7461  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New Feature idea - tracking BTC address balance using the client? on: March 03, 2012, 12:46:01 AM
Since the address is encoded into the URL, my ISP could merely save the places I have visited recently, and bam, someone would know "bitcoin addresses of interest" to me.

There's a URL for that.  Use SSL (https://)

Using https, only the domain IP address is left unencrypted and exposed should your ISP happen to do packet inspection.  The path part and the rest of the URL are protected using SSL encryption.
7462  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins are not, in practice, fungible on: March 03, 2012, 12:22:25 AM
Similar activity (Mt. Gox locking accounts and claiming bitcoins deposited were derived from stolen funds) allegedly occurring following the Linode hack (of wallets at Bitcoinica, Slush, Faucet / etc.):

Quote
Hi,

We have noticed you have deposited recently 7 BTC and have a reason to believe those coins may have come from the coins stolen from Bitcoinica (see the bitcointalk forum for more details).

7463  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchange service, Bitcoins and Paypal on: March 03, 2012, 12:03:46 AM
Does Paypal hates any kind of exchange service, or is it just bitcoin?

It varies.  Second Life Lindens (SLL) from Linden Labs can be purchased using PayPal through VirWoX -- if you don't mind the fees.

But otherwise, almost no exchanges between digital currency or similar to PayPal and then stay open very long.  For example:

7464  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: After 21 million bitcoins have been mined... on: March 02, 2012, 11:53:44 PM
Well, likely none of us will be around when that happens in the next century.  We're more than 40% of the way there, and by December 2016 will be 75% of the way there (15.75 million bitcoins mined), so for the most part how many are issued daily (rate of currency inflation) will become less and less of a factor each day.

Here's some more on that.

And as far as why miners will continue mining even though less currency is issued to them?  Fees will start to become more relevant to miners.

There
was wondering if anyone has thought to sell camping equipment / outdoors goods for btc ?

Bitcoin Deals offers, among tens of thousands of other products, tents and other camping supplies.  For example:

7466  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MTGox Account hacked??? on: March 02, 2012, 09:18:04 PM
I got no emails or anything. What should i do?

Check your spam folder as well, perhaps the change password message got routed there.

I contacted mtgox and waiting.

Assuming this was a support ticket you opened, then you can check an existing request here:

If they haven't yet responded, there's not much you can do.  If there's no response after a reasonable amount of time (e.g., maybe one business day and the ticket has not yet been addressed) then perhaps you can escalate with some prodding on the #mtgox IRC channel on Freenode.

7468  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: BtcBuckets is live/5BTC giveaway! on: March 02, 2012, 08:18:55 PM
Expect some traffic.  The operator of InstaWallet has announced that the service will be shutting down.

One of the challenges InstaWallet faced was performance problems using bitcoind with so much activity occurring.  Is BtcBuckets going to be able to scale?
7469  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Instawallet is shutting down - please withdraw your funds on: March 02, 2012, 08:11:38 PM
Thank you Jav for having created the concept of an anonymous online instant e-wallet service.

I am reminded of the utility of InstaWallet each time I want to hand out a small, sample amount of bitcoins to someone who I wouldn't expect would install the Bitcoin client or to immediately create an account at an exchange.

The service will be missed.  I do see that there is a similar service now available.  Their "Instant Bucket" is pretty similar in functionality to an InstaWallet:

Some of these wallets are held by those who won't learn of this shutdown notice.   Without any way to notify them, some will lose their coins.  Even though the site mentioned recommended usage was only for "small change", I suspect there are some InstaWallets that hold significant amounts.  Would there be some way for wallets (maybe just those over a certain amount) be claimable for an extended period of time?
7470  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: any instawallet users here? on: March 02, 2012, 08:20:37 AM
Assuming you are stuck in n00b jail, I took the liberty of posting your question on the InstaWallet thread on your behalf:

7471  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: New, simple online wallet: www.instawallet.org - no signup required on: March 02, 2012, 08:17:58 AM
There is a question posted asking if InstaWallet is experiencing any problems:

Is something wrong with the site? I'm missing money. And I keep getting a bad gateway message.

