81  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger library possibly compromised on: December 14, 2023, 07:27:15 PM
former Ledger Employee

Oh that's ok then I guess... see Ledger is definitely not at fault there, it's the evil former Employee with a capital E.

An even worse scenario would be if a Ledger employee is behind the code modification and phishing attack themselves.

I'd say a 90%+ chance that's the case. It would be very difficult for an outsider to be able to figure out this whole attack without inside help. Not only do you have to phish the right person but also know which part of the code to replace so that it goes unnoticed long enough to conduct this attack.
82  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BPIP] Bitcointalk Public Information Project [Back in Action] on: December 14, 2023, 05:49:36 PM
But some pages are not loading or take more time than usual but homepage is still the one facing attack so it is not coming up no matter how many times refreshing it.

I have replaced it with a dummy page that should now have a link to the real home page but it probably won't last long until it gets attacked too. Unfortunately this will be a long story until the attackers run out of fresh IPs.

Edit: grammar.
83  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [β] BPIP Extension: user info & extra features add-on/extension, Firefox/Chrome on: December 14, 2023, 05:40:36 PM
Should be ok now, at least for a while until the DDOSing asshole figures out a way to bypass the blacklists.

Sorry about the issues.
84  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BPIP] Bitcointalk Public Information Project [Back in Action] on: December 14, 2023, 05:37:36 PM
The website may or may not be up... kinda schroedinger's situation we have going on now, blocking around 1 million requests per minute but there is still a bunch that get through so it may occasionally appear running for some users and dead for others. Extension might be more stable, it uses less bandwidth than webpages.
85  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BPIP] Bitcointalk Public Information Project [Back in Action] on: December 14, 2023, 01:33:00 PM
Yeah looks like DDOS. Not much I can do about that. As I said in the other thread, the forum is full of deranged trolls with nothing better to do. BPIP is only known or useful to bitcointalkers so no one else would have any interest in bringing it down.
Could it be the DDOS started after this post?
by the way - can you or @ibminer update the donators page in bpip
Call me paranoid, but it could be related.

Yes, I think there is a good chance that either the above, or me labeling these fine individuals as "deranged trolls", or a combination thereof might have resulted in this situation. Too much of a coinkydinky.
86  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BPIP] Bitcointalk Public Information Project [Back in Action] on: December 14, 2023, 12:35:33 PM
My guess is a DDoS or maybe a hung up process in IIS, but I need to wait for suchmoon to confirm, the commands needed to show resource information like this aren't really available on a shell/terminal user account. Server is still partially accessible on my end though, IIS appears running, but everything is very slow. The 503 error sort of hints towards a resource issue, one way or the other.

by the way - can you or @ibminer update the donators page in bpip to point to BitMixList.org instead of .com?

Sure thing, I think ibminer has already taken care of that.

is talking about me

Awww so cute that you recognize yourself from that description.

BTW I also don't think you're enough of a keyboard warrior to actually report the website, but that doesn't excuse your trollfuckery... I mean you're admitting you have no clue what you're talking about, why are you even here (rhetorical question, don't bother).

whatever I have said so far against mixers was only based on Bitcointalk posts

Lie with dogs, wake up with fleas.
88  Other / Meta / Re: Second chances on: December 13, 2023, 08:47:15 PM
Because not every banned user filed an appeal to be unbanned, this is a fantastic opportunity for those who departed with a clear conscience and those who were wrongfully banned for a single offence.

If they didn't care enough (or didn't know how) to file an appeal, how would this thread help? Are the admins going to e-mail every banned user? Or is this targeted only towards ban-evading users who are assumed to be following meta dramas closely enough to notice this thread?

Whatever the idea behind this thread is, I don't get why that effort shouldn't be applied to handling the actual ban appeals the way these appeals were intended to work.

89  Economy / Lending / Re: In Need of a $10k Loan, Collateral Available on: December 13, 2023, 08:24:58 PM
So what did the bank manager say when you walked in and offered your domain as collateral for a loan?
90  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov aka Symmetrick be in DT1? on: December 13, 2023, 02:27:09 PM
We all make mistakes. Sometimes I could be wrong, you could be wrong too. But, if you believe you are always right and unable to accept your mistakes, this is enough reason for your downfall. That was the case with Ratimov. He could have managed these things very well. He is not a scammer. All he had to do is, accept the mistake and promise to correct himself. Instead, he started digging his own grave.

