161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple is a Trojan Horse on: April 06, 2019, 06:14:09 PM
XRP is the king of scamcoins, it's not a crypto.

One day you'll wake up and see 100 billion more XRP added to the total supply, why? because it's not a crypto, it's a centralized scamcoin.
162  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Impacts of IEOs on the crypto-ecosystem on: April 04, 2019, 12:19:53 AM
IEO which in full means initial exchange offering is not a new topic in the crypto eco-system. Long before Binance Launchpad, several projects have taken that path to raise funds for there project by offering the native currency of their platform to traders on exchange. I remember observing a few on mercatox some years back. It was definitely no big deal as at that. Today IEO has become a menacing rave in the crypto-space owing to the fact that majority of the ICO in time past have failed to list on reputable exchange for investors. regardless of the hype and uniqueness of a project,  securing reputable exchange with good trade volume is key to the liquidity of digital assets and sad to say it today's crypto investors don't want to wait for products. They rather sell the hype than wait for the long term yield that will accompany this project gaining real-life application.
The impact of this IEO model proposes three debilitating factors on the blockchain community.

1. Lack of widespread distribution of nodes and monopolization of the. Today's IEO model literally plays into the hands of whales. With the likes of bittrex favoring high purchase by a single user. It's not hard to see whales controlling the valuation of these upcoming projects cryptocurrency on exchange. Asides from prices, centralization of nodes can be dangerous as it can lead to treats on the network with respect to mining. A Single-user acquiring a subset of the network can be catastrophic.

2. The IEO mechanism does not truly favor long term growth of this project. Now it's important to note that the majority of these coins sold on exchange are bought not by investors but by traders who actively trade on exchange. Majority of this traders do not no a thing about this project and will dump at the slightest profit or in the face of the slightest loss. Some might say it's part of the market cycle. Weak hands selling to stronger traders but it's key to note that community is very important in crypto compared to other market and it's almost impossible to build suck around traders who do not care or look towards the success of this project.

3. This exchange is also doing too little to protect the interest of participants who take part in these IEOs. In my opinion, it shouldn't just be about raising funds and meeting Hardcaps. These exchange should take up more roles. Some examples I picked up from the Pledgecamp project concept includes. Strategic disbursements of funds raised during these IEO events based on achievements of milestones, certification and other pre-agreed terms all design to ensure this project doesn't just bail off with people's money or fail to develop products that can attract value to the native currency.

In conclusion, a lot more tinkering needs to be done in order for IEOs to continue to flourish and promote the growth of the blockchain community. If steps aren't taken to prevent these impacts, we might see the IEO trend failing just like the majority of ICOs have failed.

Excellent analysis, i share many of the same opinions and sentiments about IEO as you've vividly expressed.
163  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / The Crypto Enviroment is Changing on: April 02, 2019, 04:53:49 PM
For the past 3-4 months, there has been drastic shifts in the world of crypto. I firmly believe that the markets did reach the bottom in early Dec. 2018, where Bitcoin hit 3300 and ETH was trading around 82usd. Since then, there's been a significant rebound for most altcoins; almost on par with a minor altcoin spring that has/is occurring.

Today, many altcoins have surpassed or nearing their ATH vs BTC valuation. More notable coins are nearing their ATH in USD valuation. What this all means is that Bitcoin's dominance over the markets will continue to dwindle, as it's contending with forthcoming specific-niche oriented multi-million dollar/billion-dollar businesses. This is quite healthy for the entire crypto climate, because where there's money to be made and upcoming competition, many real-world businesses will rise to the challenge and throw their capital into various of cryptocurrencies or crypto-related businesses. More and more money will be poured in, to gain market share either directly through cryptos or through related businesses.

Culminating with all that, there's many signs that point towards fully legitimizing cryptos (in the public eye), notably the SEC, through regulations and potentially the long-awaited (and hyped) BTC ETF approval. If that occurs, then almost all of U.S.'s allies will follow suite with similar regulations. This is why SEC is really a pivotal point in determining the future of crypto atm.

