841  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How much does performance drop by when using more than 1 graphics card? on: July 25, 2012, 02:49:58 PM
I recall having 8xGPU boxes and each of them were performing at 100% capacity. Though in practice sometimes it makes sense to overclock GPU's a lil bit less when there are many of them for a given power and cooling scheme.

Storing passwords for all system components behind one password/access point is a most obvious and deliberate insecurity.
No. The easiest way to understand why that is so is to explore the alternatives. It's a lot easier to keep one password (which might include two factor auth) provably secure than several. I don't have to plan for my LastPass password getting broken since it's heat-death-of-the-universe-unfeasable for someone to break it. Thus the risk management is at an optimum.

You don't gain security if you split it up - only obscurity. Increasing the number of different passwords someone needs to remember also increases the risk for people to invent "password schemes", which all lessen security due to lowering entropy.

Bitcoinica using LastPass wasn't a problem. Using a known string as master password was.

I understand what you are getting at and in the technical sense only I agree. But having access to each system component distributed between different username and password combinations, even if they tend to follow a scheme or formula, still requires more effort to break into each one than to compromise one account that gives access (information) for all of the components. An attack on that one account may for now be technically unfeasible, but combined with a leak and/or stupidity as in this case, the results were far more catastrophic than they might have been had passwords not been centrally stored.
...

I think that lastpass is a very excellent system and it is capable of greatly improving information security of a typical company that is using it instead of almost any one other typical method in common use for such purposes. However, last pass must be used correctly.

This means:
1. Using second factor auth for lastpass (except maybe when the team using it is very small and has no really valuable assets at risk, or during transitional period)
2. Not using lastpass for the most valuable passwords such as those which give assess to bank accounts, money, bitcoin wallets, and most of all "other people money".

For 2. probably using keepass with second factor key is a good idea.

I even hear "German Engineering" as a desirable characteristic from people who can barely open the hood of their car.

LOL. That's me. I literally never ever opened bonnet of my merc since I bought it a few years back. I am totally sold on idea of "German Engineering", whatever it is.

I predict that the price will either go up or down or stay the same.  Smiley

Look like this gentleman masters neither English nor basic sense of right and wrong.

And it seems that given the confession a scammer tag could be a well deserved here.

Bitcoin is special but not THAT special.  Mageant, you are not convincing anyone here but yourself.

850  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica MtGox account compromised on: July 24, 2012, 09:20:16 AM
It's actually more complicated than that. It appears that a significant proportion of Bitcoinica's deposits are on Mt. Gox, and Mt. Gox froze the account (and are unlikely to unfreeze it until there is significant development).

I bet desire to pay depositors some money would be exactly the development mtgox considers as significant.

And that's what we're trying to do in the Bitcoinica Fund Recovery Initiative, unfortunately as you know it's not easy. I'm not a legal specialist, I just try to get as many of the big creditors on board as possible.

"Big creditors", contact lonelyminer.
851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica MtGox account compromised on: July 24, 2012, 08:12:07 AM
To the best of my understanding the position of "Intersango trio" now is:

"FUCK YOU ALL! WE WILL KEEP THE MONEY! SUE US! (but our other businesses such as intersango and bitcoin conference in London are safe and you should use/attend it)"

And I would think the victims here are all the depositors, Tihan/Wendon and Zhou. I think that we all need to get together and bring legal action against Bitcoinica GP, and the "Intersango trio" with intent to breach the veil of limited liability based on their alleged gross negligence.

852  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica MtGox account compromised on: July 24, 2012, 05:31:26 AM
yep, the mindset of a good attacker often starts with "let's imagine that the target is stupid beyond reason and does all kinds of idiotic things that no sane person would ever do".

Clarke's Three Laws are three "laws" of prediction formulated by the British writer and scientist Arthur C. Clarke. They are:
1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I'd say that Clarke's 3rd law applies here. Not sure if this would make sense as PR strategy, however. You can, perhaps, just say that it is "pure money". (only one component of "pure money" we are lacking: universal adoption).

854  Economy / Lending / Re: Bryan Micon's List of BTC Scams and Ponzi Schemes on: July 24, 2012, 05:22:02 AM
We have no conclusive proof of it being a ponzi just yet. It well could be, for example, some guy in possession of some alien tech who feels strangely charitable towards "naive and greedy" part of this forums population.

Also since I am a real person and not some cooked up anonymous identity, I have to be careful and not set myself up for a libel lawsuit.

Whether you like it or not, wipe all and reinstall is what you need to do.

We are all going to be rich! Stop trying to stop us! How dare you! Do you really expect us to stop deluding ourselves and start doing something productive?  Smiley

BTW you can add all the so called pirate pass through bonds to your list. The are just his co-conspirators who would be equally liable for fraud IMO once/if "savings and trust", lol, is revealed as a ponzi (so would be every singe ponzi promoter on this forum).

857  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Killer App: High Yield Investments on: July 23, 2012, 11:15:35 PM
Your argument would be stronger if you repeat FIAT not 5 times, but 10 times or so and word BITCOINS not 2 times but say 20. Also use not just all caps but all caps and bold and larger red blinking font. There, it seems, not much else that can be done to make your point any less invalid.
858  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Killer App: High Yield Investments on: July 23, 2012, 11:01:06 PM
Interesting theory, somehow BITCOIN as opposed to FIAT increases typical sustainable ROI by thousands percent. This is a  miracle! Why 1 BTC does not worth 1000$ yet if that is true.

Dream on.
859  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Mining Newbie Questions! on: July 23, 2012, 05:13:48 PM
Aha, we are making some progress here. From Bitcoin mining using 3 generations old hardware, to daytrading and HYIP/ponzis.

How about taking it one step further and moving on to actually producing some new and unique and cool product or service?

Good advice that I expect will be widely ignored: only invest in what you know.
