Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best way to convert encrypted wallet.dat -> text and back?

Could you explain what you really want and what you will use it for? gpg -ca will convert the input (wallet.dat) into a conventional symmetrically encrypted ascii text block such as this: -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----
jA0EAwMCZGu2org4FqJgyVXAHqwktVpZRZhDmGTlVnscUL6bxvPjyjv6cNXzKoCy DBcr5tH3mBTDnvwSedBdJEI586w8PuahfdbRoritDrMqgT1KAsGMusMcERQh1gpV V6dpo+ky =oJ2k -----END PGP MESSAGE----- gpg with no flag arguments will decrypt it again. In both cases you'll need to provide a symmetric key, any passphrase will do.

Hi Piuk, The site is looking more excellent and useful every day. Thanks. Some feedback: I am unable to view a semi-logarithmic scale on this graph. Also, perhaps you could come up with a new favicon/gif/ico, like the rubics cube instead of the golden B bitcoin. Being identical with the icon here on the forum is a wee bit confusing. When viewing an address, it would be nice to see each transaction timestamp. Inconsistent presentation: Total Received (85.35 USD) 36.6016 BTC Final Balance 0 BTC Final Balance 0 USD Preferred presentation: Total Received 36.6016 BTC (85.35 USD) Final Balance 0 BTC (0 USD) Alternate presentation: Total Received 36.6016 BTC Total Received 85.35 USD Final Balance 0 BTC Final Balance 0 USD

Do we have the option of having them activated?
That's an interesting question. Yes, I suppose you could send a sample of your victim to a third party (me?). Though, do you realize you could just as easily do it yourself? I'm not a big fan of harming anyone, particularly not those I don't know, who've done me no harm. But theoretically this would be possible.

Inflation != volatility. Bitcoin never technically hyperinflated (>50% monthly depreciation) but it was still a bit annoying trading physical goods.

I'm in a real bind. My designer flaked out on me. A guy by the name of David Thorne. I paid him in Bitcoin for a big project in June, but by the time he worked out what Bitcoin was, they'd dropped in value from $30 to $2 and he kept repeating something about 'legal tender' ad nauseum Is this a joke? Are you the brunt of the joke? I think I saw a presentation in Boston several years ago by this David Thorne in which he engages in bizare correspondence with the goal of publishing and mocking the second party. His work is quite funny actually, but I imagine you know that. Otherwise, brace yourself.

Who does the boring manual labor? We're mostly nerds, yes?
I've already got a non-digital ripple-esque network up here. Two of my buddies work with gold, silver, and everything else. We trade materials, knowledge, and labour, solving crazy problems everyday that challenge everything you learned in grade school. We nerds grow food in greenhouses, go out hunting, fishing, all while connected via radio relay, sat link, using portable solar, hydro, and diesel power. The capital has a fascinating mix of rustic and ultra-modern in the space-station sort of way. The frontiers are a nerd paradise as long as you don't mind using your two feet and two hands. It's not for the lazy, but perfect for the engineer.

I propose Greenland. Independent nation, plenty of fresh water, more guns than fingers to shoot, low taxes, cheap hydro power, dry clean cool air, fiber optic between N. America and Europe, and more space per inhabitant than anywhere else on the planet (well except for that other big ass ice sheet in the south).

✔ The Internet is started by DARPA
✘ cryptography (yes, including bitcoin's SHA256) by the NSA
The NSA claims credit for SHA-2, a publicly available Merkle–Damgård derivative. But you're giving NSA credit for the entire body and history of cryptography?

this is one of our trade secrets, so I can't discuss the details... this is again a trade secret, but no it's not due to our insurance. I respect your desire to keep your trade advantages secret, but it may backfire on your adoption rate. I can not imagine how you've solved the issues I've pointed out and thus leave open the possibility of the worst. I will not be using your service nor will I recommend it to others until much time and real-world experience show you can be trusted. I wish you the best and hope you prove my skepticism unfounded.

Most people are incapable of seeing anything not smack in front of their eyes - investors included. If you presented the growth charts of the internet ten years ago and then suggested someone invest in networking, fiber optic, browsers, sites, etc, the connection was clear -- they want a piece of that growth. If you were to show declining bitcoin charts, well... their eyes go dark and their ears go deaf.

1. Your favorite Merchant
Myself.
2. What does the Merchant sell?
Anything but his own grandmother... including several hand made crafts from the Arctic.
3. Do you have alternatives to this merchant? / 4. Why this merchant over the alternatives?
Nowhere else on this planet. Heck I think I know all the bitcoin users in Greenland by name. Bitcoin provides a great opportunity to pay artists around the island in cash, and sell on the net with little risk.

You seem to provide an excellent service. I wish you the best of luck and fortune. Please, if you don't mind suffering my skepticism, could you address a few of my concerns below: - Resilient and professional payment system. Crypto X Change customers will never have to deal with frozen bank accounts. / Sepa and euro transfers will never be interrupted.
Can you elaborate on this? Is it not possible for a European bank to block a SEPA transaction? - Credit Cards Within the next few weeks you will be able to purchase bitcoins, and bullion with credit cards world wide!
How are you protecting yourselves from chargeback? ... entirely through liability and indemnity insurance, a special legal framework, or..? - Special Mining Pool Programme (pool operators, please get in touch - both you and your miners get special exchange privileges)
Such as...?

Hi Adam..,
You've stated in another thread you are not familiar with PGP, so I'm afraid my request may be too much to ask. Currently and for most of bitcoin's active history, the PGP web of trust model used by OTC (over the counter trading IRC channel) has been the most reliable rating system used by core bitcoiners. As you point out, PGP and IRC may be too complex for most users, particularly as bitcoin goes mainstream. However...
I think the bitcoin mercantile community needs strong identity and web of trust models. How do I know that some merchant on your site is trust worthy? Because ten users say so? Why do I trust them? Who are they to me? Can I rate raters? Can I trust the raters that I trust and invalidate the ratings from users I do not trust? How many degrees?
This is what PGP and any web-of-trust model brings to the table. It would be great if you integrate with OTC and allowed users to link to and confirm their identities elsewhere on the net, such on this forum, facebook, OpenID, vel similia.
Cheers, Netrin
