If you have pip installed try pip install zbar. If you don't have pip installed try apt-get install python-pip first.

I just tried creating a fresh wallet on OS X but it worked fine for me. Is there anything non-standard about your installation by any chance? Are you using command line arguments to start it? Could you start a terminal and enter

open /Applications/Electrum.app/Contents/MacOS/Electrum


And tell me if you get any errors or warnings if you try to add labels.

You might want to check the Lite gui. You can toggle the receiving addresses and check the "Hide used addresses" input.

As far as I'm aware it's still possible it's just no longer supported.

The transaction creation is happening on your computer; but it can take up to a couple of seconds depending on your computer and the transaction you are trying to create. Just leave it spinning and it always should work

Receiving addresses are addresses you give out to receive coins on. Change addresses are adresses the client creates for you when ever you send out a payment to increase your anonymity.
