7261  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: [BitInstant] Instantly Deposit Cash at 4 Different Banks into MtGox and TradeHil on: March 22, 2012, 10:31:29 PM
Do the exchanges that accept redeemable codes for adding funds and then allow withdrawal to Dwolla (e.g., Mt. Gox, BitFloor) require that the funds be used for trading?

What if I simply used BitInstant to move cash to an exchange solely for the purpose of getting funds quickly into Dwolla, without any conversion to and from bitcoins first?

There's nothing to fear from a single worldwide currency:

7263  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What is the real chance of the network splitting into parts? on: March 22, 2012, 08:28:13 PM
Nodes are trying to connect to other random nodes, they don't choose only their neibours, right?

With the amount of hashing on the network, those 20 nodes, even if mining, would not mine enough blocks to reach 6 confirmations anytime soon.  If those 20 were disconnected entirely you'ld simply find that no new blocks are arriving.  If you require confirmations to be the recommended six blocks, the transactions will never confirm and thus you aren't at risk.

The client can be configured to explicitly connect to certain nodes, so in your example if one of those 20 maintains at least one connection to the outside, all 20 will get the correct block chain.

If you wish to accept on 0/unconfirmed transactions you'ld want to also use a monitoring system that listens for double spend attempts (something that is not yet commercially available though).  That would require a continuous connection to the monitoring service though.

Here's a post with additional discussion on the topic:

7264  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What's the difference between InstaWallet.org and EasyWallet.org? on: March 22, 2012, 08:00:03 PM
Anyone know how long Easwallet has been operating?

The domain was registered March 6th -- a little more than two weeks ago.

I believe this might be the operator of the site:

7265  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why not leave bitcoinia in maximum leverage? on: March 22, 2012, 07:45:34 PM
I have ditched several temp Bitcoinica accounts with negative balances. It helps to keep your risky plays from overlapping into your main fund to separate them into a new account.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_hazard

You get to keep your gains yet your losses are shared with the rest of Bitcoinica's customers (when paying larger than necessary spreads).

That's basically is what happened to our banking system in the U.S. after Glass-Steagall was repealed too.    Though with Bitcoinica, nobody is forced to participate.  With the banking crisis we all paid (and are still paying) regardless of whether we wanted to or not.
7266  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Security warning: trojan stealing coins, swapping C&P addresses on: March 22, 2012, 07:04:58 PM
When I have more details on the software involved/responsible I will update, in the meantime make sure to double check the address you copy/paste.

I believe that this is a windows only vulnerability.

In case no one caught it earlier this week.

Thanks for that -- I hadn't seen it.   SMF mangled your URL so am going to repost it:

7268  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Use Case - Bitcoin intl money transfers on: March 22, 2012, 06:21:40 PM
I can easily buy Bitcoins to send back home, but what exactly are the recipients supposed to do with them?  We seem to be missing half of the equation here.

That report described it well.  It basically summarized the advance of mobile being part of the international remittance system mostly only after mobiles gain traction as a domestic bill payments system, mobile banking and/or P2P transfers among those withing the same jurisdiction first.

So just with P2P mobile transfer it becomes easy to provide bitcoin exchange services for family members, friends or an extended circle even.  This could basically be a drop in substitute for hawala and hundi as the exchanger can function independently, without the need for any hawala partner outside the country.

7269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: seems like a bug in the transaction details on: March 22, 2012, 06:01:03 PM
I tried it already, same result.

I can confirm this behavior.  Using My Wallet on http://www.blockchain.info/wallet I created a transaction with two outputs, both in my local wallet and find that the amounts are combined when I view the Transaction info for either transaction.

I'll file a bug report on this.

Thank you for noticing this and taking the time to inquire.

7271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: seems like a bug in the transaction details on: March 22, 2012, 09:47:37 AM
There is same window when I click on "1" transaction and when I click on "2" transaction, reports a single transaction 0.015btc comed to a single address, which wrong.
So in the transaction list transactions displays correct, but the "transaction info" shows wrong information.

That is very strange.

Can you confirm the problem by trying to open the Transaction details dialog by doing this:

1) Select the row for 1PDeS3yibhuiHeD7cZGsWwP2Lx21Urm3E6 (your "1")
2) Right-click
3) Select Show details

Then

1) Select the row for your 1QGNufQY1a67k6oxAGV8vaJH9ACZvmKQ2A  (your "2")
2) Right-click
3) Select Show details

Does selecting the dialog that way produce any different results?
7272  Other / Meta / Re: skepticism on: March 22, 2012, 08:15:48 AM
What if the latest bitcoin-qt is packed with a wallet-stealing trojan...

