781  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Privacy Coins on: January 26, 2018, 05:20:49 PM
i would only trust a privacy coin with the privacy as an innate part of the code. there seem to be quite a few with an extra layer glued on top of it and the chances are it'll crack eventually.
782  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: The BEST BOOKS to learn how to invest in crypto? on: January 26, 2018, 04:16:33 PM
don't look for crypto specific books. there aren't very many of them. look for books about how minds work for all markets. all markets ultimately involve people and they all behave the same.

783  Economy / Exchanges / Re: 2017 Bitcoin Debit Card Reviews on: January 26, 2018, 04:05:59 PM
I don't think any MasterCard is using Wavecrest. Only AdvCash did and they went down. It was expected after the shut down of their visa program as well. Either there is a crackdown again crypto-supporting pre-paid cards or (most possibly) Wavecrest was not compliant with EU rules and she went down.

wavecrest weren't satisfying visa's rules. that's the reason they got shut down. there was also new regulation in gibraltar that passed on january first relating to crypto but i'm not sure whether that's directly related.

as there is no other eu based visa issuer i'm wondering whether wavecrest were the only ones brave enough to try it or dumb enough to ignore something. it can't be visa as a whole as cards are still possible in america.

https://www.sec.gov/fast-answers/answersponzihtm.html

"What are some Ponzi scheme "red flags"?
Many Ponzi schemes share common characteristics. Look for these warning signs:

High investment returns with little or no risk. Every investment carries some degree of risk, and investments yielding higher returns typically involve more risk. Be highly suspicious of any "guaranteed" investment opportunity.

Overly consistent returns. Investment values tend to go up and down over time, especially those offering potentially high returns. Be suspect of an investment that continues to generate regular, positive returns regardless of overall market conditions.

Unregistered investments. Ponzi schemes typically involve investments that have not been registered with the SEC or with state regulators. Registration is important because it provides investors with access to key information about the company's management, products, services, and finances.

Unlicensed sellers. Federal and state securities laws require investment professionals and their firms to be licensed or registered. Most Ponzi schemes involve unlicensed individuals or unregistered firms.

Secretive and/or complex strategies. Avoiding investments you do not understand, or for which you cannot get complete information, is a good rule of thumb.
Issues with paperwork. Do not accept excuses regarding why you cannot review information about an investment in writing. Also, account statement errors and inconsistencies may be signs that funds are not being invested as promised.

Difficulty receiving payments. Be suspicious if you do not receive a payment or have difficulty cashing out your investment. Keep in mind that Ponzi scheme promoters routinely encourage participants to "roll over" investments and sometimes promise returns offering even higher returns on the amount rolled over."

so bitconnect fulfilled every single criteria for a ponzi scheme. and it had the courtesy to prove it as well. i feel for anyone who lost money but i'm also disgusted at them for being that blinkered and dumb.
785  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-01-25] ✔ Ripple warns of Bitcoin ‘civil war’..... on: January 26, 2018, 03:01:57 PM
they're a little late to this particular party. and this is what a properly non centralised coin and market looks like. it's ugly but the fact it can happen is also weirdly reassuring.

anyway i think the peak of the 'civil war' has passed. if bcash was gonna really eat bitcoin's lunch it would be further along than it is now. it's always gonna be a thing but not the daddy.
786  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 50 Cent Forgets He Accepted Bitcoin for Album, Finds $7 Million Pile of Bitcoin on: January 26, 2018, 01:41:13 PM
At least it's better than what Lily Allen did, she outright refused to accept Bitcoin for a private concert, granted that Bitcoin was worth a bit less than today.
But now I'm wondering if he actually managed those Bitcoins himself or if he just had someone from his staff manage it.

Also, I'm wondering if this will have any implication on his bankruptcy, I take it he had those coins when he filed?

i'm pretty sure lily allen was getting mixed up with linden dollars or whatever it was back in the day.

i do hope 50 cent had someone on the ball when he set up his wallet. if it was a pure gimmick the chances are high those coins are lost for good if they didn't bother to back anything up.
787  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-01-25] UK Prime Minister to Look at Bitcoin Action ‘Very Seriously' on: January 26, 2018, 12:41:23 PM
The banks in the UK must be pressuring her to do something about bitcoin and the cryptospace before it gets out of control. They also cannot risk their government look as if they do not have control over its country's financial system. I reckon they might follow what China did.

In any case, what is the situation of bitcoin and altcoins over there these days? Is there really a ban, or are the people there not listening hehehe?

there is no ban there. there is a de facto ban from banks. they never have wanted anything to do with it and they still don't. the only time businesses related to crypto have gotten an account was when they lied to the bank.

788  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Today is the first settlement day for the new CME group Bitcoin futures contract on: January 26, 2018, 03:48:50 AM
I hope this doesn’t turn into a monthly pump and dump.

