41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: September 04, 2016, 10:28:35 PM
Do you guys have any questions you would like Paul to answer on the crypto show tonight?
Not particular to him, more to Factom in general: Do you have any hopes or whishes or desires about what could be done by the community at the current state and with M2 (when? WHEN? Wink )?
42  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: September 04, 2016, 03:53:46 PM
Paul is working hard, even today on sunday: https://github.com/PaulSnow?tab=activity

Looks like the last commits were just minor tweaks and no more fundamentals or critical bug fixing.

- Proof of Existence: a document existed in this form at a certain time.
- Proof of Process: a document existed and is linked to this new updated document.
- Proof of Audit: an updated document can be verified to have changed according to a set of rules.

...but also about the way people think and act. That's why it's called "honesty-system". It doesn't prevent dishonest behaviour, it doesn't make it impossible to manipulate or delete data. But Factom would reveal it.

To understand how powerful that is it needs some knowledge about how it's handled today and how much manipulation is going on everywhere on this world with data.

Hi! I think I just realised how FCT, EC and fiat will correlate, and its very fascinating!
But what I still don't understand is the data storage thing. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
These entries are stored on one of the Servers that provide the EC credits, right? They store the actual data, and only store a hash on the blockchain to be able to proof what you mentioned above. If say, a company was to change some of the data or added new data, it would be stored on the EC server, right? So what if, for some reason, all of the data on the EC servers (including Factom) were to be destroyed, would the company be able to "restore" their data (the proofs) regardless?

#edit
I would assume they could, because they could calculate everything from the hashes on the blockchain. But I'm not 100% percent sure. cheers!

thanks!
Nope, it doesn't work this way. The actual data is stored by the companies as it is currently in their datacenters. With factom they create a merkle tree of this data or hashes of each file (as they like and dependent on use case) and store it in the factom blockchain. If they do it in regular intervals, they have a proofable hashed history of their data. This can be used to either check the integrity of the current data, or to audit the status of data back in history.

I suggest to have a look at the documentation for further details: https://github.com/FactomProject/FactomDocs

No he specifically says " It is designed to keep the price of a Factoid low".

At which minute please?

This coin is not worth holding. It was not designed to be a speculative asset. It is a network token, If it has value so be it. A coin like XMR is clear private store of value. BTC is a public store of value or semi anon one with benefits of its own. FCT is not worth holding IMO. Watch this interview with DEV PAUL SNOW OF FACTOM INC.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1noFK6M8ktU

"The system is designed to keep the price low" - quote from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1noFK6M8ktU

FCT goes up, it will come down. It was designed so.

Love Factom and the initiative. However from a investment standpoint it just does not make sense to buy and hold a network Token like this.
Thanks for you input. But before posting, you should have at least tried to understand what is said on the video and learned the difference between factoids and entry credits. Scroll up a couple of posts and you'll see your troll attempt is not very good Wink

Btw: no need to fear FCT as competitor to XMR. They have completely different purposes and can grow next to each other in peace  Cool

1/ with BTC - is 0.005 USD per hash (my guess) expensive ? How much is it with FCT ?
See https://shop.factom.com/
You get 1000 Entry Credits for $10 = $0.01 per EC. One EC can hold up to 1kb of data. A SHA256 hash has a size of 32 bytes. So ~30 hashes fit into one entry.
30 hashes on the Bitcoin blockchain would cost 15x as much = $0.15 (when I use your numbers).

(...)

They make profit with that. Actually 1 EC = max. 1kb of data = $ 0.001
If you change them by yourself? Good to know Smiley

However, transaction fees vary on bitcoin and tend to raise over time. You also don't want to bloat the bitcoin blockchain with billions of hashes.

2/ prices may vary, but for both I'd say
Yes, probably for both. Not sure on Factom. However, Factoms masterstroke is, that this doesn't affect the price if you want to store data. The price is fixed at $0.01 per EC. In the moment someone buys EC, a federated server calculates how much factoids are worth $0.01 and burns them. If a Factoid is worth $0.01, 1 Factoid is burned. Is it worth $1 than only 0.01 Factoids get burned. The customer who wants to store data doesn't have to care about this.

3/ custom blockchains probably not with BTC, but there are other solutions, and what is the reason to try with FCT if the data is not guaranteed to be stored ?
I guess I don't understand what you mean.

4/ ?? you "buy" xxx ?? What is the difference ?
From step 2: when someone buys EC (which are needed to store data), then he would need Factoids which get burned for these ECs. However, Factom Inc. handles this for its clients. They just say "give me 1k EC please". Factom says "ok, here it is" while they are automatically creating a wallet, sending factoids to it and convert them into ECs. Since EC are not tradeable but just a token to store data and because it's value is fixed at $0.01, the customer technically doesn't own cryptocurrency and never needs to have a complicated bookkeeping to record the current exchange rate at the moment the data is stored. Not to mention the regulations involved when you buy/own/use a real cryptocurrency.

