Please stop giving misinformation.

It will absolutely help vapourminer.  It is perfect for his use case, and the hardware cost is negligible.

https://www.blockstream.com/satellite/

OK vapourminer, the challenge is on. Let us know how it goes, I'm genuinely interested.

death_wish, do they actually have the hardware available? The info page talks about preorder and when I go to the hardware they do have available, it doesn't mention if it supports v2 or not.

The true is here in the USA she is 100% innocent until proven guilty. So he is correct and you simply are ignoring the law of the land.

Personally I would like to see and hear the trial as I want to see if other weasels are going down due to this trial.

And yeah she is certainly 'guilty' other than by defined by USA law.

You know there was a trial, right?

By the time we go from “Bitcoin is for everyone”, to “Bitcoin is for well-off people in rich countries”, to “Bitcoin is only for people with high-quality urban/suburban Internet access”, there is not much “everyone” left.

TIL 6MB/hour is high-quality urban/suburban internet access.
364  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 26, 2022, 09:56:19 PM

raises hand.

my internet sucks majorly bad and it would take months, many months, to dl from genesis. my inet is so bad and the full blockchain stored locally so important i have it backed up so many ways (raidz2, raid5, portables drives, internal drives i rotate etc, all stored in many places) it borders on ridiculous.

help me obi won musk, starlink is my only hope.

As implemented, it wouldn't help you. Sorry. Could throw a microSD in the post, maybe.

Have you ever lived in a situation where downloading the entire Bitcoin blockchain from the Internet, and keeping up with blocks, would be cost-prohibitive in terms of bandwidth?  It is not a rare situation.  Not a corner case.  I think that the worldwide majority of people are probably in that situation.

Satellite TV dishes are ubiquitous.  Surprising and disturbing, but true.  They can be repurposed for this, with a few parts that fit into a poverty-level budget.  Now, at least, you can have the BYOB security of consensus-validating the blockchain yourself.  To make transactions, use your mobile data connection that has kbps speed, and costs money you can’t afford billed by the kilobyte.  Although it is not ideal from a decentralization viewpoint, it gets your foot in the door.

Still makes no sense?

You would still have to download the entire blockchain if you wanted it as the transmission is only for new blocks. It is broadcast only so if you have a block with corrupted data, there is no way to request a re-transmission so you need an alternative method to obtain them anyway. Their transmission footprint means that most of the world has no access to it anyway. Much of the third world has better wireless connectivity than the first because they didn't start out with POTS and have been rolling out state-of-the art stuff from the go and they can use cheap off-the-shelf equipment and not have to install expensive satellite equipment.

Yes, it makes no sense. As evidenced by the fact nobody is using it. There is no market for it because it's poorly conceived.

Let's not forget than nobody is supposed to be transacting on the Blockchain anyway because there is not enough space for their transactions and they're supposed to be using convoluted second-layer protocols.

Everyone here will love Blockstream,

Not everyone.

their Blockstream Satellite project which is essentially altruism (not only B2C, but made to help poor people in poor countries use Bitcoin!),

A hype project that has helped nobody and makes no sense.

well—where does Blockstream make their money?  I don’t know their internal structure or their financials (none of my business!), but I plausibly guess that their bread and butter is Liquid, and their Lightning infrastructure projects, and their hosted mining—all B2B, and/or for very wealthy customers.

VC capital. None of their stuff makes money AFAIK (I believe they do some mining but that's not their core business). More people should be asking questions like this.

Nothing is going to happen before the next halving which is scheduled for May-June 2024.
Do not have any false hopes like those Crypto guys on Twitter.

Well, the effects of the halving do tend to get priced in a bit so we should see a mild run-up in advance but that's a long way away yet as you say.
368  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 26, 2022, 04:14:01 AM

I don't know if they were daydreaming. Of course, BTC can potentially go $250K or more in the future. That doesn't mean it will Boom in a few months. LOL.

Eventually, sure. And probably sooner than most would think. We're in the doldrums for at least another year though, I think. Healing is needed, bad memories need to fade, confidence needs to return.
369  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 26, 2022, 03:24:39 AM
Bitcoin will get to $250K “by late 2022 or early 2023" says Tim Draper.

