521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto currency in a card? on: July 11, 2018, 09:46:36 PM
....
I can't agree with such attitude. Cryptocurrency cards are very convenient and make use of Bitcoin and other supported cryptocurrencies easier and more popular. And this has nothing to do with banks and there ia no reason to have doubts.
I think crypto debit cards are the future for world wide use of cryptocurrencies. This area will only grow and develope further and I expect for card providers to get even more involved in crypto.
Everybody is hyping cards... Regular fiat debit and credit cards will be replaced by mobile phones, it's possible for most of the cards of VISA and MasterCard to digitalize the card itself into a banking app and you can use it to pay at a contactless POS terminal in every shop, by using the phone's NFC connection (like you can use a PayPass card at a contactless terminal).
Even Apple has the ApplePay, which is the same, you can use the iPhone's NFC connection to pay at a contactless terminal around the globe...
So if it's possible to use NFC to make a payment with a mobile phone, why don't bitcoin wallets utilize this? You won't need to use QR codes, etc., just to start the wallet and use the NFC to pay... this should be the way forward, in my opinion. Also, you can use the NFC between two mobile phones, if you want to make a transaction peer to peer...
522  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: South Africa Bitcoin Vending machine on: July 11, 2018, 09:30:18 PM
i live in the country who still don't know what is cryptocurrencies and how it's work and indeed there was several bitcoin ATM available in my country but this is already lack of interest because some people does not care about bitcoin even if there are bitcoin users available but they were more likely convert their bitcoin through an local  exchange and avoid bitcoin ATM
Bitcoin ATMs usually charge high fees compared to exchanges and other possible exchange methods, but they are comfortable to use and more or less quick.
I don't know much about the vending machine, but I just cannot imagine that you want to buy something from the machine and you have to wait for the 3 or 6 confirmation to let the machine release your item you are waiting for...
523  Other / Meta / Re: Can a merit be taken back after given out? on: July 11, 2018, 08:02:26 PM
I want to know if a merit given to a post can be reverse or revoke. May be if somebody give me a merit can the person take the merit back if he thinks the post don't deserve it.
OP, please lock the topic.
You have the answer, and it's better to lock the topic, before spammers come here and make it a spam megathread. Every newbie will be happy to post you a one liner just to increase their activity count...
524  Other / Meta / Re: Can we stop polls being made in certain parts of the forum? on: July 11, 2018, 07:57:46 PM
...
I get putting poles in the market place or in some of the bitcoin discussion boards as they're good for research, I just don't see a point of it in the techincal support board.
If you fell that it's only for spamming a new topic (to get some merit in the end, I don't know why, but some newbies thinks that if they open a topic (or poll) quite frequently they will get merit sooner or later...)
So if you think that those users are only opening these kind of topics (polls) in order to gain activity, you can report it with "low quality", or "meaningless post" and mods will delete it. I know it's not the same to cure the problem instead of the prevention, but that's all you can do now.
525  Other / Meta / Re: Disable signatures/bounties til a user reaches full member status. on: July 10, 2018, 08:40:10 PM
Let's implement an ignore system (which is not mandatory to use) with different levels, like this:
- No ignore (freedom)
- Small ignore (ignoring only blatant spammers, scammers, etc...)
- Medium ignore (ignoring more spammers, scammers)
- Strong ignore (ignoring nearly every spammer, scammer)
- Reversed ignore (whitelist, everyone else is ignored automatically).

If it's not mandatory to use the ignore list, people fighting for freedom can't have any argument, because people will be free to choose if they want to ignore spammers or not...

This needs some (or a lot of) users to maintain the ignore lists.

But on the long run (when the merit system will be fine tuned) we can set up the ignore system like this:
- No ignore (can see everyone)
- Small ignore (ignoring users with default merit, who haven't gathered additional merits)
- Medium ignore (ignoring those who gathered less than 10% additional merits for their rank)
- Strong ignore (ignoring those who gathered less than 30% additional merits for their rank)

In this case, ignore lists are not needed, it can be automated (and still not mandatory to use, to let people choose if they really want to read shitposts...)
This needs the merit system to work as expected, so it needs time, but it can be a kind of automated solution.

