i used to run a full node... then i moved, and now have limited (40 GB a month...) data. sigh.

what is this FOMO thing, anyway?
443  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 17, 2017, 08:23:50 PM
I am a bit surprised that noone has mentioned one of the consecuences a split between CORE and BU would have, apart from the AMAZINGLY HUGE volatility lower combined price etc...

1) If Bitcoin is split in two, core side will be at 1MB max block size at that time, and BU with an undetermined but bigger max block size.

2) Both "parties" will start dumping each other strongly. Chaos will reign and volatility could be so huge as to wipe ENTIRE order books up and down. (mainly down, even to 0).

3) All leveraged positions will be wiped on the peaks and valleys.

4) The difficulty will be much higher than the hashrate which, by itself, will create big delays between blocks. It is uncertain how big though.

And this is what I haven't seen anyone mention:

5) There will be a huge spike in transactions with people sending his coins to the exchanges. And I mean an unprecedently HUGE number of transactions. Orders of magnitude higher than anything we have ever seen.

6) Core with its 1MB max block and difficulty over hashrate combined will take ages to move the coins (which is not that bad because there will be less BTC coins arriving at the exchanges to be dumped), BU blocksize...well, I am not sure what it will do in that scenario, but it is possible that it will lead to additional hard forks/blocksize adjustment. Also Orphan blocks will be everywhere.

7) Even if in that scenario it seems that BU would be at an advange with its increased TPS over BTC, that will lead to more BUcoins arriving at the exchanges and being dumped by BTC supporters. The price of BUcoin will be much lower than BTC, at least for some time (days, weeks, months, maybe forever).

I could go on... but the only reasonable conclusion is that all this chaos and confussion will benefit noone (maybe to exchanges in the short period, due to the extreme volatility and huge number of trades) and that all this nonsense must come to and end now.

i think plenty of people agree with that sentiment - chaos is bad, contentious hard fork = chaos.

the problem, i think arises with HOW to stop the divide. as in, "ok, we're not gonna fork, but we're also not going to give in! our way or nothing!" which... well, stagnation, which is what we have, solution wise.

it all depends on which chain satoshi dumps on...
that chain will die.
not because he crashed its price
but because he expressed his preference

damn... if that happened ... wow. just, wow.
444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why BU should be correctly classified as an attempted robbery of BTC, not a fork on: March 17, 2017, 08:15:16 PM
Is there a date for the possible launch of a hardfork?

as far as i am aware, no. but i am by no means an authority, or even well informed...

Heh.. yeah, it really looks like that BU fork is happening any day now  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

wait - bitcoin unlimited has 11%? that's what we're dealing with? 11 FUCKING PERCENT!? jesus christ you guys.

or am i wrong and even with that 11% we'd still be shy of activating segwit? do we need 90% consensus or 95%?

it's about hashrate not nodes. and 32% isnt THAT minor.

ah, my mistake.

lemme see if i have this straight - bitcoin core is somehow tied (loosely?) with blockstream, who apparently can't be trusted cause they took bank money. Core wants to implement segwit - allowing, later, blockstream's LN.

on the other hand, we have bitcoin unlimited, who want... well, i'm honestly not sure, but something besides segwit? and LOTS of people here don't trust THAT, parlty due to a recent exposure of a major bug.

or, to sum up - jack shit has been solved regarding scaling in years of arguing.

good job guys.
LN isn't from Blockstream, Drya and Poon came up with it (expanding other people's work).  They don't work for Blockstream.  Blockstream has some people working on LN (2 IIRC), but there are many teams working on a LN implementation (while coordinating with each other so these implementations can communicate with eachother properly.

Claims that bitcoin is being capped to profit from a monopoly on LN usage are also hogwash, since LN is an open-source protocol, just like bitcoin.

ah. well hell, i was close.

actually the latest goes somthing like this
google created blockstream covertly, blockstream bought some core devs ( the right ones ), in an attempt to centralize development and usage of bitcoin, so that google can rain ruler of the world once all LN payments are backed by the onchain BTC they control

BU is a bunch of bitcoiners who dont have a clue.

