Good answers! Props on your reading comprehension. 😁
422  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Cold Staking a 'must have feature' moving forward for all PoS? on: April 09, 2017, 09:58:50 PM
I think it is a necessary feature.

There are a lot if people that don't want to fool with running a node 24/7, and the insecurity that comes with that.

Sure, it leads to centralization of staking, but I think security is more important. The chain is better off with having the extra coins staked in a more centralized manner than having them not staked at all.

It will also help towards creating truely deflationary cryptocurrencies, which I have been a big proponent of lately. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1858954

Inflation creates massive downward pressure on the free market, negatively effecting the value of cryptocurrencies. Most people buy cryptocurrencies as an investment, so I think eliminating this inflation is ideal.
423  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Storj (SJCK) vs. Siacoin (SC) - Discussion on: April 09, 2017, 09:35:03 PM
I have been a longtime supporter of data storage tokens, such as MAID, SJCX, and SC. I think they are a great idea, and can reduce storage prices compared to centralized competitors that need to pay for data center space (which is very expensive). However, at the present time I am not really impressed with the state of these coins.

1. MAID seems to be in a perpetual vaporware state. Who knows if it will ever come to fruition...

2. SJCX and SC are both operational, but there is little to no demand for the services. I recently (the past couple day) looked into a few ways to profitably utilize my extra hard drive space. The amount of demand for SJCX and SC storage space left me quite uninterested in these projects. Maybe demand will pick up and slowly grow over time, but I think it may be years (closer to 5 to 10 years) before they gain traction- if they do at all. So, I have taken them out of my portfolio, as I think they will stay at or under their current valuations for some time. The demand just isn't there for these services.

I decided to mine Burst with my extra HD rather than fool with Storj or Siacoin. I am only expecting to make something like $3.50 a month (the HD is just under 2 TB), but it is free money and I might as well do it because it doesn't use much power and I don't need as much storage space as I have.
424  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: CH (CoinHoarder) Index on: April 09, 2017, 09:19:35 PM
This would make for quite an interesting game, wouldn't it. Suggestion:

Let's open a thread, where everyone has a given timeframe (let's say a week) to post a hypothetical portfolio of – whatever, 1 BTC worth of coins (maximum number 12 coins, less are allowed). After one year (and maybe at some points in time in between), we check who made the most plus and who didn't*.

Why not simply buy and hold, you ask?

Mostly  for entertainment purposes, of course.

And because this would be the place to make gutsy make or break bets you wouldn't do in real life.

If you want to get stuff out of it, feel free to place some bets (or buy your picks) Smiley

*There would be two ways of calculating it:

1.: We check prices after exactly one year

2.: We assume, that everyone was smart enough to sell at the peak, so we take the highest price within the given timeframe (I like this version better)

 – both either against BTC or $

That would be great! I would be willing to participate. When I made this post, I hoped at least a few others might join in. It would certainly make it more fun, and I would be interested to see what others would put in their portfolio.

I already realized I made a mistake, as I meant to only put 2% in Monero and the remaining 2% somewhere else. Oh well, I think Monero is decently more promising than some of the other 2% coins where I can justify the extra 2%!  Grin

#2 would make things more complicated. I guess I prefer #1
425  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: April 09, 2017, 07:17:56 PM
worthless even on hour/day one of a freshly released coin?

I don't know of any decent SHA256 alt coins, or any that are planned unfortunately.

I had originally posited when ASICs quickly became more and more efficient that some decent SHA256 alt coins would be developed, and allow slower Asics to remain profitable.

However, that never happened. I think the ASIC manufacturers building large farms for much cheaper than the consumer, and all of the scams involving ASIC manufacturers, severely shifted the alt coin community's opinion of ASICs and SHA256. Their opinion on ASICs was already pretty dismal to begin with.

As a result, all decently speculatable alt coins that have been conceived since have decided to go with a different consensus algorithm or various forms of PoS algorithms.
426  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTR] vTorrent - Share with freedom | 2FA | HD | @Bittrex on: April 09, 2017, 05:06:45 PM

That is cool, but I would not utilize any tracker service (decentralized or not) that does not have the ability to rate torrents and uploaders. That is just asking for a virus, and there would be a lot of bandwidth wasting downloading low quality content.
427  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTR] vTorrent - Share with freedom | 2FA | HD | @Bittrex on: April 09, 2017, 05:00:36 PM
The "meh" was directed at the ad hominem that was (and still is) being directed at me. Calling me lazy, misinformed, only interested in short term profits, etc... is this how you guys treat new community members? Some sort of hazing?  Roll Eyes

Sure, you are entitled to your opinion, as misinformed as it is
...
For you to say "meh" to a one-of-a-kind technology project tells me you are a speculator only interested in short-term profits.

It looks as if I am not misinformed, as no one knows exactly how the incentives will work. As far as how the incentives work, I know as much as you guys do... nothing.

We don't know finer details because they haven't been released yet.
...
you came in here dismissing this project outright without proper research.
Contradict yourself much? There is nothing to research, as the details are unknown. You want me to read 213 forum pages to look for something that doesn't exist? I value my time much more than that.

If you knew me (which you don't), then you would know I am less interested in short term profits, and more interested in cryptocurrencies that can grow over a long period of time. Generally, I buy and hold cryptocurrencies for years, so that makes you no better than I. You cannot insult me based on something you admit to doing yourself.

I think there's more money to be made in moonshot projects like this, and the reason I bought in early.
428  Economy / Digital goods / [Accepting Offers] Domain: Decentralized.tech on: April 09, 2017, 04:25:00 PM
I will entertain offers for a domain I purchased a year and a half ago.

