923  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: To all the Litecoin haters, trolls and twats on: July 12, 2012, 07:53:47 PM
I am not a Litecoin hater. I just think it is irrelevant.

What exactly is irrelevant?

And who said there had to be any relevance to bitcoin?

Not relevance to Bitcoin, but relevance to any chances of litecoin's long term success.

You guys will not like what I say. Indeed, there likely will be a "silver" to Bitcoin's "gold" but it is not litecoin.

Of course, hashing  algo like scrypt(bcrypt(sha512(whirlpool(GOST(whatever(data+nonce...)+nonce)+nonce)+nonce)+nonce) would be a great thing to have. But this and some other minor tweaks are simply not enough to breach the network effect of Bitcoin.

The "silver" crypto currency  must be much more fundamentally different from Bitcoin and complimentary to Bitcoin at the same time to have any decent chances of success. Litecoin simply ain't it.

We need a bot that can run on a large number of GPU's concurrently. Then we will play if prizes are large enough.

Awesome! please email .psd to info@bitcoinmagazine.co.uk together with whatever licensing terms you have for this. Thank you.

926  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: To all the Litecoin haters, trolls and twats on: July 12, 2012, 07:17:40 PM
The problem isn't with litecoin, it's the fact that no cryptocurrency will replace Bitcoin. It will take a monumental leap in usefulness to oust Bitcoin. Even if a billionaire were to build custom designed chips for litecoin and get every bank in America to become miners for litecoin, Bitcoin would grow faster in popularity because it is the original. It is the Levis Jeans, the Coca-cola, the Ford-don't-need-no-bailout, of original crypcoin. Litecoin will always be Pepsi at best.

Uh, around here, Pepsi is much more popular as opposed to Coca Cola. While I for one would choose coke any day, you can almost never get it in restaurants or vending machines around here. But you can get Pepsi. The only places that sell coke are some gas stations and grocery stores.

Just saying. Maybe that's like the hole Bitcoin =  ASIC & Litecoin = GPU/CPU argument.

As a former Coca-Cola employee (a function head level) I am in position to tell you with some authority that you shall not assume that network effects of soft drinks and "currency" and "store of value" sectors are similar. You'd be a little more accurate if you have used Ebay and say ubid.com as your examples instead of Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

927  Other / Off-topic / Re: Build a Bitcoin fortess on: July 12, 2012, 06:56:52 PM
Do you realise how big a prize a boatload  Wink of ASIC bitcoin miners is? You see there are no problems with selling it or laundering the money. Just convert some rented weed farm into a mining silo and you are golden. Pristine clean coins.

I am sure all the pirates out there will not let it stay there untouched for long.

With big ASIC farms think physical security first as it is the largest risk by far.

929  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: If bitcoin become illegal? on: July 12, 2012, 06:24:03 PM
Awesome.

Now I have another question for you.

What happens if The Congress passes a law saying that 2+2=5 ?

930  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Public Plea to Bitcoin Developers and Supporters alike on: July 12, 2012, 06:16:40 PM
And I am not just telling it to you so that I have bigger piece of mining pie. I am myself out of the mining game for good  for some time now and working with various projects such as Bitcoin Magazine, Ellet, Safebit etc... just to mention a few.
Does that mean your ASIC farm is no longer in the cards?

Our financial models told us that risk/reward is not that great, our partners were not too happy giving our investors decent terms so we pulled out of that project a few weeks before BFL announcement.

We decided to let all the competing ASIC teams to fight it out between each other without us.

Some of our time got wasted on this, but nobody on our side lost any money, except me (and it is negligible).

931  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 100% proof pirate runs a ponzi (thought experiment) on: July 12, 2012, 06:03:14 PM
"Upper Cabal", lol. I do like this. Note that we have our bases of operation in or near Seoul, London and New-York, this strongly indicates  that The Council of Venice must be involved.
 Wink

932  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 100% proof pirate runs a ponzi (thought experiment) on: July 12, 2012, 10:17:54 AM
Pirate never failed with what he promised to the ones who trust(ed) him.

This is EXACTLY how you're supposed to run a ponzi scheme. You keep your promises until the total of the actual borrowed funds ceases to grow. How can you not see this?

It might even be that when he finally defaults, he doesn't disappear but blames it on someone hacking into his system and stealing all the coins. So, the true believers will continue to believe he's legit, even if he "lost" their money.

This is indeed seems to be THE biz model for many Bitcoin businesses these days:
- Start some service that involves people sending you lots of BTC for "safekeeping" or under some other pretense;
- Be an upstanding gentleman;
- Keep all your promises;
- Have someone like Bruce Wagner promoting you;
- Once you have enough BTC in your wallet, get hacked or manufacture some other calamity;
- Optionally, pay some of it back;
- Profit.

How disgusting.

Here, I have another wild theory/speculation. Pirate40 = Bruce Wagner. LOL

933  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Public Plea to Bitcoin Developers and Supporters alike on: July 12, 2012, 07:48:36 AM
But the real money to be made isn't in future mining. It's in the services yet to be born that will compliment bitcoin.

going to have to agree with you on this one.

I've been scrutinizing potential ASIC investments (with help of financial pros) for a few month and I am going to have agree with you here. All the projections related to ASIC mining enterprises have one thing certain, that is a significant jump in network difficulty. Most of the projections assume rather significant increase in USDBTC that brings ASIC minig projects into reasonable risk adjusted return territory.

My conclusion is that it is much less risky and profitable to invest into BTC itself. Another good option for those who do not want to be passive investors is to "sell shovels to the miners" and it seems BFL is doing just fine there.  As Soggy-hamster said, if you want to become rich provide services that enhance Bitcoin network.

