721  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monacoin is huge in japan: %200 gains and rising on: October 14, 2017, 04:54:13 PM
Im glad I bought this when it was cheap. I was aware of the growing adoption of this in japan, so when it bottomed I picked up a bunch, now it's up almost 0.5BTC, pretty cool since I didn't invest much, just picked some because it was a very old coin and still active, few of these out there. The community is always doing things and they will not let it stagnate.

It's funny how BCash was being marketed heavily by Ver in japan as the coin to use for daily things and turns out Monacoin is used way more.
722  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin and Gold - origins of value on: October 13, 2017, 04:12:19 PM
Funny to see this guy now working for the banks and performing a 51% attack on bitcoin trying to push the segwit2x code with bribed miners and merchants. OP is the CEO of Shapeshift in case you missed it, and he supports segwit2x. A reminder to not use Shapeshift ever again.
723  Economy / Speculation / Re: $6000 comming through on: October 13, 2017, 02:19:28 PM
Major resistances have been blown like a tower of cards. This is only the beginning. Expect $7000 short thereafter. We may get to $10000 this year if the segwit2x corporate takeover is beaten quick enough. Im hoping everyone with power in bitcoin crushes the corporations involved in the hardfork.

If we get past segwit2x, it will be smooth sailing. For now let's enjoy the ride.
Bitcoin passed $6k mark on a few exchanges today but then it corrected back to $5.5k but I think the average price per bitcoin of $6k will be attained before the start of November.

The fact that we have huge gaps in prices between some exchanges having passed the $6000 mark and some still struggling to beat high $5800's means that we are still yet to convincingly pass $6000 on every exchange, once that happens then we can aim for the next level.

Im pretty convinced we will see further all time highs, this was not all. Before 25th I would say we have 90% chances of seeing a new all time high.
724  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: The higher the rise, the bigger the plunge (btc vs alts) on: October 12, 2017, 11:00:08 PM

But I think Bitcoin has started a new upward cycle that will bring it well over $ 6,000; in my opinion, it will grow for this whole month of October and until mid-November, when the next segwit2x fork will approach.
I believe that in those days Bitcoin can do intraday tricks up to $ 8,000-9,000, then go down violently as you say, and maybe go to touch the old ATH at $ 5,000 that he just broke right now.

If you look even in the past, after the big growths, when bitcoin collapses it drops by at least 40%. The $ 8,000-9,000 range with a 40% drop just goes up to the $ 5,000 of the old ATH.

In any case, it will be an interesting month, and perhaps a blood bath for Alt  Grin

It's hard to say how bitcoin will go this time. There's no way to know really. This could be the top, or $7000 could be it, hell even $10000.

But what seems rather clear is that sooner or later, the cycle will end and then alts will rise again. I don't believe this is the end of altcoins as we know them. Maybe eventually most alts will die, but I think after BTC takes a break, alts will rise again an those that bought the right one when they were really low, will make pretty sweet gains.
725  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Two forks I would like to see: Bitcoin Extended and Bitcoin Drive on: October 12, 2017, 09:52:35 PM

Although I don't agree here (there are a lot of "pre-Bitcoin-Cash" SHA256-based altcoins like Peercoin and Terracoin and it doesn't seem that they have "stolen" hashrate) for practical reasons (high difficulty, danger of 51% attack by large Bitcoin miners or pools) it may be a good idea to start the coin with an ASIC-unfriendly algorithm.

Because these are altcoins and don't have the bitcoin name on it, or have a bunch of people that will receive free coins on them, which will create guaranteed activity that miners will be tempted to mine (at a loss from the original bitcoin blockchain if they share the same hashing algorithm). Miners themselves hold BTC and will want to dump these forked coins too most likely.

It is then preferred that any further bitcoin forks at least have the decency to use a different hashing algorithm.