EDIT:
I've changed my mind.
Why not to implement the second solution immediately, to test it? If it's not mandatory, people can not complain about it.
For newbies, who had no chance to gain merits, there will be the merit sources (with no ignore list activated of course) so they will have the chance to gather some merits to escape the ignore lists.
526  Other / Meta / Re: New spam bot? [how do they do it?] on: July 09, 2018, 10:26:52 PM
...
Report all of them

As long as they use bots (programmed computers) to spam continously, reporting is like fighting a forest fire with a child's water gun...

I'm wondering if it's possible to check automatically if a post was posted already? In this case spammers couldn't post the same post in every topic, at least they would need to modify it a bit... so it's still not the perfect solution...
527  Other / Meta / Re: Disable signatures/bounties til a user reaches full member status. on: July 09, 2018, 09:25:31 PM
...
This is still a much better suggestion compared to removing signatures for all of the users. There are some quality signature campaigns and hard working campaign managers still on site, so it's better to regulate it instead of banning it...
I usually don't belive that those jr. members and newbies posting in the alt section are not bots, simply, they post rubbish, I just can't belive they are humans and do this manually day by day...
So if they are bots (or people who don't speak English) and they leave, the forum won't lose anything but only traffic (which is still important, if we want to be the first and most active bitcoin related forum, prior to reddit, etc...)
I just feel sorry for the very few newbies, who come here to learn about bitcoin (really) because they will suffer because of the shitposter army... if we implement some strict regulation for the newbies, jr. members, etc...
If anyone had found a simple solution for this problem, it would have been implemented already, so there's no simple solution at all. If there will be a solution, that will hurt, the question is whom and how much...
You just can't report all of the spammers and get them banned, because if you get one banned, two or three new shitposter will register immediately... (unfortunately, even if you won't get one banned, the new shitposters would still register...)
528  Other / Meta / Re: I've just invented dMerits. on: July 08, 2018, 08:39:59 PM
You seem to have suggested an interesting variation on the theme. The merit system has two levels - Source1 and Source2. Source1 members obtain refreshable merits under the current system. Source2 members don't get any automatic distribution, but obtain their sMerits from Source1 members. This could be a useful improvement, as it keeps control of primary merit distribution within the current administration.
In this case, why not to implement a next level (Source 3) for local boards?
These Source 3 members would obtain sMerits from Source 2 members, but only smaller amount, e.g. 20-30 sMerits per month (that could vary based on the post count of the local board, etc...)
If you want to control it, let's make Source 2 members check what happened with the sMerits given in the previous round, and if everything is fine, they can give sMerits again.
In this case, a fraudulent Source 3 member only can give away only 20-30 sMerits, and after there will be no more merits from the Source 2 member.
They can be called local sources or something similar...
I can imageine that if someone wants to give merits in specific boards only (e.g. Technical discussion or other special threads), they can also become Source 3 members, so I wouldn't limit it to local boards only...
529  Other / Meta / Re: Special Hero question on: July 04, 2018, 06:59:51 PM
I wonder if it is random, or under admin control.

It is random. It is calculated from a hash of the user id, so without knowing the salt used, you'll not be able to work out when it will happen to any account. I think that sort of answers bitart's question in the OP as well. No, it isn't possible to tell if they would have ranked up if they had the merit.

Yeah, thanks, I've done some research (out of curiosity) about the activity count required.

...
Nah, that'd significantly complicate things. Currently this randomness is done with a single SQL query, which is very convenient.

