6181  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Antminer T9+ [US 48 only] $250 on: October 09, 2019, 12:00:10 AM
Since there has been nobody asking about this I am guessing that the $250 price is too expensive.
Give me an idea of what it is worth (and your offer) and I'll pass it along.
If not it just sits here mining away.

Edit: As of 9-Oct it was dropped to $225 due to Phil's info below. I can still send him an email if you want with an offer if you want it. He does not want to put it out much below that because it is still making him some small profit.

took me a bit to find that there was no deposit button, that you had to try to play the game with no money in your account before it gave you an invoice to load more. You might want to change that.
One of the great benefits of the Lightning Network is the transaction speed: there's no need to deposit first, as it only takes a few seconds to deposit.

Yeah, I know lightning is just about instant. And it's quick to deposit and play, not debating that point.

But I just felt it was not intuitive.
Just my view....I have no BTC in my account so I am not going to hit the spin button. Usually if you try that it just pops up an error that you need to deposit not with a way to deposit.

Just found a discussion about this from another site that was discussing the lightning network. Played the 10 sat that they give you and lost.
Found the withdraw button easy enough, took me a bit to find that there was no deposit button, that you had to try to play the game with no money in your account before it gave you an invoice to load more. You might want to change that.

You also might want to bump this thread now and then since the last post was over 3 months ago so it was way back in the pages.

6184  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [overview] Recover Bitcoin from any old storage format on: October 08, 2019, 01:12:38 AM
Just because I had this happen.

When restoring from very old core wallets (wallet.dat) keep in mind that you might have to use the same OS (Linux / Win / Mac) as the original file.
Not sure why, but I could not import a 0.7.1 wallet.dat from a Linux box into a Windows one. Gave a corrupt error and shutdown.

Popped the file into a CentOs like it was originally on and no issues.
Moved the updated wallet.dat back to the Windows machine and all was good. So it was something with the older version of the wallet.dat from a foreign OS
I can't think why there would be a reason for this to be happening, because as far as I know the current Bitcoin Core versions should be fully backward compatible with older versions, and the wallet.dat doesn't hold any information on what OS was used during creation. However, alternatively you could have imported the private key instead of running the original OS that the wallet was created on, unless you haven't backed up your private key. There's the other option of importing your seed which was generated at the creation of the wallet too. AFAIK, there should not be any problems with importing older wallet.dat files into newer operating systems even if they're different.

Personally, I don't rely on the wallet.dat file, and have backups of my private keys which I took care in making sure they never touched a electronic device, and aren't stored in plain text. Although, I still have hot wallets like anyone else, but the majority of my Bitcoin is stored via these offline generated private keys.

I believe a certain version of Electrum abandoned backwards compatibility a few years ago, but I'm not sure if I'm recalling that correctly, and even then I don't think Bitcoin Core in its history has rejected backward compatibility. Of course, even if older software isn't backward compt

I know it should not matter, but it did.

And the only reason I even thought about going back to the Linux box was there was a post someplace (here / reddit / somewhere) with somebody having the same issue that I saw a long time ago. So there were at least 2 people with the issue before this. The one who had it and the one who told him the solution. So, since also happened to me, I figured it was worth a mention.

The only thing I can come up with, and this is a stretch, is that there was a very minor difference with some versions of the DB, depending on the OS and how you compiled it.
But that is really pulling something out of the air and grasping for a reason.

They might be noticing the activity on https://shorelinecrypto.com/market/DOGE-NDL

It looks like there's standing orders to purchase over 11 billion NDL (almost everything that's been mined).  Though those orders aren't offering very much in return so I doubt they'll come to fruition.

By my back of the napkin math there are offers to buy over 15 billion NDL which even at the end will be more then the total supply of 13.798 billion.

So, yeah they are never getting filled.....

Did a 2nd time to verify that I was just not being stupid and the same thing happened.

Should probably spend some time doing some other checks but I'm a slacker not that motivated  Grin

6187  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BEWARE - Coinomi windows desktop wallet does not prevent unauthorized access on: October 07, 2019, 07:56:02 PM
You cannot send without entering your password.
But, you can see how much is in the wallet (which is bad)
You can generate receiving addresses (bit of a privacy concern but nothing major)

With that being said a lot of wallets are the same way. Including core.