...which we can't prove at all, and of course can't DISprove either.

also, based on the last twenty years, i don't know that i'd complain much about google ruling the world...

Wow, that's a beautiful beach in Cuba ... commies can ruin anything.

I highly recommend you watch The Cuba Libre Story on Netflix.  Yes, Che Guevara was communist, but Fidel Castro was opposed to it until the US branded him as one.  At that point he had no choice but to embrace the Soviets.  That said, we've never seen real communism on a national scale.  We've seen autocracies hiding behind a communist banner.  The central tenant of communism is worker owned businesses, not state run economies.

yea, but now the concept of communism is tainted by those autocracies, so we may never see a real one. least in our life times.

The bitcoin naysayers have always been wrong. I wonder for how much longer they remain to exist...

In other words:
" A scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it. " Max Planck

That was beautiful.

beautiful and very, very applicable to current times...

asking for $250 USD, but negotiable.

better part of two months, but hours wise, something like 15, maybe 20? not really sure.

would have been a lot faster with better tools. a dremel can DO the work, but it's not fast at cutting and grinding steel.
452  Other / Off-topic / Re: anyone interested in custom knives? my 2nd one! on: March 01, 2017, 09:41:44 PM
hopefully, making a living by selling! Cheesy

i didn't have a particular use in mind here, just kinda let the pencil do what it wanted.
453  Other / Off-topic / Re: anyone interested in custom knives? my 2nd one! on: March 01, 2017, 08:32:53 PM
1/8th inch thick, yea. and the handle is held on with the pins and loctite 5 minute epoxy. it should hold up to whatever just fine.

Sounds rugged indeed.

i'm just afraid to try it!

While I do like collecting knives, ultimately they are tools for me! Of course, I would say it's up to whoever purchases your knife to be the one to "break it in" (unless you planned on making a "run" of them in which case it would be cool to show off it's durability).

and yea, i need a good sharpener... first thing i'll buy when i get some money.

I need one myself. The one I want is pricey though!

https://www.wickededgeusa.com/product/precision-sharpener-we130/

that... is one hell of a sharpener.

and i'll probably make more like this one eventually, but i need some tools to assure better repeatability and consistency first.

i agree, tools. meant to be used. if i wasn't so broke and therefore kinda really needing the money from selling it, i'd have bought enough steel to make two, and test one to destruction.

maybe next time.

i can get it hair shaving sharp, but since i only have a dremel it's a very uneven, ugly looking edge.

Nothing a good sharpener won't fix.

i think the biggest bushcraft concern would be rust. it's 1080 steel, high carbon and not much else, so it'll be susceptible to rust.

I mean, the blade looks nice and thick from the pics, so I'm sure it could survive a beating (stuff like hitting it with a piece of wood to split another piece of wood), as long as the handle is up to it. Rust is only a concern if it's neglected! Wink

how much custom knives, and can shiping outside youre country or not

what country would i be shipping to? i'd need to check rules. don't think it would be a problem though.

i'd like $250 USD, so about .2 btc. plus shipping, depending.
456  Other / Off-topic / Re: anyone interested in custom knives? my 2nd one! on: March 01, 2017, 07:00:43 AM
Nice blade mate! I always wanted to craft some. Did you use a beltsander for shaping it or only hands tools?

Posted From bitcointalk.org Android App

no belt sander, don't have one. mostly my dremel rotarty tool, but the details and shiny finish were hand tools.
457  Other / Off-topic / Re: anyone interested in custom knives? my 2nd one! on: March 01, 2017, 06:24:23 AM
That's sweet! I see the errors you mentioned in the bladeforums post, but I think that just gives it "personality".

How many hours do you have into it?

Do you think it would take a beating (as say... a bushcraft knife)?

it SHOULD survive a beating, though i can't really guarantee it. the heat treat wasn't anywhere close to precise, ya know? if i were less afraid of destroying it, i'd test it some, but... yea. my nerves couldn't take that.

hours, probably something like 15 or 20?

One of these days, one bitcoin will be worth more than an ounce of gold!

pretty sure that happened (briefly) last time we were in this price region...

let's see... spot gold is currently 1253? yea. we're close.
