741  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Poloniex hacked, $100M+ stolen on: November 12, 2023, 02:04:47 AM
He seems to have been well prepared for this that he's just recycling his old script. Having your platforms hacked one after another has certain advantages; you just have to Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V, rephrase a little, and, voilà, there's your familiar statement.
It seems effective if this is just for another publicity that he's doing and yeah, looks well planned and prepared for it. But for the concern of the users there, hoping everything is fine and before anything crazier happens, they should just remove their funds there and withdraw asap.

What do you mean this is effective for publicity? Poloniex is dying. A hack which costs it more than a hundred million dollars might be the final nail in the coffin. It's mind-boggling to call this well-planned and that Justin is prepared for this. Even given that Justin is that eccentric clown, I don't know how this could be used in his favor.

Wild guess: is there a breach about personal identity too? Roll Eyes
I think that the way exchanges handle these information is that they do store your Name and address from your KYC verification, but that's normally held in different storage and also exchanges don't keep scan copies of passports/face images etc. Those are supposedly only checked only once by a KYC verification partner and then discarded. At least that's what they usually claim.

Whatever they claim should be taken with a grain of salt. If only we can fully know how irresponsible these platforms are, all their claims could be discarded right away.
742  Economy / Economics / Re: Micheal Salyor decalogue for a 10x Bitcoin Appreciation on: November 12, 2023, 01:30:31 AM
Salor resonated the decalogue in a recent speech at the Australia Crypto Convention:

Was it already complete or it remained lacking? The previous times he mentioned his decalogue, he provided an octalogue and sometimes a nonalogue. LOL!

Anyway, while I agree with many points in his decalogue, I feel like he's exaggerating in his price prediction of Bitcoin. 12 months from now and Bitcoin already hitting $370,000? Come on, that's not realistic. But, of course, such bullish kind of prediction serves him pretty well.

As to fiat's debasement, whether there's Bitcoin or not, fiat is all about it.
743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Whatever happens, hold on to your Bitcoin. on: November 11, 2023, 04:07:10 AM
I would agree that if a bitcoin ETF does get shut down for some reason that the last thing everyone should be doing is going out and selling theirs.  This is of course called "panic selling" and is typically always the wrong idea for "investors".  It would seem to me that an ETF is now inevitable, so if it doesn't pass this coming round for whatever reason, it's only a matter of time until it does.

Indeed. Why is it a big deal now? For numerous times, the SEC has rejected spot Bitcoin ETF applications. As a matter of fact, they denied all of them. Have we panic sold our Bitcoin? Did Bitcoin stop reaching new ATHs? Of course, not.

Today's rejection means a new application tomorrow and so on until such point comes when one is finally approved. When that happens, the others will also be approved. In other words, it's always a matter of when.

There's no reason to lose hope. There's already a futures Bitcoin ETF in the US. There's already spot Bitcoin ETF in other countries. There's no reason why a spot Bitcoin ETF won't get into the US market.
744  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Poloniex hacked, $100M+ stolen on: November 11, 2023, 03:25:36 AM
Justin Sun seems to be gifted; he's got the opposite of the Midas touch. LOL! And he also gets to remain nonchalant despite another debacle, this time happening in his other platform. It must also be another gift.

He seems to have been well prepared for this that he's just recycling his old script. Having your platforms hacked one after another has certain advantages; you just have to Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V, rephrase a little, and, voilà, there's your familiar statement.

Anyway, for the nth time, everybody's reminded of the dangers of centralized exchanges.
745  Economy / Economics / Re: Being rich = not looking at price tag on: November 11, 2023, 02:32:03 AM
You are of the reasonable side, OP. Certainly, you aren't filthy rich. Don't cite me on this because neither am I, but to be really rich is to pay enormous amounts of money for things that otherwise cost only very little.

I'm sure there are dishes out there that are served in very small amounts-- less than a mouthful in fact-- on unreasonably large plates that are very expensive.

To a certain extent, being rich means flying away from reason. Again, I've never been one, so you can challenge me on this, but there is no other way of explaining how a golden toilet paper, for example, is made and actually sold for $1.3 million.
746  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Swedish Bitcoiners targeted by armed criminals on: November 11, 2023, 01:45:28 AM
Before, I wanted to buy apparels with Bitcoin designs. I was discouraged by certain reasons including this possibility. It somehow changed my attitude. Before, I'm eager to dispel doubts of friends and acquaintances on Bitcoin. Today, I prefer to remain silent most of the time. If I share a little knowledge, I prefer not to be too spirited or enthusiastic. There was a time when I wanted to put Bitcoin stickers on all kinds of stuff. Not anymore today. I now avoid being suspected of having so much Bitcoin that I become an attractive target.