Im not sure about the development state of sidechain/drivechains.
726  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Two forks I would like to see: Bitcoin Extended and Bitcoin Drive on: October 11, 2017, 01:59:24 PM
Well, as long as they clearly state that they are an altcoin and not BTC, I don't see the problem with it, otherwise they are de-facto attacks on BTC (like segwit2x).

The only way a Bitcoin hardfork would be able to claim that the new chain is the real BTC, is if it got 100% consensus.

Yes, if that really becomes reality Grin, I would strongly be in favour to promote and design this/these fork(s) "as an altcoin", like Bitcoin Cash did, with replay protection and clearly different branding.

Quote

I would not have any problems to include more goodies of these hard fork proposals into a "Bitcoin 2L". It could be an experimental coin that is meant to be a showcase to what is possible with Bitcoin blockchain technology today. Maybe we could also call it "Bitcoin Experimental". Well, here I'm starting to dream, haha.

@Morphling: Obviously, there would be free coins, too Grin And if there is low miner interest, maybe a change to an asic-unfriendly algo would be the way to go.

Once we have sidechains, a lot of experimentation could happen as sidechains without the need of a hardfork. Now im not sure to what degree does sidechain allow for experimentation. There may still be things that cannot be done as a sidechain and would require a hardfork but I dont know the specifics.

The thing with a hardfork is that if you use the same hashing algo you steal power from the main chain, so these hardforks should use a different algo too (like Bitcoin Gold is going to do)
727  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Two forks I would like to see: Bitcoin Extended and Bitcoin Drive on: October 11, 2017, 12:32:36 PM
Well, as we have already broken the taboo and are about to fork to hundreds or thousands of "Bitcoin-based" altcoin chains (like Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Cash ...) then we could create some really useful fork-coins.

Two proposals:

- Bitcoin Extended: Bitcoin with Extension blocks (see here for a short description). Extension blocks are a "second layer" technique that enables additional blocks to be created that form a kind of sidechain. They allow to drastically expand the capacity of the blockchain, and not all nodes will have to process all blocks.
- Bitcoin Drive: Bitcoin with the ability to create Drivechains (see here for the proposal). Proposed first by Paul Sztorc, Drivechains are sidechains that are merge-mined and pegged to Bitcoin, and they are validated by the miners themselves. This proposal needs a new opcode that is unlikely to be included into Bitcoin Core.

We could also unite both proposals. My suggestion for a name would be Bitcoin 2L (Bitcoin for Second Layers), because extension blocks and drivechains are very promising second-layer technologies. Lightning Network and offchain techniques would be also possible with it.

There are a lot of cool things that I would like to see on a HF:

728  Other / Meta / Re: Is Tor safe to use here? on: October 10, 2017, 03:30:50 PM
In general, if the server which a website is hosted on doesn't offer SSL/TLS then the tor exit node will be able to see all your request data. For example; passwords.

Take a look at this link: https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en#warning

That will provide you with the information of what not to do and what you can do. Basically, if you are worried about compromising any of your data on any website, make sure SSL/TLS is enabled. If it's not the exit node will be able to see sensitive data. Of course the likelyhood of someone seeing a bitcointalk forum account on a exit node and acting upon it might not be very likely. But, your in luck it's safe to use Tor on Bitcointalk  as https is enabled.

Right, so nobody could ever stumble upon your opened session in the forum because it's encrypted? because that is what I was referring too: not closing your account and someone getting the IP you were using on that session on this same website then seeing my account opened but I guess that can't happen.

I was also worried that for some reason when I log off I get this error: "Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again. " It sounds like "your account is still opened, log in again and close it".
729  Other / Meta / Is Tor safe to use here? on: October 10, 2017, 01:37:24 PM
I was just wondering if in this forum and in forums in general, it is safe to use Tor if your identity has value? for example a Legendary account has value here, because it takes years of being active and learning about BTC and people want to hack you constantly.

