So they have around 9% network hashing power...

How massive of a supercomputer would they have to use to get 2 TH/s?  And does anyone know if they HAVE a supercomputer at that university?

This was posted in 2009, but states that CSCS is run by the university and they had the "Cray XT5"

http://www.ethlife.ethz.ch/archive_articles/090623_top500_nsn/index_EN

The top 500 list of supercomputers currently lists CSCS as #57 with the "Cray XE6".

924  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC group buying on: September 28, 2012, 04:38:14 PM
So for every 0.1BTC I send, means the group is buying 1 Avalon?
Exactly!
So I send you 0.2BTC, which means I want the group to buy 2 Avalons for me. But then who actually pays for them? I'm assuming me? If so, what's the point?

Im not really following either....

Sound's good tom.

Quick question though, can we use an ATX power supply for these ?

They are so much more efficient and of course most of us GPU miners have a bunch of gold PSU's available.

I thought the same thing. Its probably too late to change the design now but what about adding a 4pin molex (like the MMQ) as well as the barrel connector? Not to be used at the same time but so we can choose which to use.

did you update the firmware on the MMQ?

it requires a firmware update

http://btcfpga.com/files/firmware/modminer092612-TLM.bin
It was updated to what I thought was the most recent version, I didnt realize there was one just for TML. Updated and now am not showing any errors but it still is not hashing.

Code:
Tricone Mining Logic, host software v1.11

IF YOU EXPERIENCE HIGH ERROR RATES: try running just one ring at a
time (e.g. use 'ztex:0:0.0' on command line instead of 'ztex:0').
If each ring works error free on its own, but you get errors when
running all three, it means your power supply is sagging.

929  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: miners: how are you going to react to the reward halving? on: September 26, 2012, 09:49:32 PM
I plan on watching what the market does and either continuing mining or not.

But I am perplexed.

One argument is that even when BTC daily production drops [Edit: the block reward], if the exchange rate rises maybe to the $20 range and difficulty doesn't rise much, that come December, mining can still be done profitably --- barely.

So today let's say a 58xx GPU might sell for $150 or whatever.

But if the exchange rate does rise from today's $12 to $20, isn't that $150 worth of value better invested in BTCs than in GPUs?   Sure, the GPU will still be worth $150 or whatever in December after the drop, so there's not a lot of risk in waiting to see if the exchange rate does rise sufficiently to compensate, but you'll definitely miss the opportunity to capture the increase in the BTC/USD from $12 to $20.

And regardless, how much longer after the reward drop before ASICs will decimate GPU mining entirely?

Unless you have really cheap (e.g., $0.05 per kWH) electricity (or free if included in rent, lease, botnet, etc.) the likelihood that you'll continue mining on GPUs in 2013 is approaching zero.

But for now, .... dance while the music is playing (er ..., milk that cow while it is still producing.)

Im newish to bitcoins and have only just recently bought my GPUs and started mining. I bought them second hand and used other hardware I already had laying around. Once my hardware is paid for its all profit for me. Even if I only just breakeven Im happy because I love playing around with computer hardware and I would have done something similar anyway with zero return.

But it is that simple for me, if the market crashes I'll sell my hardware and move on, if it doesnt I'll keep mining.

That's awesome! On both things.

Anyon know if using BAMT would work? Or have a recommended distro?

I would guess BAMT will work, thats what I plan on trying it on. It may not work with all the automated stuff BAMT can do, however.

I dont think Java is included with BAMt either.

Totally agree. I wasnt implying that they would "cheat" us or anything. more of a serious question as to how they would lower the hash rate. Would it be lowering the clock speed? hardware side? firmware? Possibly software/protocol?

I guess i was really leaning more towards the idea of "Could we 'unlock' the jally and bump it up to 5Ghs? Or 4Ghs?
935  Other / Off-topic / Re: "Frist Look at BFL's ASIC Hardware" on: September 25, 2012, 08:21:36 PM
40 gh/s  divided by 8 asic chips is 5 gh/s per chip.

so the jally will be crippled to only run at 3.5 gh/s or worse?

BFL has been saying 3.5Ghs from the beginning, this is no surprise. How exactly they plan on doing this is a different tale...

A small website update today:
  • Update livestats every 60 sec, both round data and top 50. If you already have the page up then refresh it to get the new one with more frequent updates.
  • Link to our friends at bitcurex.com Smiley
  • Display hashrate in Thps instead of Ghps at the top of the webpages
  • Show only number of minutes in the block list for blocks that took less than an hour

The page currently says 1.10Ghps, not Thps.  Wink Grin

Out of curiosity, what MHz and Vcore do the MMQ run at currently?

In the area of 200MHz I believe. Not sure on the vcore.
938  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Horsepower for ASIC on: September 14, 2012, 12:42:15 PM
Thats something else I dont understand, pool difficulty... 1) why do they use a difficulty of 1 when the actual difficulty is over 2 million? 2)how can they change this difficulty? If its easily changed doesnt that defeat its purpose?

I can see how adjusting it will reduce network traffic and thus less work to feed the ASIC but resulting in the same payouts in the end. Makes sense.

I try to be very patient with newbies around here, but every single one of your posts has been massively ridiculous. Can't tell if you're trolling, or just that completely clueless. Almost every single thing you have asked can be found either by searching here on the forums, googling for an answer, or just reading around! Please just stop.

Totally agree, you have taken spoon feeding to a new level...
940  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Horsepower for ASIC on: September 14, 2012, 12:35:18 AM
I made that comment about the C2D laptop because when you're mining on thousands of $ worth of ASICs, why introduce a weak point in the form of a 10 year old desktop CPU? I'm confident that it can run the mining software, but why take the risk?

Very true, however a rackmount server would be a bit overkill I would think. It would be nice and neat but for the pricetag Im not so sure. Maybe one second hand thats in good shape...

But either way, just thinking out loud...
