... interesting theory. Wonder if the CIA had him suicided then when he refused to cooperate backdooring BTC in the early days? Then got Gavin installed instead  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

... hint: if Leonard (7 letters) Sassaman (8 letters) ==> Satoshi (7 letters) Nakamoto (8 letters) is the key defining transform, what's the code?

Well I have been in similar discussion with friends who still didn’t accept Bitcoin yet. So one time we discussed that it’s a fact tha a SME (coronal mass ejection) is a serious threat to humanity. And if it happens it will be a complete blackout for days, months or may be years. In such a mass disaster what will happen to Bitcoin?? when this whole Bitcoin echo system needs so much energy and constant internet connection  how Bitcoin will survive? Whereas paper money or gold can still be valued and used in such scenarios like nothing happened.

... totally depends on the strength, duration and direction of the solar flare.

The sun does not appear to have superflares, or at least that we know of, and appears to be very quiet when compared to other similar sun-like stars. Which probably explains existence of life on Earth as relatively unique.  Past performance is no guarantee of future outcomes and all that though. A superflare direct hit on Earth would probably wipe most all life and humanity out and btc is no longer needed. Currently the sun appears to be heading into a Grand Solar Minimum of very low flare activity that could last 20-70 years.

A regular large flare that impacts Earth in a direct hit scenario, say Carrington-event level X50+, will have some noticeable effects on infrastructure. The Earth's magnetic field is our protection against such radiation and it is currently in a weakening, meandering phase (not good). However, only countries with long, uninterrupted North-South transmission lines will be those most affected by the induced voltage that will be frying electric devices connected to the grid. Many countries have small isolated transmission systems and many have already been protected against induced current from CME, EMP type blasts. Electricity is likely to stay up in many geographically isolated locations and internet and BTC network will probably not go down globally. It may get patchy and have 'islanding' type events where certain sections get isolated temporarily. Some bitcoin miners have their own dedicated hydropower stations and many of them will likely stay online. Many satellites will be knocked out but the optical fibre undersea backbones will probably stay up.

As long as you have your keys off-line, e.g. a paper wallet, or if on electronic media, inside a Faraday cage (biscuit tin, e-safe, etc), I don't see a solar flare, even a large one, as anything but a short-term risk to btc.

... the Great Filter is most likely socialist Statism or some equally toxic ideology unleashing widespread mis-management of civilisations that wipes it out through war, famine or plagues.

... just as knowledge, concepts and ideas are the true wealth of civilisations, fallacies, myths, superstitions and toxic ideologies are its greatest dangers

edit: for civilisations to scale they need scale-free organisational concepts and structures ... not base-level, emotional, romantic, tribalist, power-centralising brutalism

I'm trying to say that our expectations of future progress needs to be rooted in reality, instead of over-optimistic wishful thinking.

Reality is cruel and indifferent to our wishful thinking and daydreaming.

We can achieve pretty interesting things in space, as long as we stay within certain budgets.

But if we cross those limits, things get prohibitively expensive.

... it's not so cut and dried as you make out. Costs are based on the wealth of knowledge available. E.g. a SpaceX Starship technology drastically reduces cost to LEO.

... monetary wealth is a claim on resources. But a claim on the technology resources of late 1800 got you a big steamer and a railroad, today it's a Starship ... tomorrow?

... knowledge is the true wealth and ultimate limitation on resources ... economics is not a fact-based science, the only true resource constraint is knowledge ... human grey matter (maybe AI soon?)

... gravity is still a mystery to be solved, it is not what you think it is. When humans are ready, gravity will be solved and knowledge, energetic and technological wealth (and inherent risks) will come from that too. Starship will look like a S. Pacific Islanders paddling canoe when the gravitic technologies arrive.

Just watched the RGB demo call. I am still confused as to how it works and I have delved deep into colored coins for several years. I guess that wasn't the point of the demo, explaining the underlying mechanisms (which I have perused but still don't quite get it).

They showed the app on testnet creating an asset then transferring an asset. They said it will be able to work over the liquid network, Lightning Network as well as the regular bitcoin blockchain. All anonymously such that nobody can tell what has been transferred by looking at the transaction.