To a lesser degree, crypto has been behaving inversely to the world-market sentiments, for the past 3-months or so crypto's valuation can be somewhat correlated with what's happening in the world markets. A lot of unrest and a lot of indicators pointing towards a global recession nearing soon.

When regulations collide with a negative sentiment world-market and when BTC halves in 2020, we could be seeing a major bull-run occurring during or after those times. I'm not a fortune teller, but the evidence and most movement is increasingly depicting a more positive crypto atmosphere and climate as a whole now and in the near future. In 2017-2018 the bullmarket was driven by freshness and mostly FOMO. Crypto as a whole today, has never witnessed more market and business movements; that's not seen as changing anytime soon. This all leads into a solidification of infrastructure and use, where real value is going to be derived from for all cryptos.

First, want to say this was an excellent idea Theymos and if you need someone to grow this KYC process further (for maximum exposure), I'm your man. Time to rid the plague of all the corrupted assholes and scammers; having 100% transparency in crypto is a brilliant idea.

Why should you submit it? It's like everything you do in life, you prove who you are and your good intentions? Fuck privacy and all you shady characters who linger on these forums for nothing more than profits. This is the real world. Uncle Sam spies on you daily, there's nothing that you can do to resist this new era.
You're a high ranked member here and as a Hero Member you must've spent at least two years in this forum. But it's really amusing that you still haven't come in terms with the fact that Theymos likes to pull a prank every April 1st. Well, I hope you submitted your credit card details too and also submitted your private keys to that Darkstar thread here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5126721.0

Imagine taking this thread seriously, even after knowing this is an April fools joke. I recommend viewing people's profiles and clicking that April Fool's verification (above their image) to understand that they are partaking in the event.

166  Other / Meta / Re: TK808's Merit Source Application [ALT Disc, ANN, ANN Tokens, Services] on: March 30, 2019, 06:21:36 PM
I wouldn't worry about occasionally/accidentally meriting what later turns out to be a plagiarized or otherwise unworthy post.
Yeah, though I would suggest that anyone--not just merit sources--check to see if a post is plagiarized before meriting it, especially if it's being made by a newbie and looks like it was written in a "professional" style.  That might sound like prejudice against newbies...and that's because it is.  It's unfortunate, but the vast majority of lower-ranked accounts are non-English speakers trying to write stuff in English in order to get paid for bounties, and there have been so many examples of them resorting to plagiarism that it's almost the norm at this point.

Avoid sending merits to friends just because they asked. It's fine if it's an otherwise merit-worthy post but the fact of asking should invoke some healthy skepticism.
Agree, and this is the reason why I don't send merits exclusively to you and most of the members of DT1.  Even though the best posts tend to come from that list of members, I don't want my merit-giving behavior to give even the appearance of being a political thing.

The thing is, merit sources are under more scrutiny than the average bitcointalk member, and you definitely don't want to hand out merits to friends, alts, or for any reason other than rewarding a good post.  Oh, and I'm not sure why Cryptopreneurbrainboss can't be a merit source along with TK808.  I think the altcoin sections need multiple merit sources out on patrol.

Yeah, I'm pretty adamant and aware about puppets (i can spot them pretty easily) and increasingly those who attempt to manipulate the system (plagiarism, merit sharing and etc) for account farming/bounties (essentially, nurturing an account to gain more weight).

Secondly, yeah i was hesitant on giving him merit to begin with; really a one-off event. The vast majority of my merit went to real credible users (feel free to dig through the history, I'm sure many have already). Giving merit to friends and interests, ie boosting their status, is something I obviously won't do, the last thing I want is negative trust on my BTT profile for betraying everyone's trust in me.