My worry was that since Tor uses a different IP every 10 minutes (I think), if you forget to close your session or for example your computer is rebooted due a crash and you don't log out, can someone else using Tor that's browsing bitcointalk.org stumble upon your logged in account due being assigned the same IP that you were using? Or this is impossible because he would need to have local cookies too? Im just not sure how this works exactly and I was wondering if some accounts got hacked this way since a lot of people use Tor to access this site.
730  Other / Meta / Re: Can admins see editing history of a post? on: October 10, 2017, 01:37:42 AM
Look at my last post above.

Oh now I see it. But I guess if admins can't see a proper history and access the posts prior edit it's better to post your BTC address on that thread, and even if they could see it, I guess it's an extra security layer to get quoted by someone else, hopefully not some newbie account tho.

One of the good things of being active in sig campaigns is that you can probably always find your address in some locked thread  Grin
731  Other / Meta / Re: Can admins see editing history of a post? on: October 10, 2017, 01:24:08 AM
I see so many people getting their accounts hacked lately, it's pretty crazy. I think it must be mostly due unsafe email providers or something.

Anyway, I've seen that the best way to get your account back is to sign a message with a BTC address you control, but I see people quoting their addresses on this thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0

This makes me thing that for some reason admins can't see edited posts?

In that case I guess I will go there and post an address. There's still the insanely unlucky event that the guy hacks your account and the account quoting your address and edits both but I guess that would be like getting hit by an asteroid or something.

See that solid black line under the title? If it's edited, it will be dashed, not solid and if you hover over it, it will show the last edited date.

I edit the post and now I see a line below the post but the upper line is still black and solid, also when I hoover over any of both lines I don't see the edited date. What im missing there? Im not sure what i should be looking at to be honest.

Can admins see editing history of a post?

Yes, though it's a bit of a hassle.

There's currently no history of profile fields, though, so you definitely can't rely on your signature or anything like that.

Well on that case I will use the staking thread just in case.

733  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Cash's price during a Segwit2X fork on: October 09, 2017, 02:26:57 PM
anyone using bcash as a safe haven is both a fool and an asshole.

it's just another alt with a below average value proposition. at least most alts have something different about them.

it's not going anywhere. it also has a questionable future.

you know when someone's spent too long in crypto when they believe some alt is going to protect them. try real dollars instead.

I agree, but it's a good question speculation wise. I wonder how BCash will do if the segwit2x attack causes a big price crash in BTC... maybe Roger Ver uses this confusion to pump BCash and trick noobs into thinking BCash is the real Bitcoin, it is a very possible scenario. I think if they are going to get behind segwit2x, it must be to make their altcoin stronger. It can't be a coincidence that Roger Ver claims he will list B2X as BTC on his website (bitcoin.com). This is obvious to me, they just want to attack Core at all costs, even if it kills Bitcoin itself, and they want to profit with their BCash experiment in the process.
734  Other / Meta / Difficult Tor browsing on: October 08, 2017, 03:20:10 PM
I need Tor to access the site at work's office, it seems that in the past few hours the forum is being extremely sloppy with Tor for some reason. Tor opens other sites as usual except this forum. Also the captcha fails repeatedly saying this:

"Your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now. For more details visit our help page"

I have tried accessing the forum at home with a regular IP and it seems that the forum manages to open but it's sloppier than usual. I was wondering if we are under another DDoS attack of sorts.
735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Segwit2x attack: OpenBazar team now under USG payroll on: October 08, 2017, 02:36:21 PM
OpenBazar has most likely been bribed to support the SegWit2x scam. DCG (Digital Currency Group) has offered them a good deal, and now they are supporting the scam too. Be sure to not support OpenBazar from now on, they are part of the ongoing corporate takeover on Bitcoin.
DCG (Digital Currency Group) is the company spearheading the Segwit2x movement. The CEO of DCG is Barry Silbert, a former investment banker, and Mastercard is an investor in DCG.

736  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin.org to denounce "Segwit2x" attack on: October 06, 2017, 01:56:38 PM
https://bitcoin.org/en/posts/denounce-segwit2x

Looks like Bitcoin.org is about to warn users into not falling for the segwit2x scam by holding coins in exchanges that are deliberately (or ignorantly) ambigious about what they are going to do.

