441  Other / Meta / Re: I've just awarded this guy with 3 merits on: September 03, 2018, 09:35:17 PM
This is really sad - I was going to award some merits to this post -
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4996754.0

I checked the second and third paragraphs, and SER reports them as 78% plagiarised. I didn't research any further. At what level should we say "this thread is OK "?

A lot of posts in Politics & Society are taken from elsewhere. That user has probably used some text jumbling service to avoid detection, and this is becoming a huge problem because a simple google search will usually won't be fruitful. It's a sad state of affairs where users and now going to have to google a post before they merit it. something else really needs to change with the culture here because people are just going to find more and more ways of being sneaky to avoid being caught. One thing I know though is Newbies and Juniors shouldn't be able to get paid for doing this and that's why their signatures need to go because ICO campaigns will keep paying them to do this otherwise.
As soon as text spinning becomes a well-known tool for spammers, we'll lose the battle... spambots will take over and we can't report them in the Plagiarism topic to ban them, we can only report the post as low-quality (because text spinners are not perfect yet, so there will be some words and expressions that are just not right in that specific context...) and you can't ban a member because of the low-quality posts, can you?

And this is because it's still possible for low ranked members to earn here without the need for quality posts... as long as they can earn, why would they stop it? Homograph problem has been solved? No problem, they can move on... As long as it worth them to move on and to find another solution to spam... As long as they got paid for it... As long as they have the possibility to join into bounty campaigns... As long as they have signature...

We're already mentioned not to let jr.s to wear signatures... in vain... I know that this forum is a super-complicated ecosystem and every small change has a lot of effects on other things forumwide... but if you just don't play, you can't win... if we win, the forum will be a happy place again, if we lose, we will be at least wiser... and there will always be a next chance to improve the forum with something, to just eliminate this spamfest we have now...
I'm really looking forward to have a kind of solution asap...
442  Other / Meta / Re: Where can we discuss altcoin news? on: September 02, 2018, 08:01:53 PM

In any case, can the moderators of press be less strict and allow the more appropriate altcoin news?

Hell no. That board isn't being moderated as strictly as it should. Not only is it just for bitcoin news but it's meant to be from notable sources only, not any old random crypto article from a blog site. That board has served its purpose in my opinion and should just be locked/archived or at the very least a thread stickied there noting that content has to be from notable non-crypto based sources only so that doesn't include CoinTelegraph and cryptocrapnews.net. If you want to post these things then they go in the alt coin board.
Just change the Press section to a kind of thread where you just can't gain more activity if you post there.
If the posts in the Press section won't count, spammers would not bother to post there (after they realize that the posts are not counted, and it needs some time of course...)

443  Other / Meta / Re: I've just awarded this guy with 3 merits on: September 02, 2018, 07:41:15 PM
...
Theymos, so when are you going to remove signatures from Juniors and/or make them achieve some sort of merit to become one? This would have probably stopped this guy from earning anything. Newbies and Junior Members should not be able to get paid for copy and pasting.  If you can't earn some minimal amount of merit then you don't deserve be able to earn here.
Despite of I also don't have any problem with the restrictions of the newbies and juniors signature possibilities, but I'm a bit afraid that if we remove the signatures from juniors, the forum would lose a lot of traffic.
I don't know the exact figures but as long as a lot of newbies are singning up daily only for the bounties (and it generates the majority of the traffic to this site, I guess) I think less and less normal members are visiting the site... I hope I'm wrong in connection with this.
But if it's true, and we remove the signatures, we would lose a lot of traffic, and reddit and the other crypto related forums would take the lead.
Because I don't know the correct figures, this is just an imagination, but I would be really happy if someone who has the knowledge could reply and let us know about the situtation of the forum.

It's been over a month now and still there are no selection or implementation of the feature!
You should wait patiently.
If something is really important, it can be done in a few hours/days here.
This is a kind of nice to have thing, so you can't be sure where it is on the priority list now.
Sooner or later it will be done, if it's really important for the forum
445  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator please stop this spammer ( Added new ) on: September 02, 2018, 08:31:24 AM
Simply reporting the spammers we can not do anything else, it seems like a losing battle since they can create an unlimited number of accounts via bots.
We need a restriction on registration or the ability to send messages for new accounts, clearly the 6-minute delay for newbie is not enough.
There's no need to set more than 6 minute delay for newbies...
If someone wants to post more frequent, he/she will register a new account.
If he/she has 2 accounts, it's 3 minutes...
If he/she has 3 accounts, it's 2 minutes...
If he/she has 6 accounts, it's 1 minute to wait if he/she wants to post with both accounts continously...
If he/she has more than 6 accounts, it's physically not possible to post that much, unless he/she has a bot to post....
446  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator please stop this spammer on: August 31, 2018, 07:27:33 PM
...
I already reported two of his posts before even you made this post.
...