6188  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What to do with all the old s-9s. on: October 07, 2019, 06:17:52 PM
Although not nearly as efficient (or even BTC related) I just did something similar with an L3+
Just unplugged 2 boards (left the other 2 in) and it's a nice just about dead silent 250MH/s scrypt space heater.

Going to work on power and speed vs fanspeed and noise while playing with the number of boards but, it might be nice in the back room of the condo for the winter.

Makes you wonder how much gear we can keep running by doing this.

Going to play with an A721 next.

not mine, perhaps Chicago's? he was active back then.

Not mine either - I haven't moved anything in years.

OK then it has to be someone from the old days.
Makes you wonder why they are silent about it. One day when I have they mythical thing called free time I'll have to go and see where the coins came from.

Since we had easy self mining till the new wallet it's probably not going to reveal much.

6190  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is there such a thing as a 2 of 3 phone wallet. (or any x of y for mobile) on: October 07, 2019, 12:09:19 AM
We went with the bitpay wallet.
CoPay is no longer in the play store.

Has Windows / Mac / iPhone / Android

So if we all have the our own wallet on both our phone and laptop no matter where we are we can send / receive so long as there is 2 of us.

Thanks,
Dave
6191  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BTCPay Server and missing transactions. Help! on: October 06, 2019, 08:26:38 PM
IIRC electrum only shows the 1st 20 addresses by default.
This may or may not be correct but take a look at:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Electrum/comments/a87l42/electrum_how_to_generate_many_recipient_addresses/

Quote
Typically you would give out the addresses from the online wallet. The online wallet would know which addresses are used and generate new ones accordingly.

You can of course force either wallet to generate addresses. The easiest way is to change the gap limit to a higher value. You should read about the gap limit to understand what it means. In short, it's the number of consecutive unused addresses the wallet will generate until it stops looking for transactions. By default, it is 20.

If you increase the gap limit, and actually create "gaps" larger than the default gap limit, you will need to increase the gap limit after you restore from seed again; otherwise some coins will not be found!

Go into the Console tab (View>Show Console), and type:

wallet.change_gap_limit(100)

Not 100% sure if this is your issue but since it stopped at 20 for you it seems likely.

6192  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-07-26] The IRS is warning thousands of cryptocurrency holders to pay taxes on: October 06, 2019, 07:44:25 PM
I'm just going to put this out there:

https://www.propublica.org/article/irs-sorry-but-its-just-easier-and-cheaper-to-audit-the-poor

So yeah, they do target the easier people. You can read into that what you will. But, have a bit more money and a more complicated return and you are more likely to get away with stuff.

6193  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Online Poker vs Live Casino Poker on: October 06, 2019, 03:15:35 PM
I can see it divided into several different groups of people and several different reasons for online vs. live and reasons for both.

For me online is a quick and cheap way to kill some time.
Even if I lived across the street from a casino that had live poker you are still looking a a time investment.
Go there, possibly wait for a table, cash out chips in the end (hopefully) leave go home.
This AM I played for ~30 minutes in the shorts and t-shirt I slept in while having my AM coffee while having the local news on in the background.

Online also tends to have MUCH lower limits.
Many online poker places I play start at 100 SAT ante some are even 10 or 1 so we are taking mostly under $0.25 a hand for the most part just to kill some time. Not a bad deal.

As with most gambling YMMV but for me although I do love playing in a live casino, there are advantages to online.

6194  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Chinese Power supply - Can i source a small replacement fan? on: October 06, 2019, 12:49:20 PM
Depends on where you are. And how fast you want it.
In the US NewEgg or Amazon might has them.

https://www.amazon.com/Protechnic-Fan-12V-28mm-MGA4012YB-028/dp/B010Q29GRE

Microcenter if there is one near you might have something.

Other parts of the world will vary.
A local PC repair place also might have something.

6195  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is there such a thing as a 2 of 3 phone wallet. (or any x of y for mobile) on: October 05, 2019, 07:48:45 PM

-Dave

Do you have some familiarity and regularity with doing that?

Rushing and screwing something up? More times then I care to admit.

X of N wallets all the time on the PC side, never mobile which is what we are doing now.

As for Electrum we do need IOS.

