I live in San Francisco, involved in the tech community and I'd say more than half the people I speak with know about Bitcoin and about 10% really really know Bitcoin. It's surprising how well some people understand it and how many people really are supportive.
I don't think I could say the same if I still lived in a small North Carolina town like I did a few years back but give it time.

I'm stuck in North Carolina, but I'm going to be fleeing to Florida instead.

In my estimation mtgox has approx. 10k active users, which means an average of 43 BTC per user. I suspect that a large part of that 437k belongs to day traders, who are well aware of the risk. After all they continue to use mtgox even after being goxed several times. They are the only ones who stand to incur big losses.
I just hope that if that if 437k were to be lost, that people aren't using mtgox as their personal wallet.

I have somewhat btc for exchange. I will exchange my btc for USD 1/1 according to mtgox price plus 2%. I will only take international wire transfer, mtgox code and western union. Let me know if you are interested. Thank ya! What is "somewhat btc" and what can I do with it?

For a great book following along this thread's theme, read Daemon and it's sequel, Freedom. 2nd time it's been mentioned here, i'll be sure to check it out. Also, StorJ sound amazing, especially since it is a service you might feel better a program like this handling, rather than individuals.

What if mtgox screws up and sends all those bitcoins to the null address like they did with 2000 BTC a while ago?! :O
Then all our BTC are instantly worth more? Unless the majority of your bitcoins are among those 437k. I really think losing that much would be truly devastating to the economy, if not bitcoins themselves.

Oooh sounds interesting...
I am tempted to read the script XD

I think I remembered seeing a bitcoin logo with the latin of "In numbers we trust".
Also, why bring this back from the dead? Anyone have new logos in mind?

don't get so excited. It's called google bot.
But now we need one that's antonymous (and all the wonderful capablities mentioned earlier) and charges people to collect and organize porn.

No that would not be considered suspicious. Furthermore, if one is only dealing or interacting with Bitcoins, and not a national currency or "real money," then we are not aware of any laws that even apply in any way.
That's what I thought. It is probably why all of these bitcoin laundering sites are still up. Thank you.

You could come out with real bitcoin scratch-off games while you are at it. Someone pays 1 btc for a scratch-off that contains a private key with anywhere from 0-X bitcoins on it. I'm pretty sure that this idea has been discussed in the gambling section before, though.

Mmm, that's new to me. I thought that you only had to pay fees with some services (like Mt. Gox). So, if I have understood correctly, when I send someone some bitcoins using the client, I pay some of them as a fee?
Possibly. Depends on the factors mentioned above (see the link I posted). The fees you are talking about are charged by exchanges when you convert bitcoins to dollars and vice versa. These fees are used by the network to avoid spam transactions. If you are using a fountain service, I would advise pointing your funds to a balance (not necessarily a wallet), so you are not stuck sending the coins you received from the fountain. Of course, most exchanges/wallets/accounts charge a fee anyways, but this should still save you time and/or money.

Yep, I am arguing against using my bills for this purpose.
They are best as a way to give bitcoins to someone and that someone to have a reasonable expectation that you don't have the private key to take them back. They really are for physical transactions.
I was mostly pointing out that you don't have to send one payment to one of your blank cheques and then write/print the received amount onto it. If you were saving up for a purchase, you could send funds to the cheque until it reaches the amount needed, while keeping it someplace safe. (not in your wallet) And yes... If you merely wanted to save/hoard coins, you could/should print off several copies of the private key(s) and store them someplace safe/secure.

The best, most guaranteed, and oldest professions are still XXX related. I can totally see one of these being an xxx themed cleverbot that charges for conversations, or a bot that collects, aggregates, and sorts porn for you and provides it as a service (a netflix of porn).
I don't want a cleverbot of porn... At the end I would be left feeling worse off than the beginning. A bot that collects, aggregates, and sorts porn would be a great service. It also sounds like something that is capable now.

Hmmm Meanwhile, the American political and economic system is collapsing, with the price of fuel and the unemployment rates both skyrocketing, and steady reports of violent drug gangs crossing the border from Mexico. It's coming true!

I liked bitcoin being called bitcoin. It is what it is. Some get it and some don't.
Eventually more will get it.
Bitcoin could have huge political and economical implications as a result of it's widespread usage, but like any tool, it's simply just a tool.
Trying to coin some political phrase to gain additional interest right now imo will do more harm than good imo.
So we should call it the National Socialist's Coin for greater Germany?

I can put the funds in my bank account though from paypal... so maybe I just have to do that?
Why do you want to do that? I thought the only way for you to get BTC was through PayPal, you didn't say anything about a bank account. If you need BTC ASAP, keep your balance in PayPal, and try to find someone that will accept a Mass Pay. If you have a Credit Card, you can buy bitcoins from http://www.mrcoins.org/ or http://simplecoin.com/, the latter is relatively new. If you are outside the US and have a cell phone, you may be able to purchase BTC from https://dialcoin.com/. If you have Cash (go to an ATM if needed), you could buy a moneypak and then send someone the code for it and a copy of the receipt for bitcoins.

I put $20 into VIRWOX. I transferred it into SSL, then into BTC. I ended up with only 4BTC!
That sucks. Perhaps you should look to an exchange that will offer a better USD-> BTC rate. I sent it to my wallet. It never came. I tried to log in and it said "account disabled".
So I yelled at them in an email, and they put the $20 back into my paypal.
I wish I knew more about VIROX to know what happened there, but at least you got your PPUSD back. So, the only money I have, is in my paypal. I have no cash or anything else and I need BTC asap.
Well, if you have a PPUSD balance, then you might want to look into PayPal Mass Pay, which is going to be your best chance at getting bitcoins with PPUSD. Any other PayPal method will likely mean that you will have to pay a high premium for your bitcoins, if you find a seller at all. Not sure what rates someone will give you for mass pay though. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Payment_methodshttps://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_batch-payment-overview-outsideI normally don't hold a PPUSD balance, so I don't know the details.

Mostly, I think they are a cute way of promoting bitcoin and make fun collectables to store your loot in.
I could - Buy a blank cheque
- Copy QR codes for funding/balance
- Store cheque someplace secure
- Fund the balance over time
- Collect the cheque when ready to import OR Fill it out and trade for Fiat, Gold, Goods, Services, etc.

I keep getting "flaged" for some reason. Ive tried prepaid visa cards, paypal...
VIRWOX ripped me off.
They put my money back in my paypal ($20).
Would anyone be willing to help me get BTC? Ill pay you a few bucks.
Are you specifically having problems buying bitcoins on VIRWOX? Or are you completely unable to put a USD balance onto VIRWOX? If you are familiar with purchasing prepaid cards, you could buy bitcoins with a prepaid visa or gift card that you send in the mail to someone, or you could give someone a moneypak code along with a scanned copy of the receipt.
