I'm reading that they could also do a remote reflash of the firmware and potentially brick the hardware.

that was correct in theory, but they've now patched the firmware, so it's a non-issue.

Is this the same C Shrem that was find guilty and went to prison?
Yes. IIRC he was released a few months ago.

well, that's good to hear. if i recall the charges were really really crappy.

Wow, that's a beautiful beach in Cuba ... commies can ruin anything.

I highly recommend you watch The Cuba Libre Story on Netflix.  Yes, Che Guevara was communist, but Fidel Castro was opposed to it until the US branded him as one.  At that point he had no choice but to embrace the Soviets.  That said, we've never seen real communism on a national scale.  We've seen autocracies hiding behind a communist banner.  The central tenant of communism is worker owned businesses, not state run economies.

yea, but now the concept of communism is tainted by those autocracies, so we may never see a real one. least in our life times.

This is the point at which the product needs to rebrand

it worked wonders for global warm- i mean climate change. Cheesy (i know that sounds sarcastic, but really, there has been progress on the matter, whatever you call it.)

and to a point, hasn't communism already rebranded several times? socialism for a failed example. eh, i guess they were used pretty interchangeably. ok, democratic socialist? i know it's not strict communism, but it's ...got similarities? i guess?
384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin puzzle transaction ~32 BTC prize to who solves it on: April 27, 2017, 05:46:16 PM
this is rather fascinating.
385  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 27, 2017, 05:43:43 PM
We designed a feature, that would allow us (or cloudflare or our nameserver registrar or anyone hacking them or any court/law enforcement with jurisdiction over any one of them) to effectively shut down BTC (bring it to a halt) with one line of code. And then unintentionally merged it into production code, siwwy us, its only a bug and the decentralized crypto currency community should not be upset.  Cheesy Grin when is the damn movie coming out?Huh

Eh? Care to explain?

i assume he's referring to antbleed, as it's been called. a feature bitmain was going to use for something but never finished. it left code in the firmware of their hardware that would allow them, or anyone capable of "man in the middle" attacks ot shut down a miner with a very simple code, or, possibly, execute whatever code they wanted on the mining hardware.

they have just recently patched this in the last couple hours. see thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1888573.0

what are paybis paying for your sig banner?

i think it's .0065 (maybe .00065? it's publicly listed in their thread.) per post, up to 20 posts weekly.

currently unemployed, so it's the only way i have to pay him back, right now. had an interview yesterday and a temp agency wants me to come by today, so that could change though.

why do you ask?
387  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: will ted kaczynski solve prime factorization and crash the price of bitcoin? on: April 27, 2017, 05:33:32 PM
let's assume for a moment that he IS going to solve it, legitimately, for real. let's also assume it would dramatically effect something involved in the bitcoin protocol (which, as described above, it basically doesn't.)

I think that if RSA and ECDS is broken suddenly, bitcoin's security would be the least of our worries !  About all public key cryptography would be broken, https, certificates, your banking application, ....

indeed. this is exactly why i find threads like the one about the entire internet going down so stupid. if that happened, almost nothing would work. forget bitcoin.
388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: April 27, 2017, 05:31:52 PM
It's better to divide the month into four and buy weekly, because bitcoin tends to be too volatile for the monthly to work out as well, so instead of buying $100 per month, buy $25 per week.

yea, but depending on method of purchase, the fees involved could be worse that way. transferring to an exchange and whatnot i mean. unless you transferred in large amounts and let them sit on the exchange, but... well, eww.

where's this sign up for getting paid to talk up a certain perspective? i'm totally available! and look, i'm an old account. i have all sorts of inherent value. i'll shill, honest i will!

just pay up front.

(this is all a joke, btw. no one pays me for anything i say. i'm not that lucky.)

You are not that openly immoral.

no, but broke and increasingly desperate...

hence why i said it was a joke.

i dont get it

people were saying how there are shill posters getting paid to promote certain views. i jokingly asked where to sign up. that's all.

small clarification question: IF we did end up deciding a POW change was needed, wouldn't that require a hard fork? like, even more-so than any aspect of the scaling debate?

serious question. how could we possibly ever change the algo at this point? we know full well unless it was 100% proven broken we'd never get agreement a change was needed, and even if that happened, we'd never get agreement on WHAT to change to.
391  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin is not Ideal, it represents possibilities. on: April 27, 2017, 06:27:58 AM
Three years ago or two years ago, if you asked me what Bitcoin is, I’d tell you it is the future of money. It is managed by the network, not by the government. Plus, it is private, anonymous and fast. It’s just perfect!
And Bitcoin is proved very successful. But it has inherent risks like anonymity, hacking,51%attack, double spending. Stop imagining bitcoin is perfect. No coins are perfect. I’d say bitcoin means more about possibilities, possibilities of expression of value. Before, I’ve been taken it for granted that the government should control currencies. But now I’d like to take a moment to think of the question:
“What is the nature and origin of money?”

show me more than a single double spend that actually occurred.

anonymity isn't inherently negative.

the network has never been hacked.

he's in prison. you don't actually think his research would get out and published and ever be considered reputable, do you?

ok, maybe it would get out and someone else would claim it, but come on man. there's a REASON he's in supermax, and mathematics genius or not, sanity is not high on the list things he has in there. sane people don't try to blow others up.

I think at 2017 end btc price will reach around 2k$+ and more at 2018

Yes that's what we all are expecting to happen in this year and bitcoin is moving in a positive direction at a moment so that price is likely to achieve by the end of the year and if you manage to hold it longer then you will be making some higher profits in future.

we're all expecting it? oh crap, we're so screwed.

Up $100 per week needs to be the new standard.

Make it so!

i'd be very ok with this.
398  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 25, 2017, 05:13:07 PM
i'm surpised how steady and stable the rise has been the last few days. it's so unusual for BTC...
399  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The impossible has been reached: LTC has 100% SW support! Can BTC ever do it? on: April 25, 2017, 06:59:06 AM
well think about that, litecoin doesn't have litecoin unlimited competitors, so they have no choice, and also miners know that by supporting segwit now on litecoin the value will increase, this is a win situation for them

no miners i his right mind would say no to thisand there is also no asic boost for litecoin that i'm aware of, but with bitcoin is different the situation have muliple "antagonist" to segwit

lack of antagonists is a very good point.
400  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The impossible has been reached: LTC has 100% SW support! Can BTC ever do it? on: April 24, 2017, 09:12:32 PM
i still don't really understand the benefits of segwit - taking the witness data and putting it elsewhere, as i understand it - or whatever it is that BU is porposing - with their code fails i've not looked - compared to just dynamically increasing blocksize.

oh, wait, doesn't segwit actually fix a malleability flaw?
