) on every street corner swapping rubles for dollars or euros?

thank you for understanding my point.

alot of media is interpreting that chapter 6 article 27 of the finance law states that the only currency allowed to be handled by anyone is the Ruble.

the fact is that article of law tells people the official legal tender is the Ruble.

if any other currency was banned then the bureau de change would not exist in russia, and everyone would have to exchange out of russia.

atleast there are some smart people that do research and look between the lines
27523  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banned in Russia on: February 08, 2014, 10:14:00 PM
This is article from coindesk -http://www.coindesk.com/btce-pulls-support-ruble-russia-bans-bitcoin/- states clearly that Russia has banned cryptos in the country.

“The anonymous payment systems and crypto-currencies, including bitcoin – which is the most popular of them – are monetary surrogates. As such, their use by private citizens or legal entities is not allowed."

Anyone has the original source in Russian?

can people stop spreading FUD and please stop using amateur sources that are not backed by proof!!!

BTC-E has not removed Ruble support. so stop sniffing the glue and please go to BTC-E and check out the BTC/RUR, LTC/RUR, and USD/RUR tabs. grrrrr i hate misinterpretations, chinese whispers, and lack of researching the news..

seriously guys before posting on this forum, when you read a news article atleast research it!
27524  Other / Off-topic / Re: I'm glad BTC is crashing on: February 07, 2014, 01:34:50 PM

isnt the whole point of AIDS, to be spread? but do we want to do this, no as it is not good for society.
bitcoin is not just about spreading it around, its about giving people the informed choice and allowing merchants to choose what is best by informing them of all the information.

i feel there has been too much spreading bitcoin ignorantly, which leads the ill informed to get involved with something that they dont understand enough to utilise fully. hense they panic at the smallest piece of propaganda and run like hell.

You are comparing BTC to AIDS? How can you even compare those two things, while we are spreading things that are in now way associated to BTC lets spread love also, Ebola, Dengue fever....  If its not good why are you using it then, well considering you are a part of society?
Merchants? Sorry but what? Now it is practically impossible to make BTCs using miners ( you can but it will take way too long ), so you can mine LTC and other more profitable coins and its on a person who needs them to buy them for cash or exchange for other currency ( BTC for example ).

People who enter this "game" by reading on forums, or they are told by a friend to invest... don't have large amounts so they can't effect price like " big players " that have few millions in BTC, and people who have that much are not stupid to lose 20-30% by selling and running like scary little rabbits...

i did write a couple paragraphs of waffle but decided to keep it short.

for me bitcoins is like sex, alot of fun, involves more then one person to be fully useful and although governments like to talk about the negatives, the risks and like to wrap laws around different parts of the activity. it is something everyone should try. but i do find that informing other people of the activity should be done with explaining the risks, looking at the persons own experiences and advising them of the right route to take to gain the most out of the experience.
where as i see so many people just shout out to ignore the risks, and jump in unprotected. thinking that people somehow automatically know when to pull out at the right time without causing harm.

and as for you thinking this is just a game and that mining/buying bitcoins is the only way... you are part of the issue i speak of.. no grasp of the full picture or all of the information.
27525  Other / Off-topic / Re: I'm glad BTC is crashing on: February 07, 2014, 12:24:18 PM
i agree with OP.
i have read too many threads, private messages and other notes from people with no clue about bitcoin, and no intention to learn the ethos of bitcoin, they just want to stay as a FIAT sheep and make a quick buck in the Bitcoin field before going back to graze in the FIAT field again. hopefully these kind of people have lost their nerve and moved back to gold speculating.

lets now bring in the true bitcoin enthusiasts that want to expand bitcoin to then help expand their pockets. instead of expanding their pockets by sucking life out of bitcoin.

most retarded thing I read in a while, congrats OP.

isn't the whole point of bitcoin to spread it?

