3041  Other / Meta / Re: Suchmoon's thread where he demonstrates the clear net gain of retaining tagging. on: February 18, 2020, 09:04:27 AM
The rate of new posts is the perfect means of judging the success or decline of a forum.
No, it's a useless metric for the purpose. What if we suddenly get millions of new posts a day... and 90% of those new posts being made are all in Altcoin Bounty threads or thread bumping ICO annoucement threads? Does that suddenly make Bitcointalk a success simply because the post count is going to the moon? Or does it just make it a dumping ground for every shitcoin/shittoken ever devised and all the bounty hunters trying to make $2 by spamming all over the boards? Huh

Fairly sure the SNR is a lot better since:

1. The bottom fell out of the altcoin ICO market
2. A large portion of plagiarists/spammers/spinbots got banned

As DooMAD said... Quality over Quantity.
3042  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues on: February 18, 2020, 08:45:51 AM
Do not do any firmware update or anything like that with my nano s since im outside the US.  Once I go back to the US, install the Recovery Check app... then type in my 24 word seed... to see if it confirms right?  It ask to type all 24 words right?  And if its correct, it would say correct?  If not, then incorrect right?
https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007223753-Recovery-Check

Quote
Again, my worry here initially wasn't the firmware 1.6 issue with the reset... it had to do with my ledger nano s screen being much dimmer when i didn't connect it to my laptop for a few months.  Like the letters use to be much more darker and now its much more lighter.
If you're concerned the hardware might be faulty... log a ticket with Ledger Support and see what they say. No one here is a Ledger technician as far as I'm aware! Tongue If you're within the warranty period, you might be able to get a replacement. At the very least they should be able to confirm whether or not the hardware is faulty or failing and will need to be replaced.
3043  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Splitting Drives for Core and Armory on: February 18, 2020, 08:42:25 AM
Without your logs it will be a bit difficult to troubleshoot.
i can post log files, but am uncertain how to do that?
Log Files will be in your %AppData%/Armory directory (something like C:\Users\YOURPCUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Armory) NOTE: Click here if you can't see the "AppData" directory

You will find "armorylog.txt" and "dbLog.txt"

Open them with Notepad and Copy/paste the contents of those files to https://pastebin.com/ and click the "Create New Paste" button... then copy/paste the unique URL that pastebin generates into a post here. If you get a warning that the paste is too big, just copy the bottom half of each file.

Also, it would be useful if you create separate "pastes" for each logfile Wink
3044  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: multibit hd on: February 18, 2020, 03:00:49 AM
Yeah, your right but check the link it also provides the guide to export keys from multibit HD.
It was posted on the multibit blog from here https://multibit.org/blog/2017/07/26/multibit-shutdown.html
That mbexport tool you linked to does not export keys from MultibitHD wallets... it only exports the seed mnemonic...
For Multibit HD, it will look like:

MultibitHD wallet opened
Enter your passphrase: ***

measure swim globe radio reunion awful reflect tail produce treat cluster spot

Interestingly... if I create a normal MBHD wallet using a "normal" 12 word seed:
best achieve monster virus humor soon spin result knock actress churn design

And then run the extract tool on that wallet, as expected, the tool returns the same 12 word seed:
Quote
MultibitHD wallet opened
Enter your passphrase: **********

best achieve monster virus humor soon spin result knock actress churn design

However, then I restored the wallet as a "BETA 7" (aka 'not BIP32 compliant') version using the instructions here, (I used the same 12 word seed mnemonic of "best achieve monster virus humor soon spin result knock actress churn design")... this time the tool extracts the seed from the wallet file as:
Quote
MultibitHD wallet opened
Enter your passphrase: **********

caught wall relief benefit practice fashion door glare mixed umbrella metal girl lyrics pond ginger twice purity penalty tunnel cross sorry fatigue suspect situate minimum torch abstract leopard cactus alone useless benefit vapor erase swim rice motor perfect trouble citizen garment winter stumble advance afford cherry oxygen rifle
Shocked Shocked Shocked

I tried putting that super long (48 words!) seed mnemonic into Electrum (as BIP39 and using path m/0') and even though it said "checksum failed", it actually created the same addresses as the BETA 7 wallet! I double checked with Ian Coleman's tool (BIP32 tab + custom derivation path - "Multibit HD") and it generates the same addresses on that as well:

Perhaps this might be a solution to access the private keys and coins? Huh
3045  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: February 17, 2020, 10:15:02 PM
Are you gambling or you are talking about the EPL pool prediction?
It was a gambling prediction. I was gambling on the draw to up my parlay return... and it obviously didn't work! Undecided

I was doing OK this round too... as the other results went as predicted and I'm sure City will beat West Ham tomorrow, not that it really matters for me now, as my parlay is broken Sad
3046  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: February 17, 2020, 09:43:46 PM
Chelsea have had two goals ruled out by VAR... so there goes my draw prediction... looks like ManU are going to take this one 0-2. Undecided
3047  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Import Dumpfiles on: February 17, 2020, 09:25:42 PM
In this order:

Create a new "Virgin" bitcoin instance.
Disable Pruning
Run a full update.
Try a dumpwallet import.

Is this recommended procedure.?
I would not say it was "recommended"... obviously using a 'proper' wallet.dat backup file is the recommended way to restore a wallet. But yes, to "import" a dumpfile, then that would be the procedure to use, assuming you had a pruned instance, as pruning is disabled by default.

Quote
I wonder  what the real purpose for creating a dumpfile is. It clears the wallet so what can you use a dumpfile  for (except import).
A "dumpfile" does NOT clear the wallet. All it does is export your private keys in clear text. It does NOT remove private keys from your wallet dat, so your original wallet.dat file will remain unchanged.
Code:
dumpwallet "filename"

Dumps all wallet keys in a human-readable format to a server-side file. This does not allow overwriting existing files.

The main purpose of these dumpfiles is generally if you need to bulk export private keys for some reason (moving to different wallet for instance)... for exporting specific single keys you can just use dumpprivkey:
Code:
dumpprivkey "address"

Reveals the private key corresponding to 'address'.
Then the importprivkey can be used with this output

Quote
it would be nice to have a possibility to recreate a wallet.
The 'normal' workflow for recreating wallets is to restore from a backup of the wallet.dat file itself... not using "dumpfiles".
3048  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory and Windows 10 and port 9001 on: February 17, 2020, 07:50:09 PM
Actually... I take it back... my setup seems to be picking "random" ports:

Code: (dbLog.txt)
-INFO  - 15:00:52.031: (e:\users\goat\code\armory3\cppforswig\bdm_server.h:263) Listening on port 57177

...
-INFO  - 19:59:14.109: (e:\users\goat\code\armory3\cppforswig\bdm_server.h:263) Listening on port 52336
...
-INFO  - 11:24:47.109: (e:\users\goat\code\armory3\cppforswig\bdm_server.h:263) Listening on port 54843
...
-INFO  - 08:34:07.125: (e:\users\goat\code\armory3\cppforswig\bdm_server.h:263) Listening on port 52128
etc... as you can see, the latest run is listening on port 52128

I don't have armoryqt.conf or armorydb.conf. I've simply set the settings for custom Block directory in the GUI.

The output I see is armorylog.txt is:
Code:

Weird that the others don't. Possibly a weird whitespace issue where it is being included when calculating the signature, but it is being removed from the message display? Huh
3050  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can't connect electrum to my own electrumx server on: February 17, 2020, 09:04:56 AM
It seems that Electrum has some "cert caching" issues... judging by a number of closed issues on the ElectrumX GitHub Issues register

Try shutting down Electrum, then deleting the certs in the .electrum/certs directory and then restarting Electrum and see if it works with the "fancy dancy" cert loaded in ElectrumX Wink

Failing that, try logging an issue on that ElectrumX github and see if the dev has any ideas.
3051  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions re: Bitcoin Core Wallet on: February 17, 2020, 08:41:37 AM
Firstly, "Bitcoin Technical Support" is probably the better board to move this thread to. It is for "Questions regarding issues with Bitcoin Core, nodes, the Bitcoin network, transactions, and addresses" Wink

As for your other questions:
Questions:
1. If I keep the wallets offline, can I just drag them onto a USB stick, and then, when I need them, drag them back to their initial folder?
Are you proposing deleting the wallet file(s) from your PC after you have finished using it each time and just maintaining the backups on the USB? Huh

If so, every time you wanted to "use" your wallet (to get a receive address or send some bitcoins) you would need to do the following:

Step 1. Shut down Bitcoin Core
Step 2. Copy wallet file(s) from USB to Bitcoin Core "data directory"
Step 3. Restart Bitcoin Core (using the -wallet commandline argument to specify the wallet file(s) you want to use)
Step 4. Conduct transactions etc
Step 5. Shutdown Bitcoin Core
Step 6. Copy the wallet file(s) from Bitcoin Core "data directory" back to USB
Step 7. Delete wallet file(s) from "data directory"
Step 8. Restart Bitcoin Core

You need to shut down Bitcoin Core before copying/deleting the wallet files to prevent wallet file corruption. Theoretically, you could use the "File -> Backup Wallets" command in Bitcoin Core to take care of Step 6 before you shut down Bitcoin Core, but you would still need to shutdown Bitcoin Core to be able to delete the wallet files from the PC anyway.

Is there any particular reason why you don't want the wallet files stored on the PC and want to move them back and forth from the USB? Huh It's a lot of hassle... and simply leaving the (encrypted) wallet files on the PC and having backup copies of the .dat files on the USB would be considered the "normal" workflow.

