I actually don't care about his personal problems and I actually wish people would leave him (or other people with personal challenges who pop up here from time to time) alone about it. There is a sadistic streak on this forum that comes out where certain people want to "beat up the special kids" whenever they can. It isn't admirable.

Whatever challenges john-conner faces I hope he gets the help he needs and/or otherwise manages to reach some state of happiness and peace in his life.

But he ripped people off. Why shouldn't they be a little bit pissed off?

Ripping people off, yes. That's something I care about, and why I was letting people know about the fake development (copied refactored code). It was a huge red flag. People who listened (not only to me but to the many other knowledgable members who said the same thing) got what they deserved (they got to keep their money) and people who didn't, well they also got what they deserved.

He was ostensibly using the money from our altcoin ecosystem to ply his drug habit.

Whatever the reason, the result is the same, and there is no shortage of reasons. There have certainly been people who have ripped off the altcoin ecosystem for personal enrichment rather than a drug habit. The ecosystem is equally ripped off either way.

to be honest it still doesn't bother me that he copied a few lines of code

It was never a few line of code. There were (multiple) entire significant modules that were identified as refactored (i.e. copied and reformatted). This does not mean that other parts were not also copied, it just means that no one went to trouble to compare and identify all of the copied code. Why should we do his work for him? It is his job to cite the copied portions, no matter how much or how many, not hide them.

Why re-write DirectX or OpenGl? Game devs use it all the time.

That's because the licenses allow it and if you look in the copyright notices for just about any game you will see the required attributions and license notices for the redistributable code. Game devs who use redistributable components don't claim to be geniuses who implemented them from scratch.

Quote
Now I agree his CHARACTER of not attributing that or admitting it is the problem. But still I say this all has nothing to do with the code it has everything to do with the man's honesty, character, and psych issues.

Any updates to the protocol scheduled for the next hard fork ?  RingCT ?

RingCT is already in the code and active on the public testnet. It is scheduled to go live on the main net with the next hard fork.
984  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: December 03, 2016, 12:49:48 PM
it will be changed to equihash? where can i mine this?

Switch to equihash is on December 6 (but 3 second blocks are friendly to solo mining)

So far it is only solo mining using the node software, which you have to compile yourself. Get from https://github.com/steemit/steem. There might be some mining guides upthread or if not then definitely on the previous thread.
985  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Monero over eth? WTF on: December 01, 2016, 08:16:47 AM
It's really depressing that people still don't get that price comparisons between coins are meaningless without considering market cap.

actually it is depressing to see people still think market cap is a worthy comparison for altcoins! let me break it down for you. ETH has 86.5 million coins and only a small amount of it is available to public and the rest is controlled by the owners who manipulate it. and because of this huge available coins the market cap is "artificially grown"

the same thing goes for any other altcoin which has ridiculous amount of coins available to "artificially increase" their market cap.

the things to look at is neither market cap nor price. and if you want to compare you have to consider many factors at the same time a combination of price, volume, premine, daily volume and how it has changed, code, ...

We have a winner.

did anybody manage to withdraw leftover aeon coins from poloniex?
the transaction says pending for quite a few hours..

(withdraw option was available always for us who left the coins on the exchange...)

I only just saw this post. Yes  I managed to withdraw coins and Smooth helped me and BoscoMurray helped me and dnaleor did too IIRC

As I understand it, they only process AEON transactions occasionally (like once a week or something) to avoid having to run the wallet all the time. That means a long wait time, but so far everyone has eventually gotten their coins. If you have trouble you can probably get help by opening a ticket with them.
987  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: December 01, 2016, 02:48:34 AM
Does anyone here know how to mine STEEM on Equihash?
Send replies here or through PM thanks.

As far as I can tell there won't be any change to the mining instructions. The code will change to the new algorithm (equihash) on December 6. If I learn anything different I will post it here.

But as you have it now you are basically throwing money to keep a endless hyperinflation scheme running.

The 'endless' hyperinflation scheme ends in one week.

awwww

then STEEM will just be "bitcoin plus blogging" = "boooorrrrrrrrriiiiinnnnngggggg"

The hyperinflation scheme never added any real value to begin with. Everything else will work much the same as before. Inflate insanely and then pay insane interest to offset nearly all of the inflation? Sorry, that was kind of pointless. Removing it is either neutral or adds value. (Although I was never as strongly against it as were some others, I also never saw much point to it.)

