81  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: August 08, 2019, 09:54:15 PM
Thank you guys, that was really helpful!
Now I'll start reading about the changes in LND and I'll try to upgrade my Raspberry to the latest release
(Or I'll start from scratch, maybe it's better)
So at first I don't mind if it will slow down from time to time but if it will happen frequently I know now where to find a nice solution for the problem Smiley
82  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: August 07, 2019, 08:51:35 PM
Hi,
I've read the FAQ and have a simple question:
I know that it's possible to run a LN node on Raspberry PI (because I have one and I had a node on it in 2017 (I know, long time ago))
Fees has settled and I've switched off the node and forgot about it, it's in the drawer, untouched since the power off.
It was a neutrino node (without the copy of the blockchain downloaded locally)

So my question is:
If I just switch it on, it will be really outdated (it was an LND node)

Does it worth the time and the energy to start again with a Raspberry PI? (I have it, I won't use it for anything else, and I don't want to sell it, so if it won't be painfully slow or useless, is there any reason why not to play with it again?)

If it's OK to start a node on Raspberry, which one would you recommend?
Is neutrino a working solution now (it was in a really beta state in 2017), or I should attach a HDD to the PI with the blockchain, downloaded previously with a PC, and start a full node?

Thanks for the answers in advance, I'm not lazy to read and to search, but I need someone to show the right direction before I start searching and reading a lot Smiley
83  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Hardware Wallet on: July 31, 2019, 09:26:40 PM
...

I think the Wallet Trezor is the best to use in a real wallet the biggest advantage to buying a Trezor wallet is that it is the safest way to store your cryptocurrency. To get a better understanding of why it is so secure, I am now going to explain how it works. The first thing to consider is that your private key is always kept offline, meaning that it never has a direct connection to the internet. This is completely different to storing your cryptocurrencies on a desktop, mobile or web wallet, as hackers are always finding new ways to infect it with a virus or malware.
Just for the record, hardware wallets are always keep your private key offline, not just Trazor but Ledger, etc. too.
This is why they are hardware wallets. They do the magic (creating a seed (and the bitcoin address), signing transactions, etc.) inside their hardware and they just send those information to the connected computer/phone etc. which is publicly visible anyway (no private keys are sent back and forth to the device, there's no need to), so this is how they work, doesn't matter which one you choose, they work like this.
The difference is in the details, the operating interface on the web/computer/phone, the compatibility with alts, but this is where you should start to read about them and make your decision.
The basics (and the security of the well known hardware wallets) are nearly the same.
84  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to secure your Recovery seed or Mnemonic phrase? on: July 29, 2019, 09:08:02 PM
What if you don't use password but use a cryptosteel kind of solution, but you cut your seed into half, and engrave the first part on one steel (it can be a steel business card, you can find it on eg. ebay) and the second part on another steel.

A half of a seed can be enough to crack the whole seed, depending on attacker's capabilities. Electrum seeds have 135 bits of entropy, and 67.5 bits can be cracked on modern hardware.

Plus, you are making things harder for yourself by having parts of your seed in different places. There are better schemes for that like Shamir's Secret Sharing or good old multisig - they even allow N of M parts setups, so you can account for risks of losing some of the parts of the wallet.
That's good to know, thank (the cracking of the seed)
Well, just make 3 or 4 parts and spread it Cheesy
I know that's a bit oldschool solution, but I'm not familiar with that passphrase.
I know that Electrum has a possibility to use a password, also Trezor and maybe Ledger Nano has also something similar (Trezor for sure), but I don't know if they are cross compatible or not.
If you just want to store an amount in a wallet (even in a normal address not segwit etc... just the old style solution which is compatible with all kind of wallets for now and forever Smiley ) you don't want to use any possible incompatible solution just to increase the security.
Multisig is another good solution, I'll have a closer look at it, thanks Smiley
85  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is better? Using one storage option or using several methods? - Bitcoin. on: July 28, 2019, 08:53:10 PM
...

Storing on a third-party service/platform already negates the fact that you own those coins. Not your private key? Not your bitcoin. They can literally screw you in any way possible and they'll just take jail time, serve their sentence and enjoy the rewards they have reaped after they got out. Perhaps a little bit of trading money would be okay, but large amounts? No, just no.