To Theymos: I know you're watching and waiting to see the community members dig into all these candidates who want msource status, I'm pretty sure you'll be considering this application specifically, but as many stated there is little risk in promoting merit sources since they are in the public view and will be scrutinized. Promoting individuals like Cryptopreneurbrainboss is something i do recommend, there's no way one person can significantly affect the outcome of these sections that are larger and much more difficult to navigate than the Bitcoin sections.
167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's the most toxic personality types in crypto? on: March 30, 2019, 04:44:45 PM
The shill armies are real, on Bitcointalk ANNs, through Telegram groups and virtually elsewhere. While I don't necessarily know the type of personality, more often than not a lot of bigger ICO's that are more shady will hire full time posters, chatters and etc to promote their coin or to have activity "pumped" so it looks like it's a highly sought-after coin/backed by real value. Paying for fake volume, or targeting one of the known exchanges, is one of many methods post-ico or post-launch method of these types of behaviors, to "display that that coin has significant value"

Unless you dig deep into these accounts, you will never know the difference. This is ultimately a problem that will never go away, as it's preferred method of "promotion" by scam ICOs.

There's only a few solutions to this problem and that's really to speak out if you believe this is occurring (with something you're highly invested into ofc) and let people know that there's possible corruption and manipulation occurring. For most, this is not something anyone will ever come to notice until it's too late.
168  Other / Meta / Re: TK808's Merit Source Application [ALT Disc, ANN, ANN Tokens, Services] on: March 30, 2019, 04:20:14 PM
Hey Asche, been a while man. I remember your involvement with Nevra, when your account was a month old or so, and received some of your first merits from that https://bpip.org/smerit.aspx?to=asche. I'm pretty impressed overall by how active you've been. You were offering to translate the thread into French and were quite involved soon after. The entire point here is not to call you out for previous activities, but to show something a bit deeper, that just because someone is a noob promoting something or willing to gain something, doesn't necessarily mean they have bad intent. Some of these guys are genuinely interested in crypto and etc, and to recognize specific individuals for their contributions, even though they may be driven by monetary incentives, sometimes helps the forums move forward and broaden those noobs outlook. In an ironic sense, I've had a direct impact on your outlook with what was trying to be achieved with Nevra; either consciously or subconsciously.

I'm not perfect, nor will I be perfect. Granting merit on the basis of posts is completely subjective, even myself is not completely immune to certain things. I was granting a lot of merit recently because i know I'm kinda in the spotlight here and should be displaying my judgement and capabilities. Because of that, I was looking for posts the other day to merit, and will continue to do so as long as i have smerit available.

Disregarding all that,

1) The first post, he's a friend of mine. And with 1 smerit i had (btw this is the first smerit i had earned in like over 3-4 months and prior to all this attention i received), he was asking to merit his thread, so I did. He's a highly reputable guy and on a more fundamental level, translation services help strengthen the local community boards. I support all translators, because they directly impact the activity on those local boards. Even though they may be driven by monetary incentives (lets face it, most people are in crypto), doesn't necessarily discredit it. These things have direct or indirect impacts on the alts sections of Bitcointalk as a whole, in a mostly positive manner.

2) Altcoin stuff, he's sharing his wisdom. You don't have to agree with everything someone is saying to like it, or to understand underlining wisdom. He's not promoting a coin, but was trying to share his thoughts. I respect that, i agree with most of what was stated.

3) The last one, was a mistake. That post is actually a copy-cat of something similar i viewed (and was assisted by) 2 weeks earlier, which was also an advertisement (in a sense). This was the original post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5118082.0 i was essentially thinking that that was the same post, when in fact the user copy-pasted what that topic/user wrote, changed it up to crowdholding and published it on its own. I immediately recognized the mistake after i gave that person merit for previous efforts. Publish0x is an interesting site, and yes that post did help me discover that website, in which i will be using for information. Merit ofc, on the basis of helping me, the entire premise of meriting someone is if you actually gained something of it, because you won't be the only one.

unfortunately with any unilateral system there will always be a few people who suffer and unfortunately it is you in this case.

Others will disagree with this I am sure, but I think its the right thing to do in this case.

Please no one else ask me - no begging for merits people..

I appreciate your kind gesture and everyone else's. Since i've been flooded with merit in the last day, i suppose i have no alternative option (nullifying this thread basically) other than merit to rank up.

