361  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / The peril of ICOs on: April 16, 2018, 06:04:45 PM
I thought this article was worth sharing. ICOs have become huge in the past couple years, and it's interesting to note that many of them often fizzle out, and when you invest in an ICO, you do not have the same types of investor protections that you would have if you invested in a venture in the more conventional way.

362  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: April 16, 2018, 06:00:16 PM
It was nice to see NEM get back into the 30s again (cents). I wouldn't mind it staying low or even dropping when I happen to have some cash to buy more, but otherwise, I'd like to see it back in the one to two dollar range.
Well, fortunately or unfortunately, the market doesn't care about whether you have some cash or not. The best thing to do is stick with a list of actions in different market conditions. e.g. you might say invest below 30c, and then if the price falls below that, just invest into it. Trying to time the markets based on personal financial situation is futile - it is only a worthy endeavor to manage risk, but hopefully you'd have already taken that into consideration.

Ah yes, the indifferent market--I know it well. I have a coin that is in the process of being listed on an exchange so that's what I'm holding out for. I figure once I can sell it I'll buy half XEM and half DNotes with the proceeds. And I'm aware that the timing won't necessarily be ideal, but that's OK. Some of us have to take into account the rest of our life and figure out how to make the crypto part still work. I've got it covered Smiley

I am glad to hear that they have been good to work with. Cryptopia struggled with keeping up with their growth for a while, but they seem to have weathered that fine.

It will be tough to wait nearly an entire month to buy more DNotes, but at least we can now stake them in the mean time.

Cryptopia Will be Listing DNotes 2.0 on May 12th!

We have been working with Cryptopia's service team to work out the details for listing DNotes 2.0 and proud to announce that Cryptopia will be listing DNotes 2.0 on May 12th, 2018. This will be after their DNotes 1.x delisting has been completed to prevent any confusion for their customers. Cryptopia has by far been the most responsive and professional exchange we have worked with to date and we appreciate all of their efforts.

Thank you to everyone that helped make Cryptocurrency Education Week a success!

We are very grateful to everyone that shared posts on social media. It is unbelievable how many people OUTSIDE the industry were reached with your help. When DNotesEDU is noticed, DNotes is noticed. Wink

Thank you wiser for the great article on Steemit:   Cryptocurrency Education Week is on! - https://steemit.com/dnotes/@wiser/cryptocurrency-education-week-is-on

Winners have been notified, and we will be sending out their DNotes later today or tomorrow.

Have a great day everyone!  Smiley

Congratulations to all the winners!

This is a great idea. Will it be around the same time next year?

Congratulations!!! And thank you DNotesEDU Team for your amazing efforts to promote good digital currency practices and reach out beyond our industry to educate people!

Thank you wiser and Joe!

We will definitely keep it up as part of Financial Literacy Month in April.

2018 is predicted to be the start of institutional investing, and there will be an even greater need for accurate cryptocurrency knowledge. Our open and accurate assessment of risks within the industry, will go a long way in building credibility with investors. Judging by some of the cryptocurrency/ICO recommendations coming from mainstream finance, they should take a few steps back and 'enrol' at DNotesEDU.  Grin

Yeah, "conventional wisdom" doesn't always mean "wisdom." Let me know if you ever need an extra writer for a project--I enjoyed writing the guides on CryptoMoms. I realize too how much I still have to learn, and writing about various topics is a great way to learn them more in depth.

50888608 is the current network weight.

I found the export tab and it works great! So glad it's there. That brings up another question. Is there a way to clear orphans or remove "false" transactions? I have a "generated but not accepted" staking incidence that would be nice to get rid of so it doesn't clutter up my data.

Ok good. That does sound like the number of coins that would be staking on the network. Regarding the rest of your questions, I will verify before providing the answers.

That sounds like a great option. We probably want export options would allow you to chose what transactions to export and ignore orphan transactions. I will add it to our list.

OK, so network weight is simply the total amount of DNotes that are staking in that moment. I think the first time I looked at it, my mind added an extra three zeroes and I was like, I *know* there aren't 50 billion DNotes out there! 50 million makes a lot more sense, as the total supply is around 150 million.

I'm guessing based on those numbers that coin age is not a factor in staking, but definitely please confirm.

On the export, I was also going to request the ability to export a custom date range. The first time I export, I'll want to export everything, but after that, it would be nice to only export the new transactions since the last export. And yes, having it ignore the "false" staking incidences would be great. I remember one wallet I owned having a "clear orphans" function which deleted those from the wallet itself, but that doesn't seem to be a common feature.