That's the key, own the private key and that's all.
If you use different kind of wallets (hardware wallet, paper wallet, brain wallet (when you memorize the seed Cheesy )) or any other kind of wallet when you have your private key, that would be fine for risk management.
If you use only one wallet, you risk your coins more. If you use different hardware wallets for example and put only part of your coins into them, you run less risk.
Just don't think about your coins on 3rd party exchanges like truly yours unless you have already withdrawn them successfully into your own offline wallet...
86  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to secure your Recovery seed or Mnemonic phrase? on: July 28, 2019, 08:30:14 PM
No way would I use something like a cryptosteel or something simply written down in an accessible manner. You never know who's going to uncover it. The days of few people knowing what a seed consists of are drawing to a close.

Which is why some schemes allow you to add password to your seed, so the seed alone is not enough to access the wallet, because private keys are derived from both the seed and the password. I personally don't use this method, because I use Electrum and it doesn't have this option, but even if I could, I still wouldn't because it just adds just the complexity of storing password somewhere. I'd rather not risk locking myself out of my coins because of a misplaced password.
What if you don't use password but use a cryptosteel kind of solution, but you cut your seed into half, and engrave the first part on one steel (it can be a steel business card, you can find it on eg. ebay) and the second part on another steel.
After, you hide these half parts in totally different places (in your home, or the first one in your home, the second one in your realtive's home, etc...) and you're fine
You only have to remember which is the first one and which is the second part, not to mess the order...
And don't use a computer based laser engraver but a handheld type engraver (offline one Cheesy ) not to expose your seed...
87  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: It can be done on: July 26, 2019, 10:32:53 PM
Nice job OP Smiley
One more thing you can do is to merit those who are in need, if you have a few spandable merits...
It's really not easy to rank up, because of the merit system, you have already experienced it, so help the others who deserve it to rank up too...
Keep up the good work and aim for the next rank Smiley
88  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Can We Expect A Legally Compliant Bitcoin Bank Soon? on: July 26, 2019, 09:49:23 PM
To become a legal bank in a country, you should comply with the local law.
If you want to be a bank, you should implement AML & KYC too.
Let's say, you (as a bitcoin bank) will implement these AML & KYC regulations somehow, and you identify every customer before you let them do a wire transfer or withdraw their money.
In this case you'll be a real legal bitcoin bank but only a few people will use your services because most of the people nowdays use bitcoin and other cryptos because the lack of AML and KYC...
89  Economy / Economics / Re: Can Blockchain Replace Banks? on: July 26, 2019, 09:35:11 PM
Many crypto enthusiasts believes that blockchain and cryptocurrencies will replace banks and run the financial structures someday. Blockchain can be use by all kinds of sectors in economy like banking and finance. Instead of replacing it, blockchain technology will transform the banking industry into more efficient financial institution. So I believe that blockchain is not an enemy of banks but a friendly technology to modernize or disrupt its services in the future.
Blockchain can help banks to give the same service with lower costs (for the bank), because if a lot of inner procedures could be automated in a blockchain system (not bitcoin's blockchain but the bank's own or a country's own blockchain system), this doesn't mean that:
1. people will notice anything about it (if banks start to use blockchain or not)
2. banks will reduce their fees because of the cheaper cost structure (because of the use of blockchain and the automatized processes)
So as long as someone won't be able to create a blockchain based solution that can do everything that a bank could do (lending, credit cards, mortgages, etc...) banks will remain.
This blockchain based solution that will be able to do everything in the future that a bank could do would become a bank sooner or later because AML and KYC....
90  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to secure your Recovery seed or Mnemonic phrase? on: July 26, 2019, 08:36:56 PM
People tend to think that storing a seed safely and securely is a kind of really hard and technical thing...
It's really similar to using a web based banking system, where you have user ID, password, and nowdays 2FA too
Do they care about them, to store them securely?
Not really, they key in their login credentials at the first phising mail, on a totally unsecure webpage (which looks exactly like their bank's page)...
I know that this is a bit different because in a bank you can go into the first branch and can ask for a new password or new login ID or whatever (after you have identified yourself of course), and this is not possible with bitcoin seeds, but somehow similar...
As long as people don't learn to care about their digital financial data, it doesn't matter if it's fiat or bitcoin, they will take huge risk...
So if they will start to care about storing their everyday login data in a safe place, they will do the same with their seed too, but until then, it will be a big headache, how to do it...
91  Local / Other languages/locations / Re: Magyar (Hungarian) on: July 26, 2019, 06:48:27 PM
92  Other / Meta / Re: the solution of getting merit for newbies on: July 18, 2019, 08:01:24 PM
Don't support account farming with ideas like this...
All the farmers should do to register 100,000 accounts and wait for 1 year to become jr. member, without any effort...
That's nonsense...
93  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Zero to Hero on: July 18, 2019, 05:32:32 AM
Congrats Smiley Next stop is the Legendary rank Cheesy
You need a decent amount of activity to become a Legendary, so keep up your good work here Smiley
The post count is not a barrier for you anymore to become a Legendary, all you can do is wait for the activity periods Smiley and for the merits too Smiley
94  Other / Meta / Re: Ban appeal for the account of our business: Bit-Exo.com on: July 18, 2019, 05:30:01 AM
Just try to get the admin's attention somehow, and bump this thread also, maybe you can get some attention on your problem.
I hope your problem will be resolved soon.
Double post usually doesn't get a permaban but if you post something without reference to the original it does.
95  Other / Meta / Re: How can i get Merit? on: July 12, 2019, 09:23:28 PM
How to get a merit easily?

