Windows XP is fine with me and works great on the hardware I mentioned. If I ever go *nix way on them then it will be Debian or OpenBSD.

Firefox and Tor Browser work good on Windows XP with 512 RAM. Biggest issue is Flash in Youtube and webpages. And I always run with AdBlock Edge add-on.

The concern is longevity and portability of the notebook. If somebody here want to swap my HP Pavilion dv8000 (AMD Turion-64 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM, Radeon Xpress graphics chip, dual hard drives 100GB each) for Panasonic CF-29 in working condition I will do it.
Okay, but you know that XP is not supported anymore, right? Could make you vulnerable to a lot of cyber-attacks, which wouldn't be good if you're entering passwords and running bitcoin clients and stuff.
Lubuntu is Debian based btw.

In few weeks I'm going to be deployed in combat zone. I want to take some form of portable computer with me. I currently have old HP Pavilion dv8000 17-inch notebook. I am not sure that dv8000 will survive in my backpack longer than me. I will leave it in barracks or APC before going on patrol or assault but I really have no idea how the situation will develop.

I am looking at Panasonic Toughbook CF-29. Are Pentium-M 1.6GHz with 1GB RAM capable running Bitcoin with some other things (Tor Browser, Firefox, Youtube) on that CPU? My pentium4 desktop runs full Bitcoin node but the blockchain synch and startup takes really long time like 15 minutes to launch the Bitcoin Core client.

How about taking Asus EEE PC 701 or similar? I know the SSD drive with reasonable capacity is expensive and how the Celeron or Atom is with newest Flash media and Firefox? I remember my partner used EEE PC 701 with Windows XP for networking and configuring when we installed network infrastructure for small ISP. It was pretty responsive for such small notebook.
I don't know about the other stuff you posted, but my tip to you is to install Lubuntu on the computer with Pentium-M 1.6GHz. Runs like a charm. Then it should be able to handle at least some lightweight client like MultiBit. Firefox and youtube works fine as well, and TOR shouldn't be a problem either.
I know for sure that Firefox and youtube works just fine even on only 512 MB ram. On Lubuntu that shouldn't be any problems.

My guess is that Asus EEE PC 701 should probably work with Lubuntu as well. I couldn't find the specs online (they all told me different).
Here's a link that could give you an idea if it would work: http://askubuntu.com/questions/162626/what-are-the-minimum-system-requirements-for-lubuntu
That being said, I don't know about youtube and stuff on it.

Could someone clarify how long transactions stay in the memory pool for?

My method for dealing with stuck transaction due to non fee paying (which is normally a mistake) is to send a transaction again but with a higher fee. Obviously this cant be done from an exchange but they should be paying fees anyway.

Just for future reference.
I don't know exactly how long, but it can stay there for several days.

Okay guys, I have a serious problem here, I want to play Assassins Creed: Unity when it's released. However, I don't want to spend all my money on buying PS4 or a gaming computer. But at the same time, I mean, it's the french revolution + Assassins Creed! There's no limit on how awesome that game could be!
So, what should I do? Cry

You can always play on your friend's PS4 and buy only the game Smiley

Or .. I dunno Smiley if you do not want to buy PS4 or a gaming PC you need to use not your device and play Cheesy

I don't think any of my friends will buy PS4 (or Xbox One for that matter). I cannot play on my computer either. Even if I played it on lowest settings possible it would probably lag (and I'd have to install windows as well). Gahhh!!! Maybe the PS4 prices goes down in the coming months? In that case I might consider buying it...

Maybe will go down a bit but perhaps not a lot.. Smiley
I can tell you what are best cheap PC parts to buy to build cheap game station that will run Assassin with no prob. Smiley

Yeah. I'm not a big fan of PC though. Maybe I can wait for the price to go down, and then buy a used PS4? That could be a plan!

This is good. And that guy has a very good point. Fucking neo-liberalism. That's what put us in this situation.

I forgot to mention The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown also
I have this book but haven't read it yet.Hard cover copy seems to huge.Is it worth a read?
The Lost Symbol is, but you can skip Inferno IMO.

Worst case, If it didn't confirm the BTC would have gone back into your wallet after a few days
Not all the time
Yes they would. As long as the transaction doesn't go through the bitcoins return to your wallet.

I've heard about this before. I find it very fascinating. However, my knowledge in cryptology is not so good, so I won't even try to solve it.
I hope one day we'll find out who is behind it though.

The Lost Symbol was a bit of a disappointment to me… I mean both, "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" were probably some of the best books I've ever read. However, The Lost Symbol, it was, well, good, but not more. And let's not talk about Inferno then. That was a total letdown. I even wish I hadn't read it.

