hmmm, I see this coin also uses the TOR network. When making a payment with SpectreCoin, is the following visible?

1. The IP the wallet is running on
2. Is the transaction visible on the Spectre coin blockchain?

1. Your IP is only known to an entry node of the Tor network. Every member on the Spectre network only communicates via its Tor hidden service address. So No.
2. If you use a public transaction: Yes. If you use a stealth transaction using ring signatures (which is not operable at this moment because too few people use this feature), then No.
562  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 11, 2017, 04:47:54 PM
You gave a pretty well rounded answer, thank you for that.  Though, it, too, seems to address device risk more than the risk to reward ratio of keeping the wallet open for staking 24/7 (in the context of a device that is kept connected to the internet 24/7 anyway, for reasons other than staking).  If there is a hack attack or malware infection, seems to me that can happen at any time that the wallet is staking, even if it is only staking, say, one hour per day.  And, although obviously the risk from hacking or malware increases the longer the wallet is kept open, so do the staking rewards - hence why the question is about risk/reward ratio, not just increased risk.

The only difference between staking and not staking is that it's connected to the internet. I addressed the probability of being "hacked" via the internet, which is pretty low IMO, as long as no other services are running on your system that would be prone to security issues. It really depends on your system then.

About the only thing you mentioned that seemed to me to pose increased risk vs. reward, is the possibility of the device, with the wallet on it, being stolen; the risk of burglary is certainly higher at certain times of the day (or night).  Though, during staking the wallet is unlocked for staking only, and if I am not mistaken, the pass phrase would still be needed in order to access the funds on the wallet.  Is there a possibility that a thief could quickly bypass the pass phrase through hacking?  Seems to me that if one keeps a recent copy of the wallet.dat on file (on a different device or medium, stored in a separate location), one's funds would be pretty secure even in the event that the device is stolen without an interruption of the power supply, even while the wallet is unlocked for staking - but I am no tech expert by any means.

Sounds about right. If you use a strong password to encrypt your wallet, then local attacks are negligible.
563  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 11, 2017, 01:50:06 PM
My question was whether there is an increased risk to reward for leaving a wallet (not device) open for staking 24/7 vs. only part time.  I realize now that my question was not relevant to the original quote, as it does not pertain to the risk of keeping the device connected to the internet.  The proper context for my question is, if the device is kept connected to the internet 24/7 anyway (which mine is), is there higher risk to reward associated with keeping the wallet open for staking 24/7 vs. only part time?  (And if so, how?)

I think I answered this at some point. Is there anything you're still missing from that answer?

The thing is, development does not only mean writing new code that could be committed. Often it is about debugging code, experimenting, refactoring. Things that cannot be easily committed until everything fits together. The "zero balance" bug that is currently being worked on is a typical example of such case.

I guess it's time to accumulate ESP

Yep. Finally some good news!  Cheesy Bought another 120M for my bag. Let's eat those sell walls! Wink 4-5 sat is a steal now that things seem to start moving again.

Is is possible to stake under Linux without using a gui wallet? That would be great, because I would safe a lot of energy when shutting down my desktop computer. I also have a virtual server which is idling most of the time. If it's possible. Could someone please share a hudide or how to for accomplishing that?

Yes. I've explained it earlier in this thread. Wink See below.

Is there a guide out there for staking with an Unix operating system via bash in the background? I don't want to run a desktop PC or emulate a virtual machine for running a normal GUI wallet.

This way I would safe energy, because I could shut down my computer at night and migrate staking tasks to my root server which is is idling most of its time.

You probably want to use a terminal multiplexer of your choice (see https://askubuntu.com/questions/8653/how-to-keep-processes-running-after-ending-ssh-session).

Then build spectrecoind using the instructions found in doc/build-unix.txt in the Github repository (https://github.com/spectrecoin/spectre) and start it. Afaik it should be staking by default if you keep it running.

He has also lot other things to accomplish.