I'm suspecting the user cannot post here yet due to n00b status, so I'm posting this on that person's behalf.
7472  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for exchanger seems hard on: March 02, 2012, 07:24:21 AM
You might be able to use OKPay.

Once funds are in OKPay, Mt. Gox is one exchange that lists OKPay as a deposit method.
7473  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Nominal US$ transfers on: March 02, 2012, 06:14:46 AM
OK, in this case I have to put it another way.
I will move the money (not very much) to the first exchange that implements nominal US$ transfers between members.
Also I am ready to pay a reasonable fee for each transfer.

I don't know of any exchanges that offer that.

If you are both in the U.S., one method would be to simply withdraw USD from the exchange into Dwolla and then do a Dwolla account-to-account (A2A) transfer.  Then the recipient can simply move the funds from Dwolla back into the same exchange (e.g., Mt. Gox).  The total cost is $0.25 to you and $0.25 to them.  And the turnaround time is from just a few minutes to about under an hour, depending on the timing of some cron jobs.  Since you aren't ultimately trying to do a bank transfer then neither Dwolla account even needs to have a bank account linked to it then (though if the amount is large enough or other situations exist then Dwolla may ask for proof of identity).

Outside the U.S. you can try about the same tactic using Liberty Reserve as the intermediary.   There are delays and fees though when using LRUSD.
7474  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Max Keiser's website PirateMyFilm.com now accepts Bitcoins! on: March 02, 2012, 04:37:42 AM
The green light is on!  If you didn't get an email, login to PMF and you will see the payment instructions.

It went green being oversubscribed by 45 shares (115% level reserved), thanks to the limit increase a few days ago where the max per-person changed from $25 to $50 (max 5 shares changed to max 10 shares).

This was my first transaction where the merchant was using Bit-Pay.  That worked quite slick.  After I sent payment and refreshed the Bit-Pay invoice page showed a "Bitcoins Paid" field that showed the amount I had just sent.

I got an e-mail from PirateMyFilm after the transaction confirmed (6 confirmations it seems) and when I viewed the project page when logged in it shows my payment status properly.  i.e., all good, I'm now a paid-up and fully registered shareholder for this project!

7475  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Nominal US$ transfers on: March 01, 2012, 11:32:36 PM
There is no information about who and when has redeemed them, sorry.

That information is recorded and accessible by Mt. Gox, and (presumably) reported as part of their their aml compliance.  But you as the sender aren't made aware of that, correct.

Though you don't know when, you can tell if they've been redeemed (as you can cancel any code that hasn't yet been redeemed).
7476  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoinica customer support first impression on: March 01, 2012, 11:22:38 PM
Aren't some gains earned in USDs?

Either way, I don't think it matters for AML reporting purposes.  Other exchanges, for instance, have daily limits that apply to withdrawals of BTCs just as they do for withdrawals of USDs.

Probably what is happening is that the service is not responding on their policy because that policy is still being developed.

7477  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to buy bitcoins with prepaid debit card? on: March 01, 2012, 11:11:29 PM
Hello. The only way I can purchase bitcoins is with a prepaid debit card. Which websites accept this mode of payment? Out of those, which one is the best? Thank you.

Get-Bitcoin will accept a prepaid debit card as a payment method for the purchase of bitcoins:

Another is to trade person-to-person on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace:

7478  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: getting started without the client on: March 01, 2012, 11:04:24 PM
I hate the initial block download delay and don't care about mining myself for now.
what are the best ways to get started with bitcoin without installing the client?
I know it's possible, but would love to have some specific suggestions.

Electrum client, or My Wallet from http://BlockChain.info/wallet are two.

7479  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Nominal US$ transfers on: March 01, 2012, 07:48:55 PM
Maybe there is an answer somewhere but I can't find it.
I just want to know why no exchange allows nominal US$ transfers between members.
Thanks.

Not sure what you asking.  There are many exchanges which operate by matching buyers and sellers where BTCs are traded using USDs (less exchange fee):

There is an over-the-counter exchange where trades occur with no intermediary that performs escrow as well:

7480  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is There Any Way To Sell Digital Products With Bitcoin? on: March 01, 2012, 06:04:43 AM
Selling digital products seems to be pretty easy with Paypal, so is there a way to do it with Bitcoin?

Strongcoin has this:
