7621  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is this roughly how Bitcoin works? on: February 22, 2015, 11:14:58 AM
Basically I could set my old laptop that I dont use anymore to do this on a regular basis correct?  I understand that to really get into this, you do need more computing power than a single old laptop, especially to make more money at it so I would be pretty lucky to get anything.  But thats basically what I could do right?

Basically old laptop would work, but you will waste much more electricity than you get Bitcoins. Even with very specialized ASIC hardware for bitcoin mining you need the most power effecient one + cheap electricity to be profitable.
or you could just steal power from the sun  Roll Eyes

It's easy! Use solar panel! Tongue I recommend not to use a laptop, it become hot too fast. You can get a desktop for cheaper and it won't be hot as laptop.

   -MZ
Use raspberry pi... And also, solar panels do not generate a lot of electricity unless you have a big farm of them. Even so, in cloudy days and at night, no electricity would be generated. Your mining would get disrupted.

Who would their platfrom, even someone want to buy.
IT won't cover 7k BTC Sad

And why some people still use BTER even they already NXT was stolen away
I guess everyone in the NXT hack got refunded, thus giving them an impression that they have the funds to compensate people after that hack. Also, since they had a cold storage in place, people would assume it's a bulletproof solution.
7623  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Getting paid for signature space? on: February 22, 2015, 11:06:32 AM
i'm curious with some elder / hero member that offered their siggy space to advertiser
is one of them get a contract from advertisers?
I mean some user who create a thread, and offered their siggy space. not join available signature campaign

Most signature campaigns don't offer a premium for Hero members, or don't offer thing that some people might want. So people open the topic trying to get better offers
yeah, that's why some hero members make an open thread to get better offers
but it is effective? i didn't see any user who has "custom" signature (personal offer signature)
hero's rate usually only increase 10-20% from sr.member although heroo  activity is twice than sr.

Just a guess, with more experience with Bitcoin as a whole or the forum, hero member would more likely be able to post more constructively than Sr members and contributing more to different threads. If the member is experienced, they would most likely look at his signature and perhaps go to the website.
7624  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would you do if you wanted to stop Bitcoin? on: February 22, 2015, 11:03:31 AM
you could always bribe developers into adding things into the core code (little by little ofcourse) which remove the things we love about btc.  such as the 21m limit.
Bitcoin's core developers aren't as easy to bribe as you think, if the limit gets changed, people would most likely see it by reviewing the source code and don't update. If majority of the network do not agree, a fork will be created which will be useless in destroying Bitcoin.
7625  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Would he be better off with his cpu or his graphics card on: February 22, 2015, 10:56:20 AM
You better mining altcoin which cannot be mined with ASIC
Check here to see best altcoin to mine http://www.coinwarz.com/

Anyway, 650 Ti is pretty poor.
750 Ti is the best price/performance for mining altcoin
ASIC resistant coins that are profitable are already dominated by ex-Bitcoin gpu miners or CPU miner, not such a good solution.
7626  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I get rid of dust in my wallet? on: February 21, 2015, 03:41:21 PM
How do we use coin control? Is it automatically calculated minimum tx fee?
Sending without fee is always an option if you have time.
Coin control is a feature that lets user to choose their inputs usually for anonymity purposes but sometime also to prevent high transaction fees from using too much inputs. Tx fees are calculated in clients based on the amount you choose, if you have one.
7627  Other / Meta / Re: How to gain trust? on: February 21, 2015, 02:04:06 PM
correct...
activity counter it is auutomatically updated from Bitcointalk forum engine...

to increase trust counter, other users, must explicitly post new feedback form the link below
change 123456 with your uid

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=123456

Wrong! Activity updates only if you make atleast 1 post in 2 weeks period. It is same for trust rating, it will only increase if a person from DefaultTrust list or on a user's trust list put a trust feedback.

