3161  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 108 on: January 09, 2014, 06:24:18 AM
The forum sells ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page. About 25% of ad income goes to the forum moderators as thanks for all of their work. (There are many moderators, so each moderator gets only a small amount -- moderators should be seen as volunteers, not employees.) The rest is stored in the forum's treasury (verifiably), where it sits until the forum needs it.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Seven of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts at least 7 days starting from when I put it up. (However, if you look at the ad history you'll see that ads frequently get 1-2 extra days, but this is random and definitely not guaranteed.)

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Ad blocking

Hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression counts for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all seven slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 7 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 7 slots. If the two highest bids are 7 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 6 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.05.
- The bidding starts at 0.50.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

3163  Other / Meta / Re: About releases of IP addresses and other info on: January 08, 2014, 04:23:32 AM
Current policy is to release IPs only in response to a court order or a reasonable police request. (I don't guarantee that I won't release IPs in other cases, though.)
3164  Economy / Goods / Re: Who runs this site? Would you like to make Bitcointalk.org Merch? on: January 07, 2014, 08:07:02 AM
Feel free. No need to pay the forum anything.
3165  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hashfast Scam Timeline (Do not give hashfast your money) on: January 06, 2014, 06:22:27 AM
Here are the deleted posts of HashFast-related accounts. Some of these may have been deleted by moderators.

HashFast promised (and still promises) delivery by Dec 31.

Notice how you deleted the quote that proves you wrong? I'll add it again. It's only 6 words. I know a couple of them have a lot of letters, but try reading it again.

That quote is completely irrelevant.

The only thing that matters is the Terms of Sale, which states Dec 31 is the guaranteed delivery date.

The Terms of Sale do not include your completely irrelevant quite, which is from an insecure internet forum of all things.   Roll Eyes

Cointerra promised mid December delivery.

It is now mid-December, but their chips aren't even finished.

Cointerra failed; they over-promised a mid-Dec date and under-delivered a late-Jan date instead.

Cointerra knew they couldn't delivery in Dec.  They lied to get our money and we will prove it when we sue them for fraud and false advertising.

Yes, orders can be transferred, but the Miner Protection Program cannot be sold, licensed or transferred by a customer.

This is clearly listed here:  https://hashfast.com/miner-protection-program/

-John

HashFast Technologies is unaware of a deal being done with any entity that would be able to offer these items for sale at these prices with such assurances on any HashFast products.

-John
We've got two powerful pieces of news today for our miners!

https://hashfast.com/were-upping-the-power-on-hashfast-rigs/

-John

Does this upgrade include MPP, would we get up to 4x the 800GH/s ?

Unfortunately, at that price, we cannot offer the Miner Protection Program.
-John

So, I think where I'm looking for more clarity is:

1) Cost of the board/rig required to run additional chips if the MPP gets executed. Do we have a parts manifest for this yet, or a price to outright buy a pre-assembled rig from Hashfast?

2) If anyone from Batch-1 gets additional chips from the MPP, everyone should. Otherwise, there can be situations in which people who are ahead in the shipment queue actually do worse. For example, let's say that the 1st BabyJet from batch-1 goes out on October 25th and has made a slight profit by Jan 23rd; under the current MPP verbiage as I read it, that means no new chips for Owner #1. Let's further say that the 500th BabyJet from batch-1 goes out November 25th, but has just barely not covered costs by Feb 22nd. In this case, the owner of the 500th gets new chips for free, but the owner of the 1st still doesn't. Given the low power consumption of BabyJets, they'll likely be worth running for quite some time, so over that lifetime, the owner of the 500th probably does better. It depends on the exact nature of how the overall network hash-rate curve develops, of course, but it seems to me that the fairest thing to do is to execute the MPP across the entire Batch; ie, if anyone from the batch gets more chips, everyone should.

Can we get some clarity/comments on the above?

In any event, HF seems to be doing great work. Tape-out ~10 days ago, plus the TSMC announcement...good stuff.

Hi Melbus,
These are great questions. I just sent them to engienering, so as to get the best possible answers. I will post here soon.
-John
still waiting for more information regarding their chip and foundry before taking the leap.  I still remember back when Avalon started, they had their TSMC contract for all to see which was great.

Hi, Cara tells me this is resolved. Please let me know if you ahve anyt further issues.  Thanks for your business!
 - John
As a Group Buy Coordinator of 1 co-op owned HashFast BabyJet, I am pleased with the terms and conditions of your MPP. I like the transparency and level of detail.

It should serve as a model for future ASIC rig pre-orders IMO. Anything you can add about the Motherboard specs/availability and institutional pricing for said Mommy boards? [IT Birds N Bees - "See son: "Baby computers are made when a Daddy board and a Mommy board fall in love and..."]

Could be an entrepreneurial opportunity there for someone.  Wink

Thanks!

Details are going to have to wait until after tapeout. (Engineering is busy right now)
However, we want to encourage others to design rigs for our chips and we are excited about what this community will do with them!

-John

Can you post details of chip communication, pin out, PCB designs, etc to github so that we can get started on designing rigs? It's pretty clear [for anyone who can do basic math] that your MPP is going to be triggered. Those who will be receiving bare chips as part of the MPP will need the additional boards.

Thanks

I can assure you that we will, but not until after tapeout, which is very very soon.
-John

Why should we believe a word of this?