Guys, I had and have literally nothing to do with the design or implementation of busy.org. I donated some money to them to finish development because they had what looked like a solid team and good progress but not really enough funding to keep going. I've also give them some advice but primarily on organization and funding. Most if not all of the concepts and vision for busy were in place and even partially implemented before I got involved with it at all.

So i don't know what this comment about stealing ideas is about (I didn't read all the past messages) but certainly nothing like that happened with busy. Though I will say if these 'ideas' involved posts on bitcointalk that is certainly going to be fair game in practice; anyone can find those with a web search.
991  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: November 23, 2016, 10:00:53 AM
Hey guys
Can y explain me what is different btw Steem and Steem dollars ?
The price is not the same . And if i want to invest what should ill buy / TY

Steem dollars (SBD) is a "pegged" smart coin that is intended to retain a value close to 1 USD (and recently at least has been doing a decent job of remaining close to that). I you are looking to speculate on the price/adoption/market cap of the Steem platform, SBD is probably not what you are looking for. STEEM is the token for that.
992  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: November 22, 2016, 05:04:24 AM
I understand that the changes are coming on Tuesday, but at what block height ?

There is no firm date set since there is no final release of the update implementing the hard fork. I think the tentative date is December 6, but I don't know the exact time or block height.
993  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: November 21, 2016, 06:13:06 AM
There is more to the change in market sentiment than just the chart. There is a huge revamp of the economic model on tap (no more hyperinflation). No one can promise this will make a difference longer term, but for now the market seems to like it.

That does make a lot of sense jwinterm - in your opinion, will it also be easier for AEON when adapting the RingCT implementation?

If Aeon rebases to current Monero version, then it will already be built in.

What an amazing upgrade from ring signatures for AEON!

Is AEON planning to adopt the Kovri i2p router as well? It seems to just makes sense to have that privacy at the nodes

Yes we will. There is ultimately going to be no reason for any coin not to support i2p (the main reason currently is the Java-based i2p router is annoying if you don't normally use Java). It just makes good sense to do. We already work pretty well with Tor though

Is there any blockchain tools available?

I need to explore chain, cut it at wrong place, etc.

chainradar and minergate both have AEON chain explorers.

Latest update on the economic model hard fork. I expect this to be enacted without additional significant changes (my opinion only).

997  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON 2nd gen cryptonote, anon, mobile-friendly, scalable, pruning on: November 11, 2016, 09:30:57 PM
So there is a wallet available with a pruned blockchain? Or is that just being tested ATM?

The instructions are here:

Pruning (aka Light Full Node) test release

This release optionally prunes the blockchain by dropping no-longer-needed information once it is processed and verified by your node. This reduces both memory and storage requirements, and perhaps more importantly reduces the rate at which both increase over time. With pruning enabled, the daemon continues to function as a full node on the network in nearly every way. I will be posting a FAQ to answer some other questions about the details of the pruning functionality.

It was released as a testing version and has some limitations involving rescanning of old wallets (click through and read including the FAQ a few posts after that if this applies to you). Other than that, no problems has been reported in over a year, so it should be fine. The branch has been updated with some patches keeping it in sync with the latest release from master.

AEON FOR THE FUTURE - kidding?

Just downloaded last version of AEON daemon and started it.

Bloody shame, it still use 6G of RAM while blockachain size 3.5G itself Sad
It's way to hell dude, not to future.

Last XMR, BCN, XDN and FCN consume 1-2 G of RAM all together.

The pruning version runs pretty easily in 2 GB and I've been told people have used it in 1 GB.

Less memory usage is coming.
999  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 08, 2016, 04:52:51 AM
I can't find a good answer on how much RAM Zcash requires for its anonymous transactions. Do you happen to know? Also, how bad is it as far as CPU usage? I've seen claims that Zcash can't be used on mobile devices due to these requirements.

I'm not sure about the RAM requirements.

The last estimate I saw was taking about a minute of CPU time for transaction on a desktop. That probably varies depends on specs, but it will very likely be longer and certainly be a high battery drain on mobile.
1000  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 08, 2016, 02:58:18 AM
How does all of this impact Monero? Well ZCash has become a rather interesting and somewhat entertaining side show. It may have a small positive impact on Monero because of the launch fiasco.

Also the usability (RAM/CPU resources) comparison will be made, and Monero will come out ahead easily. As you say this is a medium term concern likely fixed by improved technology longer term, but for now it will be mild to moderate positive for Monero.