6196  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is there such a thing as a 2 of 3 phone wallet. (or any x of y for mobile) on: October 05, 2019, 04:38:43 PM
Do any of the phone based wallets have such a feature. Where 3 of us can generate an address and you need 2 of us to spend it?
Looking to do a small project and it's not that we don't trust each other but the amounts at times passing though might occasionally be significant.
This just eliminates a bit of worry about any one device being compromised or someone doing something stupid.

Yeah I know we can do it with PCs and some hardware wallets but we are looking to do this a slightly different way and for the most part we are going to be doing it while mobile and phones by themselves would be the best. You might forget you ColdCard or your Trezor but you are not going to forget your phone....

-Dave

Phones, many of them, have become trivial to hack, or exploit or take advantage of; that may be due to also ARM processor exploits, I think those have become somewhat a reality perhaps.

But I recall years ago, co pay wallet let you do what you suggest, so I imagine the bitpay wallet allows many devices; however, I havent looked at that wallet recently to see what has happened in the intervening years.

Yes they do that. I don't believe I forgot about them.
Now to spend some time testing.

Side note, was not really worried about the hacking as much as rushing to do something and screwing it up so we were wanting a 2nd set of eyes on it.

Thanks. Have a merit :-)

6198  Other / Meta / Re: Staff Dabs abusing merit? on: October 05, 2019, 01:58:51 PM
I commonly see one good post from a user, and then go through their history to merit even more of their posts, because if they have made one constructive post then they've likely made more. You can go through my merit history, and you'll see that I've done this a lot for multiple users of all kinds of ranks. Even, some of the highest merited users on the forum.

Especially when it comes to newbies. I think users are a little more willing to give merits to newbies or have made an effort with their post even if lets say a hero member made the same post, and they wouldn't have got merited for it. I think its in the nature of a lot of users to encourage newbies as much as possible.

Agree 100%. I am very stingy with merit. Yeah I know I should not be. I never really thought about it but now I have to go back and check to see if I gave more merit to people with higher or lower ranks and how much merit they have. I know I have not given at times when I look at the 1st post in the thread and see 30 people have given merit and I'm just thinking why bother sending one more.

Have to spend some time this week and see where and who I should send some merit to.

Which loops around to the 1st post in the thread. If I dump a bunch of merit on 2 or 3 people who threads I now look at again am I doing anything wrong? No I'm actually just fixing an oversight.

an alternate ndl explorer.

some folks may recall i've been running an ndl explorer at my site.
being on a home/consumer grade connection it will never be prime time material.
it may not be accessible to all people (some network border gateways appear to block http traffic to addresses
 they consider consumer/home type)

buttt... since it's not the 'official' explorer, playing and fooling around with it is a great option Smiley Cheesy

anyone good with Pasta and/or Pirate phraseology i ask to make recommendations to me on
how i can modify the english text displayed on the explorer pages to be more noodly groovy.

i've made some simplistic changes already, feel free to suggest improvements to those as well.

explorer is at http://coins.dognose.net:3001/

suggestions could be made by direct message here, or by clicking on the red "report issues" link
at the bottom of the explorer pages.

thank-you, may your meatballs be touched by his noodly appendage.

I like the new text on the explorer.

I never actually look at the main explorer except to see if it's running, while poking around yours I noticed that someone back in February moved 1 billion coins to a single address. The other billion coin address has been inactive for close to 3 years now. Is it yours?

Not a lot of people active on here so it's probably a limited number of who would have done it. I didn't go back and trace the coins history.

6200  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Dice - A small mistake emptied my wallet. on: October 05, 2019, 12:54:20 PM
I have actually done this more then once in "real life" at a casino.

1st time) Sat down at a video poker machine and put in a $100 bill. Every other machine in the bank was $1 the one I sat down at on the end was $10 hit max bet. Was $50 instead of $5 oops. Actually got 2 pair so good for me.

2nd time) Playing nickel slots waiting for a friend to get out of a seminar. Got a text from him that he was out and walking towards where we were supposed to meet. Hit max bet instead of cashout. Stone cold sober, had enough sleep, just a brain fart but, instead of a $0.50 (10 coins) I did a $25 bet (500 coins) lost got really pissed at myself.

Those are the 2 that I remember. Over the last 30 years or so of playing in casinos I'm sure I have done it more.