But, again, thank you dude and everyone else who's been understanding.
170  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ICObench Top Expert show on Youtube on: March 29, 2019, 04:37:48 PM
It's time to start cleaning up all the corruption on ICOBench, instead of promoting individuals (and your site) who hold absolutely no significance, may be profiting indirectly through reviews and regurgitating other people's opinions/already expressed thoughts. There's a great piece of research done some-time ago, and it applies to bench aswell: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-crypto-currencies-promoters-specialre/special-report-little-known-to-many-investors-cryptocurrency-reviews-are-for-sale-idUSKCN1NW17S

ICOBench is great for initial research into new coins launching, i use it daily, anything further than that, avoid the website entirely and search for key information/feedback/opinions and "expert views" elsewhere.

A sample is user Favouredhart, the profile has been autobanned, the most likely reason for autobanned is plagiarism case. Make sure that you have given your smerit to non-alt of spammers or any plagiarist.

I'll run the profiles through the checker, if msource is something i do get awarded with. Aside from that, useful tool to aid me when checking for puppets.
173  Other / Meta / TK808's Merit Source Application [ALT Disc, ANN, ANN Tokens, Services] on: March 28, 2019, 07:05:03 PM
I've witnessed, devoted, created, lead, innovated and shared, I've virtually done everything in a righteous manner, all specific to alt-coins. I've been on these forums for over 5 years, with brief hiatus periods in-between. In total, I've invested 94days in total logged in specifically for altcoins only (some afk ofc), but that should give some indication on my enthusiasm and dedication towards altcoins.

This all begun back in 2013, during the silk-road incident and first Bitcoin climb to 1100-1200 usd, i was amazed. My memory has slipped on how i was introduced to Bitcointalk, but i believe it was through an exterior money-making forum, where Goldcoin was being promoted. Through my time on these forums, I've never strayed away from one core concept, community. Community is everything central to these forums and often I've gone to great lengths to support that community: calling out scams, sharing my wisdom (more recently), and analyzing coins to a greater extent. My intent has always been simple, to help new members gain the insight and wisdom on what crypto-currency truly is, where it's been and where it's potentially going.

The reason for alt-coins is simple, it's dynamic and much more in-depth than Bitcoin. Not only are you exposed to one particular blockchain, but you're proactively analyzing the progress of Bitcoin through the lens of broader audiences. Watching the evolution of crypto-currency and being apart of that evolution was the greatest gift that has not stopped giving.

I consider myself a very-well versed, an expert on altcoins. Not necessarily with technical, but with virtually all other aspects that incorporates them. I consistently learn, educate myself and share that knowledge with others. Due to my extensive insight (one good record is: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4930584.0), i feel I'm suitable to help drive discussions and reward unique individuals who display inherent good-intent and understanding about altcoins as a whole.

Many of you reading this will understand, fewer of you are set-in-stone about your mindset of how Bitcoin is the be-all-end-all, the biggest, the most secured and the first. I understand your perspective, i agree with some of it, but i will argue against most of it; because it's fundamentally incorrect. Bitcoin is inherently linked with the fate of altcoins, because without the evolution of altcoins, Bitcoin's valuation and infrastructure would not be what it is today. Why? The reason is simple, exposure to audiences, investors and everything else imaginable.

Why I'm here is simple, i want to help grow the altcoin discussions and help them mature more. I was motivated by my desire to finally become a lengendary member, where i was convinced and influenced that i could potentially be doing more.

Merit for all intensive purposes is fatally flawed and skewed, especially in the altcoins section, i don't agree with the system, but my vision is not short-sided to understand the overall impact (good and bad) for ANNs/Bounties specifically. If i can help change that in altcoins, then i will take that opprtunity to help. There are two reasons I still use Bitcointalk 1) to help provide insight, 2) to learn about new coins.

I encourage you to carefully consider this application and who i'm and what i represent/have represented.

Note: I do not necessarily agree with all the topics/posts or the quality of them, but i respect their critical thought, analysis and problems they are trying to address. All the while, trying to understand and engage the larger communities perspectives. Some of these threads have over 10k views, 10,000 people have potentially been helped by an input from 1 member who struck up a conversation or asked a question. This is fundamental to how i believe cryptocurrency should behave, learning and respecting eachother.

