How much it would cost for international shipping to Santiago, Chile?
Also, when you ship internationally do you lie about the real value to lower the customs fee?

Sorry,   I am not willing to lie on the customs form.
You can calculate the shipping on fedex.com
984  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Billboard! on: May 16, 2011, 01:18:42 AM
I'm going to try to have this up by the end of this week.
Here are a few more designs I am considering.  Pastel colors don't work well for billboards,  so we need high contrast colors for everything.
Please continue to give me your thoughts.
I will be sure to post photos of the actual billboard once it is up.

985  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Protectionism in Bitcoinistan on: May 15, 2011, 11:40:17 PM
Protectionist policies only help domestic industries at the expense of every single other person in the country.

I think your analogy to bitcoins is flawed though.
If a government institutes protectionist policies for a particular industry, automobiles for example,   people are likely to continue to want to drive cars.

With bitcoin, people can simply choose not to use them if the barriers to entry are too high.  (paypal blocking payments,  governments banning them)
If people chose not to use bitcoin the value will drop to Zero, but they will still want to drive cars paid for with dollars.

As a merchant trying to accept bitcoins,  I couldn't agree with your post more!
A few initial things that come to mind for this software would be:

1.  Allow users to generate an unlimited number of keys for receiving,  but those same users can NOT send any money out.

2.  Sending money requires authorization from two or more users.  (No single user can send money)

I would be willing to help test this software in a real world environment if needed.
987  Economy / Economics / Re: please stop sating bubble unless you define/understand it on: May 15, 2011, 11:21:56 PM
As an online merchant who is trying to deal with these exact issues,   I would like to offer a few thoughts.

1.  I think it will be quite some time before items are priced ONLY in BTC.  I think most merchants will list their prices in USD, EUR, Yen, RMB etc and ALSO be willing to accept BTC at the current exchange rate at the time of sale.

2.  To deal with the wild exchange rate fluctuations merchants have three main options:
      A.  Hold onto the BTC in the hopes the value will increase further.
      B. Find another merchant to spend the BTC to.
      C. Exchange them immediately for a national currency.

I suspect "C" will be the most common.  With a little programming a system can be setup to calculate the required amount of BTC required at the time of sale.
In fact,  bitcoincharts.com has a wonderful calculator that would allow a merchant to calculate how many bitcoins they would need to sell to receive the required amount of USD.
See here:

With a little programming,  I am sure an automated system can be setup where the merchant can sell their bitcoins for the expected amount of national currency as soon as they receive the payment.  The sooner people can develop software to do this for common shopping cart programs such as Magento and Open cart,   the sooner major merchants will begin accepting bitcoins as payment.

990  Economy / Trading Discussion / Large Roadblock to Bitcoin being accepted by Large companies on: May 15, 2011, 09:14:52 PM
I run a company of a little over 30 people.  We recently have stated accepting bitcoin as payment and ran into our first security issue recently.
It then occurred to me how incredibly difficult it will be for companies to manage their bitcoins.
With bitcoins,  it just takes one honest mistake,  or one dishonest action by any single person in the accounting department who has access to the bitcoin wallet to lose all of the bitcoins.   Many companies need hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in checking accounts to take care of ongoing company expenses.

What steps can companies take to prevent one employee from transferring all of the money away?

What steps can be taken to prevent an accountant at Microsoft for example,  from stealing $100M worth of bitcoins in one shot?

Please give me your thoughts on security measures that companies will need to take to prevent the theft of all of their bitcoins.
Having the owner handle every single transaction personally is not practical for organizations of any size.
In order for bitcoin to become mainstream,  these problems will need to be solved.

I specialize in optical transceivers used in Cisco equipment, so pricing on my current website for items other than those are not  up to date.
However, I have access to just about any kind of computer parts you guys need at prices that are just about the same as www.newegg.com
I'm working on having an automated shopping cart that supports Bitcoin payments soon,  but we are still a few weeks away for that.

For now, I'm willing to accept payment in bitcoins at whatever the current mtgox exchange is at the time of sale.
What kinds of products would you be most interested in?

Here are a few examples that I think people may be interested in:

Hitachi 1TB HDS721010CLA332 SATA2 U300 7200rpm 32MB Hard Drive  $59
Hitachi 2TB HDS723020BLA642 SATA3 U300 7200rpm 64MB Hard Drive  $125

Samsung 2.5 inch 128GB 470 Series SATA Solid State Drive(SSD), Retail $259
Samsung 2.5 inch 256GB 470 Series SATA Solid State Drive(SSD), Retail $499

GA-583UD1G   GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD5830 1GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card   $249
MSI-585TFR   MSI ATI Radeon HD5850 Twin Frozr II 1GB DDR5 DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card   $277

PowerColor ATI Radeon HD6950 1GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/2x Mini DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card    $269

In most cases I will be able to match or be within a few % of Newegg's price.
Just about everything can ship the same day you order.
If there is anything specific you would like,  email me directly at roger@memorydealers.com
or post the part number below and I will add the price to the list above.
Sending a private message through the forum will give the slowest reply.

995  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 15, 2011, 02:07:31 AM
Bitcoin addresses of all users were removed by me in order to implement new system for enhanced security.
Additional details will be available shortly.

I found that someone changed bitcoin addresses of some users. I'm not sure how the attacker got passwords, but now you'll have to use e-mail confirmation for changing your wallet address.
I'm very sorry that I haven't implemented this feature earlier, so your stolen bitcoins will be reimbursed.
(Please note: I can't garantee that I can do such reimbursment in the future).

Your money is safe and i'll give instructions on setting your address again. Please wait.

A total of ~150 BTC were stolen: 136 from this user and ~14 BTC from others.

Wow!
That is very generous of you!
Can I ask about how many users had their bitcoin addresses changed?
So this sounds like it means that none of my employees violated my trust.  (I'm still implementing stronger security measures.)
Would you agree?

I have been worried all day about who could be a thief at my company.
I was worried even more about it than the missing bitcoins.

Thank you again, and I will gladly continue mining with deepbit because of your help!  (I'll keep a much lower balance though)
996  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 14, 2011, 10:41:42 PM
The IP address information was provided by the Admin from deepbit.
997  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 14, 2011, 10:14:30 PM
I just heard that:
The money was taken by someone logged in from:

94.75.217.249
"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1"

It shows up as being in Holland.

Any other ideas on how I could track this down any further?
998  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 14, 2011, 07:24:49 PM
I still think the most likely is that a browser window was left unattended while logged in.

The strange part is that it was done at about 5:30AM PST (where my office is)
There are lots of cameras at the office that I can check soon, but no one but myself has access at that time of day.

So I suspect it was done somewhere other than at the location of the mining computers.

Are your mining computers on a wireless network?

No,  they are hardwired.

A question: Did you use the same password for deepbit login as for submitting the shares from mining client?

Because if did, then anyone who can spy on your HTTP headers (local network users) then can see your password, too.

On deepbit, you can set another password for worker (even the first), but by default, the passwords are the same. Not safe IMHO.

I think you are right about this being my weakest link.

The deepbit screen hides the actual login password, but displays all the passwords for each worker in the client.
Until today,  we used the same password for both.
Multiple people (about ten) in the warehouse could of looked at the screen and noticed the username and password.
I think my only chance is by finding the IP address of the person who logged into my deepbit account.