What things for example? Having some more info available would be helpful in order to estimate the current situation correctly. What kind of problems does he have, that he doesn't even have the time or motivation to explain it to the community?  Huh

How much did they overall collect during the ICO?

In here 1 % owns 99% , very risky, since the whales can dump and exit any time. BUT ! Bitcoin is the same, 1% owns 97% of coins, and so far, few investors see a problem with it.

That's nonsense, look: https://chainz.cryptoid.info/xspec/#!rich It's a completely normal distribution.

Another thing is that, since developers are trying to keep their anonymity (same like Satoshi did), they can leave project any time ...

Devs can also leave if their name is known. History has shown that they can. There are no obligations to any person to do development work on an open source project.

And to the website, I like its clean, I like its not using javascript and other things that can spoil your location and IP, But I would like to see more informations about the technology, about PoSv3 how many tx/s, how tor and obfs is working, something about team. You know - more informations - more serious its going to look, same applies to exchanges. Spectre needs some good Public Relations!.

Good point, you're not the first who said that. But do you think this is more important than fixing the zero balance bug? More important than fixing wallet crashes? More important than getting a MacOS wallet? It's all done by JBG, and it has low priority right now, so it will be done at a later point.
569  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 06, 2017, 08:36:30 PM
Staking on a stealth adress would be a very amazing feature.

Yes. I'm pretty sure it will happen sooner or later. A colleague of JBG will join, first for just a month. He's a cryptographer. Maybe we can make him stay  Wink

Leaving a device connected 24/7 is risky

This is not the first time I have seen this claim, with regard to staking.  Can someone please explain the reasoning behind this?

Because, even if there is risk associated with having a wallet open for staking (despite it being password protected against hacking), that risk is present any time the wallet is open for staking, even if just part time.  While I understand that the less time a device is connected and a wallet is staking, the lower the risk, I also understand that the reward is likewise lower.

So, what really matters is the risk to reward ratio.  Does that ratio increase when the wallet is left open for staking 24/7, and if so, how?

That's a very good question. It depends on your attack scenario. Computer stolen? Server compromised through a Windows update? Remote NTP exploit? The last two would be doomsday-like global scenarios. The latter risk does increase with time if you keep your computer alone, but if you encrypt your wallet and the power gets plugged, they will not be able to access it. Another case would be that someone comes to your house and tries to access the running system, in that case locking the screen with a password should help against most attackers. Personally I don't see any reason security-wise to not keep my home server running 24/7, and have the wallet unlocked.
570  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 06, 2017, 02:24:33 PM

  • You cannot stake with a stealth address (yet).

obviously even an old member could get you the wrong answer.
you can stake with a stealth address as long as this address is not the stealth address that you are using in the "PRIVATE" account.

Actually you are right, coins are not "stored" in a stealth address. Either you send coins to it and it creates a new public address, in which case you can stake. Or you send ring signature tokens to it, in that case you can't and it will be displayed as private balance. Thanks for pointing out.  Smiley
571  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 06, 2017, 01:42:12 PM
You also have to unlock the wallet for staking. Or at least I did. I still can't find my private key. Just my address.
Can you stake with with stealth? How does this affect the public viewed network weight?
Why is the staking reward higher than the 5% for some and others don't received any reward at all? Only the big dogs, with lots of xspec already, can receive staking rewards? Small guys gets nothing without taking the biggest risk(open wallet) This is seeming more and more iffy.
Seriously, where is the security layers?. Yes there is TOR and OBFS4, and eventually mature ring sig. But you don't even have a a password on the wallet without much digging. Anyone could see the info you must display when staking.

Maybe I'm just being a total newb. But this coin has to be new user friendly if it's going to compete with the big dogs. It's a secure, stealth coin, with good tech. But Tech is almost useless if most users can't figure it out. Those who have the knowhow are already using other, older coins.

We need a tutorial! Make it so easy you can't not use it!

