Can we bid for ad slots, serve empty HTML/CSS up to this day & time, then you would update it when we notify you with 24 hours of notice?

Yes.
3382  Other / Meta / Re: "Watching" posts, no longer needed can we kill them? on: September 17, 2013, 09:39:24 PM
"Automatically watch Threads I posted in" enabled set as default.

That is the default for new accounts.
3383  Other / Meta / Re: how do delete a topic? on: September 15, 2013, 11:35:32 PM
Previously you couldn't, but I think that I fixed this several months ago. (I actually first tried to fix it over a year ago, but at the time this didn't stick for some reason.)
3384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who started calling it a "satoshi"? on: September 15, 2013, 09:44:45 PM
That is a good question, how did Satoshi refer to these units?

They're not referred to by any special name in the code that Satoshi wrote. Satoshi never used the term.
3385  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 97 on: September 15, 2013, 06:31:36 PM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software and for other useful purposes, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Seven of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts at least 7 days starting from when I put it up. (However, if you look at the ad history you'll see that ads frequently get 1-2 extra days, but this is random and definitely not guaranteed.)

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Ad blocking

Hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression counts for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all seven slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 7 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 7 slots. If the two highest bids are 7 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 6 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.50.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.
3386  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 96 on: September 15, 2013, 06:25:10 PM
Auction ended. Final result:
Slots BTC/Slot Person
7 27 betcointm

I'd need a bit of clarification though, if there are 10 slots why is betcoin raising his bid when it will not actually shut out hashfast?

This auction is for only 7 slots.
3387  Other / Meta / Re: help on: September 15, 2013, 04:18:29 PM
AFAIK, you can't, anymore. I'm unsure why the option to delete your own threads was removed.

You also can't report your own threads so a moderator can see your request to delete it.

Your best bet is to replace the title and body with something like a period, so it's mostly blank, then lock the topic.

(this subforum is for technical support relating to Bitcoin, not the forum)

It's been years since you could delete your own topic...
grondilu deleted the whole "What will governments do against Bitcoin?" thread, which had diverged more into a philosophical debate about politics.

I removed the "Remove own topics" permission for regular users.  I didn't know they could do that.  It would be OK if it only deleted if it only has your own posts in it, like if you accidentally posted in the wrong place.

At the same time, I enabled "Move own topic".

I think that you can report your own posts.
3388  Other / Meta / Per-user signature class on: September 15, 2013, 04:08:44 PM
On topic pages, every signature now has a class like "sig35" (in my case) containing the user's ID. This should make it easy to block a particular user's signature. For example, to block the signature of pedrog (user ID 112476) using Adblock Plus, add this filter:
bitcointalk.org##.sig112476

Someone could create an ABP filter subscription to block annoying signatures.
3389  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Roger Ver Endorses Trace Mayer For Bitcoin Foundation Board Seat on: September 15, 2013, 03:35:05 PM
Yes, except for one problem.  The Bitcoin Foundation says they are doing things for the benefit of all Bitcoin users (see their tax returns that were recently posted on their blog), not just their members.  So they are trying to influence nonmembers without giving them representation.

The Foundation doesn't have any control over bitcoin.org or Bitcoin development, so that's somewhat irrelevant here. In any case, I don't see a problem in trying to help people without asking them first as long as property rights, etc. are respected. That's what many charitable organizations do.
3390  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Foundation Final Debate on: September 15, 2013, 05:49:22 AM
Wow, that was a really good debate! All of the candidates did very well. Much better than any debate I've seen.

Joerg and Trace seem to want the Foundation to be in charge of development at some level, which I find very dangerous for any legally-defined organization to do.  I'd prefer the Foundation to be totally uninvolved in Bitcoin-Qt development and focus more on legal stuff, behaving more like the NRA or EFF. It'd also dangerous for one US-based Foundation to act as some sort of oversight organization for many Bitcoin Foundations worldwide; the Foundation should help international organizations, but each organization should be separate in order to maximize decentralization. Elizabeth said some nice things in these areas.

I wish someone would have corrected Trace when he was complaining about the Foundation taking money from people and then removing them from bitcoin.org: The Foundation has nothing to do with bitcoin.org, so this is a ridiculous complaint.

I liked most of what Elizabeth, Ben, and Luke said here. I'd be satisfied if any of them won, though I think that Elizabeth is the best candidate.
3391  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Roger Ver Endorses Trace Mayer For Bitcoin Foundation Board Seat on: September 15, 2013, 02:56:18 AM
the majority should determine the direction of Bitcoin.

