1041  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GUIDE - Make your own open frame rig. on: August 02, 2011, 04:45:16 PM
My mother board comes with a switch to power on & reset in mother board itself. MSI Big Bang Marshal.
Also, in bios setup, power management i applied to power on the machine after power restore. So if power cuts & comes back, system automatically starts.
If that doesn't happen then i use screw driver to short the power + & - pins to start the system.
If you don't know about hardware, you can buy a switch & connect it to power + & - & use that to switch on the system.
Better safe than sorry. Avoid screw type method i did, if you don't know about hardware.

So my box comes online, and I can automate everything via command line or guiminer autorun, except getting the clock speed down to 300. I have to use Afterburner for that.

Does anyone have a solution using ClockTweak to modify 69xx cards down to 300?
I successfully using clocktweak for the past 10 days.
My frequencies are 975/325 & 939/313.
Windows 7, 64 bit, AERO enabled.
11.8 beta catalyst.
Completely automated mining.
Card 5870. I also had 6970 & used for 6-7 hours before my mother board gave problem(due to some other factor, not related to clocktweak)

2.1version. With VECTORS4 & worksize 128 or 64, i only get 365 instead of 441. I under clock memory.
But with just vectors i get 448 & 432.
Using 2version i got 441 & 427

cards MSI Lightning 5870 & Sapphire HD 5870
MSI  448 Mhash/s - 975/325, 1175mV - aggression 13
Sapphire 432 Mhash/s - 939/313, 1163mV - aggression 12

Windows 7, 64 bit, AERO enabled, AOCLBF 1.75

I usually go for the closed type because it makes ducting the air easier. But they don't actually draw air from the ass. Air is drawn in through the fan, it's a centrifugal fan. The opening on the ass exhaust as well.

Quote
Here CLOSED type works better.
In closed type air is sucked from mouth of the card & it passes to the GPU & comes out of the ass(back) of the card.
Their is NO GAP for the air to escape in any side.
This makes the air coming out of card is VERY hot. But it cools the GPU.
Since it SUCKS air, even in multi card setup, it doesn't increase the heat of near by card, since the air never escapes on sides.
Air goes OUT only on cards ass.

Thanks for the wooden case. It gave me idea to use just a wooden reaper on top of slotted angle in the cards back side, so that instead of using some wires or threads to secure cards, i can just buy a wooden reaper of 24 inch x 1 inch x 1 inch & bolt it on top of slotted angle & can screw the cards where ever i want easily.

I am using google chrome from its first release version 1 & never had problem. Besides there are free software available that completely block all the data google steals from your system. One example is "Abine"
Or still you fear you can go for SRWare iron or chrome(chrome is original & google chrome came from it) itself or even more trusted & secured one, Comodo Dragon.
All are different variants of Chrome only, like Ubuntu, Debian....in Linux.

Can use google chrome & IE tab.

Note/Advice/Tips/Guide to those who going to buy graphic cards.

I was fooled by some other fool/fools who designed graphic cards.
2 types of card design i see & i call it OPEN type & CLOSED type. I don't know what manufactures use to call.

Example for OPEN type card is R6970 Lightning card.
http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R6970-Lightning.html

Example for CLOSED type card is MSI R6970-2PM2D2GD5 card.
http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R6970-2PM2D2GD5.html

I bought 4 nos. of OPEN type, R6970 Lightning, since it is factory over clocked to 940Mhz & also has TWO FANS.
I thought since it has TWO FANS & ITS MILITARY DESIGN, it will run much cooler than the other type.
But i was WRONG.

Actually this is foolish design to use in a multi GPU card setup. This type of cards MUST NOT be used if more than 2 cards in a pc.

