601  Economy / Speculation / Re: Anyone have any idea of the total number of bitcoin users? on: July 29, 2011, 07:34:01 PM
well there were 61020 accounts that were hacked. A bunch are dupes but still i would say in the 40000 range. I was wondering if there are any hard data.
602  Economy / Speculation / Anyone have any idea of the total number of bitcoin users? on: July 29, 2011, 06:56:23 PM
Not just miners and economists but people that have heard about bitcoin and started using them?
603  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: When Does Solo Mining Make Sense? on: July 27, 2011, 04:36:42 PM
I would say its more of an emotional thing. You could go weeks without generating a single block and that is hard to swallow when you may have dumped 5000k into hardware. Pooled mining seems to be the safer bet and it just feels good to get a steady income rather then the spike of adrenalin when you generate that first block. I have looked for the same answer but it ends up being a personal choice.

I have reviewed my home owners association bylaws and there is no standard usage, lucky me. Also it may depend on the total amount of apts in the building. Lets say 50+. A bump in power from one might not even dent the power bill for anyone to notice, at least in my case it doesn't. Smiley

No i didn't think that was the case.
I was implying that the media over reacts like with the whole silkroad thing. If bitcoins are used to buy illegal items then bitcoins must be bad type of attitude. i think its awesome that BTC are being exchanged for services. i can wait to tip the pizza guy with BTCs

What about something like http://www.ustoreit.com/storage/climate-controlled-storage/ temperature controlled storage. Just ask if there is power in the room and how much. Who knows they might even have another option being in the physical space biz.

I don't think the 6xxx drives will even work with Windows 2000. Why not try Ubuntu if you don't have XP,Vista,7?

It's things like this that makes me smile about this bitcoin community.  Smiley

Pretty soon the word in the news will be "Bitcoins! Help college students cheat there way through college"   Smiley

Friends/Neighbors with basements? tell them that you will pay whatever it costs in electricity plus a few bucks more. I have my power wrapped into my condo fees with 30+ units so no one knows that i'm running my friends miner. i get 50 bucks a month from him for "Rent" and "Power costs" (it would cost him 100 if he mined at home).

612  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Mining Rig hidden in drop ceiling of office on: July 21, 2011, 02:04:41 PM
When I mentioned fire hazard i meant more like running indoor power cables to a location inside the plenum of the building as well as the other computer hardware. If that stuff burns it could cause additional safety concerns (burned plastics, rubber...) and so on. It may release chemicals into the air ducts which would could cause health hazards to others in the building.

However very unlikely that this would happen and maybe its just my paranoia.

615  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 4x5830 Rig - always 1 gpu idling after starting mining on: July 20, 2011, 06:57:42 PM
I am using 1000W power supply.  Is that enough to run 4x 5830s?

I am using a 1000watt psu for 4x 5830s fine but i have a another for the cooling system 8 fans.

It should be fine to say 300watts for the mobo and 200watts for each card but that is over kill with overvolting and overclocking
300watts(mobo) +200watts x4(5830s)=1100watts

to be 100 percent safe i would lean towards the 1200watt psu to power everything.

617  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Ghash/s ? on: July 20, 2011, 06:38:32 PM
For noobs pooled mining is the best way to go unless you dive in at more then 3+ ghash. even so i am at 2.5 ghash and still pool mining for the constant btc flow rather then the chance of finding a the block jackpot of 50btcs once every 4 - 6 weeks most likely.

Mhash/Ghash is the most important hardware measurement to focus on, but with that comes a power supply that can handle the GPUs you choose. Also you will need a mobo that supports a bunch of pcie slots and as of late getting at least a atholon II x4 is becoming the norm. this is all not to mention the wattage used by the system as a whole.
618  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 313.5 or: Why I Love My 5830 on: July 18, 2011, 07:21:18 PM

SAPPHIRE 100297-2L x4

COOLMAX RM-1000B 1000W ATX (motherboard and 3 5830s)
ANTEC Neo power 430W (For 8 80mm fans 2.5 HDD and one 5830)
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)

any thoughts would be nice.
619  Bitcoin / Mining / BTC Guild vs Slush vs Deepbit thoughts? on: July 18, 2011, 06:56:42 PM
Most miners have their reasons for going with one or another (fees, score, ddos security, pool hopping...) anyone with any expedience with all three with any thoughts why they landed on their own?