You can verify the checksum for the Bitcoin.org client binary that you download as described here:

There are many eyes on these releases.  Even so, if you don't trust the Bitcoin.org binary, you can always build from the github source yourself.

If you don't trust the Bitcoin.org source, you can always use another client (e.g., MultiBit, Electrum, Armory).

Also, it is not usually the case where an update needs to be performed right away -- especially if you aren't mining.  If you are concerned, there's no need to be the first to do an upgrade.

Remittances to developing countries were estimated at about $351 billion for 2011,

This is an excellent paper on the international remittance markets:

7274  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Google Checkout/Amazon Payments to accept BTC for CC? on: March 22, 2012, 06:46:29 AM
I have heard horror stories about accounts being shut down for no reason, but nothing first-hand from someone selling Bitcoin. Figured I'd ask around first.

BTCNow.net is one.  They were sparring with Google for a matter of weeks or months maybe, then stopped accepting Google Checkout completely.  They now only sell Bitcoins for OKPay and Dwolla.
7275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Cash will Remain King and the Huge Opportunity for Bitcoin on: March 22, 2012, 06:37:17 AM
one thing that strikes me the most is the complete lack of understanding [...] on the challenges faced by many that do not have access to the electronic payment systems we all take for granted.

One thing that is becoming interesting is how some prepaid debit cards are becoming like bank accounts.  You can do a direct deposit transaction to the card (e.g., using Dwolla) for example.

Here's some excerpts of an excellent article:

Quote
73 percent of banks acknowledge that there are many un-banked and under-banked consumers in their local communities, but only 18 percent reported that finding a way to serve them is a priority.

94 percent of banks ran credit prior to granting a checking account. About half said that they required a minimum score.

The top reason for using the cards is the fear of an overdraft. Going to prepaid is driven by a distaste for checking accounts.

Here's one interesting development.  BTC-Pak now sells MoneyPaks (which can be used for reloading on many brands of reloadable debit cards).  BTC-Pak sells denominations of $100, $250 and $500:

7276  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Best way to anonymously buy Bitcoin on: March 22, 2012, 03:58:04 AM
Does anyone know the best (and most reliable) way to buy Bitcoin anonymously?

You don't mention where you are located.

One method is to send cash in the mail.  http://www.get-bitcoin.com is one merchant that offers that type of exchange.  Sending cash in the mail internationally though often has a lesser chance of making it to its intended destination.

There is also the recommendation here to buy using cash via other methods:

There is also the ability to walk into a bank and deposit cash using BitInstant.  In most instances, no identity is required.  This less anonymous than the other options but probably is adequate.
7277  Economy / Marketplace / Re: New Bitcoin Payment Method: Direct Transfer from Bank Account on: March 22, 2012, 03:43:30 AM
ACH transfers are fairly difficult to reverse, although not completely impossible.

ACH is the new PayPal.

There was a new entry added to the FAQ:

Q). Are there special requirements for My Bank Account orders? (Added March 2012)
A). Yes. Unfortunately, we have lost thousands of dollars on these orders, due to our banks clearing payments that were later fraudulently reversed. To reduce the amount of fraud, all My Bank Account orders must be accompanied by:
- Photo identification
- A current utility bill
- The first page of a current bank statement, showing sufficient funds in the account

7278  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Get-Bitcoin.Com: Reviews Thread on: March 22, 2012, 03:40:59 AM
I notice the site has the alert:

Update 3/19/2012: Unfortunately, some cash deposit orders made on Monday the 19th may be delayed a day or two. If your order has been delayed longer than 24 hours, contact us at support@get-bitcoin.com for a fee refund.

This works on all iPhones and Android phones.

Does it work on iPad?

Is there a way to print a receipt?
7280  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Quickly need help with payments with PayPal on: March 22, 2012, 02:19:18 AM
I am trying to sell micro bitcoins with PayPal, the system is working fine, but PayPal is taking a HUGE chunk. These are pennies we are talking about..it's not much to begin with and there taking like half. I posted here because I know a lot of people will see it and I need help quick... My question is how do I change this..

Is your account a business account that can be configured for PayPal's Micropayments pricing?