357  Other / Off-topic / Re: Best place to build the Bitcoin island in the international waters on: April 17, 2014, 12:02:23 PM
Try near Benham Rise or in Benham Plateau.
Nope, that's a part of the Philippines.
Right in the middle of the pacific

As remote as possible to make sure telecommunication is almost impossible (apart from satellite), make it very difficult to get supplies in, be as unprotected as possible against hurricanes.
Great location  Cheesy
Also we could place massive cables on the sea bed, like it's done across the atlantic. I mean, with this massive budget we're thinking of that would be no problems.
It would not be hard getting supplies there, we'll just build an airport. No problems.
Hurricanes, well, we'd simply have to build hurricane safe buildings on the island. Shouldn't be that much of a problem using modern architecture. Smiley
I was thinking it might be a good place but it wooed be better to start building a 1 km x 1 km platform and then if the need for more land you build 1 more square, until you fulfilled the demand for land. The cheapest way doing it wooed be building a box of cement around it 2 m thick and then add stone on the outside of the cement wall and sand inside, and then place trees whit deep roots. (what I think no ex) In order to finance the project someone shude start up a fond, the thing is we want a land whit no oppression but we still want to get back our investments, whit will be huge, around 100 millions dollars. But I think it won’t be hard to get it back if we can make a safe heaven for tax dealers. They have to pay to stay on the island but it will be cheap compared to the huge amounts of money they have to tax in the own land.

Well my English is bad I aren’t native English speaker   Cool

love the ide ;Grin
I agree that it might be better to build it piece by piece, that would make the funding problem a bit less.

Any idea who's going to pay for all this in a country that doesn't raise any taxes from it's citizens?
This again shows that a lot of people are just dreamers and/or don't seem to be able to think rationally about things.
The plan is to build the island itself on money donated by people and companies. The house building process when the island is finished will be done by the people that owns pieces of land and wants buildings I guess?

359  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello and good day! on: April 17, 2014, 11:45:37 AM
EHD: External hard drive. Sorry for not defining that. I have multibit, it's what I started off with doing faucets and PTCs. I like it, but I was hoping to try my hand with mining directly, not earning a penny here or there... I have about $1.09 worth in BTC right now, or roughly BTC0.002.

I guess I'll let the syncing continue since I can sync overnight easily and just sync daily or weekly so all I would need to do is download the client onto the new computer when I have everything built and set-up. I have the memory for it lol.
But MultiBit doesn't need syncing in the way you describe it? To me it sounds like you have Bitcoin Core!
And you don't mine directly to multibit either. You mine using a pool, solo mining is just a waste of time.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. Ok I must be missing something substantial here. I have both clients. I started with Multibit because I thought that Bitcoin Core would take too long. So I created several addresses for the different faucet and PTC sites that I frequent. Is it possible to mine a pool with JUST Multibit? If so, HOW? I know they keep the heavy stuff off your computer by having servers running to connect to the lightweight client, but I thought it was just a connection, or storage for my BTC in the addresses. Please explain to me what I'm missing, or direct me to where I can find better info on it, because I have obviously missed something huge, or something is routinely not mentioned in what I've read about. I'm still trying to understand pools and the whole mining in the cloud thing, so any references are seriously going to help on that as well. I don't want to mess up anything and lose my efforts or BTC because I failed to understand everything correctly!

I am still syncing Bitcoin Core, since I have the memory on my external hard drive for it, and my computer's handling that just fine. A bit slow, but I don't think I'll do any harm on it. I'm at about 283,000 blocks, 11 weeks behind, and it seems to be going pretty steadily with little hiccups here and there, about every 1000 blocks or something like that.
No, I think you misunderstand, you cannot mine with Multibit, you need separate software for that, however I highly recommend you don't mine bitcoins on your computer. Multibit only keeps your private keys (aka your wallet).
I can explain some mining concepts for you here:
-----------
Cloud Mining - You buy Gh/s (mining power) from another company that owns a lot of mining hardware. They mine for you, and you get the money essentially. The Gh/s:es is also traded between the customers, which means you could end up selling your Gh/s for less than you bought it for.
-----
Pool Mining - You connect your mining device (Computer, ASIC, Phone) to mine together with many more people that does the same thing. The Pool gives you a specific task, and you get paid for each of these tasks you solve (if the pool solves the block first of course). Don't do this unless you have an ASIC.
-----
Solo mining - You let your mining device mine alone. It will try to solve the block itself. Don't go for this no matter what.
-----------
You could also mine Scrypt based coins, and in that case you could go for pool mining if you have a good GPU. You can then exchange the coins earned for BTC.

There's no need to use both MultiBit and Bitcoin Core, neither it is to have many separate addresses to get some dust from faucets.

The company I buy my BTC through here in the UK operates an affiliate scheme which pays 1% of the BTC price when anyone buys BTC by clicking on my link. Would I be allowed to put that as my signature?

Also how much roughly can people expect to earn by using the companies/websites you mention in their signature?
Yes, you can put your affiliate link in your signature, no problems.

Currently as a full member I get 0.0005BTC per constructive post I make on the RitzGrandCasino deal. Members only get 0.0003BTC per post, so if you signed up you'd earn a bit less.
Here's the list of all the deals again so you can check for yourself: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=333916.0
