According to the course i took on antiquity at the university of Lund, the Spartan society was very much a patriarchal society, the women were a lot freer then in other Greek city states, but they certainly did not run the place.

The idea that it was a Matriarchal society is just the most wrong thing I have heard, and knowing greek doesn't change this in any sense.

Women serve social functions. Obviously. In all cultures. That does not make it a matriarchy.