beside a new website and some bla bla i dont think u can expect anything to be delivered in september
the market reaction is clear and we will see sub 500 maybe even sub 400 again

dont get me wrong i think FCT have a high potential

but the time to raise and stay high is not here now

coins who have lending added at poloniex

are way more vulnerable to massive sells

think my words when it happens
You realize they are actually making money and have a growing corporate customer base ? Based on that comparison alone vs other alts Factom is undervalued.  If you factor in the real possibility 1 billion entries thats has been discussed with a potential client in the banking industry. At that level, it was explained to me that a FCT would be worth around $400/US. Not trying to hype here, I'm just trying to show the actual potential. Factom is a sleeper because it's so different/business model is a little hard to grasp, and maybe not as sexy.  I think most people haven't made that paradigm shift/realization into its real use potential. Consider its first to market advantage and the small 8 mil float also when others awake. I wouldn't want to not be holding my position trying to catch it on the way up. From all my research this is as solid a crypto as they come. If I've missed something or dead wrong please chime in and let me know, I'm here to get it right.
How much would be the cost for a client when FCT=$400? Did you make this calculation?
It would be exactly the same, as the conversion rate fct <-> ec is dynamically adjusted by the federated servers so that it always costs the same to store up to 1kb of data.
49  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: September 03, 2016, 09:56:51 AM
I am sorry, I did not get what revolution factom brings, if the data is not guaranteed to be stored ?
And for storing hashes only, Bitcoin can serve quite well and cheap.
Or am I wrong ?
Yes.

  • Adding entries to Bitcoin blockchain directly is very expensive
  • Prices for Bitcoin transactions are not stable. Cost for adding 1kb data to factom is.
  • You can't create custom chains on Bitcoin
  • To store data on Bitcoin blockchain you need to own Bitcoin and handle all the bookkeeping and legal stuff involved with having cryptos, which is a nogo for many companies. At Factom you buy EntryCredits which can't be traded and in the background Factoids get burned. That's a perfect abstraction layer to allow companies using a blockchain without dealing with cryptos.
50  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Querying Blockchain.info address tags or similar service on: September 02, 2016, 05:33:36 PM
I'm currently writing a research paper about the bitcoin network and need access to a list of well known addresses linked to e.g. MtGox, Silk Road, SatoshiDice, BitPay etc.

However, I can't find a API call on blockchain.info to retrieve this information or at least a search field on the website. Do I just miss them?

Do you know any other sources for this information?
Yes,www.walletexplorer.com can help you find weather an address belongs to particular service only and only if they have listed/named it in their notes on the blockchain.Anyhow,I'm more curious about the paper you're coming up with. What does it proves? Why SatoshiDice and Bitpay ? What do you mean by addresses linked to Silk Road ? There were a n number of merchants and buyers with different addresses,no way you can figure out weather they're linked to Silk Road or not.
Great, thank you! I can remember to have seen that site looong ago Smiley

The paper is related to this one: https://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~smeiklejohn/files/imc13.pdf
However, I can't disclose my topic yet. Also I don't want my real name beeing linked to this account.
51  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Querying Blockchain.info address tags or similar service on: September 02, 2016, 03:58:09 PM
I created a quick 'n dirty python script to crawl blockchain.info/tags:

http://pastebin.com/c3wXxQVk

However, many important addresses are still missing like mtgox and silk road  Sad
52  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Querying Blockchain.info address tags or similar service on: September 02, 2016, 12:32:30 PM
I just found https://blockchain.info/tags but it seems like you can't search for a specific address or service. The only option I see is to write a crawler script which extracs all addresses from all pages  Undecided

54  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 01, 2016, 12:47:02 PM
What about the problem of some people about the "view key" feature. They said that a court order could make you show your transactions in the clear thru view key. Is this true? Why is that feature even there? It might become Monero's weakness.

If you have information, you can be compelled to reveal it by only and exactly that force which is able to compel such performance.  I fail to see in what sense the view key mechanism is a problem in such a scenario. The problem, in any such a case, is not the view key, but the fact that you retained the information.  If you wish to preclude being forced to reveal information, you must destroy it.

Forcing somebody to support official investigation agains himself is against human rights and does not happen in constitutional democracies. If it does in a nation, that nation defaces itself as being hostile to human rights.

Lots of investors here waiting for the big boom on September 1st, when (hopefully) XMR will go live on DNMs. Bad news: https://ghostbin.com/paste/kmnzz

If some TOR node operators follow this call and just the 3 letter agencies nodes are running, it's better not to use TOR on that day. Your anonymity may be lower than in the normal internet. Beware! And don't speculate on sudden XMR demand by DNM customers. At least not for this day Wink

Having choices is good: https://github.com/monero-project/kovri
That's pretty cool! What about the markets, are they available via I2P as well?

Hi,

erstmal herzlichen Dank für das super Tool!  Smiley

Fertig Smiley

Nice letter to Series A investors:

https://www.reddit.com/r/factom/comments/50a4cl/factom_letter/

I especially like this part:
Quote
Business Result - Signed major new customers (DHS). Development Result - Factom Federation testnet is live.
So it's now official that DHS not did just fund Factom, they also signed a contract.

And this one:
Quote
Goals For August / September 2016:
Development Goal: Promote Factom public Testnet release candidate to production.