One big sneak peak they gave was that future development will include staking and DEX with Bitcoin. Defi is coming to Bitcoin. They said it's about a year out.

Their app is still in alpha stage, coming out on iPhone soon.

thanks for these updates Elwar, much appreciated.

I'm selling almost every day (DCA) to pay for our lake.

We started with regular cars, then lambos, now ranches and lakes...soon whole building blocks and/or villages, then islands, maybe asteroids, planets, stars, etc

You missed out my favourite from the list I'm looking forward to most; the gentlemen's club.

... Taleb is just a lightweight, over-rated "expert" who's pretense as an intellectual is kind of cringeworthy.

... he wrote one half decent book that bloviated extensively around a single concept that could have been covered easily in a short paper of 5-10 pages, and summarised in few paragraphs, sound-bited into the "black swan" catch phrase title.

... probably has some psychological issues (deep envy, imposter syndrome or anxiety from feelings of inadequacy) left over from his previous immigrant status in the US, behaves like he carries baggage, another who should likely just stay off twitter

satoshi increasingly appears as a giant to people like these ... it scares them

The rehabilitation plan for Mt.Gox has been accepted by the court. A timeline has been set, with the deadline for creditors' vote on the plan by October 8th. Any distribution will occur after creditors' meeting on October 20th. How long distribution itself will take is another matter, but those who choose early lump sum payments should presumably receive it within a year.

... will the GOX distributions be bitcoins or fiat?

... e.g. when Coinbase IPO happens there will be tens of billions of new fiat held in bitcoin-savvy hands looking for a new home ...
595  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 27, 2021, 11:00:24 PM

... I think there's a few important things missing on this timeline, although it could make the graph too busy (but I also think some things included were not as pivotal as those omitted). I think some of the dates aren't accurate (or lack knowledge of stealth developments more likely).

Well, if you can borrow a billion dollars at near zero percent interest, and then use those funds to buy corn, and those debts are payable with all sorts of conditions several years later ... ... wait, that's exactly what MSTR did.

And just quoting something someone said more than ten years ago.

Quote
Indeed there is nobody to act as central bank or federal reserve to adjust the money supply as the population of users grows. That would have required a trusted party to determine the value, because I don't know a way for software to know the real world value of things. If there was some clever way, or if we wanted to trust someone to actively manage the money supply to peg it to something, the rules could have been programmed for that.

In this sense, it's more typical of a precious metal. Instead of the supply changing to keep the value the same, the supply is predetermined and the value changes. As the number of users grows, the value per coin increases. It has the potential for a positive feedback loop; as users increase, the value goes up, which could attract more users to take advantage of the increasing value.

tl;dr ... satoshi said it's a number go up technology, feature not a bug

https://watchers.news/2021/02/19/laschmps-excursion-magnetic-reversal-42000-years-ago-caused-sudden-massive-climate-change/

Quote
Around 42 000 years ago, the Earth's magnetic fields reversed, triggering sudden, major climate change, extinction events, and long-term changes in human behavior, a new study shows.

Authors said they have precisely characterized the geomagnetic reversal and performed global chemistry-climate modeling and detailed radiocarbon dating of paleoenvironmental records to investigate impacts.
They found that geomagnetic field minima 42 000 years ago, in combination with Grand Solar Minima, caused substantial changes in atmospheric ozone concentration and circulation, driving synchronous global climate shifts that caused major environmental changes, extinction events, and transformations in the archaeological record.

To study what happened during that time, the scientists analyzed ancient New Zealand kauri trees that had been preserved in peat bogs for more than 40 000 years.

Using the yearly growth rings, the researchers were able to produce a detailed timescale of how the Earth's atmosphere changed over this time. The trees revealed a prolonged spike in the radiocarbon levels in the atmosphere caused by the collapse of the magnetic fields as the poles switched.

"The kauri trees are like the Rosetta Stone, helping us tie together records of environmental change in caves, ice cores, and peat bogs around the world," said lead author Alan Cooper.

... "climate change" huh? ... hint: the earth's magnetic field has weakened 15% since 1600 and the poles are on the move and accelerating over the last 20 years