Code:
up_date smf_members set ID_POST_GROUP=21 wh_ere ID_POST_GROUP=8 and
activity>=775 and activity>=775+con_v(sub_str(sha_1(con_cat(ID_MEMBER,
secretSeed)), 1, 2), 16, 10)

The required activity level per user is suitably random for betting, but anyone who can read my code (there are a few such people) will be able to exactly predict when someone will become Legendary, so I don't really recommend it.
So this is the basic code that calculates the activity required for each member.

I've found somewhere that Theymos mentioned that the seed is the same for every user and SHA1 ensures that it can't be calculated backwards.

I've created a little database from the 'Legendary one day' thread where people were posting their activity when they became legendaries.

I've also created a little excel sheet that made the coding (the same in the SQL code above, it was not easy to get excel to do that for me, as excel don't know the SHA1, you need a visual basic extention for that).

Theymos was right, that's not possible to calculate it even if you have a decent database with user IDs and the matching activity count...

So to cut the long story short, I know that I need 430 merits still to become a legendary but I was just curious if somehow possible to 'predict' the necessary activity limit for the hero members, to check if it has already been reached.

Thanks to all Smiley

EDIT:
Sorry for altering the original SQL code (with several _ inserted into SQL commands), but cloudfare is blocking me if I quote the original SQL code from theymos's original post...
530  Other / Meta / Special Hero question on: July 03, 2018, 09:51:35 PM
I'm just curious...
Is it possible to know that:
If I had already earned the necessary 1000 merits (haven't, but theoretically) I would have become a Legendary or not, based on the current activity count?
Because I have already 910 activities, that means a possible legendary rank if we don't mind the merits.
I know that I'm really far away from the Legendary rank, but I'm still curious to know if it's possible to check if it's only the merits that are missing, or I still haven't reached my necessary activity count too.
I know that getting the answer won't change the whole situation at all, but curiosity is a hard thing to deal with Smiley
531  Other / Meta / Re: Should ANN and services threads be excluded from the merit system ? on: July 03, 2018, 09:24:35 PM
I was thinking about this the other day. Users are just wasting their merit on them to be honest, and they're just needlessly giving them away as a "like" or "thanks" instead of to posts that are actually of substance. Wouldn't surprise me if some of the bounties are requesting that users merit their ANN bounty threads as well in exchange for higher bounties. I wouldn't be against removing the merit button from certain sections and the first post in Ann threads would be a good candidate.
If you remove the merit button from e.g. the ANN threads, they will open a similar topic in the Offtopic section and they will use that to distribute the merits, if they really care and want...
And in the offtopic, they just can't be blamed, if it's not too obvious that they buy/sell merits there...

I, personally, waste a lot of time to read useless posts, I read more shitposts than useful ones. Even AI bot could make more quality posts than them
Do bots really post here on the forum? I just can't belive that people can post so useless things in any topic...
What if we implement a recaptcha for e.g. a week, for every post? If it's only a week, I won't care much... This way we could analyze if it has any effect on the post count, so we could hopefully get the answer for the bot question...
If that happens, give me a heads up about a week before so I don't have to keep fiddling with the stupid recaptcha (I mean it's honestly not worth me being here if that gets implemented, otherwise there'll be a 12 hour delay on posts).
I know that the recaptcha can be a real pain for those who e.g. comes thru the tor network, so it was just an idea. I'm really curious about this bot vs. human thing...
I also know that before the recaptcha, it was possible to pay for captcha solvers to "skip" the captchas, but this has been ended with the recaptcha, I think, so bots won't be able to post if I'm right.
533  Other / Meta / Re: Signature Campaign which pays for merits? on: July 03, 2018, 08:51:42 PM
Why is all this necessary ?
How about the BMs just do their jobs, check the posts like they're supposed to and ban the spammers from their campaign ? They're pretty easy to spot.
I don't know how much they're paid but I'm sure it's enough for them to do that simple effort.
You see a guy posting useless stuff in megathreads, you remove him, you see someone saying "great project" or anything similar, you remove him etc...
Why create a rule that will lead to more cheating obviously ?