Perhaps this situation in Sweden also gives us a lesson or two about openly speaking about Bitcoin. After all, the targets are prominent Bitcoin figures.
747  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Would you Like Your Pension Paid in Bitcoin? on: November 11, 2023, 01:18:06 AM
This is the tragedy of fiat. Not only is it going to lose value through the years as designed, it also loses value due to incompetence, greed, perhaps necessity as well, and all kinds of abuses by the government. All in all, the speed at which our money loses value makes savings worthless.

And this kind of problem prevalent in fiat can be traced back to the very day this soft money has taken over. Another problem that this fiat standard caused is the discrepancy of worth between different fiat currencies, as illustrated by the ratio of your Naira to USD which changed from 150-300 Naira per USD to more than 1000 Naira to USD after just a few years.
748  Economy / Economics / Re: Swiss Franc become a new Cryptocurrency ;D on: November 10, 2023, 03:41:15 AM
This is innovation indeed, but still well within the fiat system. This isn't, therefore, a big deal as if it's something that could compete Bitcoin. In the first place, this is an initiative coming from the central bank. Moreover, this would be rolled out in partnership with traditional banks. There's nothing very special about this. But, of course, we always credit the Swiss Franc for being innovative and for integrating new technologies to its function and development. But the Swiss Franc would only return to its old glory if it goes back to the gold standard. For as long as it follows the debt standard, it remains more or less equal with the rest of the fiat currencies.
749  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Boxing] Jake Paul vs Andre August - December 15th in Florida on: November 10, 2023, 02:52:35 AM
Well, perhaps Jake Paul is indeed trying to become more of a real fighter than just an exhibition boxer. But, of course, while he's now choosing a real boxer this time around, he makes it sure that he's going to be an easy opponent. Hence, a smaller fighter, an old one as well, who is pretty much unknown in the boxing world with less experience, and who has just returned to the ring after some 3 years of inactivity. That's Andre August. But he's probably an improvement in Jake Paul's opponents.
750  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Joining this forum has widen my horizon about Bitcoin . on: November 10, 2023, 02:11:04 AM
You're not alone. As a matter of fact, I guess many of the latest Bitcoin supporters only perceive Bitcoin as a speculative asset or a new investment option. In other words, they are only looking at Bitcoin's USD price. It may not be their fault as they might have been first introduced to it through its price itself, but I hope they will also realize later on that Bitcoin isn't just that. In the first place, Bitcoin is the kind of hard money that the world badly needs now. It has implications in economics, privacy, governance, freedom, human rights, and so on. Isn't Bitcoin interesting?
751  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Will it affect you in any way if Binance completely shuts down ? on: November 10, 2023, 01:44:07 AM
It doesn't have much of an impact because before Binance shuts down completely, Binance will allow all its users to withdraw and move all their assets to other wallets or exchanges.
That is possible that they may give notice before they entirely go on a shutdown. But there can be a reason for a shutdown and one of it is bankruptcy. We've been into belief of their "funds are safu". But what if we see the negative side of theirs that they'll put on a notice that everyone's fund is lost and they're already bankrupt. Like the other known and popular exchanges that are still in contest for the funds of their users that they've kept for all of these years. We have to learn from the experience of others and from the bad ending of other exchanges that we shouldn't trust them wholly.

We never learn from experience, that's why history keeps on repeating over and over again.

It makes me cringe how some people put so much trust on Binance, and other centralized exchanges and platforms for that matter, that they believe it will allow them to withdraw their funds before completely shutting down. That's too naïve of them.

How is that even possible? A centralized exchange going bankrupt but allowing its customers to withdraw their funds first before finally closing down? Are they serious? Do they even know what bankruptcy is? Are they even aware that those centralized exchanges that collapsed were still operating despite insolvency?
752  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Mixing USDT on: November 10, 2023, 01:18:41 AM
This is the first time I've heard of somebody who wishes to use a mixer for USDT. Mixer is for privacy. USDT is the opposite of privacy.

Anyway, I've searched a bit and read about The Crypto Mixer and also USDT-mixer-obfuscator.com. I haven't tried both, so this isn't a recommendation. I don't vouch for them. I can't even access both of them from my location. But you might want to learn more about these two USDT mixers.

But if conversion to XMR serves the same purpose, why the need for a mixer?