We all know a lot of altcoin discussions are driven by bounty signatures, but setting that aside from a moment, there is real value from the threads below. I received 50 smerit today, and since you guys were so generous to me today, i was generous with the threads below.

There's so much more, this was taken from the first 15 pages in Discussions only. ANN's are much more difficult to merit, because people are so polarized when viewing them. Giving merit from this perspective will virtually be never done, only if a coin has exceeded various of milestones and proven somewhat when trading and through the community. Grin is an excellent recent example, but has had a flood of merit already. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5090427.0

I'll leave it open for you the community to decide. Thanks for all your support here, and the other thread i made today. You guys drove me to doing this app.

Easy enough to apply, thank you. I will probably do the application.

But, i ultimately do hold the topic of this thread as the reasoning I'm here today.
175  Other / Meta / Re: Grant Me Legendary Status on: March 28, 2019, 05:55:17 PM
There's no denying the largest part of Bitcointalk is indeed altcoin discussions, ANNs and the increasingly defunct tokens section. Spam or not, it is the largest and generates the most traffic.

I'm going to shift my perspective here a bit, merit is dead in altcoins and i truly do understand that now. Altcoins have always been shunned by the vets of Bitcointalk, out of ideology or because of the pure spam. Today, hate against altcoins occurs to a much lesser degree due to the evolution of altcoins tech, and having impact on Bitcoin in a variety of ways and shapes much of the discussion about Bitcoin. The vary fabric of what Bitcoin is, is also shaped by alternative coins and the countless of business/services that resolve around those alts. Pretty basic knowledge, many of you already understand this, others can refute a Bitcoin-only world, but that's not inherent to what Bitcoin actually represents from my perspective.

Thus, Bitcointalk's grasp on altcoins is increasingly diminishing in recent times, this is due to a variety of factors and limited resources (mods) to actively clean up that section. It's always been a shitstorm, but the shitstorm has grown out of control, to the point where some of the more reputable business/coins, some of the true gems, want no affiliation with Bitcointalk anymore. That's all fine, because as you guys and myself know, Bitcointalk is for Bitcoin, but was once (and still is to a much lesser extent) the voice for all altcoins.

Leading into merit. I truly believe that altcoin discussions is on-par with bitcoin discussions in terms of quality. It has significantly grown and matured in the last year, I don't necessarily know how Theymos and some of you older dudes view altcoins these days, so i can't really comment on what the best interest or how you want to dictate these forums.

But, if you do want to assist altcoins and are looking for merit source candidates, then i would not hesitate to take that position (or apply for it), because i could proactively assist that community on a more fundamental level, helping to shape discussions and continue to what i love to do. My comments about merit are due to the frustrations with the system, and i agree with the scarcity of ranked accounts (making it more prestigious and limited), reducing scams and all that. Don't get me wrong, merit has significantly impacted alt-sections in both a good and bad way. But, for all intensive purposes, it has failed alts more than it helped; especially the noobs of altcoins, who i was once like, getting them to use bitcointalk. I'm on these forums daily, reading every new ANN/token announcement, and going through discussions.

Feel free to follow up with me here, or pm on how i would go about applying to become a merit source for altcoins. I tried searching for it, but unable to find something.

For the record, i only look at 4 primary forums: Altcoin discussions, Altcoin ANNs, Tokens (altcoins) and occasionally services/marketplace.

What do you need the Legendary title for? It doesn't come with any special privileges. And you haven't even reached the upper bound of Legendary activity.

If it bothers you that much - report your posts here. Apply to become a merit source. Be part of a solution if you think there is a problem.

It's the culmination of having a louder voice and being associated with being "trusted." This is explicitly and infinitely more noticeable in altcoins section, again, where i primary post. Hero is great and i do carry significant weight when calling out scams, or bullshit (there's an infinite amount of it in altcoins).

It's also something i always wanted to achieve on Bitcointalk, ever since the earlier days. I just feel like I've earned it, but again that's me who feels it, you don't have to necessarily agree with that. I understand it sounds like i want to be given something for free, but again, i truly feel like i've achieved it, even though it may not be immediately apparent or even noticeable.