A reminder that any exchange that isn't listing both tokens, and clearly stating that  BTC is the legacy chain while B2X or however they want to name it, is segwit2x, is scamming you by not giving you a clear choice to solve this as it should be solved (in the markets).

Scam artist Jeff Garzik and co are also not adding proper replay protection to make things for harder trying to dump the shitcoin.

Keep your eyes open and remember to email the following companies telling them to list the legacy chain as BTC and the hardfork as something else or threat them to never use their scam sites again:

737  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Just confriming, segwit or segwit2x is going ahead on BTC? on: October 05, 2017, 03:16:10 PM
If 90% or more of the miners supports it then its really core who should add replay protection and change the difficulty adjusting.

Why are we still disusing this?

https://blockchain.info/en/pools

F2pool is %10+ of the hashrate, F2pool is not support segwit2xCoin anymore. Reason they are still voting "intentional" and noobs think it's still relevant:

https://twitter.com/f2pool_wangchun/status/906022864389681153

So thats -12% ish hashrate support for 2xCoin, and that doesn't count Slush and other miners that will defect.

The legacy chain will not disappear. Bitcoin will not lose.

738  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How To Spot A Bitcoin Scam on: October 05, 2017, 01:28:58 PM
There is one extremely straightforward rule - if it looks too good to be true then it is.

On top of that always google site:bitcointalk.org 'subject' and see if anything comes up. If nothing at all comes then that's not an encouraging sign.

Risk free returns are impossible. If there was a legitimate interest paying Bitcoin option I can guarantee you every single Bitcoin on Earth would pile into it instantly as they're all sat doing nothing. There is literally not one on the entire planet.

Lending on well known exchanges has enough risk, let alone all these bullshit ponzis. Have you been offered a specific 'opportunity'?

As an user of this forum for years now and as an experienced bitcoin user, I have noticed that it is pretty obvious to claim any 1 post account opening a thread with a link is automatically a scam of sorts trying to steal your bitcoin.

So a good cautionary advice is to never open links in here coming from new accounts, and also remember to activate noscript (Unfortunately the new captcha system requires js on, but you can turn it off after the captcha is filled)
739  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The flippening, its over. on: October 04, 2017, 02:51:33 PM
i'm really interested to see where ethereum is gonna head in the near term.

the ico mania couldn't last and now we're seeing the first wave of regulatory crackdowns. whether that inspires ico operators to shape up is another matter. there are now also multiple projects that have sucked up a huge amount of money that now need to deliver something. how many of those will pull it off? not very many is my bet.

the sea might well pull out and we'll get a good view of who's swimming naked.

on the flip side they have their pos conversion which will be intriguing to watch. i wonder where all that mining will head next.

ICO's will continue getting hosted in other countries where they aren't banned, it's as simple as hosting them on some random place that no one cares about and since it's a global online offer they will always get speculators buying. Im surprised to see some people think bans will stop ICO speculation. It's not gonna happen.

So ETH will keep getting used, even if it's only to issue ICO tokens in smart contracts.
740  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin presently at a resistance hold or break $4100 to $4300 on: October 03, 2017, 04:24:14 PM
According to this chart analysis it is speculated that if bitcoin cannot this resistance it is likely it will pullback or corrected to $3600 and panicking sellers may pushed it even lower,  but if the present resistance is broken, there is the tendency that bitcoin is going to all time higher record of $5K+
http://cryptopost.com/bitcoin-daily-btc-facing-strong-resistance-september-27-2017/
Analyst contribution is welcomed.

Let's not be too pessimistic here. If we fail to break the current resistances, I guess $4000 is still a good entry point for a lot of people that want to buy bitcoin cheaper. I remain bullish, 2 forks are coming, this means people want to hold BTC to receive the coins on the forked chains, I believe $5000 is possible before Jeff Garzik crashes the price in november due the 2x attack.
