Someone who can't shut down a site clearly doesn't own it, wouldn't you say?

So you're saying the US government owns this site? That's a pretty non-answer you've given.

Logic fail.

Would it be fair to say that you own it, but there are others who have administrator privileges and certain steps have been taken to require other people who work for you to agree before a very select few actions can be taken, correct?

No.
3622  Other / Meta / Re: Are the mods getting paid from this forum? on: June 15, 2013, 06:37:31 PM
You asked who owned the forum, and I gave you a detailed answer. Someone who can't shut down a site clearly doesn't own it, wouldn't you say? No one person can shut down the forum, so I like to say that no one owns the forum. Alternatively, you could maybe say that the forum is owned by a corporation-like entity with a very unusual structure.
3623  Other / Meta / Re: Are the mods getting paid from this forum? on: June 15, 2013, 06:27:13 PM
Who owns it?

Depends on your definition of ownership. Different resources are controlled by different people. Private Internet Access has ultimate control of the server. Sirius owns the domain. A lot of the money is managed in accordance with the Treasury Agreements, which defines a somewhat more complex organizational structure, though these agreements don't rule the entire forum. I coordinate it all, but I have no ultimate, binding authority over anything except the bitcoins that I hold (and I'd like to reduce this). No one person can permanently shut down the forum.
3624  Other / Meta / Re: Are the mods getting paid from this forum? on: June 15, 2013, 05:07:36 PM
The forum is no longer associated with MtGox in any way.

I can't confirm that he was hacked. He should email me.
3626  Other / Meta / Re: Are the mods getting paid from this forum? on: June 15, 2013, 05:31:21 AM
As far as upgrades go, theymos has done pretty well so far. Most recently, he added the trust system. He should seriously be paying himself just for that, but so far he really hasn't been* (as far as I know?).

I do increase my "quality score" in the mod payments algorithm to account for this.
3627  Other / Meta / Re: Are the mods getting paid from this forum? on: June 15, 2013, 05:29:28 AM
these advertising campaigns that are earmarked "creation of good forum software".

The ad auctions say, "In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software and for other useful purposes... ."

I'm curious as to why the ad money resides in various wallets, moved many times to perhaps cloak its origins.

Bitcoin transaction data isn't meaningful by default. I would need to take extra steps to make the transactions easy to understand, and I'm not going to do that. It's all transparent, though.

Total BTC received:  6499.60971212
BTC in my cold storage address: 3043.20940098
BTC in treasurers' cold storage addresses: 3250
Approximate expenses (total received - BTC in cold storage): 206.40031114
Actual expenses (from my records): 225.9696519

Expenses breakdown:
- Hosting: 27.96617
- Forum improvement: 40
- BTC storage: 21.9
- Mod payments: 136.1034819

This doesn't include any income since the last mod payment, and there may be minor floating-point errors that I don't care to account for.
3628  Other / Meta / Re: Will bitcointalk go public? on: June 14, 2013, 06:54:32 PM
A traditional share arrangement isn't possible because the forum is not-for-profit. I could maybe see temporary bonds if the forum ever needed a lot of money quickly, but this is unlikely because there's already a lot of money in reserve.
3629  Other / Meta / Re: Are the mods getting paid from this forum? on: June 14, 2013, 02:02:05 PM
I'm surprised that no one noticed this before now. Almost all of the moderators have addresses in their Bitcoin Address profile fields, and these addresses receive obvious, regular sendmany payments from addresses owned by me or the forum...

Moderators are not employees. They are not required to "behave professionally," and they don't need to help you with anything. The payments are a form of thanks for past actions, and they do not establish any future obligations for the forum or moderators.

John K. got $1,149. How do you sign up to be a mod!

Report many posts accurately, and write good posts. Mods are added infrequently, and only when needed. Also, as you can see, few mods make anywhere near that much.
3630  Other / Meta / Re: I would like a name change. on: June 13, 2013, 03:54:49 PM
For me it's not an editable box

Only Donators/VIPs can change it themselves. Other people need to PM me.
3631  Other / Meta / Re: I would like a name change. on: June 13, 2013, 03:36:29 PM
You can change the custom title as a VIP, but not your username unless I'm missing something.

You can change your display name in your account settings. You can't change the username that you use to login with.
3632  Other / Off-topic / Re: PS4 vs Xbox One? on: June 12, 2013, 07:15:36 PM
Probably neither. Steam is very cheap in convenient. I guess I might get one in a year or two if the exclusives are really good.

I wonder when/if emulators will become available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. That'd be very convenient. I wish that Microsoft and Sony would release their own emulators and sell their old games for like $5 each.
3633  Other / Meta / Re: Reserved Posts on: June 11, 2013, 07:13:19 PM
If you run into the post size limit through edits, I can create an extra post for you below the first post. No need to worry too much about this.
3634  Other / Meta / Re: why dont the moderators care ? on: June 11, 2013, 07:07:38 PM
Also I've NEVER seen a mod edit a post, or warn someone. I'm all for freedom of speech but cussing and swearing and threatening ... why is this allowed ? Why have mods at all then ?

Then the mods are doing a good job. Good moderation is invisible.

Some insight on how I use the report system: I get the report emails and follow the links to the offending posts to check. I rarely visit the Reports page, so I surely have dealt with both accurate and inaccurate reports yet not marking them as such. I'm not sure if the forum software detects that a deletion by a moderator took place and marks the report as accurate or not, but phpbb doesn't work that way, so I'm not expecting SMF to...

Deletions are detected, but not moves, etc.

If a report has already been handled by another moderator, it should be marked as Handled.
3635  Other / Off-topic / Re: Encryption question on: June 10, 2013, 02:31:25 AM
Encrypt the data with a random key using symmetric crypto (ie AES). For each person who can get access, encrypt to their public key:
- The random key used with the symmetric crypto.
- A unique access key which the server also knows in a database.

The downloader first downloads the public-key-encrypted file. They send the access key to the server, which allows them to download the larger encrypted file if the access key is OK. Then they can decrypt it using the data key.

To revoke access, delete their public-key-encrypted files and remove their access keys from the database.
3636  Other / Off-topic / Re: Encryption question on: June 10, 2013, 01:57:01 AM
If you send someone some ciphertext that they can decrypt, then they'll always be able to decrypt that ciphertext.

It's easy to remove a recipient from an OpenPGP encrypted message. Just remove the packet with their encrypted session key. I don't know how you would do this with any PGP tool, though.
3637  Other / Meta / Re: [REQUEST] Desktop notification of PMs on: June 09, 2013, 07:56:04 PM
You'll surpass me if you keep that up. Smiley I have 434 pages of PMs. I never delete PMs, though.
3638  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace trust on: June 09, 2013, 07:46:11 PM
I think I'll hide untrusted feedback by default using Javascript. It'll be like:

Quote
Trusted feedback

...

Untrusted feedback

Click here to show Untrusted feedback

If I do it this way, I'll add an option to always show untrusted feedback in your profile settings.
3639  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 85 on: June 08, 2013, 02:09:41 PM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software and for other useful purposes, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Seven of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts at least 7 days starting from when I put it up. (However, if you look at the ad history you'll see that ads frequently get 1-2 extra days, but this is random and definitely not guaranteed.)

Stats

Ad blocking

Hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression counts for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all seven slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 7 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 7 slots. If the two highest bids are 7 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 6 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.50.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.