I don't want to participate in being a merit source, because i never supported the system. Neither do i want you guys to look through my post and give me credit, please don't waste your time with that, i almost feel bad. I'm not here for merit.

But anyways, thank you all. I will take my leave, before this becomes a post where i'm refuting everyone's input/perspective and everyone is awarding me merit for my previous actions. That was not my intent or something i expected/understood.

Nothing is for free and you have to do it the same way as others have done or i am doing !

Get out of your BOX and dont be Lazy and try it to get some Merits but not in form like this thread to ask or beg for !

It's easy to disprove ignorance once one digs deeper than the surface. Now, you've done some great work don't get me wrong, but the same comment i made above applies to you aswell.

How is attaining 500-1k merit virtually impossible? Others have done it. I myself reached 591 merits from 250 in a decent timespan(I think) without trying super hard. The problem is on you, not on the merit system.

You've also made double the posts, in 1/2 the time. Lets face it, if you're not activity seeking out merit, farming internet points, you are not going to obtain them. The system has come to a halt in many respects. I will not comment further on the failures of the system, as i've done so previously in a different thread a few months back.

Edit 10/19 - Big thank you to everyone, especially TMAN for helping me to obtain my legendary status. I truly do appreciate it.

Admins of BTT, i'm requesting to become a legendary account. The merit system has failed, unless you're actively farming those merits on the Bitcoin sections specifically targeting the merit "whales," then reaching 500-1k merit is virtually impossible. I'm nearing 1k activity and before the grand shitcoin flood, that was sufficient enough to prove yourself to achieve that status.

I've served my time and assisted the Bitcointalk community immensely for the past 5 years, from my perspective/opinion. I've always stayed true to what these forums represent and the underlining ideologies that Bitcoin and blockchain was founded on.

Edit
: i exclusively post within altcoins and only altcoins. I've done so since the start, there are many reasons for this. There's a lot i've done for crypto since the end of 2013, ofc i'm not picture perfect, nor do i have posts that are significant in a broader perspective. But, I've done a considerable amount of good (again this is my perspective) and things that are lesser known that have ultimately improved the crypto sphere as a whole.

I'm not an avid Bitcoin poster, because it was (and still is) quite easy to understand Bitcoin, progress and etc. I read a lot of materials on these forums, but my value on Bitcoin is overshadowed by many of the older veterans of BTT. It's difficult to explain, but yeah. Take it or leave it, i appreciate the attention this thread received in minutes.

Great process.

As you mentioned above for quantum computing, does this mean the end of the cryptocurrency?
But I think quantum computing can also be used for encryption, which can make the cryptocurrency really impossible to crack.

Short answer, no.

It's perceived (from what i've known and read) that we are about anywhere from 20-100 years away from a usable, everyday, quantum computer. The essence of it, no one knows when this will occur, or if it can even be achieved in our lifetimes. This subject is pretty in-depth overall, and I'll briefly go over what exactly a quantum computer is and how crypto will ultimately benefit and (fail) due to this enormous milestone for humanity.

To begin with, a bit represents a 1 or a 0, the most fundamental way to interpret the very fabric of reality into machine (or digital language). Essentially, a 1 means on, and a 0 means off. Computers behave by interpreting data in this fashion, reading bits, or a string of 8 bits (a byte), in order to process information. 0 essentially means no information, or a gap, a 1 means some sort of information is present. Thus, stringing these values, will ultimately denote a character, or any piece of information desired.

A Qbit is a quantum entangled pair of particles. Entanglement is inherent in quantum mechanics, a phenomenon whereby 2 particles, no matter the distance, will react instantaneously inversely to the particle entangled with (spin, polarization..etc). A Bit is binary it can only occupy one state, a 1 or a 0, with a Qbit, it can occupy both a 1 and a 0, called superposition. As you can imagine, this has drastic implications on the amount of information that can be processed.