2. Do I need to back-up the two wallets into separate files? (Eg. wallet1.dat and wallet2.dat).
Yes

3. Or there a way to back up all of my Bitcoin Core wallets in one file?
No

4. Will a wallet backup file contain all relevant information about my private keys in that wallet?
Yes

Or do I need to also write out the private key information on paper?
No
3052  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory and Windows 10 and port 9001 on: February 17, 2020, 07:56:03 AM
This is telling you there's a zombie instance of ArmoryDB, you need to shut that down.
Last listened error throw then i not used custom port for db, its mean that i cant use port 9001.
He is saying that this is a "stuck" version of ArmoryDB that is already running (hidden in the background) and that stuck version is blocking port 9001. You need to kill all ArmoryDB process that are showing in Task Manager... or simply just shut everything down (close Armory and Bitcoin Core) and then restart your computer (that will definitely kill the zombie!)

Once you have restarted, simply start Bitcoin Core, wait until it is fully synced, then try opening Armory WITHOUT using custom ports!

For the record, Armory runs fine on Windows 10 with default port (9001)... that's what I'm doing right now! Wink
3053  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Bitcoin Armory Confusion on: February 17, 2020, 07:51:27 AM
Most likely there was a "stuck" or "ghost" armory process (usually armoryDB) that wasn't being killed when you closed the Armory GUI down.

Best thing is to try and shut everything down, then restart your computer and try starting Bitcoin Core (let it fully sync) and then start Armory. That should enable it to work properly. If it doesn't, you'd need to post up your log files from Armory. (Don't try and copy/paste the contents of your Armory log files directly here... they'll be too big, so use https://pastebin.com/)

Also, just checking that you are using Armory version 0.96.5 from here: https://btcarmory.com/ (DO NOT use bitcoinarmory.com!)
and Bitcoin Core 0.19.0.1? Huh
3054  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: i sent bitcoin to my wallet, and the funds have never shown! on: February 17, 2020, 07:43:34 AM
I have my wallet on laptop, which is electrum. been years i use the same one, and i sent -0.07961441 to my wallet (mycelium) which is on my iphone11.
It's probably never going to show in Mycelium on your iPhone:

Version History
1.11 Jan 11, 2017
Added German localization

Mycelium stopped updating the iOS version over 3 years ago... Roll Eyes

i then downloaded myceliun on adroid and put my 12 words.  once it sync, it dont show the -0.07961441 that i sent. and whats scary is that it dont show the past history either... its just showing stuff from 2017.
The fact that it is showing info from 2017 is a good start. At least it appears that it's restored the wallet from your iPhone.

Have you tried running the "ismine()" command again in Electrum after you ran the "change_gap_limit" command? Huh

Code:
ismine("1GeZ8Vg5UZKeAVPAekbCxzKGk67QUXLHQv")

Does this return "true" or "false"? Huh
3055  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 17, 2020, 07:28:44 AM
A pretty-looking brick just won't cut it if it's harder to use than it needs to be
Maybe keep it as a "pretty-looking decoy brick"... Keep(Key)™ it on your desk, so if someone breaks in they'll find the KeepKey and assume they've hit the jackpot and miss your cunningly hidden Casascius coins and Ledger Wink Tongue
3056  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Fake Security Vulnerability: Ledger Nano X and Ledger Nano S? on: February 17, 2020, 07:20:27 AM
It's an old warning about an old phishing email that some users received. It attempted to get the user to download something and I believe input their 24 word seed mnemonic.

I'm not actually aware of anyone who fell for this phishing attempt (at least I didn't see anyone posting about having used the "Ledger SE Checker" and then losing all their coins Tongue)
3057  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X vs. Nano S on: February 17, 2020, 07:16:24 AM
Horses for courses, jerry... ask 10 different people the "best" way to utilise hardware wallets like the Nano S and Nano X and you'll probably get 11 different answers.

Everyone is different, has different requirements and uses their hardware wallets in different ways. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and figure out what exactly you want/need and then investigate the solutions that best fit your requirements. Roll Eyes
3058  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: importing seed to another wallet on: February 17, 2020, 07:11:26 AM
When creating a new wallet I have the seed of 12 words generated.

I know that I can import them for the same wallet but can I do that as well with another wallet?
What wallet did you create the 12 word seed mnemonic in? Huh

Answering that question will enable everyone to advise:
- what type of seed mnemonic it is
- what wallet(s) it is compatible with (if any)
3059  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: multibit hd on: February 17, 2020, 06:20:37 AM
If he does have the MultibitHD wallet files available... I had a script that could extract the addresses/keys for UNSPENT UTXOs from MultibitHD wallets: https://github.com/HardCorePawn/multibit_recovery

It does require Python 2.7 and a couple of libraries installed... and of course, being comfortable downloading/installing/running Python command line scripts Tongue

That's a nasty bug tho (the Beta 7 non-BIP32 compliant one! Shocked)...
3060  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to view derivation path in Bitcoin Core on: February 17, 2020, 06:07:18 AM
It seems totally broken (and most likely a scam)... I just tried signing up for a "wallet"... they gave me 18 words... VIA EMAIL!!?! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked and I used the password "abc123".

When I try to "restore" this wallet, I copy/paste the 18 words from the email, use "abc123" as the password and I get "The password you entered was not valid." Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

So many warning signs on this site... Undecided