Okcoin futures often were when people paid attention to them. This is potentially a much bigger deal so I fully expect it to become one.
789  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-01-25] UK Prime Minister to Look at Bitcoin Action ‘Very Seriously' on: January 26, 2018, 02:35:57 AM
crypto is already effectively banned in the uk by the banking cartels. if the uk government was sensible they'd issue some regulations so proper exchanges could open and the p2p channels started to wither.

for a country that's been at the forefront of market innovation i find it really weird how the british government has almost totally ignored this area. imagine how much further ahead japan will be in a few short years from now.
790  Economy / Economics / Re: Bankers are killing the cryptocurrency market on: January 26, 2018, 02:27:41 AM
i think the op is confusing market caps with real money. you couldn't take 1% of the market cap out of most of those coins without them collapsing to zero. those huge volumes are the same coins being cycled around the exchanges.

it's not bankers. it's people. most people are greedy and they're seeing crypto as the easy way to get rich. that's what people want.

791  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Criteria to be listed on Binance on: January 26, 2018, 02:16:05 AM
it has to be a core team member who makes the application. they ain't gonna accept an application from some moon kid. then you have to pass the vote. and then i've heard they demand some really crazy sums of money on top.

i don't think they care about how sound a coin is. they're in it for the money.
792  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin for Survivalists on: January 26, 2018, 12:19:22 AM
I don't subscribe to any of this myself, I'm just making a point that the people who actually believe this stuff might affect the status of Bitcoin as a store of value.

I reckon that for every person who keeps gold under their bed, there will eventually be someone who buys bitcoin for the same spurious / paranoid reasons.

Which is ultimately good in the long term for Bitcoin.

there are degrees of survivalism. the metal coin hoarders seem to be expecting a return to sub medievalism. i don't think people like that will ever subscribe to something like bitcoin.

then there are people who want to insure themselves against their currency collapsing but life remaining pretty much the same once it's all been ironed out. there are people using bitcoin for things like that right now in places like south america.
793  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is stuck at $10k dollars, what is wrong with you people? on: January 26, 2018, 12:15:21 AM
Well last month the guy that said BTC was going to 10K turned out right and now he is saying it is going to 5K

i'm bored of you spamming this creep. go do it in another forum.

10k bitcoin and people are sad? look how freaking far we've come since a year or two back. the fact that the five figure level is proving to be a sticky one still amazes me.
794  Economy / Economics / Re: France declares war on the cryptocurrencies on: January 26, 2018, 12:04:38 AM
In case if the decision on the fight against bitcoin the price can fall to zero.

this won't happen. look to places like china. they've done all they can to squash bitcoin. people have moved to telegram groups and are trading with each other. if it happens in other countries the same will occur too.

i don't buy the line of an illegal bitcoin being more desirable. that's dumb. it's not a drug and if it's illegal it's less useful, but it still has useful properties.

i expect what they'll do is reaffirm what's already in place - lots of kyc on exchanges and any service that's custodial. look to the new york bitlicence for the endgame for that attitude. it's onerous but doable.
795  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin for Survivalists on: January 25, 2018, 11:57:43 PM
nope. in a truly survivalist situation the internet will be toast. no one will want anything virtual.

and the same goes for gold. gold's valuation is an abstraction possible due to a functioning society so all these survivalists are morons for holding it. it has no intrinsic value. there won't be any industry using it. who the hell wants jewellery if you can't feed yourself?

the only currency anyone will accept is food, mediciine or weapons and ammuntion - the stuff you actually need to stay alive.
796  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Was mining always this difficult to get into? on: January 25, 2018, 11:53:14 PM
i'm seeing gpu miners popping up in threads in forums completely unrelated to crypto so it looks like it's still pretty easy and it's kind of weird seeing mining go so mainstream.

and for bitcoin i was under the impression that the price was so high even older stuff could make a little in recent times. of course when it began in 2009 you could've done it on a $100 laptop.

i'm trying to build a gaming rig right now and didn't realise how bad the gpu supply and price situation had gotten for people who actually want to game with them. it's crazy out there.
797  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Which privacy centric coins will make it? on: January 25, 2018, 11:45:57 PM
monero.

zcash had that weird 'trusted' beginning. monero also has many sensible features such as flexible block size and ongoing inflation that any coin that really wants to be used properly should have.

they're all gonna have problems from governments though. i can see exchanges being pressured to delist anything fully private.
798  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ⚛️ [ANN] Bitcoin Atom - Fork 1:1 of Bitcoin - Atomic Swap Powered ⚛️ on: January 24, 2018, 03:31:44 PM
Anyone who kept coins in coinbase will not get this fork. If you haven't moved them before that block you're out of luck.

If it is a huge success they might do it. It's entirely under their control.
799  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ⚛️ [ANN] Bitcoin Atom - Fork 1:1 of Bitcoin - Atomic Swap Powered ⚛️ on: January 24, 2018, 03:43:23 AM
Splitting coins is easy as long as there are wallets for them.

To be fair on bitlish then of course a new fork won't go on a premier league exchange.

Still, there ain't no hurry.
800  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ⚛️ [ANN] Bitcoin Atom - Fork 1:1 of Bitcoin - Atomic Swap Powered ⚛️ on: January 24, 2018, 03:07:04 AM
Thanks for the alternative path...I was under the impression that if you don't have your Bitcoin on one of the Bitcoin Atom-partnered exchanges, you won't get the additional BCA token just because you own Bitcoin.

nope. all you need is bitcoin private keys. that's how all bitcoin forks work. no one would bother if you had to put bitcoins into an unknown exchange. to move them you do indeed need a bitcoin atom wallet.