Bullshit.

This is the short opportunity of a lifetime.

That's proudhon's way of telling you ALL IN!!!  Cool

Did you hack Chartbuddy, slowly deleting his posts, from oldest to most recent?  Grin
Now you're probably asking this, just to try to move yourself out of scope as a suspect?  Wink
A clever move...

I did delete a bunch of posts a while back because they were linking to nonexistent images. That was a few years ago though. And I occasionally get notices about posts being deleted by mods that I get no explanation for but I haven't seen much of them recently either.
372  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 22, 2022, 01:41:41 PM
Who keeps deleting WO posts?  Things are jumping around—again and again.  At this rate, WO’s page-count will soon dip below the Bitcoin price without any recovery in the latter.

I've considered writing a deletion tracker (mostly around the time of the fork). Might have to take another look at that.

Why?  How is that different from any other big-game hunting?  (Other than having an exoskeleton that couldn’t be scaled up without either being distorted to dysfunctionality, or collapsing under its own weight.)

The limit for insects is actually due to their lack of respiratory system. They have been a lot bigger in times of higher oxygen.

You guys should buy some XRP. Not much, maybe a few hundred or a few thousand. You will need it if you want to travel.    Roll Eyes    Roll Eyes

I have some XRP somewhere. If I ever remember the username and password and if the online wallet hadn't been taken down. And if I actually gave a damn.

ETH did a similar thing. But that was with ETH I bought. Though I had the username and password for that and was able to use a version of the wallet stored on archive.org.

Then there's bitcoin which had a personal wallet available from day 1. Clear winner.

Quote
The report was commissioned by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, and the work was done by the software security research company Trail of Bits.

"It's been taken for granted that the blockchain is immutable and decentralized, because the community says so," says Guido.

But in practice, he says, these networks have evolved in ways that concentrate power in the hands of certain people or companies, including the large pools of "miners" whose computers earn virtual currency by maintaining the blockchains.

Guido's team calls these potential situations "unintended centralities" — situations in which someone gains leverage over the decentralized system, creating opportunities for tampering with the record of who owns what.

Clearly we need that tiny group of enlightened, altruistic people known as the government to step in.  Roll Eyes

strawbs currently has 814 activity.  Since he now has passed the merit threshold, his account is predestined to reach Legendary rank at an activity level known only to the administrators.  Some vague statements have been made about how this is actually calculated; I forgot what and where years ago, due to apathy.

Ah, I though that was a merit thing, not activity.

Well thanks gents. I’m not exactly a prolific poster, with multiple lengthy absences, so maybe it’ll take me a full ten years to get there!

I read the trigger was somewhere up to 1030 but you're still there so I think I was mislead.

I was never attracted to owning gold—too heavy, too difficult to transport, too risky to store at home or in a deposit box, not easily verifiable in terms of purity, very difficult and costly to secure. Bitcoin solves all that and more. It pays to use a non-material store of value that can be stored securely on a piece of paper or even in one's neurons.

Gold is great for its practical uses, though—contact/PCB plating in the electronics industry is one.

I've considered that having a few small denomination coins (1/10 oz or so) around for if things get really bad but definitely metallurgy and electroplating have got so much better that hard-to-detect fakes would likely be a problem if things got that bad. Gold does have the benefit that people understand (or think they do) what it is. Paper is right out, of course.

Do you know how warren buffet like investors makes a hell lot of money? They buy small stocks or real estate when the market is declining and sell it when it's strong. The rule is this simple. Then they buy bigger stock or real estate. They start small and increase that same money through investment. They are billionaires not because they only keep buying stock and hold it. No one has an unlimited bucket of money. They are billionaires because they know how to reinvest.

Nah, they take a position and then pay politicians to make sure that position is profitable. The small-time investor is just grist for the mill. They'll pump your costs up with inflation then take your wealth when the bubble bursts. And on the rare occasion it looks like you might be stealing a march on them, they'll call up their friends and have them close down trading.