Why should I care whether you do?
3167  Other / Meta / Re: New reply notification link no longer leading to the first unread reply? on: January 06, 2014, 06:13:45 AM
Why would it be hard to allow links that point to the page that is currently open?

AdBlock Plus filters are limited to the language of CSS selectors, which aren't powerful enough to do that. I've arranged things so that it's impossible to isolate the forum ad area using CSS selectors without also grabbing useful content as well. This is the second time that EasyList maintainers carelessly tried to block forum ads without checking whether it can be done safely...
3168  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin.net ownership changed - Satoshi is alive on: January 06, 2014, 01:14:21 AM
In this context, does "anonymous person" mean that you don't know his identity or that you know it but have reasons to not reveal it here?

I don't know his identity, and it was clear that he didn't want his identity to be known.
3169  Other / Meta / Re: Watchlist problem on: January 06, 2014, 01:12:40 AM
What browser do you use theymos?

All browsers suck. I actually use Firefox (mostly) because it sucks a little less AFAICT, but I'm frustrated with it daily.
3170  Other / Meta / Re: Watchlist problem on: January 06, 2014, 01:00:28 AM
It's a bug in EasyList for Adblock Plus. All links (including "anchor" links) are blocked when immediately inside of a post <td>:
Code:
bitcointalk.org##td[style="padding: 1px 1px 0 1px;"] > a

Complain to EasyList.

It's impossible for an Adblock Plus filter to block all of the forum's ads. Some ads can be individually blocked, but not all forum ads in general. They should stop trying or they're going to keep breaking things for their users.
3171  Other / Meta / Re: Watchlist problem on: January 05, 2014, 09:14:48 PM
I refuse to use shit browser

Why are you using Firefox, then? Wink

I think that Firefox 26 is broken somehow. I'll investigate it when I can.
3172  Other / Meta / Re: Watchlist problem on: January 05, 2014, 05:13:09 PM
Nothing changed on the forum's end. This is probably a Firefox bug unless there's something invalid about the forum's XHTML.
3173  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin.net ownership changed - Satoshi is alive on: January 05, 2014, 05:08:22 AM
I received the domains from an anonymous person who claimed to have worked with Satoshi in the early days. He claimed that Satoshi split up his assets before leaving in order to prevent too much centralization: The SourceForge project to Gavin, bitcoin.org to Sirius, and the two other domains to this anonymous person.
3174  Other / Meta / Re: The forum is now unusable via Tor on: January 04, 2014, 05:53:46 AM
I go through the ban list and remove them every week or two.

There's a Tor option to change exit nodes less frequently. Then when you find one that works, it doesn't stop working in 10 minutes.
3175  Other / Meta / Re: Alternate crypto is huge on: January 04, 2014, 02:40:45 AM
Three new alt-coin subforums added = my "show unread posts" is instantly flooded with new scamcoin announce threads. These add nothing to the community, and should be banished. Lock the entire sections, and replace it all with a single moderator sticky to other forums these people set up on their own, and make altcoin talk here against the board policies.

Add those boards to your ignore boards list if you don't want to see them in your unread posts. I actually manually adjusted settings for people who ignored Alt Cryptocurrencies so they would ignore the new subsections. There were only three such people...
3176  Other / Meta / Re: Database errors when replying and general forum sluggishness. on: January 04, 2014, 02:37:00 AM
If the feature was written as:
-For every thread page of 20 posts that someone views:
 -for every user that posted:
-look through every other user's ignore list and add up the times that user has been ignored

That's basically how it works because the ignore mod (which I didn't write) stupidly stores ignore info in a single column per user like "35,3,...". So each ignore button needs to scan through all established users. The cost of this used to be very little, but it has increased substantially as the number of users has increased. I added a lot of caching long ago to offset this, but the cost is too high now even for that. I need to mostly rewrite the ignore mod so it stores data more sanely. No too difficult, but it requires a somewhat large uninterrupted block of time, which I don't have right now.
3177  Other / Meta / Re: [Feature added] Color besides usernames for Ignored by % of established members. on: January 03, 2014, 10:43:56 PM
I've had to totally disable this feature. I will fix it in a few days.
3178  Other / Meta / Re: hugolp (staff) account hacked? on: January 03, 2014, 04:57:03 PM
His account was indeed compromised.
3179  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How will version .9 do away with hardcoded transaction fees? on: January 03, 2014, 06:29:15 AM
It likely won't.

I think that the long-term solution will have to be allowing transactions to be cancelled and resent with a higher fee. Hardcoded fees fall out of date (and aren't free-market), but I think that it'll always be possible for miners to trick automatic fee calculators into paying more than necessary. So it should be left mostly up to the users to figure out an appropriate fee with trial and error. Transaction cancellation is extremely difficult to add to Bitcoin-Qt, though, so this probably won't happen in 0.9. I don't think that Gavin's fee calculator will be included, either. Fees will probably remain hardcoded for now.
3180  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why bitcoin uses irc.lfnet.org? on: January 03, 2014, 06:20:00 AM
When Bitcoin was kicked off of Freenode, laszlo allowed us to use LFnet, which is run by him and his associates. It was actually good that Freenode kicked us off: it turns out that IRC is not very good for bootstrapping, and changes to the LFnet server were necessary to prevent nodes from being overwhelmed.