This is why someone somewhere suggested to mark those posts that has already been reported by someone, in order to make less work to mods. If only one member can report a post, mods will have less load (and if the reported posts will be marked with eg. a color or something, the whole forum will look like a christmas tree, or at least the Bitcoin Discussion thread Smiley )
447  Other / Meta / Re: My thread got trashed without a notification and without a reason. on: August 31, 2018, 07:15:05 PM
If I remember well I've read it somewhere in Meta that moderation in the Mining section is the strictest in the forum...
Let's see what will be the answer from the mod
448  Other / Meta / Re: Show new replies to your posts on: August 29, 2018, 07:22:30 PM
Search for the watchlist and learn to use it properly.
If you use it in the proper way, you won't miss any new post in the topics you have visited before, with a click of a button, so you won't miss any possible replies, quotes, etc...
449  Other / Meta / Re: Is anyone having error 504? on: August 29, 2018, 07:00:41 PM

First of all, I can enable the "checking your browser" thing, and that stops almost all attacker traffic. But that also breaks noscript browsers and bots, so I don't like to do it too much. Skilled attackers can also sometimes get through that, though I think that it does require a proof-of-work.
...

Checking your browser is still on, but it's not a problem for me.
The interesting part in your answer is the following:
...
But that also breaks noscript browsers and bots

So theoretically it can stop bots, who spam nonsense posts forumwide? Does this work in practice as well?
Or those bots are not that kind of bots?

If noscript browser means e.g. tor browser, than I can understand that you don't like to use this checking your browser a lot, just when it's absolutely necessary.

450  Other / Meta / Re: Hompgraphs are back. Someone up to make a list of homographic characters? on: August 28, 2018, 10:02:40 PM
Some of these are "legit" symbols in various languages, correct? For example Russian and I believe Hebrew use different symbols than English does.
Correct. That's why theymos wants to auto-replace them only on the English boards.
I'm not sure if that's going to help though, plagiarism by homograph attacks is much easier to detect than plagiarism through text spinners.
Is it also possible to auto-replace some other kind of strings like 'good project' etc.. to something like this: 'please ban me I'm a bounty hunter' ? Cheesy
Also, you have to wait, report badges were here first to implement Smiley

To be more serious:
These spammers who use these special characters don't think that mods will easily find those posts and will delete them? Their activity will decrease and they won't get paid... It's a kind of thing that can be spotted easily so it doesn't worth the effort, but this is just my opinion.... Do you think they don't read the Meta section at all?

451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Things you DONT like the bounty and signature campaigns on: August 28, 2018, 09:46:49 PM
Bounty spam is a forum issue, or, to stress it a bit more: bounty spam is the forum's issue these days...
I'm not so optimistic about the solution, because there are so much ideas to improve the forum and to stop spam, but those are still only ideas...
I am not ignoring the fact that it's not forum issue however my emphasis was on specific board for a topic. When we are talking about a feature of the forum then it's meta, suggestion to improve forum experience is meta, security issue is meta etc... I hope it make sense now.  Smiley
...
Fine fine it makes sense, I understand it Smiley

The only thing I just can't imagine that how it can happen that everyone can lead a bounty campaign (can become a bounty manager) and can almost kill the normal activity of the forum, encouraging other spammers to spam.
We have ton of rules and regulations but we just cannot stop them...
452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Things you DONT like the bounty and signature campaigns on: August 27, 2018, 10:18:14 PM
Before I make a comment on the post, I wounder if this is a meta board issue? I am trying to figure out the relevancy of the topic with forum issues and stuffs. Can anyone help me with the missing parts here for me?

Thanks in advance.

453  Other / Meta / Re: [RUPL] Ranking-Up Pipe Line of Forum Members on: August 25, 2018, 09:20:07 PM
Still not possible to decide if a hero is waiting only for the merits to come, when his/her activity is somewhere in the middle between the min/max range of the required to become a Legendary?
I know it doesn't make any difference if that hero is waiting for the merits or the activity, but anyway Smiley
454  Other / Meta / Re: Flooding on this forum, users not caring about other people's replies, please... on: August 25, 2018, 09:07:00 PM
The ICO managers must prohibit each participant's posting in Altcoin/Bitcoin discussions (by not paying its). Even though this doesn't solve the problem because they can do it in other sections at least, those sections are somewhat clean of garbage. Can ICO manager hear our scream? I hope they hear it before @hilariousetc advice is applied (no/not yet) by theymos
Bounty managers are just don't care. They do their work, they manage people bots spamming the ADs of their customer on the whole forum.
Customers are fine, they have a huge visibility. Because they are fine, they pay the bounty manager.
Bounty manager is fine, because he/she has been paid.
End of the story here for now.
luna latrantes canes non curat
Means something similar in English like this:
The moon does not heed the barking of dogs/wolves....
455  Other / Meta / Re: Bash script to filter new topics created by high rank members only on: August 25, 2018, 08:43:07 PM
The effort you made is appreciated but the purpose of this script is totally wrong and the cons of using this script are outweighing the benefits of using it.
...

