8743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ways for governments to ruin Bitcoin on: April 22, 2011, 08:19:53 AM
they can strongly push with ISPs to block the bitCoin traffic, if one can be "patterned-out" out of your traffic. But rest assured -- bitCoin ARE serious competitor to Federal Reserve, and those guys not only make up rules, they can break them as well.

Please read:
Quote
I’ve been playing online poker for a living for the last five years. The government might think they can shut down the industry, but they can’t. As John Gilmore famously said, “The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.” Poker Stars was taken down for US Players on April 15th. It’s taken me less than a week to set up a virtual private network (vpn) that makes it look like I’m playing from another country, acquire a foreign PO Box, obtain a Skype virtual foreign phone number, and deposit money onto a foreign site that doesn’t accept US players. Now I’m back in business!

As the US and other governments attempt to further restrict the online activities of their subjects (I refuse to call us citizens), I expect to see increasing use of vpns, encryption, untraceable virtual currency, anonymous remailers, etc. It’s an arms race between the factions of freedom and tyranny, but unlike most conventional arms races, this seems like one that the good guys are the favorite to win.

8745  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [POLL 1/3] Bitcoin: URI refactor? Low-level vs high-level on: April 22, 2011, 12:49:59 AM
Wouldn't a decent way to handle this be to add an optional units parameter?

Especially if the need for mBTC could be not too far off?

e.g., instead of
  bitcoin:address?amount=0.010

a
  bitcoin:address?amount=10&units=mbtc

If units= is not specified, then the default of units=btc would be assumed.

That's a crowded space with Fiverr and a host of others:
  http://makemoneyonlineng.com/top-12-alternatives-fiverr-money/

though none yet accept bitcoins as payment nor provide Bitcoin compensation.

Workable's is kind of similar.  The #1 request on their user forum: Ability to be paid using bitcoins.

8747  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Seeking bitcoin options on: April 21, 2011, 09:00:52 PM
I'm interested in buying similar length options, strike price up to $1.50. American style not required.

I wanted to make sure I truly understood what "American-style" options were, so I checked Wikipedia:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Option_style#American_and_European_options

American-style option: may be exercised at any time between the purchase date and the expiration date

European-style option: can only be exercised on the date of expiration

The #bitcoin-otc exchange provides a suggestion on how ClearCoin escrow can be used to help ensure that the call writer actually holds the bitcoins and how to lessen the chances that the BTC holding has been levered:
  http://wiki.bitcoin-otc.com/wiki/Option_orders

Incidentally, I too wish to buy a call option:

8750  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BitcoinExchange Services - Cashout and exchange service-PayPal, MoneyPak, & more on: April 21, 2011, 06:14:57 PM
[Update: To Anyone Considering This Service, Please Read The Pages Towards Then End Before Sending Any Funds ]

------------

I also sell Bitcoin, and accept payment with any of the above methods. [PayPal, GreenDot MoneyPak, Western Union, MoneyGram, Alert Pay, Liberty Reserve, WMZ, ACH, Wire Transfer]

You are saying that you will accept PayPal as payment for the purchase of Bitcoins?

Awesome!

[Update: see updates to OP.]

The exchange rate fluctuates, but could you provide a number reflecting your fee?   e.g.,  fee from n% to n% over market rate, depending on order size?

Also, it appears that you are new here.  Would you be willing to use CoinCard escrow for the Bitcoins that I might purchase?  I'm rated on the Bitcoin OTC WoT (web of trust): http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewratingdetail.php?nick=sgornick

8752  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Transaction Volume on: April 21, 2011, 08:51:00 AM
I believe that the bitcoindays measure is a good indicator of market health and participation.

Of course this activity will not reflect activity that occurs within eWallet services such as MyBitcoin and Mt. Gox.  Those transactions made between accounts within the service are never seen by the Bitcoin network.
8753  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should an EWallet be called something else? If so, what? on: April 21, 2011, 07:40:50 AM
For the money in my bank, I don't refer to it as a wallet -- my money is in my account with my bank.

Similarly, my bitcoins at Mt. Gox are not stored in an ewallet.  Mt. Gox's web site shows the number of bitcoins in my account with them.

So these are simply "online accounts"?

8755  Economy / Marketplace / Re: New Bitcoin Trading Exchange available on the i2p Network on: April 21, 2011, 01:29:26 AM
Another, that I'm not real keen on, would be where a trader could transfer funds to another trader's account. My response would be, why not just use the bitcoin network for this?

Because the BTC/USD exchange rate fluctuations are so signficant.  Assuming the exchange rates on this exchange don't deviate too far from those on Mt. Gox, for instance, then the USD funds held in the exchange can be transferred out (as BTC) at a future date without causing concern that losses could occur should the exchange rate drop in the meantime.

There are those who desire a method to electronically transfer funds (in USD) anonymously with their trading partners.  I was thinking that theres no reason this exchange cannot serve that function as well.

8759  Economy / Marketplace / Re: New Bitcoin Trading Exchange available on the i2p Network on: April 19, 2011, 11:30:43 AM
This was a one time event, and the amount of USDs in the Bitcoin Exchange will never change it is a constant force that enables the ability to trade.

I'm missing something basic then.

So though your service might not be able to be shut down by technical means, wouldn't the same end result be possible by simply selling bitcoins until all USD in the exchange become owned by the opposing force?
8760  Other / Off-topic / The Sharing Economy - Fast Company article on: April 19, 2011, 07:02:49 AM
Here's a pretty decent article from Fast Company titled "The Sharing Economy":

From the article:
"Amazon came first, then eBay, and peer-to-peer is next. It's almost as far as you can get on the spectrum of goods exchanged,"

That evolution (from a centralized model to a centralized+P2P hybrid model to finally a pure P2P model) is also described here in a post by Tim Hyer of RentCycle:
  http://blog.rentcycle.com/building-the-bridge-to-p2p

Specifically Tim describes that until eBay really took off, we as a society were too fearful of doing business P2P-style with strangers.  Once that fear eased, Craigslist was able to dominate its market.

"It’s all about baby steps and doing what’s right at the appropriate time."