No. Individuals should decide what they do with their own stuff. bitcoin.org is owned by one person who decides to use it in certain ways. The developers own their own time and skills. You don't have any right to influence how these things are used. I'm certainly not going to allow any majority to force me into doing things that I know are wrong with the assets under my control. Just because a majority of people (or a loud minority of people...) believe something doesn't mean that it's true. (Of course, I'm always willing to read and carefully consider reasonable arguments.)
3392  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 15, 2013, 01:09:16 AM
So instead of answering the issues on a discussion board she makes some kind of video where she stands there and gives a prepared speech.  That, coupled with the posts in this thread lead me to believe that, once again, something weird is going on at the Bitcoin Foundation.

What issues? The ones in this thread? She doesn't read this forum (I agree that this is non-optimal, but no one's perfect), and the posts here are mostly vague complaints. Make a list of unasked, polite, concise questions and I'll post it on the Foundation forum.

The video will be effective at convincing the people who need convincing.
3393  Other / Off-topic / Re: Linux is such a horrible OS (for casual users) on: September 15, 2013, 12:47:38 AM
That is not a pure Windows command. He added Linux commands in his system.

The Linux kernel doesn't come with sed, grep, etc., either.

Also there are no malware in Linux.

Malware does exist for Linux, though it's more rare. Desktop Linux installations are typically not more secure than Windows: in both cases, all of your GUI programs run under one user, and they can all access each other's memory (somewhat easier on Linux, AFAIK), log keystrokes, etc.
3394  Other / Off-topic / Re: Linux is such a horrible OS (for casual users) on: September 14, 2013, 11:09:31 PM
On the other hand, only OS X and Linux gives me flexibility for one-liners such as

Code:
ssh root@xpm24 "./primecoind.2 listtransactions \"\" 20 | grep blocktime |  sed -e \"s/.* : //\" -e \"s/,//\" | sort | xargs -n 1 -I '{}' date --date=@'{}'"

Huh

3395  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 14, 2013, 09:32:01 PM
She's pretty fluent, but I can spot a few times where she hesitates due to reaching the end of the line on the script she's reading from. Not so professional, not so convincing. Notice how she's looking slightly high and to her right; this is where her script is positioned.

Yeah, I noticed that, though she sounds more natural as the video goes on. I wonder if she would sound better or worse with an extemporaneous speech -- there might be a lot more "uhm"s, etc. In any case, I'm not too bothered by it. She's good enough at speaking for this role.

The video repeats stuff that she's already written, but seeing her say it might appeal to some people. It's nice that she went to the trouble of making it.

14MtPdKuhneK3c16fTTESm143CDHD85Jni is MtGox. Not very useful. Sad
3398  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC? on: September 12, 2013, 11:15:31 PM
There's a lot of mixing involved with the fraud address... Here are a couple of the eventual locations: https://blockchain.info/address/1Kf1nT7jQnFC7N3tSdgg5qKGTV4MucfpBg | https://blockchain.info/address/16CvEwBTGfE7zhxKK7dzQEqCG6pSHXfLRe |

The first one has an input from Theymos, so maybe he could shed light. There's not really any way to verify MB actually holds any of that... They could be donations, assuming he's even 1FRAUD - which wouldn't make sense to connect with the donation address. So many mysteries!

1Kf1nT7jQnFC7N3tSdgg5qKGTV4MucfpBg is John's forum treasury address. Which of the inputs is linked to the suspicious address in question? I can tell you the source of most of them.
3399  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: STAFF member xDeathwing is a SCAMMER! on: September 11, 2013, 03:50:48 AM
Haha. Well kk. Wouldnt you think that it would only be fair if he paid 0.25 (1/2 of what he promised?)

I don't think that bounties are generally enforceable. In an informal bounty like this without specific language to the contrary, the bounty creator retains sole control over who receives the bounty, even if the community disagrees with him. So I don't think that xDeathwing is obligated to pay anything, though due to the confusion and small amount of money involved, he probably should pay 0.5.

I removed him as a moderator because this is all a bit shady, and his conduct in this thread leads me to believe that he is too reckless/careless to be a good moderator, not because I believe him to be guilty of scamming in this case.

Just a little off-topic question... DO you know turkish or did you use translate.google.com?

I used translate.google.com. (If I knew Turkish, I'd moderate the section myself!)