The problem is, the current quantum computers are very unreliable, unstable and require a temperature near absolute 0 to even function (superconductor). Coinciding with that, you need enough Qbits to compute anything reasonable (100-150 is the latest), therefore the power of a quantum computer right now, is virtually useless. To create a near-absolute 0 environment requires an enormous amount of energy, to remove energy from the system, it's impractical for all intensive purposes. The colder the temp, the less resistance, and you need virtually no resistance (superconductor) to handle a Qubit operation. (i encourage you to read further, I'm not expert on material sciences)

Leading into cryptography -

The implications of the amount of information that can be processed due to the Qbit will directly affect all forms of encryption as we know it. Bitcoin utilizes SHA-256 encryption, and to crack a Bitcoin key: "it takes on the order of 2^128 basic operations to get the Bitcoin private key associated with a Bitcoin public key." - Wiki. I should note, there can be 2^256 different variations of private keys, and it would take roughly 0.5-0.6 billion years to compute all the variations with a modern supercomputer. That's very roughly 1/28 or 2% the age of the observable universe. Not practical or feasible to even think about or attempt. But, a quantum computer theoretically crack SHA-256, obtain private keys, rendering Bitcoin's blockchain useless. I should note, that transacting Bitcoin and announcing your public key happens in seconds, so what is perceived if you have 1 address, it's still somewhat impractical to cracking your public key, to obtain the private-key, even with a quantum computer.

Now, there are a lot of cryptos that have mitigation against quantum computing already created. IOTA, NEO and Qtum, there are various of others. Each one of these blockchains handles quantum resistance differently from what i understand, IOTA with DLT, Neo with ECC and Qtum with QRL. Not going to go into the specifics.

Essentially, with our current understanding it's very feasible to create quantum resistant blockchains, and all cryptos already have some sort of resistance already built into them. As we move forward in the decades, cryptos will fork off into newer algos or will already have mechanisms in place to defend against these types of attacks. Bitcoin has essentially done this, first mined with CPU, GPU and now ASICs. The various of forks were to prevent a 51% attack, first from the threat of GPUs and then ASICs, ASICs representing the epitome of power for computing hashes p/s, today. The second is brute-forcing (as expressed above) is obtaining private keys from the public key. As you stated, quantum computing can be used not only as an attacking mechanism, but also be used to encrypt information itself. Thus, somewhat nullifying this entire discussion.

The problem is that everything is mostly theory (not quantum mechanics) in terms of prevention against quantum computing.  I don't and very few actually know the mathematics behind all this stuff. And because of that, this answer is going to remain somewhat incomplete, unless someone else wants to weigh in on this topic that's more well-versed in computer science and quantum mechanics.

I will ultimately say, the biggest issue will reside with a quantum computing machine from an unknown party. Governments are no doubt working on these things, and the biggest issue for cryptos is not if, but when a quantum attack will occur. The prevention against these machines will quickly follow. But, it will have a significant impact on the entire market, you will see (no matter what occurs) an enormous sell-off, because of the fear, uncertainty (negative sentiment) and threat they pose. I believe, once a quantum computer is stable enough to operate, the first target is cryptography and all forms of encryption held over the internet. I really do not believe public companies like Intel and etc. will be the first to build a practical, stable quantum computer; simply because there is too much at stake for a government not to be investing in this technology for cybersecurity purposes. You can see glimpses of what computing power is doing to nations, just look at how the U.S. is reacting and telling it's allies not to use China/Huawei's 5g network capabilities/infrastructure. What would a quantum computer mean for governments across the world? Power, whatever it means to have a nuclear capabilities, by multiply that by some large arbitrary large number for how much significance a quantum computer has. The world is not disconnecting from the net anytime soon, in fact we are in the beginning. The IOT is real, somewhere in the future (if humanity hasn't annihilated itself), i image our consciousness will be uploaded to achieve near*-immortality.

If this topic interests you or anyone, i highly recommended just researching these field. There is so much information out there, and what was presented in the post above is really basic. Begin with the basics of Quantum Mechanics, then research further into the specifics of quantum-entanglement and superposition; Lastly, cryptography and encryption in general.

No Problem
