No i did not and Yes that is the reason i cannot go further. Thanks i can get a bit more outta my machine.
583  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Help please...I'm a newb when it comes to mining on: August 01, 2011, 03:54:36 PM
Would it be worth it to mine with a cheap laptop?
Generally Laptop mining is not worth the stress (heat) that the video card. Even some of the best laptop gpus ($1500+) only get 20 - 40 mhash compared to a $300 cheapo computer with a 5770 with 200 mhash.

How exactly does it all work?
in short:
Install the latest ATI driver package 11.7 or above
install the SDK 2.1 or 2.4 with opgenCL
download a bitcoin miner (for windows guimminer is easiest)
decide whether you want to solo mine or pool mine. (Pooled mining is prob the best solution here)
create an account with a pool miner operator. (BTC guild, slush's pool, deepbit...)
start mining
How much electricity would it take up?
depends on the power supply and video card solution
And is it worth it?
It depends. if your goal is to make money then you need a desktop platform.

Yes, the convector is part of the building HVAC system. Its a duel pipe system (one pipe in one pipe out) meaning that its either cold (summer ac) or hot (winter heat). It has cold water running through a radiator with a blower fan under that forcing the cold air up into the room. I directed this cold air to back side of the mobo and 5830s with those 2 120mm fans and added to 80mms fans on the front side near the dvi ports to exhaust the hot air. It worked well keeping 4 cramped 5830s at a cool 60c - 63c but... Yes, condensation was a concern. Another reason i wanted to get away from the AC solution. I really just need somebody else that has confirmed the 85c is ok to run at.

How is Microsoft actually using the graphics capabilities of your machine to make the O/S look better and be more functional, "Screwing things up!"?

If you don't have a use for it, shut it off.

Seems reasonable to me. +1
586  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 4 5830 Sapphire Extreme GPU temps questions on: August 01, 2011, 01:50:58 PM
Well i have them in a XIGMATEK Elysium case. i wanted them there to keep the noise level a bit lower.

I used to have AC blowing straight from a convector which kept them a cool 60c to 63c but the noise was just too much for the room. I dropped them into a XIGMATEK Elysium which has the massive 200mm fan on the side blowing right on them but that also pushed the temps a bit high. (past 90)
So I added the following:

2 120mm directly behind the cards blowing out across the cards
4 80mm resting on top of the 5830s

Now they are around 85 with the GPU fans at 100. I hope i can drop them to 70 with out the temp going to high.
Thanks,
587  Bitcoin / Mining support / 4 5830 Sapphire Extreme GPU temps questions on: August 01, 2011, 01:22:15 PM
What are good temps for 4 Sapphire 5830s in a MSI 890FXA GD70 (yes they are cramped together)?

I was getting up to 85c with the middle cards. Is that normal/good/bad to continue running 24/7?

All 4 are OC 1000/300.

I know that most people think that below 80 is a good idea but it seems that there temp threshold is around 100c so i should be ok.

any thoughts would be great.

I too have noticed the same with XFX 6959s. i have a 1000w psu and 1 xfx 6950. When i push them higher than 900mhz the mhash drops. I am also happy with the mhash so i dont worry too much about it.

I guess i am running an older version for slush. ol well it is cool.

SapphireTrxx http://www.sapphireselectclub.com/ssc/TriXX/TriXX.aspx is a great tool with the current version. i only use MSI afterburner for GPU temps. You dont need Sapphire cards either. any ati card will work.

596  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A very good guide on how to build a Bitcoin Mining Rig Cluster on: July 30, 2011, 04:15:21 PM
No mention of dummy plugs. All in all its a great slide show.

I think with the 11.7 ATI drivers you dont need them anymore.
Have you confirmed this? I have not found any posts about 11.7 with no dummy plugs.

599  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: new mining rig - asrock 970 extreme4 can go triple crossfire? 5850 on: July 29, 2011, 07:46:32 PM
i would go with a more powerful power supply like 1000+ and this mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130274

That way you can add up to 5 pcie16 slots with risers for future video cards

also open air instead of a case for mining alone seems to produce the best temps.

Show and explain the bitcoin hashing algorithm to them. they will be impressed with your understanding of advanced mathematics. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Block_hashing_algorithm

OR they will be scared about what they dont know and tell you to turn it off now.