In Ratmetric's case, it's not just one "mistake", it's the overall attitude towards the forum as a cow that has to be milked at any cost. Old toothless cow but it does sometimes kick those entitled farmers in the face.
91  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin's privacy battle and an ominous warning to the community on: December 13, 2023, 02:09:58 PM
so it would've meant that a bitcointalk user reported it, which doesn't make sense.
It makes sense to me.
Not all bitcointalk members have good intentions, and some of them have nothing better to do in life than to report stuff they don't like or support.
I am sure hosting providers now have AI bots, so that could also be one of the reasons.

I have no doubt that a bitcointalker reported the site to the hosting provider. There are some really deranged trolls here with huge axes to grind against mixers, including some posting in this thread. Hosting providers, particularly the reseller types that employ chat bots as "support", don't really have the resources to police the content proactively, and don't have the resources to properly review complaints either. That's why the excuse keeps changing and they won't back down not so much because of money laundering / "cryptocurrency" / etc, but because it's too much hassle for them and they want this client to go away.
92  Other / Meta / Re: Second chances on: December 12, 2023, 05:04:15 PM
Ban appeal process already exists. Most of ban appeal threads however don't even get an acknowledgment from the admins, like "hey, we reviewed your case, you will not be unbanned because x, y, and z, have a good day", or "here's a 2 year sig ban, don't make us regret it".

This seems like one of those useless things that some (or most) governments do when they have a dysfunctional bureaucratic process for some trivial thing, and instead of fixing it they slap another layer of arbitrary randomness on top of it. Someone who tried to do it the right way gets fuck all, but someone who happens to take advantage of the new loophole may get lucky.

93  Economy / Reputation / Re: Ratimov sold his account on: December 12, 2023, 04:41:36 PM
However, I don't think he is gone for good, he probably uses some different account now, maybe someone (or AI) recognizes his writing style in future.

He might have had another account for a while... he bragged about making 3 BTC on the forum but the math doesn't add up, he would have needed 2-3 accounts to do that Grin

94  Other / Meta / Re: Second chances on: December 12, 2023, 02:44:43 PM
Great candidate for holiday forgiveness, WO merit-whoring spammer. Unban this user and grant them 500 merits because holidays.

95  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: December 12, 2023, 01:32:39 PM
No one cares what you trust or not. Without any concrete evidence you can not leave a negative feedback to an account. Let's see what your feedback starts with

How much more evidence does one need that dealing with Ratmetric would be high risk?

Petulant deleting of posts, rescinding sponsorship ("donation" LOL), removing trust ratings/inclusions/exclusions, name change, e-mail/password change, the list goes on and on. Not even talking about the verbal attacks on anyone who dares to mention him (freedom of speech FTW).

Alleged sale of the account is just one of many issues with this user. I can't blame anyone for adding red trust - there is enough stuff going on with it to call it "high risk".
96  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russian Invasion of Ukraine[In Progress] on: December 11, 2023, 07:13:56 PM
Russia is producing 85,000 shells a month right now

Russia spends about 20,000 artillery shells daily

Nothing could possibly go wrong with this brilliant strategy.
97  Other / Meta / Re: A small merit-sending UI tweak on: December 10, 2023, 02:42:32 AM
I don't like "1-50" as a placeholder. If you know nothing about merits, that doesn't really help you. 1 minus 50 so... -49 ??

I'm not a fan of placeholders in general, they tend to be styled barely visible and disappear when you need them.

I'd say leave it empty. Add an explanation above/below if needed. That page has enough space, even on a phone screen. Ensure the field is focused automatically so that the user can just type in the number and hit enter ("autofocus" attribute IIRC).
98  Other / Meta / Re: Merit earned on deleted or short posts on: December 10, 2023, 02:25:46 AM
Hmm... perhaps average/median/standard deviation/etc might be useful here. I have no idea if my percentages are good or bad. Not that it matters much TBH, I'm not gonna start writing longer or shorter posts because of this.

Also top 50 would be interesting.
99  Other / Meta / Re: BCT vs BTT abbreviation for this forum on: December 08, 2023, 08:55:16 PM
Just call it BT (it's "Bitcoin", not "BitCoin" or "BiTcoin") and avoid the issue, but I personally prefer "forum". Only slightly longer than an acronym and saves my arthritic fingers from having to use Shift.
100  Economy / Reputation / Re: Ratimov sold his account on: December 08, 2023, 04:14:51 PM
Has anyone sent a message informing him of this thread or asking him to defend himself? That would be a good starting point, if he declines or whatnot, then we go from there. I'm sure he will decline to comment, but someone should at least inform him so he is aware.

He's fully aware. There is a good chance that the alleged new owner isn't quite as proficient in English, and posting via Google Translate / ChatGPT is cumbersome.