   -MZ
If your post count is below your activity points(activity points you can use) you must post more to see your activity count increase. Your activity point is like a limit, limit increases as more active 2 weeks period you gain. People not from your trust list will not appear as trusted feedback but as untrusted feedback. Trust list is different for everyone if they modify it so trust rating will appear differently.
7628  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BTER Unable to Repay Customers on: February 21, 2015, 01:05:13 PM
A cold storage shouldn't be hacked so easily. I highly suspect that it is a inside job. For a cold storage to be hacked, the RNG must first be compromised. If the RNG is indeed compromised, it implies that the exchange hasn't verified the source code themselves and risk customer's funds.
7629  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Block chain size/storage and slow downloads for new users on: February 21, 2015, 01:01:02 PM
Flash media is ideal for that usage because it's cheap, has standard capacities similar to blockchain size, is efficient with random read-only access, and the blockchain copy can easily be updated from time to time with new blocks accumulated on the hard disk. That's also better for your hard disk health and availability.
Unfortunately the very high write amplification caused by bitcoind will also kill any flash device in a few years.

There's quite bit of work that needs to be done to safely run Bitcoin on a flash device for extended time periods. I'm not aware of any open-source flash-specific database engines.
A normal thumbdrive would be able to last quite sometime even with high IO usage. A few years is already considered long and flash drives would be much cheaper then. A better idea is to use your old harddisk and hook it up to your computer. If you aren't in need of the features available only in Bitcoin Core/ other full chain client, don't use it. A normal SPV client is secure enough for daily usage.
7630  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I get rid of dust in my wallet? on: February 21, 2015, 12:55:56 PM
why do you need a program for this? you can easily use blockchain.info as OP says he is using and send all your btc to a new address which will get rid of the dust for you and also creates an address with a single input
I have enough dust that the fees would actually be higher than the total value of the dust. There are methods to remove dust by sending them as miner's fees (https://github.com/petertodd/dust-b-gone), but I want to rescue the dust and consolidate it into usable inputs. DannyHamilton's method would allow for this and require 0 fees.
no doubt about what danny said. but what i meant was the thing that i did to get rid of my dust.
i had small transactions from 5000 satoshi to 100,000 satoshies and i send the whole lot of them to another address of mine with a 0 fee and after a couple of days the tx got confirmed
If the inputs are new, they may not get confirmed very fast due to the low coin age.  You are lucky that your transaction is below 1kb as transaction higher than 1kb confirm very slowly or never confirms without fees. It is not recommended to spend dust without fees if the coins have to confirm urgently.

7632  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can someone tell me which is the most secure of the offline wallets? on: February 21, 2015, 09:55:34 AM
the most secure wallet is what "you" make most secure

there is no such thing as most secure. you can lose all of them if you don't them secure enough

Actually yes their is a such thing as "most secure"its called a wallet that hasn't seen the light of the internet. Their always has to be that one guy who comments just to stir up some senseless debate.
actually you didn't quite understand my comment. even a paper wallet can not be secure as long as you don't keep it safe. it can be lost damaged or even be stolen!
If you keep a few backups of them at different geographical places and the wallet is encrypted with password, it would be more than secure since the funds cannot be stolen without password.
7633  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to invest on: February 21, 2015, 07:04:30 AM
you should try to invest in stocks , or maybe just bitcoin and wait couple of years until the price pumps up

also you can invest in gambling sites like just-dice(i think they are the best site where you can invest)

Thats right! Casino investment are the best way...
Put 125000 to red and if u lose then double it up with 250000.
U wont miss... ^^
I hope you are kidding, you would surely lose your money. I think you misunderstood his meaning. Just-dice allows users to invest in their bank other than betting. This can be a way to profit since mathematically, the house edge is -ve therefore the probability of losing the funds when gambling is higher.

But the price of the currency they use could go down and you will use all profits.
There are plenty of casinos offering investment options in Bitcoin. Sure it is a risk, but just-dice is the most trustable right now and clam is relatively stable and you can also claim free clams if your address is old with a non dust value.
it has been stated many many times. gambling is not Investment. it is a game to SPEND money not to earn money. yes you MIGHT win and make a profit but mostly you will lose and lose your money
That is why investment option exist, users are more likely to lose than win, thus giving investors an edge to win. Site owners can then earn commission from profits. Gambling is of course not an investment, it should be viewed as a way of entertainment.
7634  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin investment ? Cloud mining ? on: February 21, 2015, 07:00:57 AM
I would absolutely suggest trading. Bitcoin hasn't found its bottom yet, nor did it stabilise. You can play off volatility well, but only after doing some research on trading and how it should be done.
i would suggest trading too. BUT it is not like you can just wake up some morning and say i am going to start trading BTC. it needs experience or information otherwise you will lose money
Also, there have been many exchanges which got hacked, you may lose money in the process of trading. It comes with much more risk than you think.
7635  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: help mee ... on: February 21, 2015, 06:57:57 AM
Easiest way would be selling stuff on the Goods board for btc or offering services to other members on the forum.