I bought it for a project, but never followed through with it.

Domain: Decentralized.tech

No need to submit lowball offers. I would rather hang onto it in that case. Smiley
429  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: CH (CoinHoarder) Index on: April 09, 2017, 04:17:08 PM
very interesting long term portfolio, i'll make sure to follow it.

one question though:
why are you reporting the amounts in USD instead of BTC? majority of the altcoins and most of your list don't even have a USD market and we can only buy them with BTC and price is also determined based on BTC.

what i mean is, when their price goes down and bitcoin price goes up, their USD value may stay the same and be misleading.
for example X is worth 0.001BTC equal to $1.17 at $1170 bitcoin value.
if X gets dumped down to 0.000936BTC and bitcoin goes up to $1250, X is still worth $1.17
so your portfolio shows no loss.

but in reality you have lost 0.000064BTC per coin or $0.08 (or better say missed on that profit).

I will add a field to compare the performance of the fund to Bitcoin's performance on the next update.

Cheers Smiley

sell and buy cheaper is a good strategy

I agree.

It is a sell now, but after the price corrects it is an easy buy!
433  Economy / Services / Re: Need an Idea for a school project - Paying btc - 0.01 BTC on: April 09, 2017, 04:29:16 AM
Imbed an IOT chip into your dog or cat than can give you vital health information, be sure they are being cared for when they are kennelled and you are on vacation (track sleep, stress, pain, hunger and thirst), and help you locate them if they go missing.

Car manufacturers could put model-specific chips in cars to cheaply and instantly let them know if there has been a recall for a vehicle. Have a recall warning light or notification. It would be better than the snail mail way they send out the notices currently.

Put IOT-connected sensors in your potted plants and garden, which would notify you if it needs water or nutrients. You should be able to enter what kind of plant it is, so the app knows what nutrients and how much or little water it needs.

Embed IOT-connected chips in grocery packaging, which would allow you to pull up exactly what you have in your pantry, recipes that combine the things you have in your pantry, the nutritional information of everything, and automatically create a grocery shopping list determined by a pre-set list of what you normally buy and what you have left in your pantry.
434  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Litecoin will soon be available on CoinBase nationwide. on: April 09, 2017, 04:05:49 AM
Straight from the Director of Engineering at Coinbase:
https://twitter.com/SatoshiLite/status/850529675835195392

He did not say WHEN they would be adding it to Coinbase though, just that it would be added. It could be soon, or it could be a year or two down the road. The thread title claiming it will happen soon is misleading. Not to mention all the other rumours about it being added over the past couple years, and it still hasn't happened yet.

It has been obvious since they added Ethereum that Litecoin would eventually be added as well, but who knows how long it will be until they actually do...
435  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTR] vTorrent - Share with freedom | 2FA | HD | @Bittrex on: April 09, 2017, 03:47:20 AM
Meh, I was just trying to understand how the incentives work and how much inflation there will be. No need to get defensive or combative. I am entitled to my opinion. Create a moderated thread if you want an echo chamber.

But to be honest, no one seems to really know how the incentives and inflation will work exactly, so I will wait to pass final judgement on it once those details are fully disclosed. I still think that if it works how some of you think it will, then it is unlikely to be as widely adopted as you guys seem to believe.

Nonetheless, I have thrown some change at a few VTR tokens anyways. Good luck to us!
436  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: CH (CoinHoarder) Index on: April 09, 2017, 03:26:46 AM
This is interesting $100 experiment. Are you holding them in a single exchange or in multiple offline wallets?

To be clear, this is just for fun... to see how the index performs. Although my portfolio closely resembles this, I do not have exact percentages of anything, nor do I have exactly a $100 bankroll.

To maintain exact percentages would be too big of a PITA, especially when adding more FIAT capital into the portfolio. Maybe when Iconomi comes out, and if the fund is performing well, then I will create an exact replica of the fund on there because it will be much easier to maintain.

I prefer cold wallets for storage, unless something needs staking to earn interest.
437  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][Blocknet] The internet of blockchains | XBridge | true cross-chain P2P on: April 09, 2017, 03:03:20 AM
Hi,

Can someone explain to me in simple bullet points how the decentralized exchange works?

I would like to add it to my thread (The DEX Thread). Actually, I already have added it, but I would like to elaborate on it there. I could not find a whitepaper.

Blocknet
- Status: Alpha
- Website: http://blocknet.co/
- BCT Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=829576.0
- A peer-to-peer protocol between nodes that connects different blockchains
- More to come...
Weaknesses:
- To be announced after I understand how it works...

As of 5/8/2017:
Analysis: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1861499.msg18934464#msg18934464

As of 4/8/2017:

Reasoning:
10% of portfolio or greater = Established cryptocurrency, very likely to grow in value
4% of portfolio = Deflationary tokens with utility which will create (at least minimal) demand, plus Monero
2% of portfolio = Has good potential of growth

How do you like the coins in my portfolio?
How do you like the percentages of my portfolio?
Follow along as my portfolio skyrockets or plummets! I will update this monthly.
This index is meant to be a low maintenance long-term investment.

Feel free to post your own index, and we can have a friendly competition! Smiley
For the sake of keeping things simple, use a $100 bankroll too!

In future updates I will add comparisons, such as the performance of the index fund versus a 100% BTC investment, a standard savings account, the US dollar, etc.

I do plenty of research to find valuable undervalued projects, but the way you guys are describing the incentive system, it is not worth my time to do the research on this one. It will never catch on or become popular if leeches have to pay, or if too much inflation is used to reward uploaders/seeders. Either way, this project is doomed. Maybe that's another reason for the low interest and market cap...