The problem is: This is exactly the same for ALL coins. In every POS coin I have seen, there are newbies asking "how do I stake, what are the requirements for staking" etc. The answers are always the same, because the concept, proof of stake, is always the same. It would only require hitting Google and getting some knowledge about what is happening here, e.g. what POS is! You cannot expect people to explain to you how to drive a car, if you don't know what a gearshift is. And people are not asking how to drive a car here, they are asking "how do I drive this car?". The same way as you drive any other car man. Maybe try learning about cars first before you buy one.  Roll Eyes

Sorry this is not meant to be unfriendly or disrespectful. Maybe I will add a section about it to the Wiki article at one point.

To answer your Specte-specific questions:

  • You cannot stake with a stealth address (yet).Whether you can stake or not depends on the type of balance, either public or private. See the post below.
  • Yes, the password only protects access to your private key, not the entire wallet (yet).
572  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 06, 2017, 08:53:58 AM
Is there a staking guide?

1. Buy a lot of coins
2. Open the wallet
3. Deposit the coins to your wallet
4. Wait.

Cool
573  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 05, 2017, 09:41:30 PM
@cryptohunter

I posted my public address for everyone to see and also said how much I bought at which price. I have nothing to hide and am completely transparent about who I am. It's really important to me that both yourself and the rest of the community do not believe this is a scam and just an ICO that no one really gave a chance. So if you need any further information you can see this 'fools' face anytime you wish. Until then, Spectrecoin is moving on with or without you.

IMO you have a completely false understanding of privacy. The "nothing to hide" argument has been the top argument for surveillance for ages, because it implies that everyone who is left not giving up their privacy does have something to hide, thus making the use of a human right look suspicious. For this reason, it is super important to not give away your privacy in order to not make it look suspicious if someone else does. That's one of the main reasons we need anonymous currencies to begin with, so I have no idea what you are doing here?  Huh
574  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 05, 2017, 07:11:46 PM
So XSPEC is like Monero + POS + TOR? Is this correct or I did not understand it very well? If that is the case then this is a really unique coin.

Not quite. Wink At the moment, Monero is "more" than Spectre technology-wise. Its anonymity features are more mature. You can find a comparison with Monero here: http://coinwiki.info/en/SpectreCoin#Monero

Hasn't this coin been around for much longer and is this a new thread? Or am I confusing it with something else?

Yes, I explained it on the first page and also gave a link to the previous thread.
576  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Spectrecoin[XSPEC] TOR+OBFS4, Ring Sig, Stealth! on: September 05, 2017, 10:13:24 AM
"transact without supervision by big brother"
This is also illegal, incase you didn't know.

I agree with you. Just because something is illegal it doesn't mean that it's wrong. Bypassing the Chinese firewall is illegal in China. Their laws are not less valid than ours. If Spectre is going to be used on darknet sites, that's a good thing IMO. Darknet sites themselves are not illegal, and they shouldn't be. You can use any currency to do illegal things, but that's not our responsibility then.

These are not walls of text they are simply sentences helping you understand your greater issues with this project. You don;t wish to accept his because you are one of the whales here. Sorry about that but your fear of the truth is very telling.

Your post wasn't deleted because of its length or its content. It was deleted for containing a quote of a quote of a quote of a quote of a quote, each of them in full length. Beachguy warned about this multiple times that he would delete such posts. You still did it, so you got a warning, and afterward it was deleted. The right way to do it is to select the part you are referring to, like I am doing in this post. It's basic forum / email usage and should be commonsense.

Your thoughts may be right that getting a better distribution would help. But if whales would distribute their coins to multiple addresses, the problem would be "solved" as well from an outside perspective. You cannot tell people to give away money for free, that's not how this world works, unfortunately!  Cheesy The distribution will improve over time as the whales are taking their profits one by one and leaving.

Could Spectre have Masternode feature?

Probably not. Masternodes with POS just further contribute to centralization of the control over the network. We try to stay as decentralized as possible, where everybody can support the network by staking/forging.