27526  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WHY does the media have so much control over Bitcoin price? on: February 07, 2014, 07:14:59 AM
i laugh at media stories. and their over dramatisation of the facts

EG "apple declares war on bitcoin"

........... no apple did not make a statement that they would track and kill any bitcoin users. they simply took it off of their website. this is not war, this is prohibition..
27527  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WHY does the media have so much control over Bitcoin price? on: February 07, 2014, 07:04:13 AM
short answer to the first post

because 99% of people are sheep and at the slightest soundwave to shock them, they want to run. i personally dont eat grass and run at the slightest soundwave to shock me. and those that do panic over such things really need to look at themselves and work out, if they are this sheepish and fearful, is this high risk high reward new form of payment something they should really be investing in? as it seems their nerves can't handle it.

it seems those that live in fear should not be walking in a field of landmines. i personally love walking in fields of landmines. but thats because i know the true signs to look out for and ignore the false ones made to trick you into changing your direction.

and for those that are of a nervous disposition that still feel that bitcoin is for them. DO NOT invest such an amount to affect your nerves.

EG do not put your whole salary each week into bitcoin. but if you usually waste $90 a week on alcohol, fast food (items that end up down your toilet within 6-9 hours after purchasing) then waste that amount, and that amount only on bitcoin.

that way you will believe it to be your "disposable" income and not your living expense, and as such will not panic as much at the slightest bit of news.
27528  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Please Help! Bitpay took Payment on: February 07, 2014, 06:42:56 AM
agreed with gizmo, look at your transaction and link them to the blockchain.info of that trasnaction to show them that the funds have indeed been transfered.

lets just hope that you did not manually type in the address and made a spelling mistake, as you then might aswell of paid a frog in a pond in Madagascar instead of paying bitpay.
27529  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banned in Russia on: February 07, 2014, 06:18:39 AM
cryptog1, seems you have atleast glanced beyond the media and found the meeting notes, which is good to see.

article 27 means ruble is the official currency of central banks (FIAT/legal tender), bitcoin wont replace it.

bitcoin does not want to be a replacement of FIAT/legal tender, it wants to work along side legal tender. just like russia allows euro's to be exchanged, airmiles, travelers cheques, even facebook credits..

the statement
Quote
In accordance with Art. 27 of the Federal Law "On the Central Bank of the Russian Federation", "the official currency (currency) of the Russian Federation is the ruble. Introduction on the territory of Russia and other monetary units issue money substitutes is prohibited. " Certain distribution received anonymous payment systems and kriptovalyuty, including the most famous of them - Bitcoin are money substitutes and can not be used by individuals and legal entities.

the statement in red is the official and legal stance of russia.. EG ruble wont be substituted by bitcoin.

the statement in green is someone elses hypothesis to the meaning of the law. but infact is not law itself. it is just a statement.

the meeting was not a law making activity, it was a discussion between bankers, Russian FSB and the Russian Interior Ministry to discuss the status of bitcoin. no law has changed regarding bitcoin as of yet. but these meetings are discussion meetings which may lead to law changes in the future.

again bitcoin is not replacing the ruble, much like air miles, facebook credits, zynga coins are not replacing the ruble. as such bitcoin is not illegal.

all this meeting proves is that bitcoin seems negatively received by the russian authorities and law changes may happen. but this meeting has not changed a thing! infact the chapter 6 article 27 has not changed since 2002..

enjoy your research

not sure if it has been posted before:

http://noarmycanstopanidea.com/bitcoin-banned-in-russia/

if yes please mod delete the thread.

wondering how this is behind the current price drop or mtGox?

stop spreading fud that has lost its true meaning due to unintelliagent people reading the original source wrongly and then spreading the information in chinese whispers to make the facts less and less true with each passing.

the truth is that russia warn that bitcoin COULD be used for money laundering, and as such. people trading anonymously with each other COULD be trading with illegal counterparties, as such it COULD lead some people into being linked to a crime.

its a warning, not a ban.

please try looking for the information source and research before posting these FUD articles.

