A lot of governments are opposing bitcoin from very long time, maybe due to the anonymous nature of the network, but now a days a lot of countries are legalising and adapting to the bitcoin demand in their country and legalising it. The opposing governments are actually missing a lot and they are not promoting development into the future by rejecting block-chain, the same happened in India also but the people and the block-chain related companies filed a case in the court which ultimately lead to the removal of ban and now India is also one of those countries where bitcoin is legal. Yes, usually investment in altcoins are no good for long term hold. It is still better be in a short term to avoid losses in the future especially when most of the whales dump. Sure it's really likely that the database wouldn't be given to some criminals(or publicly leaked) today or tomorrow, but yea this is something people shouldn't set aside for the meantime and deal with it in the future instead; which I assume people are doing.

From my perspective and experience, the major reason why I got scammed in the past was greed. Most people enter into the cryptocurrency space with the mindset that it's a get well quick scheme. My first escapade was with HYIPs, I wanted to double my btc and ended up with nothing. I moved from one HYIP to another until I was totally broke. That was when it dawned on me that I was chasing shadows.
