I just wonder if the ransom ware hack had anything to do with the sharp rise in BTC?
if you look, there's a couple threads in the general area of the forum here that tracked the BTC going into the ransom addresses. it wasn't that significant last i checked. now, the effect of the knowledge of bitcoin that stemmed from the ransomware attack is an entirely different subject.

profit taking galore, looks like. and who can really be surprised? i'm impressed the upward pressure has kept going though.

Strong words. I can barely even get by everyday. Dying just to make ends meet. I am way too far from that. Dont even know where to start and where i am heading with this bitcoin thing.
i hear ya. sure, i've been around bitcoin since, what, 2011? but i don't have any. heck, i owe a guy on this forum like 2.4 BTC. i've had a repeated series of unfortunate events happen in the last few years that have left me unemployed and broke as hell. no idea what the future holds. but it'll be interesting to watch, at least.

as i said back around 1800 or so, BUBBLES! this is crazy territory. play at your own risk, and don't be surprised when it snaps back violently.

Stamp and Finex are with the same price now, or almost. Looks like people are afraid to buy above $2000, or has the withdraws already been restored? i hear that. i remember spending some around $10 a coin...
Tell me about it. I have a $400 t-shirt apparently. It isn't even a good size for me. I have some overpriced stuff too. Won't make the calculations so I won't feel depressed. in 2013, i moved, and in need of money, sold ten BTC to my brother for 1000. this was pre-bubble, so a fair price. when we hit 1500, i called him and made sure he hadn't lost the password and such, as i was feeling sick at the thought of knowing he "lost" 15,000 bucks. i just... try and not think about it now. obviously, i'm failing that last part.

Hey ya'll! Looks like Bitstamp may test $2000 today. I remember when the price was $19.00, I feel the same right now.

1907 and climbing on stamp. yea... this is going into crazy bubble territory.

looking at the spike, it looks like they must have immediately sold back.

a very detailed and clear response. thanks!

if we break 2k, i think we'll be in for a hell of a ride, akin to the 2013 bubble. too much, too fast, then panic back down.

i think it's meant to be like the rising and (rare, but possible) falling of the difficulty. it can adjust up, or down, as needed.
though as i sit here typing this i'm having a hard time thinking of a real reason it would need to get smaller. the difficulty, of course, needs to match the available hash power to provide security and keep the prescribed block times. but since we can already make and confirm smaller blocks if we want to, i don't know that a reduction in max size is needed.
i'm not a coder of any kind, though. don't take my word for it.

what are the new rates? i checked the original post, didn't see a change.

this transaction backlog is just getting insane. i mean really out of control. but i don't really see what we could do about it. what i mean is, even with segwit or BU's solution to scaling, couldn't these type of spam attacks just continue?

could track what the max block size was for a given difficulty, perhaps? either a database of "this difficulty = this blocksize" or some sort of code, while determining orphans, to check if the blocksize was valid at the time.
