622  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brexit - Why do they call a second referendum a "people's vote" on: October 12, 2018, 08:40:36 AM
The core of the question is though, if now the majority votes for not leaving how can you deny their choice?

Wouldnt that be non democratic?

The majority can still vote no and cement the results of the first vote Smiley
623  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brexit - Why do they call a second referendum a "people's vote" on: October 11, 2018, 11:21:20 AM
There are some interesting comments in ths thread.
re: The fishing industry - if we stop allowing European fisherman to catch our fish, and then sell them back to us, catching them ourselves will boost UK employment, and save us the cost of paying foreign fisherman to catch our fish, and the unemployment benefits paid to our own fishermen.

It is very easy to make a case for a single industry or treaty, ignoring the rest. As I said, nothing is free. You will boost fishing related industries, but loose in some other aspect. EU negotiations are exactly that, you give and you take. In the case of the UK, it has been able to take a lot and frankly Germany is so happy to see the UK leaving and stop being a problem for their politics.

...real British vote woud have been a far larger percentage...

Only the brits could vote in the referedum. What do you mean by "real British Vote"? I hope you are not trying to establish a British "race" argument here.

... A deep state inspired referendum would allow them to extended the wasted two year transition period that is coming to an end...

An UK referendum would not allow any extension period. That is false information. Any extension would have to be agree by the 27 members of the European Union.

Again, the first referendum was "the true voice of the people", but the second would be "the Etonians manipulated vote". That does not fly.

Everyone who votes no is no real scottsman!

It was hilarious watching Bitmex casino bounce off $5800 while Stamp was at $6055.  There is some serious support down there.

Low on bitmex was 6005.

And i hate bitmex - because they earn 500 mil and still are offline at every big move lol...

When shit worked again we were already like at 6170 or so -_-
625  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh OT Thread on: October 10, 2018, 02:30:59 PM
....
Hypocrisy check:
Would the people posting here be making the same argument if Kavanaugh was a liberal appointment by the Democrats ?....

Nobody would suggest that.

The two parties have largely differing modus operandi.

Although the Republicans might "smear someone" by noting they were a past member of the Communist party.

The reason they would not try to smear based on sexual abuse allegations is because all that only works in one direction. If you're a democrat you don't even get media attention, it gets buried.

Clinton *cough cough*

627  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Electric Cars - The future ? on: October 09, 2018, 05:13:38 AM
Alot of the major car manufacturers are turning their sights on electric and hybrid cars and it seems it's only a matter of time before petrol and diesel cars are gone the way of the dodo. Tesla unveiled an impressive truck for transporting goods. Alot of governments and car manufacturers seem to be getting on board with going green for all the obvious reasons but how soon do you predict before electric is the norm in transportation ?

Do you own an electric car or are considering buying one  ? What are your reasons for buying it ?

electric cars free us from the conflicts in the middle east. and it also removes bargaining ability of many middle eastern countries.

(this is my post nr. 4000)

Congrats on the post, but a correction.

Texas Fracking industry has already freed us from the Middle East conflicts and removed the bargaining ability of those countries.

Interesting question though whether electric cars could have a similar effect. I'm inclined to say no, even though about 40% of a barrel of crude does become gasoline.

The reason to hesitate on this is that some time ago, everyone was promised that solar and wind would free us from (blah-blah-blah). None of that came to be true, and nuclear power, which actually could free us, has been systematically thwarted for decades.

Imho the main problem is high tariffs (especially against chinese) on solar imports by the US and EU.

If i remember correct without tariffs solar prices would fall 30-50+%.

The overpopulation trend, for the most part has already been reversed. So much so now a lot of nations are not even meeting replacement levels of reproduction.

Depending where you look at.

All 3rd world nations still have a birthrate of 6.0-10.0+ Sad

This year I'll be carrying a portion my winter budget to Vietnam in Bitcoin.  Already found a money changer (gold shop) to exchange with.  I'll still need to go through Fincen at the airport because of the cash so I'll ask them directly how they treat crypto.  Not intending on declaring any however.

I've been to Vietnam "carrying" over $1 million in bitcoin. No questions asked. They have a bitcoin ATM at a pizza place. You just grab a pizza while you wait for your transaction to go through and get your dong.

Lol

Feeling like living in the middleage here in europe  Shocked

....
The Senate has requested a supplemental FBI investigation to help them in their decision making and that is underway.

I think people may not understand the limits of "an FBI investigation" in this case. The FBI cannot issue subpoenas, the Senate committee can. The FBI cannot compel people to testify. Without subpoena power, the FBI cannot get phone records, email records or bank records.

The four people named by Ford have already produced sworn statements that they were not there, that the party did not happen, blah-blah-blah. They cannot change those statements without being under penalty of perjury.

The bet that should be made at this junction is whether one of the major Democratic operatives, such as Creepy Porn Lawyer, comes up with yet another delaying tactic at the last hour of the last day of the FBI investigation. You know they will.

A lot of people blindly worship the three letter agencies  FBI, CIA, NSA. When the FBI investigation finds no evidence supporting the accusations as is highly likely it will help wake some of the half asleep people.

It was not particularly logical to outsource this investigation to the FBI as you note. It is really is the Senate's job and they have the power to compel testimony under oath.

However the far left is not a particularly logical entirely and as a whole more motivated by identity politics and feelings. Traditional liberals who historically valued individual freedoms are marginalised and hold no power in today's left. Indeed liberalism today increasingly has more in common with conservatism than it does with leftism.

No matter what happens now Kavanaugh is going be be thought of as a dangerous rapist by a third of the country. USA today ran an article saying he was too dangerous to be allowed to coach his daughters basketball team. Nevertheless going through this week long FBI investigation will allow him to clear his name as much as is possible without allowing this tactic of last second uncorroborated allegation derail his nomination.

It's smart politics and probably the best possible response to this circus.

I won't take you up on that bet, however, as another attempt at delay after the FBI investigation is done seems almost a given at this point. However, that will be the time to vote which is what I expect the Senate will do.

What can the US senate do?

Can they only put people under oath and ask them stuff, or do they do investigations like law enforcement?

Would appreciate if anyone can explain it.
636  Other / Politics & Society / Re: IS DEMOCRACY THE BEST OPTION FOR GOVERNANCE? on: September 30, 2018, 04:17:26 AM
I'd say you're cotnradicting yourself a bit theymos... Monarchy is a system that gives way too much power into hands of one person, which is a danger in itself. As we know, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Then you say limiting the government is good, but a monarch would be able to rebuild the control with much more ease than democratically chosen government.

A democracy and a monarchy are equally capable of increasing the size of the state or refraining from doing so. If the members of the US congress all agreed to do so, they could turn the US into a communistic system where everyone was employed by the state. A monarch could, on the other hand, keep his government very limited. Just because a government is democratic doesn't limit its ability to grow, and in fact democratic institutions have a natural propensity to expand over time.

You are hoping for a benevolent dictator - sounds nice until he executes you and your family.

Democracy is bad, but it is the best form of governance we have at the moment.

Absolute power to a single entity will be always wrong - checks & balances is needed until humans themself change (which probaly wont happen).