It's always up to the member to decide if he/she wants to use the script or not.
Maybe it's possible to create a daily routine like this:
1)Run the script and check the new topics of the high ranked users
and
2)after if the member still has some time, it's still possible to check the forum without the script to check for newbies looking for help or to check the other topics started by lower ranked members
This script is not a kind of ignore list, and only a few members using the ignore list function (with too much users on ignore)
People usually ignore some members, but if the ignore lists will be made available for the public, it could change.

456  Other / Meta / Re: Seeking reporter badge images on: August 25, 2018, 08:24:52 PM
I don't think any member was awarded with this great new badges because I am eligible for the 1000+ reports badge and didn't receive any as you see.
...
This topic is about to gather as much idea for the badge as possible, so you won't find any badge for reporting yet...
As soon as the badge itself will be choosen and developed, we will have a new topic in Meta about it, I'm sure.
Until then, we can only continue to think about the possible icons for it
457  Other / Meta / Re: Please help me on the issue of posting posts on: August 21, 2018, 09:33:30 PM

I often think about creating one megathread in the off topic section for those who only want to gain activity, e.g.: post here to increase you post count and not to bother the other users on the main boards...

In that case they would have a topic where they can spam and the forum would be free (or nearly free) of spam...

Just image that this thread gets deleted.. hundredths of accounts will be back to newbie for just a second. It's a good strategy to discourage the shitposters after mounts of posting and waiting the activity to increase. In the high-tech era we are lining now everything is robotized so are the account farmers, so to troll them it's not easy as the bots don't really care if they gonna be busted, they just start all over again with a new strategy.
Well, that was the hidden dirty trick in my idea Smiley
Every spammer would just had their spam posts deleted after a while, but no other members would suffer for deleting that one big spam megathread...

I know that nowdays everything is robotized, and bots don't really care about the whole thing...

But to be more serious:
What if we restrict the posting to 1 post per day until the newbies get 1 merit at least?
That won't restrict them too much, they can ask for help, they can open a topic if they need, but we will have less spam (they can't join to a sig.campaign where there's a 20 post minimum per week)
The same would apply for jr.members too...
I know that account farmers would just start to create more accounts, but it would be more easy to spot them too...
458  Other / Off-topic / Re: WHERE CAN I GET THE MERIT? on: August 21, 2018, 09:05:52 PM
You get merit from number 2. I thought everyone knew that?
Nope, maybe other members knew it but I really don't have any idea what it means. What does it means anyway? I'm really curious to find it out before I go to sleep pretty late in the evening (actually it's morning 1:55 am).

Well as you probably know there is 'one' and 'two'. One is mostly nothing but two can get you merit but only if you do 'one' twice which is two, but you need to do it fast like 11 (not eleven) with one second in between. That can get you one merit (but not always). It's pretty straight forward to be honest and I'm surprised a Senior Member doesn't know this by now, but nothing surprises me here any more.
OMG.... Smiley
I think it's hard time to lock this topic, before every dirty trick of getting merit is told to everyone...
Or, as it has already been told, the topic should have been deleted, to keep these things dark...
I just can't imagine how a "Lamborghini Member Global Moderator Legendary" can be so careless to let everyone know these kind of top secret things...
Cheesy
459  Other / Meta / Re: Please help me on the issue of posting posts on: August 21, 2018, 08:48:59 PM
so i can report my programs. I am afraid that if posted too many times can not report

so you are only here for bounty money! awesome...
Just as like most of the bounty hunters, who only care about their post quantity...
I don't know why they try to post in spam megathreads, those are periodically get deleted...
If they would just post in off topic, they won't lose a post...

460  Other / Meta / Re: 2 MILLION users and their STATS on: August 20, 2018, 08:01:15 PM
I would be interested in the following breakdown:
1.) Active users who posted only in Altcoin discussion
2.) rest of the active users

And sorted by rank, from newbie to legendary...
Do you think I would be surprised by the result?