And I am not just telling it to you so that I have bigger piece of mining pie. I am myself out of the mining game for good  for some time now and working with various projects such as Bitcoin Magazine, Ellet, Safebit etc... just to mention a few.
934  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: How to live off of your Bitcoins? on: July 11, 2012, 06:12:11 PM
Another way is to get 50x of your annual expenses saved in bitcoin form. Then just sell 2% of al your bitcoins slowly every year.

Enjoy your life while you are at it. You mileage (50x and 2%) may vary.

from answers:

Okay - here's where "piercing the corporate veil" comes in. Sometimes, when investors are also officers who run the company, they run it really really badly. Stupidly. Irresponsibly. Maybe even illegally. When that happens, the law says that the corporate form shouldn't protect those particular investor-officers.

Let's say you and I are investors in a company, each in for 20%. But let's say that I am also the CEO, and you are just someone who owns 20% but doesn't actually run the business. You are kept apprised of what's going on periodically, but you don't make the decisions.

Now, let's say I take some of the corporation's money to Vegas and lose it, and the corp can't pay its electric bill. Now, under the general rule I discussed above, since you and I are 20% investors then we are each liable for 20% of the electric bill. But that isn't fair, is it? It isn't fair that you should be on the hook for 20% of that electric bill when the bill wasn't paid because I did something unlawful.

Since I personally did this bad thing, the law makes an exception to the general rule. It says that I personally should be liable to the electric company. It says that the electric company should be able to "lift" or "pierce the corporate veil" that would otherwise protect me as an investor, and reach out and get me, personally, to pay for the entire electric bill.

So that's what piercing the corporate veil is: it's an exception that allows for investor's to be held entirely responsible (the old-fashioned way they used to) for debts of the corporation. But it usually only applies when the investor has done something bad in running the company that he should not have done. Usually something illegal or unlawful.
936  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Paying 6.9% per week... Small accounts welcome. on: July 11, 2012, 08:14:40 AM
just preserving evidence, ignore pls for now

to open an account:

  • step 1: read the faq below
  • step 2: PM me with a withdrawal address
    (optional: if you want any automated interest payments to go to a different address to your withdrawals, also tell me your interest address).
  • step 3: send 5 btc or more to the deposit address i give you

accounts default to automatically re-invest 100% of earnings, however lenders can update this percentage at any time from the bitcoin max login area (Can be set as low as 0% if you want the full payment sent each week).

thanks

http://bitcoinmax.com

default password is your deposit address, but this can be updated by lenders at any time within the login area.

F.A.Q. (make sure you have read this before PM'ing me!)

Q. What is the minimum deposit amount?
A. To open an account, you must send at least 5 BTC for your first deposit. After that, subsequent deposits can be any amount.

Q. What is the maximum account size?
A. There is no maximum at the moment.

Q. Can I reuse the same deposit address for additional amounts?
A. Yes

Q. Do I have to message you whenever I make a deposit?
A. No, use the deposit address you were given to deposit as often and as much as you like.

Q. If I deposit funds 'any time' doesn't that mess up your calculations?
A. No, interest is calculated in half-hour blocks, so for example if you deposit 10 bitcoins for 33.5 hours, you'll get 10 * (33.5 / (24 * 7)) * 0.069

Q. Can you confirm my deposit?
A. No. I can however give you a link to http://blockchain.info. If it's in the blockchain then interest will be calculated on it, starting from the first half-hour after it gets included in a block.

Q. I deposited money, when will it show up in my account?
A. If it has at least one confirmation, it should show up when you log in to bitcoinmax. <- this means you may need to log out and back in again

Q. How do I withdraw?
A. That's still via PM at the moment.

Q. I'm a new investor and can't log in to bitcoinmax.com
A. It's likely that I haven't set up your account there yet. This is on the list of things to automate soon.

Q. How old is your BST account? Is it at risk of forced withdrawals?
A. It's one of the very first accounts. There would probably only be 1-3 people that could cause me to get forced out. If for any reason my account has a forced withdrawal, then I may need to also force some or all of my lenders to withdraw from bitcoinmax.

Q. Do you offer any kind of guarantee or insurance against a BST default?
A. No. If BST defaults, your coins are lost.

Q. Can you give me a referral to BST?
A. No, I'm not offering referrals at all.

Q. Can you give me a referral to BST if I pay you XXX.YY btc?
A. Thanks for the offers, but please see the previous question.

Q. What is your real name?
A. While my real name is known and fairly easy to find, I'd prefer not to have it posted and searchable on this forum.

In addition:

while you can withdraw principal at any time, interest is only calculated and paid once per week. so that means if you deposit on a wednesday and withdraw it on a friday, the interest for those 48 hours won't be credited to (or withdrawable from) your account until the folllowing monday, after 21:00.
937  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is the "internet industry" opposed to bitcoin? on: July 10, 2012, 10:19:36 AM
Indeed it seems Bitcoin somehow very often intuitively disturbs many people. It often inspires modern day Luddism.

At the same time, most loud criticism of Bitcoin apparently is derived mostly from ignorance.

- I guarantee a return on investment of 5% per week (this should be reasonably competitive with pirate's obvious Ponzi and similar schemes...  )

wow!

I see the following possibilities:

1. this is some kind of parody
2. mrb's forum account got hacked
3. it is time for me to retire coz it seems everyone in Bitcoin get's 50 times better interest (when non compounded) than old conservative me.

and honestly I have no idea which one it is.
939  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally!!!!! on: July 09, 2012, 11:30:15 PM
I strongly suggest all the uber geeks to get uber bullish on Bitcoin. Pronto!

Yea, yea, I know, I've been telling this non stop to everyone for 18 month now.

But do not tell me later that I did not warn ya.

no, I did not mean this little push to 7$.

Vladimir, why are you upset over this?

Not upset, but disgusted.