27531  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The US Postal Service Should Accept Bitcoins on: February 06, 2014, 11:38:10 PM
USPS should accept bitcoins. USPS won't accept bitcoins. US government is not interested in USPS accepting bitcoins.

i brought this out of necro because some users wishes, may soon be granted

27532  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Shall we make a bitcoin bank? on: February 06, 2014, 05:04:00 PM
building a bitcoin bank is called centralisation.

if you want centralisation and where someone else holds funds securely, stick with FIAT!

if you meant the idea of a bitcoin friendly method to convert FIAT into bitcoin and vice versa. again there is no need for one organisation to perform this task. infact the best version of conversion is out there already. its called localbitcoins.

and if none of this makes sense and you still think that a bank is a useful idea, then you truly have ignored the whole bitcoin concept. you also ignored the laws about what is required to build a bank(please research laws and regulations), to realise that a bank is not what you need. and as such if you did try such an endeaver your reputation is nil, and i wouldnt trust you with my funds.. sorry.
27533  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: amir taaki on bbc :( on: February 06, 2014, 04:52:07 PM

I understand he is passionate. We all are. But, Amir accepts to go on a national TV station, which has millions of viewers, and then just talks a load of incoherent non-sense for 5 minutes. That's not going to persuade viewers at home to start buying or even researching bitcoin.

Surely there are more professional and knowledgble people in the UK to talk about bitcoin?

I listened to the video, but unfortunately it was too painful too watch. Shame.
i hate putting on a tin foil hat (as some may think this message becomes) but
i watched a interview amir done last year, and i face palmed that interview as much as this one. at the time i then sent the BBC a list of willing and more professional speakers that could actually talk about bitcoin in a useful way. but it appears they are only interested in the eccentric..

as for other professional speakers, max keiser although he is just as eccentric, he does try to keep the words he uses in a logical and easy to understand way. yet the BBC when interviewing max did not given him much time to talk about bitcoin and maybe only enough time to say 2 words to attempt to counter bitcoin criticism.

(now for the tin foil hat moment)
all of this proves that the BBC is owned by the rich banks and government and they have to keep their interests, above public knowledge.

and a personal message to amir.
seriously dude your on TV where the nation is watching. atleast comb your hair and wear a shirt with a collar. realise your being viewed by millions and that the visual perception is just as important as the words you say. please realise that the BBC is not your squat where you can wear what you like because only a select few will see you.
27534  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shrem's kidnapping reveals slavish mindset of "public Bitcoin figures" on: February 06, 2014, 02:26:02 PM
Shrem is giving BTC a bad name, buying drugs off the Silk Road, laundering money and knowingly letting unlawful things slide by his attention!

This is bad publicity for BTCitcoins network, but they are just trying to use Shrem as a international example for others involving themselves in illegal festivities within the US

bitcoin was had the silk road propaganda for years. so really it is not that damaging, it is just trying to keep the propaganda machine fuelled to the same level.

i do agree they are using shrem as a President so show other exchanges that the US government does not take money laudering lightly. but the failure in this scheme of theirs, if the first post of this thread is to be believed (concerning the alleged broken laws):

Quote
and one count of wilfully failing to file a suspicious activity report.

only licenced money transmitters are required to file SAR reports by law.. which must mean he had a licence, to have failed his duties under the licence.. which counter-acts this alleged crime:

Quote
one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business,

.... i am now intrigued and might start looking deeper into the facts of this, as something does not look right
27535  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Would you? on: February 06, 2014, 08:53:23 AM
what a lazy assed attempt of making a website. just look at the recent comments on the right. they could not even be bothered to delete the latin out of the freebie template. seriously anyone swapping FIAT for bitcoins needs a money licence. and if they cant even be bothered to program a website from scratch or pay for a good template which they then dit professionally, then i do not think they should be trusted with peoples credit card details.
27536  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tax on mining due to climate change. on: February 04, 2014, 06:30:39 AM
i laugh at anyone that thinks that bitcoins will ruin the environment.