The bounty managers are paid anyway. Their payment doesn't depend on the quality of the posts of the participants.
If they are lazy enough, they won't care about the post quality...
If those who advertise with the signature campaign would differentiate the payment of the manager based on the post quality, that would be a motivation for the bounty manager to care about quality too.
But, unfortunately those who advertise with the bounty managers, also don't care about quality, just quantity....

Yes.

Step 3 – Make a wonderful comment on our BitcoinTalk ANN Page and get 300 AGRO more.
From their bounty website: https://agroneum.com/airdrop/

Mods: I guess it's time to banhammer the author and the users joining the bounty.
I'm just wondering...
Topics in ANN thread usually looks like this:
1st post: Some marketing bullshit about the actual scamcoin
From 2nd post to the last post:
'Good project', 'To the moon', etc..
So my understanding is:
Only the first post is "valuable" in a topic in the ANN thread.
We could modify the ANN thread to contain topics with only 1 post, the OP, and that would contain all the necessary information about the scamcoin, and we can prevent the thread from the BS posts.
If something is important, technical thing, question from the users, they should open a kind of Technical support topic in another board, so they can discuss the real questions in it.
The ANN thread should remain for marketing purposes, but everyone would have equal chances to catch the attention of the users. If there will be no bump posts in the ANN threads, there will be much less shitposts, bump service will just stop, etc...
I don't know if it makes sense, just an idea...
538  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: June 30, 2018, 09:06:40 PM
...
Hopefully, we can come up with a final product that theymos may be able to sticky the thread, add to the report page as a drop down menu or add to the help page.
The reporting page is only a few lines long.
If you can summarize the essence of this guide into a few paragraphs, it can fit to the end of the reporting page too (and that's the perfect place for a good summary, because if someone is too lazy to search for reporting guidelines, he still can find it when opening the report page).
Or, first there could be a link to this guide topic (like: check the reporting guide here, and link it to this topic).
After the link, there could be the summary of this topic, if needed. Maybe the link would be enough, and in that case there will be no need to update the reporting page, the link always points to the updated guide.
539  Other / Meta / Re: A volunteer available. on: June 29, 2018, 09:46:18 PM
Does the forum need any volunteer to do any mundane tasks? I can commit at least 2 hrs a day even everyday. One reason is I would like to get some experience on running a big forum like this one.
+1 on this, i think i can volunteer too.

As much as i want to report all those spammers, it would also be a good opportunity to experience being an assosciate. Not only i would learn more about crypto, but also how a forum works (probably codes and such).
It's like starting your career in McDonalds or any similar place:
First, you sweep the floor, clean the tables, after you can wash the vegetables, later on fry potatoes...
Noone will start in the top position without experience...
So you first should start reporting (sweeping, cleaning).
Meanwhile, you can learn about bitcoin and the forum, so you'll be ready to do something more complex for the forum sooner or later. Noone will become an admin in a few weeks/months time, I guess...
540  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Mentions: @ or # on: June 29, 2018, 09:36:28 PM

wow... No hassle at all. While that works so well, I was more particular about responding to a mention. For example, you made a post and someone after several pages of the thread wants to call an attention to something you said, quoting the text only limits it to those who get to see the post. But you who made the post may not be aware of that.
You can try the watchlist. First, it's a bit strange, but after it's handy.
When you post in a topic, it's automatically (can be changed) added to your watchlist.
I usually use it this way:
First time I had just wiped the watchlist (tabula rasa).
After when I post in a topic, and someone post after, the topic will appear in the watchlist, it shows that there were some kind of activity in the topic.
After, when a topic becomes a spam megathread (in a few days, usually, in Bitcoin Discussion) I just unwatch the topic, and it won't appear again in the watchlist.
Once in a month, I'll go thru on the topics (I click on Edit watchlist) and I delete the topics I don't want to follow anymore.
If you search for it, you can find much better guides for the watchlist, if you are interested.