Start a topic in Meta or anywhere else, asking about how to get merit and you'll surely get at least one merit but depends on your luck and other factors, even more...
So you can start to take part in bounty campaings quickly after...

Kidding of course...

EDIT:
IMHO the topic is lockable, OP has got the answer to the question (and the merit too Cheesy )
96  Other / Meta / Re: Query about the Local Boards on: July 11, 2019, 09:27:56 PM
Unfortunately there's little chance to create a 'normal' local topic from a topic which is in the other languages section...
The situation is like Catch-22:
If you don't post enough in your local topic, you won't be able to get a proper topic in the Local section, where the main languages are presented.
If you don't have a proper topic there, but just one in the Other languages, you won't get noticed easily by the people from your country, so they won't start to post there -> there won't be enough post in your topic...
That's all
I have already tried everything, to move my local into the Local section instead of the Other languages, but in vain...
There were posts, there was chat, I've opened a request in Meta, but nothing has happened...
You can check the topic:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1959404.0
There were no answer at all even from any mod/admin/etc... so after that, local people has started to abandon the topic in Other languages and started to post in English instead forumwide...
Only newbies who try to post/start a chat from time to time but in vain, the topic in the Other languages is really hidden, so there's really no hope to change this situation (Catch-22)
That's life Smiley
97  Other / Meta / Re: Requesting Mods to check post history of this guy on: July 09, 2019, 08:46:26 PM
Or it's a bot and it's under fine tuning at the moment?
I don't know how bots are doing their jobs but if someone is not experienced enough in creating a bot, he/she should start to develop and test it somewhere....

If you report a post and ask the mod to ban the user in the message section of the report, maybe the mod will take a look at other posts and would ban the user, it worths a try
98  Other / Meta / Re: I got shadowbanned! on: July 09, 2019, 08:42:29 PM
...
All of the updates are done on Google Docs, so if you want to view the updates, you must click on the links in the opening paragraph (OP).

I'm simply making it easier to view the updates by reposting the links.
It's still a fact that people don't like to follow external links (even google document links).
There's always a small chance that it contains virus/unexpected harmful content...
Why don't you just create a new post if there's an update in the docs?
That would move your thread to the top of the list and more people would read your thread... if you just update the google docs and you don't touch your thread it will be on the end of the topic list and nobody would check in to read your updated stuff...
Just my 2 sats
99  Other / Meta / Re: Hired shillers/thread bumpers? on: July 04, 2019, 08:17:32 PM
There's nothing new in connection with this.
This happened to be even worse in the past when there were no restrictions in certain boards, and the altcoins were skyrocketing (and had decreased when the bear market appeared)...
So yes, it's something we can do nothing against it but reporting...
If it seems a bit pointless for you, don't worry, if enough people report, it can change the situation in the future...
100  Other / Meta / Re: newbie topic starter on: July 03, 2019, 09:06:42 PM
You can do nothing but report the topics, moderators will delete them and you'll build up a nice reporting history if you keep reporting them...
It's possible that you'll get a reporting badge too Smiley (but only if it will be implemented in the future of course Tongue )