Sig campaigns can pay fairly well but you'd need to post a lot of comments to make anywhere near 0.5 btc.

Speaking of Sig campaigns, the OP would have to join a pay per post Sig campaign similar to one I'm joined in, be a Senior or higher member, post around 400 times in 1 month's time, and qualify in the top 10 posters to get the 0.1 BTC bonus.

So 400 * 0.001 BTC per post = 0.4 BTC + 0.1 BTC Bonus = 0.5 BTC just from a Sig campaign.

Of course your posts would have to be quality, and not spam or rubbish posts, but yes, it's attainable just by doing what you do in this forum.

True dat, but the amount of time invested in posting 400 non-spam comments every month, it would probably be less hassle to get a part time job and buy btc with your wages?

Depends where do you live(y I made the calculations). Also don't forget to include the hidden expenses you get by having another daily job and the extra time you spend.

Not discussing the assumption that there are an endless offer of part time jobs floating around and everyone can get one with no efford
If you live in a place where the wages are low, the electrical fees and internet fees would also be high, spending a few hours a day posting 14 constructive posts can be a tiring job and the electricity cost would also be quite high. In a more developed country, electrical fees may be low but the wages would be much higher, if you work overtime, the signature campaign may not be a good option if you spend time at home typing rather than working overtime.

Some other options besides are fireproof wallets:

http://cryptocards.co/

Plenty of options to secure your offline stash.

These are nice!
Cool idea to have you're public address in a card and simply put it on your wallet, I always have it on my phone but it's stressful when the battery dies.

It's cool to have your public key printed/carved on to something which looks good but it is bad idea to have a private key there.

   -MZ
I don't see it as a bad idea, encrypt it with BIP38 and it would be safe even if someone sees the card. To prevent the loss of the item, you can always write the key on several papers and place it on different geographical location.
7637  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Newbie Question ] Bitcoin Tx FEE's on: February 21, 2015, 06:51:59 AM
From what I have always understood although I could be wrong is that the tx fee can be changed if the market cap rises really high. I may be wrong, but I remember someone telling me that a couple months ago.

Even if the tx is changed,

It is still very expensive since the value would be so high.
A fork can be made to further increase the number of zeros in front of satoshi. It isn't a problem, the problem is many private keys with BTC inside has been lost and the total bitcoin in circulation will never be 21million, it is very unlikely for Bitcoin to reach a market cap of 100trillion.
7638  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would you do if you wanted to stop Bitcoin? on: February 21, 2015, 03:47:29 AM
"What would you do if you wanted to stop Bitcoin?"

Well with unlimited funds

They could buy up a lot of miners 25-40% of the hashrate

Modify the software to mine block in 30 seconds or less (20x faster)

Mine ahead of main chain a few blocks

Collect all the DDOS machines, Switch software back to the same as main block, Attack all the main mining pools,
Enter main chain and have the longest chain

...
All the coins are now on the attackers wallet
..everyone's wallets empty! and it would be worthless in 120 blocks with the fork?

Yes the part of the enter of the main chain is a bit tricky but stranger things have happened in the past..
Imagine the amount of space needed to house a few million hardwares, not very feasible. You won't be able to modify the protocol unless you convince everyone to use it, having 51% of the hashrate won't allow you to do that. Mining pools aren't that easy to attack due to their ddos migration system. P2pool is even harder with so much nodes. AFAIK, you can't reverse or empty other's wallet or transaction.

Should be thankful they have stopped they can get real annoying!
Not all of us are, they are useful for pm notification and other stuff as I want to know that I received a pm. If you feel that it is annoying, change the settings in the profile for email accordingly.
