Atrides' Freebazaar for Monero donation pledge

Unconditional
No one (yet?)

Condition: bounty-style (to be developped)

Our lives are technicolor anecdotes of miracles painted on a grey background of statistical ensembles which are scientifically determined.

I am reminded of Aldous Huxley's "The Doors of Perception." It is important to keep things in perspective.
304  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] rpietila Monero Economics thread on: January 02, 2015, 06:16:34 PM
I would like to ask the people, who posted math- and statistic-based models or proofs which showed as clear outcome or resulted to the thesis, that Monero has a significant, long-term botmining-problem, that is harming the ecosystem und ecology development in for e.g. price.

Are you seeing, general problems, that all CPU-minable or maybe all CryptoNote-based coins share? (no specific Monero design related reasons)

Or you see a problem, that is inherent from Moneros coin setup restrictions (esp. distribution, mining setup, etc.). Meaning, it's a specific problem only Monero has in this strength.

It's not surprising that the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scamdevs, one of whom (it was speculated in the rethink-your-strategy thread) may be a known botnet coder (see: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2500323/cybercrime-hacking/accused-kelihos-botnet-maker-worked-for-two-security-firms.html), would have chosen mining algorithms that favor botnets.

Edit: I have no idea how botnet mining helps or hurts a crypto-currency's ecosystem.

as a forum is not available for many users, here once again:

Dear Monero miners, investors or just fans,

you might heard from decentralizated "OpenBazaar". This is a genial idea, especially would be for Monero, that's able to bring Monero to Real World.

I think we have to deal fast because of our main competitor and also of changing character of cryptoworld. Monero's technical site is strong, but only infrastructure around it will get the sense and increase its price and capitalization many times more.

I suppose, there are enough Monero holders, interested in Monero's growth and in getting profited. Many find the bazaar for Monero a revolution idea, but without more initiative nothing will happen.

That's why I am opening an investment foundation for devepoling of FreeBazaar.

I still looked into "original" Bazaar, some features are not ready yet, but there is the ground here, enough to me so far. I created an account on Github for FreeBazaar and would lead the project if you do not mind

Some words about my specialization. I am a freelancer, late senior engineer of Large internationally-known Company. With more than 10 years experience in web-developing and system administration. Amongst others I have a considerable experience in communication's low level and see OpenBazaar's lacks and disadvantages. I'd use more optimal and userfriendly functions, as well as the other communication protocol with native TOR support etc..

I finished my last project some days ago and now ready to spend to 70% of my work time to FreeBazaar to get it quicker.

This would be the rough FreeBazaar plan:

1. As a first step I estimate to integrate Monero into Bazaar
2. the managing a usable state to real use
3. implementing further unique features

I suggest the first task for 10k XMR might take about a month 50%-work time of me. If there will be more investment, I will succeed to find more time, get to take part another developers and finish earlier. or it get for next steps.

If we will gather a foundation till 6.01.15, I'll post out more detailed plan, the list of investors. we'll organize a closed investment group on google docs and I'll keep the members up-to-date.

If we won't reach the sum, I'll give all funds back at the same day and close this theme.

Please contact me with your suggestions, questions and I wish you happy New Year!

This is the foundation address:

After the transaction please PM me with your name and TX!

Don't you need the XMR devs to figure out multi-sig before integrating XMR into OpenBazaar?

regarding mymonero it would be useful if there was an FAQ explaining the use of mixin and which number to choose.

could somebody explain what mixin count refers to (does 3 mean the use of 3 ring sigs or something) and why 4 is the biggest option (why not 8 for example)? cheers

Highest number is the best. It is safer, but you will pay more fees than when using a lower mixing count. I don't know for sure what it refers to, but I think it's the same as number of repetitions when using coinjoin (transaction will be mixed 3 times when using mixing count 3). I hope someone with more knowledge on this subject could explain it better.

The mixin count refers to the number of other signatures (aside from yours) in the ring-signature that authorizes the transaction. So a mixin of 3 means that there are a total of 4 signatures. This means that someone looking at the monero blockchain has no way of knowing which of the four signers is the true sender.

Running 8-8-6 on OSX 10.9.5 and just downloaded the latest blockchain.bin.  All files were installed to "downloads".  Having issues running bitmonerod from a terminal using blockchain.bin download.  Just keeps trying to synchronize the entire block chain from scratch.  Any advice?  Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about mac, but since it's unixy, I'd guess you should put the blockchain.bin file into the .bitmonero folder, which would be a hidden folder in your home directory, at least that's where your default data directory is on linux.

Yes, put it in .bitmonerod in your home directory.

Bitcoin under assault in Estonia

Same guys you keep seeing creeping around your castle?

Stay safe, rpietila and castle crew.