I'm actually hoping I can keep records via API. However, I have to see how the API handles recording of the staking transactions. That's been an issue for me with other coins. I'm planning to give that a shot this week. If API recording doesn't work, then the export function is the next best option.

Just curious to see if this works as an interim solution:
Plug in your address to the block explorer
https://chainz.cryptoid.info/note/
Export the transactions as CSV.

I know I could do that as I've exported plenty of records with DMD Diamond, and they use the same block explorer service. The issue for me is that I'd have to run each address separately, whereas in the wallet I could export all transactions for all the addresses in one single file. Depending on metrics like ideal coin pile size, etc., that might become irrelevant if I decide to just combine all my coins into a single address.

The issue I had with the API with DMD Diamond was that although the block explorer and the wallet shows minting transactions as a simple addition of the minted amount, the API would import each staking transaction as a withdrawal of the minting coin pile, and then a new deposit of the two new coin piles that were created from the minting. I had all deposits on the address labeled as "mining" (because staking was the only thing that address was doing) so when it came time to figure out taxes, all those transactions looked like I'd made millions in mining--basically repeatedly withdrawing and depositing the same coins! My accountants about had a heart attack. I'm going to see what happens with DNotes, but if it behaves the same way, then I'll just set a schedule for periodically exporting transactions and then importing them into my tracking software, or maybe I'll figure something else out. The experimentation is always fun Smiley

I've sent some of my DNotes Vault balance to a staking desktop wallet. I've been observing the staking behavior and have a few questions.

1. Does greater coin age increase the probability of that pile staking? I have two basic pile sizes. On the smaller end, those piles have not staked yet (wallet has been staking for just a few days). On the larger end, those piles have staked twice within a few hours of being deposited. So I'm wondering if the smaller piles gain weight as time goes on, or if it's just a pure lottery where odds of staking are a function only of pile size. Bottom line: it's clear pile size matters. Does pile age matter?

2. I see that when a pile stakes, it is split into two basically equal size piles. Is there an ideal pile size for staking? If so, will the wallet automatically maintain that pile size once reached, or would the user have to periodically manually consolidate piles to keep the odds of staking ideal?

3. This is more of a feature request, but record keeping would be made so much easier if the wallet transaction page had an "export to CSV" function.

4. When I hover over the activated staking indicator (green arrow), there is this message that says "your weight is xxx (equal to wallet balance), network weight is yyyy (something much larger)..." What exactly do those numbers mean? It seems to me that the network weight is a number far greater than the entire DNotes supply, yet my weight so far is just my coin balance.

5. What are the basic staking parameters for DNotes? How are things like coin balance, pile size, coin age (if applicable), desired APY, etc. all put together into the formula that governs staking?

I don't remember a part in the white paper that explains all this, and my questions are pretty technical. I've worked with a number of staking wallets to date and I'm trying to figure out how this one works.

Thanks!

For the staking related questions, one thing I want to clarify first. What are you reporting for your network weight?

3: There is! Click on File > Export from the transactions tab.

So all is functional, lets get it back up onto the exchange and start on a steem fork integration?

what is the proposal for steem fork integration?

We don't need to fork anymore! I implemented an integration of DVC and STEEM, so that you can merged mine DVC from your STEEM activity. Btw I'm really busy for the last couple months and haven't had time to catch up with this integration. I should get some free time soon to push things forward!

Could you repost the directions for this periodically to make them easy to find? I've been meaning to look into it, but life keeps happening Cheesy

On another note, what is the status with CoinsControl?

Well this never happened before....

Had taken my BTC and BCH wallets offline about three weeks ago and placed them back in the vault. Thought today to catch up with the blockchains in case they needed to be used quickly. Created a new BCH wallet and once it caught up with the blockchain to my great surprise there was 0.03 BCH in the wallet; having been sent to that address  January 6th of this year. Smiley

$20 USD by today's price and $200 USD at its all time high after the August fork. This seemed like a very good omen. Smiley

- Nova

That is awesome! I love those kind of surprises Smiley

Not to hijack by promoting a different coin, but I think you might enjoy this #cryptocurrencyeducationweek promotion. The DNotesEDU folks have hidden a number of DNotes private keys in their website as well as a few social media channels.

I also happen to think this is a brilliant way to get someone into your coin, as they would need the wallet in order to be able to use the found private keys. If DVC makes its big comeback, we could run a similar giveaway.

Anyway, all the info is on this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3281937.0

And I'm sweetening the deal a little bit here: https://steemit.com/dnotes/@wiser/cryptocurrency-education-week-is-on

Thanks for posting this, Chase. Actually watching the DNotes leadership go through this process has been very educational for me. I am glad to know more about this now, and it will definitely inform my investment decisions in the cryptocurrency space.