This isn't a Bitcoin discussion, by the way.
753  Economy / Economics / Re: How Much Does Food Cost in Your Country? on: November 09, 2023, 04:09:06 AM
The average monthly income here is around $270. That's according to a survey. I have doubts. It could actually be lower in reality. Before anything else, please note that the income disparity in this developing country is very wide, with the top 1% earning 17% of the national income while the bottom 50% shares only 14%.[1]

Although this could highly vary from one place to another, in my city, you can live with more or less $4 a day for food. That's composed of rice and one dish, either meat or vegetable or fish. That's if you prefer to eat at a lowly eatery.

With this income, you still have enough money left for your other expenses like rent, fare, and so on. But you are barely living. Figuratively, you're not even living; you're merely existing. But that's the general condition of the working class here. You wake up, go to work, go home, sleep. You repeat that until you die.

754  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is the Choice of Investors on: November 09, 2023, 02:35:57 AM
The one thing I probably don't find interesting with Ark Invest's Cathie Wood is her overly bullish predictions. She must have her own analyses, of course, but she doesn't seem realistic. As a result, she sounds like she simply wants to cause a FOMO especially among institutions. She was wrong before and has already admitted that they had to temper their assumptions. But even so, they're still convinced that the price could still grow above a million dollars within this decade alone. I highly doubt this, although I wish she ends up proving me wrong.
755  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Never say your recovery seed or private key out loud! on: November 09, 2023, 01:47:23 AM
It's funny how we're starting to mistrust our technologies. But I guess that's just what we need to do in order to protect our privacy. If only we can avoid all of them. I remember the scene in the movie Snowden in which Edward has to hide inside a blanket whenever he types his login information. Eyes and ears are always around us. Unfortunately, however, our smart phones and computers are precisely what they are. To a non-techy person like me, sometimes it makes me paranoid.
756  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you know about the first public servant paid in bitcoin ? on: November 09, 2023, 01:05:37 AM
I haven't heard of this news. Thanks for sharing!

Well, what can I say? This news sounds cute. A town with only 330 people, a police chief who requested that his salary be paid in Bitcoin, and a city commission approving it. That sounds really fun.

In 2013, not many people have heard of Bitcoin. But it seems to me Chief Vaughn didn't have much work to do that he probably had a lot of time to update himself with what's new. He probably studied it deeply to the point that he even requested that he be paid in Bitcoin.

Did Vicco have a nerdy police chief? LOL!
757  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What are some things you should always avoid while gambling ? on: November 09, 2023, 12:37:41 AM
Do not gamble if you are depressed, guilty, feeling desperate, or whenever there's a strong emotion running inside you. You can't gamble when your focus is on something else.

Also, if you are not rich, don't go to a casino or a gambling club bringing so much money. In other words, don't bring with you money which you can't afford to lose even if you're only planning to gamble a small portion of it. If possible, bring only what you intend to gamble. That would also mean you shouldn't be carrying with you your credit and debit cards.
758  Economy / Economics / Re: India is the new economic leader of global south. And replacement for China?... on: November 09, 2023, 12:04:00 AM
Not yet at least. But the general direction is probably going there. With China's labor cost going up higher and India becoming one of the main options for companies exiting China, the potential is there. Not to mention that India is already an industrialized country, its people very able to cater the needs of a globalized world with its English proficiency, its socio-political environment much healthier, and so on.

It doesn't help that China's economy is imploding and its huge real-estate market seems to be in a state of crisis. Problems are rising in the red country.
759  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to value bitcoin and cryptocurrencies? on: November 08, 2023, 03:57:12 AM
There are multiple factors at play in assigning value to Bitcoin. Bitcoin's features are to be considered, of course. The process of producing Bitcoin will have be considered as well. It's not just Bitcoin's decentralized system and limited supply that count but also the fact that a coin costs energy and technologies to produce. Another factor is its relevance and alternatives. Are there other options for those who wish to enjoy the benefits provided by Bitcoin? Is there an urge for people to get into Bitcoin? I think these are all factors, among others, in giving value to Bitcoin.
760  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Information for beginners in the Crypto world on: November 08, 2023, 02:38:40 AM
I think it should be made clear to beginners right from the start what a currency means. A currency is money, a medium of exchange. Cryptocurrency has already grown into something else. So it cannot anymore be defined simply as digital currencies. In the first place, the huge majority of cryptocurrencies nowadays aren't acceptable in any store anywhere in the world.

Second, we have this common assumption that crypto is decentralized. It isn't. There are so many cryptocurrencies that are centralized.

I guess we should avoid equating Bitcoin with cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is cryptocurrency, the real cryptocurrency. But it cannot be vice versa. Not every cryptocurrency is Bitcoin. Others may be saying Bitcoin, not crypto, but I don't agree. Bitcoin is crypto. What is not crypto are those shitcoins claiming to be such.