I hope Estonian decision-makers see this. I am very troubled by the seemingly unfounded, unsensical and summary treatment of Otto. If the intention is to give the impression that the rule-of-law does not hold in Estonia, it has been given. I am awaiting high-level contact to ensure that there remains a possibility to continue building the Malla Bitcoin Center. If not, I am humbled that this development was regarded as such a big threat that the 2-decade old tradition of liberty in the country needed to be violated because of it.

Don't take it too seriously, though (everyone) Smiley We play a moment and then we die. And bad guys go to hell. The choice is yours.

After 19 months of reading this forum, for me this is the best quote so far! The essence of life Smiley

Another of the king's chief men, approving of his wise words and exhortations, added thereafter: "The present life of man upon earth, O king, seems to me, in comparison with that time which is unknown to us, like to the swift flight of a sparrow through the house wherein you sit at supper in winter, with your ealdormen and thegns, while the fire blazes in the midst, and the hall is warmed, but the wintry storms of rain or snow are raging abroad. The sparrow, flying in at one door and immediately out at another, whilst he is within, is safe from the wintry tempest; but after a short space of fair weather, he immediately vanishes out of your sight, passing from winter into winter again. So this life of man appears for a little while, but of what is to follow or what went before we know nothing at all. If, therefore, this new doctrine tells us something more certain, it seems justly to deserve to be followed." The other elders and king's counsellors, by Divine prompting, spoke to the same effect.

hey guys check this out. wow. no more having to copy and paste huge addresses! cool new feature in the 0.8.8.5, great work devs  Cheesy

go to https://openalias.org/ to learn how to make your own alias!

That is cool! How did you get your the saddam.moneroaddress.org alias you reference in your sig? Did you have to register the domain name moneroaddress.org yourself? Does this mean that to get our own openalias to use with Monero, we have to find domain name registrars that allow anonymous registration?

Minor bug in simplewallet v0.8.8.5-unknown:

After updated to 0.8.8.5, when I initially opened an old non-deterministic wallet, simplewallet detected that it was a deprecated version of the wallet and then produced a 25-word seed. I assumed that being given a new seed implied that my non-deterministic wallet had been upgraded to a deterministic wallet. But when I entered the "seed" command, I received the message: "Error: The wallet is non-deterministic. Cannot display seed." So my wallet remains in its original non-deterministic format.

Also when I ran simplewallet with the --restore-deterministic-wallet flag, and entered those 25 words at the "Specify electrum seed:" prompt, I received the message "Error: electrum-style wordlist failed verification." I exited and re-opened my non-deterministic wallet, this time without any flag, using my password. The funds are still there and I was not presented with the erroneous 25 word seed this time.

Summary: The new version of simplewallet erroneously presented me with a 25-word seed the first time (but not the second time) I used it to open a non-deterministic wallet.

Edit: It seems safe to just ignore the seed. The new version of simplewallet seems to work fine with a more recent deterministic wallet.

I've got a problem trying to run 0.8.8.5 on OSX (10.10.1)...

Code:
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libevent-2.0.5.dylib

I've tried updating libevent but the most recent version I can find is 2.0.21 - any ideas?

EDIT:
I tried brew unlink libevent && brew link libevent. Now I get a completely different error when I try to launch bitmonerod.

Code:
Illegal instruction: 4

I can't help but I did get mine working on OSX 10.10.1 using Homebrew. I ran into a bit more trouble than usual. Did you run brew doctor? It advised me to link libevent and zeromq. I also had to brew install makedepend. During the build process I was seeing errors from curl, about certificate problems. But it seems to be working now.

openalias is working with simplewallet.

I must have missed that Missive  Wink

How do I create an alias for my XMR address?
317  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] Monero Community FAQ on: December 07, 2014, 01:33:28 AM
Q: What is openalias? How does it work?
A: openalias is Monero's aliasing system. It is meant to make it simpler to send moneroj to an address, by applying a label (itself using DNS) to an address. Using DNS prevents landgrabing (of course, landgrabing DNS itself is still an issue).
For instance, if you want to send moneroj to support the development of Monero, you can either send to the dev fund address
Code:
46BeWrHpwXmHDpDEUmZBWZfoQpdc6HaERCNmx1pEYL2rAcuwufPN9rXHHtyUA4QVy66qeFQkn6sfK8aHYjA3jk3o1Bv16em
or the much simpler to memorise alias:
Code:
donate.monero.cc
Of course, before sending to an alias, the said alias must have been created - see the openalias website for instructions.

Does openalias already work in simplewallet? Or is this alias system to be introduced in the upcoming GUI client?

simplewallet seems to want to put its log file in the same place as the executable. If you have stored the executable in a non-writable location, you won''t get a log file at all. Work around it to link or put the executable in a writable directory/folder.

Thanks for investigating--I really appreciate it.