In my mining setup, 6 cards are connected from slot1 to slot6 using riser cables, with more than 1 inch gap between each cards.
The LAST card in slot 6 , grabs air from open, while the card before that grabs air from back of last card & it goes on.....with FIRST card getting air from back of second card.
Here comes the problem.
The last card runs cooler(65C) & the FIRST card runs HOTTER than all (>95C)

What happens here is the last card grabs air from outside & the card design allows air to come out of the card in ALL directions.
If you look at the card, you can see there is gap in ALL 4 sides of the card for the air to escape.
The fan grabs air, pushes to the heat sink & the hot air escapes from all sides.
The card before the last card, grabs the HOT air from last card, & gets temperature increased & air escapes through all sides.
As this goes on, the FIRST card gets hottest air & so the temperature of the card is very high.
Placing 6 120mm fans on top of cards don't reduce much temperature. Only up to 85C.

Here CLOSED type works better.
In closed type air is sucked from mouth(centrifugal fan in one side of card) of the card & it passes to the GPU & comes out of the ass(back, where varies connectors are placed) of the card.

But this type also has another problem.
Since it sucks air from mouth & release hot air through ass & NO GAP for air to escape in any side, DUST if accumulated on the ass will NOT allow the hot air to go out easily.
So, it needs to be looked in to every now & then to keep the ass clean.
If not the hot air will fry the GPU & you get BAD smell.

My mining rig cabinet is made with slotted angles, just a skeleton of iron angles, same like cablesaurus A1 model cabinet.
A1 model cabinet is made with aluminium frame, mine is with slotted angles.

Any one object this or has some other experiences can share.
I want to know the pros & cons of the different design, so if i buy cards in future it must be a correct one.

I am not using pc case. If u go back some pages & posts u can see my open case made with slotted angles.
1054  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: AOCLBF (was Phoenix Rising): Phoenix/POCLBM GUI With Built-In Overclock Tool on: August 01, 2011, 06:09:42 AM
To those who want to control fan speed, since the developer of AOCLBF not available, you can use Clocktweak.
https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=9982.0
It is not free, but the 20 cents you give is 100% worth.
I bought this software 2 months back & when i tried that time it didn't work, so abandoned.
But a week before again tried with the old file i downloaded & the developer gives FREE upgrades.
The tool perfectly over clocks & under clocks & also control fan speed. Besides it has power tune option, so you don't even need to install CCC(which is crap).
Check out the link above & control fan.
1055  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5 GPUs...can I do it? on: July 31, 2011, 07:15:31 PM
Make sure your logic board can support PCIe cards in ALL slots. Some share bandwidth in such a way as to effectively disable certain x1 slots when the x16 slots are filled.

I've learned this the very hard way by spending quite a lot of money on what I thought was a good board with 5 slots - 5 extender cables and GPUs, only three of the GPUs are being recognised. I'd check first - certainly before butchering your case (if it's a nice case)...

And remember that GPU cards always seem to run cooler *outside* of a case than inside. Even without box fans etc. my open-frame rig is cooler than the case boxes.

Thanks for the help everyone.

The mobo is an MSI 870U-G55. Any clue how I can research whether it supports 5 PCI slots or not?
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/870U-G55.html#?div=Detail

says,
Slots
• 1 PCI Express x16 slot (PCI_E2) with x16 operation (PCI Express Bus SPEC V2.0 compliant)
• 1 PCI Express x16 slot (PCI_E3) with x4 operation (PCI Express Bus SPEC V2.0 compliant)
• 1 PCI Express x1 slot

meaning only THREE PCIe slots. NOT 5.

.. Still getting blocks, at 128000.. and still going. Don't worry I'll stay true to my word, once I get all my coins.

Download latest file tar.bz2 from this link http://palsecam.bitcoin.bluematt.me/bitcoin-nightly/blockchain-nightly/
Latest now is bitcoin-blockchain-20110730.tar.bz2 & also download & read the README.txt file.
Use 7zip or winrar to extract the contents of ****.tar.bz2 file.
It will have 2 files, blkindex.dat & blk0001.dat.
Take backup of your C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin folder & ONLY then copy & replace the two files from ***.tar.bz2 in to bitcoin folder.
Then as said in README.TXT, run bitcoin.exe -rescan.
It will update database instantly to yesterdays block chain & you then have to download only today's block chain which will take less than 30 minutes.