take las vegas for instance. each light bulb to be as dazzling as they are would be atleast 100watts. now count up the millions of light bulbs per casino, just for their decorative display outside. then add on the electric for the heating and all the casino game/slot machines. and i havnt even got to the electric usage of the hotel part of las vegas ( air-con, room lighting, TV/entertainment centre)

so lets just put the hotels into numbers. (ignoring decorative casino's and residential houses)
aircon+TV+lighting per hotel room average 1kwatt multiply by 500 rooms = 500kwatt
now thats the equivalent to 1000 ant miners (180thash)

now multiply that by the amount of hotel's (122) on the strip.
so lets average 100 locations of the size mentioned above. which totals 18,000 Thash
you will find that las vegas's hotels alone out powers the electrical cost of bitcoin, and their choice of currency is poker chips

now lets look at new yorks electric bill for all of its buildings on wall street... (leaving you to ponder the electricity wastage of the dollar market)

*note: some hotels have 10 rooms with an adjacent micro-casino, some have well over 1000 rooms so i averaged out to low numbers, las vegas is more electricity wasted then my maths has shown
27537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Charity Admits Its Biggest-Ever Donation Was Likely Stolen Money on: February 04, 2014, 05:56:46 AM

now it appears their after preventing true charitable organisations from wanting to accept bitcoin.
27538  Other / Off-topic / Re: I don't know what else to do. Forgive me for this. Worth a shot. on: February 04, 2014, 05:49:52 AM
a few of us rich investors and donaters do look for good causes. the only problem is that you do not seem to want to help yourself.

you say you earn under $300 a month = $75 a week = 10 hours or less per week.

you moan that you only make this amount yet you cannot be bothered to improve your circumstances

Quote
I wasn't trying to get a job in the begining

you say you were not looking for large donations, but i have to make this entirely clear to you right now:
rent, utility bills, food and transport to work average out as well over $1000 a month. currently you live with your mother, so you do not see the true costs of living on your own. and any small donation of pennies wont help you move out.

i suggest you get a job that is more then 2 hours a day for 5 days a week / or 2 days of 5 hours (whatever your circumstance is). and work more hours. this way for 1. your earning more 2.your not sat in your mothers basement depressing yourself for as much of the day as you currently are.

if you truly want out of your situation you need to do 5 hours a day minimum. even if you have school/college doing an evening job of 5pm to 10pm is possible. plus your not at home for those hours, which would be beneficial to your mental health. also when you do get a place of your own. being home alone can be boring, so working can give you the mental stimulation, social expereince and prevent boredom.

and lastly  if you moan that a job would leave you with no social life, then you personally do not have the true energy and desire to change your circumstances, and as such asking other people to waste their energy on you is hypocritical.

PS. i too was looking to see if there were any job offerings i could give you. but looking at the facts about your so called website design experience. im not now
27539  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The way it will play out on: February 02, 2014, 11:06:45 AM
Hold your bitcoins and wait for exchanges in tax haven countries to open up so you can cash out tax free Smiley  .. Hahah just an idea.

But yeah,  if you make capital gains on bitcoins , be safe and pay your taxes.

Hopefully the idea of 'cashing out' becomes redundant and we 'stay' in bitcoin because the bit-economy is large and diverse enough to allow it!!

As an afterthought.... if I am able to stay in btc indefinitely how will the tax laws for a global means of exchange cope? I cant see any blockchain upgrade that allows a transaction tax.

once the tax offices of the world catch up to reality that bitcoin is not a small thing, i presume they will treat it like a person getting paid with foreign currency.

EG an american being paid in canadian dollars, or euro's for their work
27540  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Ive Been using faucets for weeks and im yet to receive a single Satoshi...Why? on: February 02, 2014, 10:44:35 AM
faucets are suppose to be treated like donations for the poor. basically to get people started.

they are not meant to be treated as a regular income, so i think your problem is that you keep pushing your luck on the same faucets.

secondly, you need to research satoshi dust limit... you will find that most websites offering multiple faucet access, clump all donations into one lump and pay out above the satoshi dust limit of over 5000 satoshis.

if only people were not so greedy to try using faucets as a regular income. then these faucets would give out one time donations of above the satoshi dust limit.

just like mining, the more you try to be greedy and grabbing as much as you can, the harder it gets.