If you are looking for a trustworthy cryptocurrency project to invest in, find one that discloses all in a Regulation A+ mini-IPO!  Wink

The reasons ICOs won't use Regulation A+ mini-IPO:

#1 - $50 million is the limit on how much they can raise

#2 - Company must be based in the U.S. or Canada (oddly enough both countries have investor protection laws😉)

#3 - The company needs to file an offering statement with the SEC that includes the following information -  "material risks; plan of distribution; use of proceeds; description of the business operations; discussion of financial condition and results of operations (MD&A); disclosure about directors, executives and key employees; executive compensation; beneficial security ownership information; related party transactions; and two years of financial information. For a Tier 2 offering, that financial information must be prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP and audited by a PCAOB licensed auditor."

#4 - "The registration statement will also have numerous exhibits, such corporate records and material contracts and agreements."

#5 - "Particulars of the offering, such as what is being sold and at what price, need to be included. Key to this information is a reasonable valuation and rational use of proceeds. A company should demonstrate value through its financial statements and disclosures and establish that the intended use of proceeds will result in moving the business plan ahead and hopefully create increased value for the shareholders. Investors want to know that their money is being put to the highest and best use to result in return on investment. Repayment of debt or cashing out of series A investors is generally not a saleable use of proceeds. Looking for  $50 million for 30% of a pre-revenue start-up just isn’t going to do it! The company has to be prepared to show you, the investor, that it has a plan, management, vision and ability to carry out the business proposition it is selling.

#6 - And this should stop most of them from ever even thinking about applying:

No bad actors allowed - "The bad actor rules are there to protect investors and disqualify the company from using Regulation A+ if the company itself, its predecessor or an affiliate such as an officer, director, 20%-or-greater shareholder, promoter, broker or others directly involved in selling the offering have been subject to certain administrative orders, industry bars, injunctions involving certain securities law violations or certain specified criminal convictions all within the last 5 years or 10 years depending on the disqualifying event."

You have to be very careful. There are scammers, but also a lot of well meaning people with loud opinions and egos who don't necessarily know what would be best for you.

There is definitely a need for solid and objective cryptocurrency education. For that, I recommend DNotesEDU.com. This week, they are running all kinds of contests and giveaways, including hiding DNotes private keys on their website. There are a couple threads about it in the Beginners and Help section. Here is the main one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3281937

Even when they are not giving away DNotes, you can count on DNotesEDU being objective and factual. Their goal is to provide a place where people can really learn and not be scammed or in any way pressured into any particular "investments."

As far as who to trust, I personally don't care if they are a big name or not. I look at what they are actually accomplishing and if they are willing to share what they know. The people I most respect in this industry, many of them aren't well known yet, but they are building solid projects.

For good examples of solid cryptocurrency projects, check out DMD Diamond, DNotes and NEM. I believe those projects are all in it for the long haul and will accomplish great things, not to mention all the coins are way undervalued right now.

Disclosure: I hold coins in all the above projects... for good reason Smiley

The good people at DNotesEDU have launched Cryptocurrency Education Week. You can see more information on this thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3281937.msg34302377#msg34302377

There are a number of contests and giveaways for those who share posts on social media.

The really fun part is that they have hidden some private keys on their website DNotesEDU.com. The first ones to find the private keys, import them to their DNotes wallets and withdraw the funds to their own addresses get to keep the coins! They keep adding private keys, so even though some have been found already, your chances are still pretty good.

Happy private key hunting!

I'll try to get the word out here on Bitcoin Talk as well as on Steemit as well Smiley

Don't forget to support Cryptocurrency Education Week

Quote from Chase on April 9, 2018:

Cryptocurrency Education Week is global.

We want to include and help everyone learn about cryptocurrency.

There are contests going on right now on Twitter and Facebook that anyone can take part in. Aside from the prizes at the end of the week, we are also giving away DNotes (upgraded 2.0 / POS) to random people that have shared #CryptocurrencyEducationWeek.

There are still some keys left to find in this -

From DNotesEDU: To celebrate a successful launch we have hidden several private keys containing DNotes, somewhere on https://dnotesedu.com, https://facebook.com/dnotesedu and https://twitter.com/dnotesedu! First to find the keys, and move the DNotes to their personal address gets to keep them!

If you are unsure about how to import a private key, here are some very simple instructions: https://dnotesedu.com/digital-currency/dnotes#import_private_key

There will also be another contest announced shortly on social media.
